  2. "Sigh".....not sure I have the strength to explain this for the ______ time? Relondo's response to Snowy... What Relondo is referring to and what Snowy was trying to ask are two complete different things. Snowy asked why a Retailer(store) is telling their customers that UNT licensing makes it difficult to get gear? But Licensing has nothing to do with a retailer selling products to customers because the Licensing fee is already paid for by the "MANUFACTURER". The manufacturer then sells the product to the retailer(store). When Rolondo replied that they have "Major Manufacturers that produce our product".. he's correct. But there's one major problem with that. Those major manufacturers don't give a crap about producing North Texas gear due to a lack of volume...for several reasons. They would rather produce products for stores requesting items from a top 25 selling school instead. Oh, they will make their product for the retailer when the retailer orders it, but the retailer is gonna pay dearly for it, and that's the bottom line problem for the retailer, and then ultimately, you the customer. More than likely the retailer Snowy was dealing with and the guy Plumm was dealing with either don't know what they are talking about or would rather blame it on North Texas as to why they can't get gear rather than to admit they simply don't care or can't afford it. Those Major Manufacturers Relondo mentioned are "Collegiate Licensed Company"(CLC) licensed manufacturers. CLC handles, approves, promotes and enforces the brands of licensed items for schools they are contracted with, and unfortunately, we are one of those schools. Last time I dealt with them Paul Batchelder was CLC's contact for our athletic department. And Relondo must be their contact for URCM, but Im not for certain on that since its been a few years. Anyhow, dealing with CLC is an extreme pain in the ass. For instance, to get licensed to make CLC approved products, a manufacturer just starting out must first have an active $1 Million product liability insurance policy just to request an application. And then it's anywhere from 8 months to a year to wait for approval. CLC even goes so far as to discourage you from applying with a statement on their application forms describing in great detail as to why you should expect a denial. And they have their reasons for this which I'll explain later. And here is why a retailer(store) might get it confused and simply say....."Well, we can't get UNT gear because UNT won't release their branding due to......(fill in the blank with an excuse here)". And I encourage anyone else who is interested to do this as well..... Pick a collegiate product that is made with another top selling school's logo,..ex: North Carolina, and find the contact for the manufacturer of that product and call that company. When someone answers ask for sales, and be nice but firm, and tell them your the owner of a business/retailer/store. If they ask the name of the business just make one up since your just looking for a product quote at the moment. Tell them you would like to purchase their product with a North Texas Mean Green logo on it. They will either tell you no, or tell you ok, and then will give you your cost per item and then the minimum number of items you must purchase from them to complete the purchase. And this is when you will understand the whole problem. As before, I'll give you one of my many examples I ran into when trying to supply Mean Green fans with cool, new and unique products. One item was a Mean Green chrome "AutoEmblem", manufactured out of Colorado Springs, CO. I call and get ahold of the main dude over product sales. I introduced myself and told him that I had a small online North Texas gear store down in Texas. We had a nice quick chat about their product blah blah blah, then I told him what I wanted. He hesitated for a moment(this was because he wasn't sure if they had a license agreement from CLC to produce North Texas AutoEmblems or not, and was having to look it up to make sure), then tells me...."OK, we can do that". He then say's that their product has a nationally set price, that I must sign an agreement to sell it at that price, which at the time was $8.50 each, and that my cost was $5.00 each,.. and that my minimum order was.....and here's the kick to the nads.............3500 units!!!!!!!!!! I nearly flipped out. I asked why it was going to cost me $17,500 for a product I wouldn't live long enough to sell all of? He said "Because first, since we have never done a product for North Texas I have to apply for and get approval from CLC". This was only something like $35 dollars, but it involves paperwork and approval time, which was anywhere from 3 days to a couple of weeks back then. He then said.."Next, since we have never produced a product for North Texas I have to pay a (injection)mold designer to make the 4-piece mold that will more than likely never get used again, and those things are expensive". At this point I realized I wasn't going to get my AutoEmblem to sell to y'all. He realized I was dissatisfied and then explained that nowadays they stick mostly to two areas of products to maximize their profits. NASCAR and the top 25 merchandising colleges...Texas, North Carolina, Michigan...ex. And THAT is the biggest deal and what people like Relondo don't seem to understand? Sure, we are in a licensing agreement with approved major manufacturers around the country...(thru CLC).. but they don't do enough product with UNT to bother over. Soap Box... It's my opinion that CLC is a crooked group of people who don't give a shit about the smaller schools or the smaller manufacturer, and we saw a great example of this in pitiful shirts they approved of to be made and sold by one of their bigger manufacturers from Kansas back in '03 or '04 in New Orleans. After giving me final approval to produce a Sun Belt Conference Champion shirt CLC put the squeeze to my nuts and changed their minds on my approval by fabricated a reason why I had to triple my fee, assuring that I wouldn't be able to sell my shirt that AustinTalon had designed for us here on Gmg.com. Instead they later approved one of their bigger distributors out of Kansas for that game. That Kansas shirt was about as bland as it could be and it became obvious as to why when I asked the rep there at their table in the team hotel about North Texas and he couldnt even tell me what town UNT was in, and later admitted he had no idea who we were. As it turned out, they were also connected with the N.O. Bowl folks who relies heavily on CLC for products. Remember the great shirt the Exes had made up that year? The Exes had a local do that shjrt and gave it away rather than sell it, and they went fast. Both the Exes shirt and our shirt blew the Kansas-made shirt out of the water, but CLC wasn't concerned about Quality, they just had to fill a small void for the bowl committee and keep their preferred manufacturers in business. This Is when I realized, as I mentioned earlier, why in their application they tell you about expecting a denial. They don't want mom and pop t shirt businesses interfering with their back-scratching they have going on with the bigger manufacturers. As a result smaller market schools like UNT and their fans suffer the consequences. Overall this is why I still maintain NT should go private licensing and control it's own products by using local manufacturers who are more than likely familiar with or even connected to UNT, who would be much more highly motivated to do a better job producing a more quality product than what some carpet bagger out of Topeka would put out. Off soap box. Rick

