  1. Beating UNLV by 1 is better than losing to Michigan by 1 if those are the only two options. We needed a real victory, not a moral one for all the fans that showed up.

  5. I start a new job in a new firm, much, much closer to home on Monday as a direct result of going to UNT football games and hanging out with others who do likewise. There really is a whole lot more to this thing than scoreboards and bowl games. Pretty grateful today.

  10. Have now seen LSU a few games now and Odoh is solidly buried on the bench. Things won't improve for him next year when 7-0 Elbert Robinson (Lakeview Centennial) joins the team. I know he committed to JJ instead of UNT but I hate when kids continue to make bonehead decisions. I guess it was the right thing for Benford to do to release him but I still feel he is better than what we have at center.

  12. Well that was a rather short trip down memory lane. Did we only have this year's footage? He was starting QB for 3 yrs & saw game action in 2 other seasons.

  13. I don't disagree that players should continue to improve and develop throughout their careers...they get smarter, stronger, the game slows for them and most are willing to put work in on their own time...but certainly one has to credit coaching as well, especially when you see marked improvements in players. Let's look at some of the guys I mentioned earlier and how they developed. Calvin Watson...was thrust into the guard rotation early after Scott Roniger quit, averaged 8.3ppg as really the only 2-guard on the roster...finished his senior year at 15.7ppg and probably the greatest single game in my memory. Kedrick Hogans...injuries certainly dampened his career, but his junior year when he averaged 8.5ppg on a team with 4 guys in double figures was far more than I ever thought we'd be able to get from the guy we signed late in '07. Alzee Williams...another late signee, averaged 1.9ppg as a freshman, sat out the following season and since has averaged double figures every year since and currently leads the team in scoring. Who could've seen that back in 2010? Well...maybe one person... A year late, I suppose.

  15. They are both buttclowns. Their best coach was Spike Dykes because he understood that there are three phases to football - offense, defense, and special teams. In all the years since Spike Dykes, Tech has shared one Division title, never played in a Big 12 Championship game or shared the actual Big 12 title, nor have they been to a BCS bowl. All Mike Leach does is run off with the mouth. He'll never be a champion. No team he ever coaches will be a champion. The same will hold true for Kliff Kingsbury until he decides defense is as important, if not moreso, than offense. The big dog in Texas is Texas. Spike Dykes was 7-7 in 14 years against Texas. In the 14 season since he retired, Tech is 2-12 against Texas with their Playstation head coaches. Hell, even during Texas' down cycle from 2010-13 Tech was 0-4 against them. That includes the 41-16 mudhole stomping Texas put on them this past season when their defense leaked like a sieve to the degree that they ditched their DC after a couple of games. Sorry. I call a spade a spade. The current Texas Tech coach and Mike Leach both are nothing. They coach 1/3rd of a football game because they are arrogant and stupid. In honor of Leach and Kingsbury, Under Armor should make special clown uniforms for Texas Tech to wear for their home games, complete with big red noses and oversized shoes. Leach, Kingsbury, and Texas Tech, in general, are clowny. They deserve every bit of scorn and derision they attract as a reulst of those two buttboogers, Leach and Kingsbury. And, I'll say more!

  16. With his talent, he should be no one's second, third or fourth choice. For Arkansas to be this late to the party on a talent like him, it should show him something about them.

  18. I know he got a taste of what it is like to be MEAN GREEN at the HOD festivities. But is there a plan for the Green Brigade to welcome him at the official arrival event? I believe he officially joins the Mean Green Nation in early February. It would be wonderful to welcome him with spirit and Mean Green pride. Off topic I want our 2014 schedule so I can begin making travel plans! GMG

  19. And since we're on the topic, how many players ever regressed under JJ? Give me an example of when you saw a JJ player's career stat go down the way Chris Jones's has? Fr. - 14.1ppg on 44% shooting, 4.7rpg, 4.3apg So. - 9.2ppg on 39% shooting, 3.6rpg, 4.6apg Jr. - 8.1ppg on 40% shooting, 3.9rpg, 3.8apg

  20. NM Green, I'd almost bet our fabulous marching ambassadors, ie, the Green Brigade would be a part of such a welcoming ceremony for Dr. Smatresk, but the main question is: How would they enter the main ballroom where the "meet the president" festivities will take place? GMG! PS: I know U of North Texas has many facilities to choose from to have such a welcoming gathering, but wouldn't it have been nice to have had the new hotel and convention center facilities in operations for this fun event? All of that happening in the shadows of Apogee Stadium and inside the Mean Green Village in other words?

