Whether or not DT plays pro football has no impact on how good he was at UNT. Does it make Brandon Kennedy any less of a college player because he never made it in the NFL?6 points

Assuming that the guys moving up (and in) on the depth chart to start this fall are healthy and properly prepared & motivated, this could/should be a 12-0 season. I'm not drinking kool-aid folks. Our team is no longer in awe of "big time" programs like Texas. We'll play them the same as we played Georgia last year. But this year our chances are much better.3 points

We lose recruits to schools such as SM,TCU, and in this case perhaps Northwestern because their degree is thought to be more valuable .If Xavier's goal is to play as soon as possible, then either UNT or UH would work.If its' about education, hard to turn down Northwestern.3 points

No. Derek graduated 1 1/2 years ago along with Ryan. They both graduate in MAY with their Masters Degrees. They are both completeing thier internships this semester.3 points

Some people put too much stock in a school's classification and/or a player's stats. The bottom line is you can judge talent or you can't. Film and (ideally) in-person should tell you everything. Obviously, a 2A player will likely have a bigger learning curve than a 5A player. But just because a guy dominates at the 2A level doesn't mean his FBS-worthiness is any less than if he was simply an above average 5A player. You put on Wilson's tape, he can play in CUSA.3 points

For newer GMG.com members since veteran GMG.com posters may have read this already but: For about 30 or so years most of the Southwest Conference did not want to play North Texas because (1) we had integrated with Abner Haynes and Leon King in the 50's so all of that SWC group drop kicked us off their future schedules because of our school doing the right thing; then (2) the Mean Joe Greene Era of the 60's gave them further reason not to schedule North Texas and then; (3) the Hayden Fry era of the 70's completed that 30 or so years period of time we were not on SWC school's schedule (except for SMU a few times & UT twice). NOTE: TCU (for the most part) only scheduled North Texas when they were in a win cycle and we were not---go figure. I can only imagine how UNT could have padded our "W's" numbers in our all time series with some of those Southwest Conference schools during that 30 plus years period of time. Shame on those who dropped us off their schedules, though, because we had integrated in the 1950's. Shame, shame, shame...3 points

Here's about a half dozen plays -- each shown from three different angles -- from Sulphur Springs' first-round playoff win vs. Denison. Two of the plays are him blocking. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1359189# The QB is a junior who just committed to Texas A&M to play safety.3 points

Vito, "UNT hasn’t been in many battles with schools like Northwestern for recruits over the years". Northwestern came on the scene just last week and swept one our top recruits right from under our noses. There was no recruiting battle.2 points

Good luck to him. On to more pressing issues like the fact that we're only going to sign 1 high school DE and 1 high school DT who's only other offers were TSU & Utah State. In the 2013 class we signed 1 high school DT and 1 JUCO DE. I know that we have made progress in recruiting this season with the East Texas pledges, but man that's a big disappointment. In 2012 we signed 6 high school defensive lineman, two have left school (Horton, McDorman) and the other 4 haven't seen the field. It is imperative that a couple of those guys come on strong in spring ball.2 points

Understand going for the education. No problem if that is what it is really all about with him. Plus, he may want to transfer back in a year or so. Keep that door open.2 points

So much for the #1 offense. Physical defense and sound special teams still win championships.2 points

Go back and watch Jones in his freshman year. He looked much quicker than he does now. He has very difficult time getting enough separation to even get off a floater.2 points

Thanks for posting the FB page. I didn't know that existed. Appears my fave player is out of the running for loudest motivator also. On DW.... couldn't agree more with the fact that he HAS to step up and lead in all aspects. AND BY EXAMPLE. That bit about the cold defeating him outside had me the most worried. QB has to be a leader and The WEAK minded are hard to follow. ESPECIALLY, when those that he is expected to lead are busting their arses in the same conditions without complaints.2 points

Our endowment is low because for decades University leadership discouraged donations because there were afraid of the influence those donations would bring. Thankfully that has been rectified, but it will take decades to build a healthy giving culture in NT grads.2 points

Maybe he is just messing with us on this, right? Right? RIGHT?!2 points

That's not entirely true nowadays though. Our business school is certainly emerging and will continue to do so along with our engineering programs. Discovery park will take a little time to mature, but its potential is breathtaking. And we already have a few programs highly respected that are associated with "money-making" majors, such as accounting and hospitality management. However, what we need is a change in perception and tier 1 status along with other things, such as althletics, will cause a major increase in alumni donations and overall funding. We are slowly making the right moves and we just need the administration to continue working hard and us to continue educating people about what UNT is really like.2 points