  3. Well I am biased but this is Bo's dad. He came from a 4A school in south Texas. When you are 6'5" and 320lbs playing in 4A it is not hard to be the biggest man on the field. He was running a 5.1-5.2 - 40 in March at 315 lbs. Bo has a very large frame, long arms and big hands that the coaches loved and can put their kind of muscle on. And he is just 17 years old right now. He had several offers from smaller schools but after a visit in late November by happenstance (A family friend knows Coach Canales and we were up here for Thanksgiving and just popped in to watch the team practice for the Bowl game), he loved UNT and decided this is where he wanted to go. His mom's family (a lot of them) live within 30 miles of Denton so there will be many Mean Green season ticket holders coming from the area and many from down south. Not often a kid passes scholarship offers to become a preferred walk on but we all just felt this was where he needed to be. Bo is so pumped we can't keep him out of the gym. He is doing cardio so he can be in the best shape he can be in July. For a big lineman to "want" to do cardio, he must be pumped! Go Mean Green!!!!!

  5. First off: Stop calling people names. It is childish and counterproductive. Can you not understand that the people on this board are the diehards? This isn't the 1%, It's the .1% Of course people on here are going to drive long distances to go to UNT games, that's what we do. But guess what, 99% of the alumni aren't diehard fans. And if you ever want to sell out Apogee, hell, have to expand it, you have to get the non diehards to come on board. So you traveled to a bunch of football games? Congrats. How many swim team events did you make? How about the best program we have, soccer, did you make the trip to Norman last year to watch NT Soccer cream OU? How about the Texas Legends? They are short drive away, how many minor league basketball games did you make last year? What, none? Because you aren't a fan of them? MOST OF OUR ALUMNI DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR TEAMS! Acting like a bunch of self righteous jerks isn't going to attract them. We need to make these events attractive. Mac and the team are doing their part. Do yours. Don't call alumni who don't make the trip pathetic and call them pussies. Buy them a ticket, offer to host them, go out of your way to make sure they have a great time at the game. They will come back once they see what they are missing. Or, look down your nose at them, just don't drive people away by calling them names, it's the least you can do. PS: Oh, and I am pretty sure you can't brag about being a Mean Green road warrior unless you made a trip to the Kibbie Dome.

  10. You guys, Rice is a good team and could crack the top 25 this season. Plus we beat A&M and played OU close. Both of those teams should finish in the top 2 this season. Just wait until we get rid of JJ's recruits and Benford gets all his guys in here, then we should be competing with the Heat, Thunder and Pacers for best in the NBA.

  13. No, I was up in the rafters, but I did capture a somewhat amusing moment involving them. This group of girls wanted their picture taken with Romo, so one of them handed her phone to Jason Garrett and apparently asked him to take their picture. I was like, you seriously asked the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys to take a group photo OF--not WITH--you. Sorry for the poor photo quality (but I was about 3/4 of a mile away).

  14. Did I mention the LaTech fans have been on the block much longer and know how to understand the ebbs & flows of NCAA football? I don't think they would consider a regular season game against UNT as their Super Bowl and troll GMG.com for any mention of their school.

  15. Isn't this his first off season in college? Is it possible that the first few workouts were him figuring out how things work at this level in the off season and not him slacking off and being a bad team member? Is it possible that we are reading too much into this?

  25. From a coach referenced in that Startlegram article about recruiting... “[The player] was undersized and not on anyone’s ‘Top 100’ list. Very few offers from mid-majors. One day OU shows up, offers, and by the end of spring ball, [the player] was on everyone’s list, had offers coast-to-coast. He was no better player than earlier in the spring, but the OU offer catapulted him into the recruiting stratosphere.” Seems coaches are no more immune to the hype than Rivals or Scout.

  27. If it's true that we're ditching the "North Texas" from the helmets in favor of SOW, then I am now 173% in favor of naming the [Jerry Jones voice]stadjyum[/Jerry Jones voice] after Rick! If I were young enough (because my wife is always young enough...right?) to have another kid, I'd name it Rick, boy or girl. In fact, all new Mean Green babies should be named Rick, if male, or Rickie/Rikki, if female...or, you aren't Mean Green.