  21. Definitely La Tech. We have struggled against them since I have followed the program in '86. Going into Ruston on that cold day that warmed up brilliantly and breaking through the wall of those teams we usually lose to was the sign. I felt at that point we were going to hit six but I was still scared of the old UNT showing up in Hattiesburg. The 41-7 halftime lead in front of another homecoming bummer told me not only were we going bowling, but this team was one of the best I had ever seen in my time following the Mean Green. I called back to Texas and said, "We never go up 41-7 on anyone, even an 19 game losing streak team!" This team was on a mission and I was pumped to get bowl eligible at that point. I know the STAND was up there with the Miracle in the Desert for me, but I didn't appreciate the Rice win until about a month later when I realized who we beat. The next nervousness was waiting on the bowl announcement and hoping I wouldn't have to break the news to the family that I was going to be in Honolulu on the most special day of the year. It all worked out amazingly. All the way down to that freaky 76 degree weather day for the Bowl Game! What I love is that we also left goals to shoot for in 2014. This year I hope this team contends for the West, conference championship and one of the most shocking wins in our history down in Austin in a few short months. Lots of goals - go get'em Mean Green!!!!! GMG

  22. Didn't see any statements of dominance from anyone. However, you did call a guy who (during his tenure in Lubbock) was one of sixteen active coaches to have never had a losing (or a .500) season and one of nine out of that group with at least 5 seasons coached a buttclown. His offense led the NCAA in passing yardage four years in a row so it would seem more than a few defensive coordinators were baffooned by said buttclown. And the other guy you claimed was nothing but an ass and a buttclown helped him set those offensive records as a player, and went 8-5 in his first season as a HC at 34 years old while upsetting the #14 team in the country by two touchdowns in their bowl game. So I'm going to assume that you have some type of personal hate towards Leach/Kingsbury and/or Tech in general, because otherwise your post would make absolutely no sense at all.

  23. This. Until that point, I knew we could win at home, but I didn't know if we could win on the road. With the LA Tech win, it seemed that this year could be special. The Rice game sealed it!

  25. Sam: I keep askin' myself: what is the point to life? Woody: Whew. That's a tough question. Cliff: Ehh. Well, I got the answer. Frasier: Somehow I knew you would. Cliff: Comfortable shoes. Frasier: Shoes? Cliff: Yeah. If you're not wearin' comfortable shoes, life is just chaos. I mean the greatest accomplishments in history have been made by men wearin' accommodating shoes. Uh, Frasier, tell me, who do you think is the greatest thinker in all mankind? Frasier: I don't know, uh... Aristotle. Cliff: There you go: sandals. Perhaps the most comfortable shoe there is. You hardly even know you have them on. Well, that's at least Cliffy's version. Norm's version is probably more accurate, and probably the reason that you're reading this right now.

  31. *Coleman. That was for you UNTFan23. I can't stand that either. Maybe it's just us. As for Odoh, he was an extremely raw big man who barely knew any English. I just can't imagine Benford developing him had he been given the chance. I'd rather not turn this into another hate-on-Benford thread but no player has really progressed under him, and some have notably regressed, as discussed on here.

  33. I just couldn't understand (yet I still sorta' could knowing our culture the last 25 years) why a win over the Wolverines was just not put in as an option period--that's all. You're right, maybe I just don't get it. I know my era as a North Texas student many times creates differences of opinion compared to the various eras of other UNT alums. Doesn't make me appreciate them any less, though. I thought the HOD Bowl game sorta' tied many of our UNT eras together and I still can't get over as to what I witnessed firsthand on New Years Day. Neither can many I've spoken to who did not attend our school. Mean Green 93-98, I know for a fact from reading your posts on this forum and others who know you that............you are one helluva' great North Texas alum and Mean Green fan.

  34. Losing in the bowl game, regardless of the opponent, would of had many of the first timers there/ non diehards saying "same old North Texas."
    1 point
  35. I agree. That's saying a lot, and I don't think any non-North Texas homer would have agreed with you. I would have been within the realm of possibility, but Michigan beat several teams much better than us. And we lost to a couple of teams much worse than Michigan.

  36. A loss to this year's Michigan team would have mostly been bad, except to the few that think Michigan is always good. They ended as the #57 team that lost to the #52 team in their bowl game. I think we would have beaten Michigan this year.
    1 point
  37. I didn't vote because it did not include a win over Michigan at all with any kind of scenario for that to happen. (Didn't App. State beat them a few years ago and in Ann Arbor, of course)? Still, in a perfect world a win over a Big 10 school who would have traveled 15,000 fans adding to our 35,000 would have given the HOD Bowl a better stadium crowd along with good Nielsen TV ratings and probably because with such a matchup I assume ESPN officials would have found one of their prime ESPN stations to broadcast such a game (instead of ESPNU). I no longer have ESPNU on my new "The Dish" package and I understand many others do not have it and never have, either. Hard to watch a game if its not on your cable package thus a kick in the butt for national TV ratings. North Texas/UNVL still won its time slot over the Georgia/Nebraska bowl game in this part of Texas, though. GMG!

  41. No disrespect to the alums that came on board in the 80's, 90's and later but I don't know why or how you can weigh in on any "Best of All-Time" discussions. I don't go back as far as Grand and others, but they are the only posters qualified to comment on these subjects. I'm as happy and proud as any with the past season and HOD win but this team doesn't compare with the team's under Fry in the 70's. I'm very familiar with the team's and talent GrandGreen mentioned from the late 60's. There is a reason why the majority of the national media still remembers "North Texas State" instead of UNT or North Texas.
