No. Just no. 2013 was a very nice season, but there was no conference championship and failure when there was an opportunity to get one. We don't play in the SEC, folks. 3 year extension. RV and the BOR shouldn't bite off more than they can chew (don't extend longer than you are willing to pay off). It was 9-4, not 14-0. Lets not make decisions based on emotion.14 points

If Coach Mac were 40 and unproven, then I would be concerned, but he will likely coach 5 more years at the most. Plus, his personality will not allow him to "rest on his laurels" and coast. He is committed to building this program, has shown he knows what he is doing, connects with students and fans of all ages, is a great representative for North Texas, brings passion to the position that I have never seen at North Texas and brings respect to our program. Great move.7 points

Plus, are we really surprised at this point, that RV would make a questionable decision involving coaching?5 points

Benford doesn't work in the world today. He's an east side institution and he's in decay. And if I had a program I wished to portray, I would surely find another way. You see, Andrew was always taught that boy meets girl. Falls in love gets married and forgets the world. Nine months later, that sweet RAW's on the way, kiss Skiver on the cheek and life's ok.5 points

Personally, I think this is only the beginning for this team. Our breakout season locally. Now we need a national breakout. Starts with UT.4 points

I do when the sentence is written thusly: " essentially a lifetime contract for McCarney that will take him through the end of his career." I feel like all you read in that sentence was the word "lifetime" and hit then hit the overreact button. Mac will be 61 in July. He's had some serious health issues. I suspect the man has a plan with regard to retirement age and how long he wishes to coach coupled with his football plan for North Texas and how long he feels it will take to accomplish that. In no way do I think he has designs on being a Joe Paterno and sticking around until he's 80+ years old. (Conjecture on my part for sure.) But in the context of what Vito wrote "Lifetime" would mean where Mac has planned to jump off the coaching train and not until his life is over. And if I had to place a bet on what that timeline is I'd say probably around the time Mac is 65-67. I hope we get another 5+ years out of the man myself.4 points

This! Plus the fact that Mac is building a real D-1 program that we have never had here at NT. Who could argue that this was possibly our best season and we showed well on national TV every time we had the opportunity. I say give Mac his contract and be happy that we have him for the duration. Look at the coaching hires as well. Top notch assistants and we all know they can make or break your program. We lost coach Nelson, but may have upgraded with Coach Patrick. Do it! This is what happens when you hire a well respected and well connected coach. He has been able to make solid hire after solid hire. He doesn't have to beat around the bush either I bet. Probably called Kevin up and said "Kevin I got a coaching position open you in or out?" Done. Hopefully he can close the deal with Mr. Washington. Glad this got done so quickly to.4 points

Maybe he knows the Rock ? Maybe we can get a Rock vs Stone Cold halftime match during the SMU game... Tickets would go for $100 a pop and easily sell out4 points

For those who wanted that ace d-line recruiter, looks like we may have just gotten that guy.4 points

Every single thing about the Rice game. Alternate unis, SOW on the hat, Abbe exploding onto the scene as a FB, THE STAND... That's the best I've ever felt about North Texas football walking out of a game.4 points

"Unanimously approved"...that's a really great sign in terms of the administration I think.3 points

What might have taken place during the contract extension negotiations is that Coach Mac expressed his timeline for retiring and wanted to be guaranteed till the end of his planned career. Not a big deal if we're only talking about another 3 or 4 years added to his time remaining on his current contract, which is in year 3 of 5.3 points

Really, you are going to compare this to the Penn State scandal? Sometimes you just keep reaching down and picking up turds.3 points

You know this how? Oh, wait, just conjecture on your part. Shocking.3 points

A lot of people said they would lose faith in Mac if he kept DT as the starter. Aside from a couple of down games, he was still steady enough to get us one of the best seasons in school history. Yes, there were a lot of other factors that played into that, but he knew the offense well and was able to execute just fine. If 9-4 in our first season in a new conference is an example of what happens when some fans don't trust the coach, then that's fine by me. Good luck to Brock, hope he gets a chance to turn things around at UNC in more ways than one.3 points