  28. I can agree that it may be best to just move on and no longer dwell on a loss but to say the game didn't mean anything is pretty revisionist. 1. It kept us out of the conference championship game 2. It prevented us from an undefeated home record 3. It was senior day for a class of seniors who we all wish had enjoyed a victory I, for one, am confused by those who were so un-supportive of your effort. Thank you for being willing to put forth the work required to bring a board idea together.

  29. Very early, I know, but now that the 2014 signing day is now behind us, 2015 recruiting is here with an upcoming junior day on Saturday. If Chumley, Graham, and Jackson all do go through with the grayshirts and we don't sign anyone late then that will put us at 77 projected scholarship players for next season. With 17 seniors, plus the 8 open scholarship spots, we should be able to sign the class max of 25 players. Not to mention kids inevitably will transfer or quit, although some scholarships may be filled by walkons. Regardless, we should be able to sign 25. Here's a position-by-position breakdown of how many scholarship seniors we are projected to have and how many scholarship non seniors will be on the roster next year. Then how many we may sign in the 2015 class. QB - Seniors: 0 - non Seniors: 4 Projected 2015 signees: 1 With 4 non Senior qbs on the roster, we may be able to get away with signing 0. Chumley could be our qb signee since he was told he will get a shot there, although there is a notable chance that he may get moved to tight end or elsewhere at some point. For now I'm counting Chumley as our 2015 qb signee. If I remember correctly, Mac said he doesn't like more than 4 scholly qbs. If one of our guys transfers and qb is not in the cards for Chumley, then we may sign another qb. If not, there's a chance we don't and just stick with Chumley and look towards making qb a priority in 2016. RB - Seniors: 1 - non Seniors: 5 - Projected 2015 signees: 1 Another position where we could get away with not signing any. The skill players we signed in the 2014 class will allow us to be very picky with skill players in 2015. I would still be surprised if we didn't sign 1 back. Could just be a "best available player" type recruitment where there is a good back that we'd have a chance at getting, or an "athlete." Telling a kid you're only taking him at running back for the class is a nice sales pitch. WR - Seniors: 2 - non Seniors: 8 Projected 2015 signees: 2 Once again, we should be able to be very picky with our receiver recruiting in 2015 after taking 4 in 2014, and some pretty good ones at that. Again, maybe a best player available type signing at receiver. Or we could put all our eggs in a few baskets and hope we get those kids, knowing that we'll be okay even if we don't get them. Tight End - Seniors:1 - non Seniors:4 Projected 2015 signees:1 I think we sign a tight end this class and Caleb Chumley could end up there as well. We will only lose one senior tight end, but he is used more like a fullback in our offense and lines up more in the backfield than on the LOS (Tanner Smith). While we have 4 non senior tight ends, 3 will be juniors next year so bringing in a guy will be important. Then we won't have to replace all 3 at once with new guys. Might see us target a guy like Wylie Reinhardt/Andrew Power, since Mac likes to have those "6th lineman" type tight ends to be a road grader in the run game. OL - Seniors: 5 - non Seniors: 9 Projected signees: 5 Here's where the focus will likely be on offensive player recruiting. Losing 5 scholarship guys including 3 four-year starters. Here's our best bet at JUCO guys as well. Could be something like 2 JUCO guys and 3 high school guys. Could even be 3 JUCO/3 high school or 2 JUCO/4 high school guys. Getting 1 tackle and 1 interior lineman from a JUCO is very possible. At least to provide depth. These new guys plus our OL coach here who is developing the young guys already on the roster quite well should make the replacement of those o-linemen as smooth as you could ask. Projected offensive signees: 10 Current 2015 offensive offers to my knowledge:

  31. So you're saying his flint spear and selection of say a 5-man team to ambush the mammoth would not work against an Owl, Bulldog, Golden Eagle? I think it would do better than Mr Benford's methods of aimlessly passing the spear for 20 seconds before stabbing & then substituting the animal to death. Of course, neither would work as well as an AK-47, but apparently we cannot afford one of those.

  33. From Vito's blog......... "Heading into the game, Benford said he wanted to get more out of his post players other than Voss. He didn’t get much against Rice. Kelvin Gaines, Keith Coleman and Armani Flannigan combined for two points and four rebounds in 20 minutes. UNT was eaten alive inside by Rice freshman Sean Obi, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds." Really sad.

  44. For those of us who have been going to Denton from Dallas forever the trip is not a big deal, but for those not used to it the trip is a real pain - especially at night. We need to utilize the ATrain as we did for the HOD and work on getting more Denton county residents to the games. We need to work toward the kind of fan base in Denton that Tech has in Lubbock, Baylor has in Waco and TCU has in Ft. Worth. Not all of those fans are alumni of those respective schools, but they do support the local team. I'm not sure how to accomplish this, but it is something we need to work on.