And environmental science, public administration, city management and urban policy, health informatics, counselling, art & graphic design and a number of other top-ranked programs. We really are an underrated academic institution in terms of perception mainly because of our low endowment and low research funds...but that will continue to change and get better as people start realizing the high quality level produced at UNT for an affordable school.2 points

The kid from Memphis who committed to Northwestern two weeks ago, James Prather, was the back-up plan. So, Fitz is still selling it. Also, adding the flip of a UTSA commit...is it concerning to Northwestern football fans that their Big Ten program is wrestling with North Texas, Houston, and UTSA for recruits just a few days before signing day?2 points

Slowness is not NT's problem, it is no inside game. NT has better than average speed. Jones is a different player than his freshman year and I don't think it is because he is slower. He IMO has been coached to become primarily a ball distributor and it is not his best game. Jones was a scorer and one of the teams top rebounders as well as being a good assist man. Now, he appears much more hesitant because he is trying to play Benford ball and he knows one turnover and it is likely the bench. A run and gun pg like Hamilton, Deon Hunter or Johnson does not fit what Benford wants to do.2 points

Now that the cat is out of the bag and it appears Chumleys offer is a grayshirt, I would expect other schools to offer full rides at the last minute. I hope this is not the case because he has a lot of potential upside. This may come down to signing day, but I personally feel he should get a full ride. UNT is probably waiting to see how it plays out and see if they have to match. I guess similar to what NW did with X.2 points

Back to the original topic... It's true that we would've been better off for football but Charlotte doesn't sit out on the other sports so all of the sports that Charlotte participates in could have 13 conference members. La Tech doesn't want to share any limelight with a state team that they consider their equal or less but they're really ballistic about ULM; not so much about UL-Lafayette. ULM is in the same TV market whereas the University of Louisiana is not. Louisiana Tech has played the Lafayette school recently but I'd expect a hard freeze in July before they'd play ULM. UL-Monroe has the smallest budget in the FBS by a good margin. UL-Lafayette has a budget similar to La Tech's and better attendance. They would be a good get if they can afford it. I'd like to dump the two Floridas as well but unless the conference sets standards that they can't meet it appears that they are here for the duration. They have money. They just need to hire the coaches to make them competitive and put people in the stands. Strangely, they are competitive in the minor sports. It's mostly football and basketball that's the problem. I like WKU in that they are competitive in every sport that they sponsor but they are in a small market and will struggle with attendance problems in football. They add a basketball "name" as they have a rich history. But, does that positively affect the TV contract significantly? As for the Sun Belt, I'd say any member that can consistently draw 25K has earned the right to move up. When expansion is necessary (or desired) I'd prefer one of them over a FCS moveup.2 points

Most of our games against SMU came when we played I-AA ball. Northwestern has been in the Big 10 forever, and having a losing all time record to every team in your conference but one is pretty telling. It isn't arrogant to say we have a better chance to win more games in CUSA than Northwestern does in the Big 10.2 points

Other than Lifer, I can't tell who's being sarcastic and who's not. These results are from three days of workouts. The vast majority are trying and will get better. Maybe the purpose of posting results on facebook is to put pressure on those that need to step it up. It sure seems to be working in this case.2 points

Every kid on this team had impressive video's. Wesley adds nothing to this team unless we push the ball up the court; where his skills are more evident. He runs and jumps with the best of them. He is not very good in half court and is not a good shooter Obviously coaching has a part to do with it (style) but I've come to the conclusion that this team is slow overall and it starts with the point guards. I liked Chris Jones out of HS but he has not shown the quickness needed to run the offense. He, and the offense, would be better if he could consistently hit open shots. Alzee is even slower. Don't know anything about the last signee but we will not get appreciably better without a quick point guard. (which makes everyone look and play better, including Wesley) Josh White was not cat quick but quick enough to open the offense and he hit his outside shot. (at 5-10) Don't know if you guys have seen Nic Moore of SMU. Quickness at the point makes everyone better. Larry Brown has made a huge difference but this guard in particular. Our best team(s) were lead by Weasel Johnson, Little Joe Hamilton and Josh.2 points
