  2. It would be kinda cool for him to go to SHSU... do real well there... by the time Mac decides to leave we bring him back to run the program.

  4. Wow. The guy is 13-38, has one winning season in four years, and gets this bump. UNLV seriously thinks they'll never find another coach who can accidentally have a winning season every four years or so? Was I asleep during the major coaching searches, because I don't remember anyone coming after this guy on the heels of his 7-6 season. Nuts.

  5. No one complained because we blew those weak teams out of the water! How many times do that have to be said? For you and Kram. Wayland Baptist and Northwood each had a game-tying 3-point shot attempt in the last minute of the game. That's the problem.

  7. I'm not scared of UTSA. They would have been pounded into the ground if our guys didn't show up so flat. They are a decent team, but we just played poorly and that's why we lost. They were probably on par with Middie Tennie last year and might be close to as good as Rice was this year if all goes right for them. But we win either way if we play as well as we can. They could beat us again next year, but so could most of the teams we play. No reason to fear, just need to play our best.

  9. I think it's funny that when somebody comes on here to tell everybody about starting to sell the tickets earlier, and how they'll be contacting every single person who bought a single ticket for a single game last year, they still get blasted and told they aren't doing extra work, and that's after we're all saying, "gee, why don't they do [exactly what they're now starting to do]"? I'm sure there are more things that can be done, some examples of which we've discussed, but wow, now that we're seeing some extra effort, I would hate to discourage that by making a step in the right direction seem unappreciated.

  11. The rumor circling the search for the next head football coach down in Huntsville is Mike Canales is a finalist and will interview this weekend. I'm not sure what he is making at UNT but the Sam Houston job will be in the 200k range with 300k being the absolute highest. He looks like he could be a solid hire for the Kats. Does anyone have any insight on this?

  13. http://news.msn.com/in-depth/we-are-creating-walmarts-of-higher-education So it seems that the plan is to remove core classes to speed up graduation rates and make education cheaper. Hey, I'm all about graduating more students and keeping costs affordable, but the point of having classes outside of your major is to develop more well-rounded and capable citizens. I also don't think everybody "deserves" a degree. Everybody deserves the chance to work hard to obtain one, but that's not the same thing. I don't think any real higher ed institutions should consider this model. You might as well be a collection of vocational schools if that is to be the case.

  16. I also have to mentioned the 1st half up to the blocked punt in the Georgia game. I had an "out of body" experience-like feeling followed by a sympathetic nervous system overload of excitement, numbness, and confusion. Then the euphoric adrenal sensation dwindled away and reality set in. It was a great moment in time for me though in relation to one of the best memory of the season.

  20. What he's done so far is amazing, but the only coach who is in lifetime contract territory for NT is John Hedlund. And he practically has one already considering he's been here for almost 20 seasons.

  21. Really a good kid. He is not on campus at this time and Unknown on eligibity status (redshirt or not), didn't ask him that. Grades are no issue, computer science major. Says he wants to transfer to UNT and walk on. Coming from a highly disciplined high school program at China Spring was unhappy with the undisciplined atmoshphere at A&M Commerce. Says if Ryan likes the coaches at UNT, that is the place for him. Played Dline in high school sparingly (ie. goal line) because coach does not play his starting olinemen both ways. Kid is very strong and is a solid 280.

  27. Stupid comes to my mind! I don't have a problem with extending the man but shouldn't he at least reach .500 before we discuss a lifetime contract? Everyone knows that this program had been down for a while; in part because of the lack of head coach experience from the guys running the show (and on shoe string budgets) We need to stop fearing that Mac is the only coach in America we can attract to improve upon the past 1-2 win seasons by going 5-7, 4-8 and then 9-4 (n a bad league); with someone else's recruits. He is deserving of an extension and some extra movie passes. History has shown that long-term contracts are not healthy. (Especially at North Texas) In terms of some better teams and seasons, Hayden Fry compiled the following record. (In the dual role of AD; due to budget issues) 1975 North Texas State 7–4 1976 North Texas State 7–4 1977 North Texas State 10–1 16th National Ranking 1978 North Texas State 9–2 North Texas: 40–23 Tied for 1st in the Mo Valley in 1973. Some of the more notable (HOF) players and recruiting was done under Fry; while playing at Fouts with 20k less students in a town of only 40K. residents.

  28. I think you had inside information from Benford on the scheduling and just paid off the NCAA to let us off the hook. We never walked on the moon, Elivis ain't dead, you ain't going crazy, it's all in your head. Congrats to the guys on the win. Never happier to pay a bet.

  32. I know you are getting bent out of shape over the word lifetime, but is that a word that Vito used in his story, or was it used by the AD. You have immediately jumped to the conclusion that the AD used that term and that they have used the word in the contract. I get the impression that it may have been added by Vito for his story, but I could also be wrong here. Maybe we should wait and see what is announced before we jump to the conclusion that the sky is falling.

  33. When I took my college visit to Texas Tech it rained. In the middle of a sandstorm. Mud. It rained mud. It wasn't quite biblical, but it did seem like a portent to stay away.

  34. If Coach Mac were 40 and unproven, then I would be concerned, but he will likely coach 5 more years at the most. Plus, his personality will not allow him to "rest on his laurels" and coast. He is committed to building this program, has shown he knows what he is doing, connects with students and fans of all ages, is a great representative for North Texas, brings passion to the position that I have never seen at North Texas and brings respect to our program. Great move.

  36. I loved the timing more than anything. Our centennial year and first year in CUSA, which was also the first winning season, first bowl, and first bowl win in a long time, happened to occur just as we started a group way out here, so the huge increase in televised games coupled with actually winning and being competitive against the big boys like Georgia made it easy to show pride around a lot of people who had never heard of us. Even beyond all of the alumni we're trying to awaken, all of these things coming together made it easier to start the momentum in getting some name recognition out here amidst all of the MWC and PAC-12 schools and alumni. As for on the field, it was hard not to stay excited because all three phases were so exciting for so much of the season that you tended to expect something crazy and awesome on almost every play! Between Brelan on offense and returns and Lee on defense I almost always had my one guy I was watching the most but of course there was so much greatness all around that the whole team was fun to watch. So I'd say the constant excitement and rarity of lapses thereof were the best part of the actual games.

  39. I am unsure how many teams play in exhibition games. ECU played 3 or 4 in their regular season schedule. I have no problem scheduling 2 a year and 1 for an exhibition game. Hopefully next year the lesson is learned.

  40. And that somehow changes the point? Tons of teams play 1 or 2 division 2 or NAIA schools. They do not count for them either. All we needed to do was cancel Waylon baptist and schedule UTA and there would be zero gripes or issues. That was the big mistake. I understand that because of our tournament there may have been an issue but maybe they should have tried harder.

  43. Is that possible? I am unsure what all actions can and cannot be taken to be honest. This is a huge mess but I will not let it bother my interest in UNT hoops. I just feel bad for everyone involved and hope it works out.

  45. I'm just curious because it said if UNT would have to forfiet any games (plural). Would we have to forfiet more then one? This is a low blow for sure but I will still show up and support the team. It sucks for everyone involved though.