The play of the defensive line all year. Far exceeded my expectations coming into the season and set the tone for a good CUSA defense overall.3 points

Ridiculous. Berglund had every leg up to take over the job. He could t get it done. Hell, he couldn't beat out a true freshman. He was 4th team for a reason. Writing was on the wall after the weird JUCO thing. Good luck, Brock.3 points

This reminds me. DT90 please stay with us on this board. As a program and fan base we are in desperate need of "reasonable" perspective regarding UNT's situation and/or culture.2 points

Lifetime contracts are about as smart as coach-in-waiting deals.2 points

Maybe the "Lifetime" contract will be for being the head coach for a maybe five years and then move into a role in the AD office after that.2 points

I'm never a huge fan of that kind of nickname but USF was a program to be reckoned with in the early-mid 2000s. They went from FCS to Big East in two years. Let's see how quick Mac can move us up.2 points

No Lifetime Contract, Yet!?!? 1-2 yrs now and if he has a similar year next year with his recruits running the ship then I am all about letting him have the reigns, but HELL NO right now. Besides RV needs to be more worried about the train wrecks in the Super Pit and his own job.2 points

Way too many favorites from this great season to limit to just one so here are my most memorable ones: -Hearing George Dunham yell "Brelan Got Away" on his call of Chancellor's KO Return TD at Georgia. -Sed Ellis monster hit on the MUTS QB. -Finally experiencing a two game Mean Green winning streak. -At the UNT New Year's Eve party, KRAM1 predicted that Derek Thompson would roll right and throw back left to Drew Miller for a TD in the HOD game.2 points

Awesome news! Hope it is true. Perfect fit for the Green! "this is just the beginning....."2 points

Where in the world in coach Mac and RV getting the budget to hire assistants like this? Only 1 reason UNT hasn't been successful in past years, DD era comes to mind, is UNT wouldn't fund athletics properly ie staduim, other facilities, and competitive head and assistant coaches salaries. Good to see some resources by athletic department being deployed. Maybe RV is using the buyout money it would take to get a quality basketball head coach and using on the football side. Now if RV would have the gutts to end his "man crush" with coach Benford our basketball team could make some much needed inprovement. JJ was one of the few coaches at UNT producing winning results before coach Mac arrived and now it's Dr. Jekel (sp) and Mr. Hyde as far as our FB and BB teams are concerned. Coach Mac and staff keep up the good work. Go Mean Green!!2 points

Given how quickly we made the hire, probably knew that Nelson was retiring for a little while and may have wanted to get all the loose ends handled with Patrick before making the announcement. Solid hire.2 points

That's pretty cool, I hope they our able to remember this for years to come.2 points

After NT's first softball coach, Stegal I think, played about 20 games over the NCAA limit, it looks likes someone on the AD staff should be checking out the schedules for compliance.2 points

You could see this was going to happen at Southern Miss. When every player that traveled gets in the game EXCEPT Bergland, you knew his fate had been sealed. I just think there is something VERY wrong with this young man. I don't know if it is attitude, smarts, effort, or something else. I hope he gets it figured out soon.... and I hope he gets his degree. Football will be a small part of this man's life in ten years. I really hope he walks away from all of this with his diploma. Good luck BB.2 points

Most of us don't coach. Most of us don't answer the phone at the Athletic Dept. Most of us don't work at the concession stand or check tickets at the gate. But what all of us can do is to buy season tickets. There are a million reasons not to buy season tickets. And there is only one reason to buy...To support Mean Green football. Your season ticket purchase says, "Count me in. I'll support North Texas football with my money and, since I've already purchased the ticket-with my presence." Please don't tell us why you can't buy season tickets. Tell us that you stepped up and put your money where your mouth is. Beat Texas GO MEAN GREEN2 points
