So now you expected a loss to USM. Before the game you said this? Posted 09 January 2014 - 06:01 PM I think TJ Taylor goes off and we win this one by single digits. He needs a heavy does of three point help from Vaughs and Aniefiok as well. I feel like before every game you talk about how we are going to win and then after nothing but excuses not involving Benford.4 points

I think they're still too busy trying to get the bowl tickets mailed out. Of course UTSA didn't have to bother with that, so I guess they've had some free time.4 points

Another step backward in this game. I will never understand Benford's substitution patterns, it is almost like he wants to personally destroy any rhythm or momentum established by the team. I don't know how many times in this game, that a player made a bad play and Benford called for a substitution whether the player had been in seconds or more. By the time the substitution was actually made, the player may have redeemed them-self several times. Pick your best 5 to 8 players and give them all the time unless the game is out of question. Hint. Colemen is not in that group or is Walton. I would give 30 minutes every game to Aniefiok, Taylor, Williams, Williams, Jones and Voss; until someone demonstrates they are better.3 points

Counting chickens before they hatch is a dangerous game. I do think we will win more than 10 games this year (maybe 12, 13 if we are lucky), but never overestimate a Benford coached team, my friend. As far as paying you, I won't be doing that. I WILL be paying the Andrew Smith Scholarship fund, as previously agreed. ;-) Don't be a sore winner and ask for a public presentation and photo op.3 points

I didn't realize this was a day game. I came to post that UNT was a 9 point favorite in Vegas. I guess not.2 points

Went to the game and i have one question. Why does Benford even call a timeout? He calls the TO they sit around and talk and come out and do what they have been doing all day. Tulane is no powerhouse and we are just plain bad.2 points

Ever prone to exaggeration or hyperbole? Not questioning that you work with a lot of these wealthy folks at all. There are many many wealthy folk in the DFW area, and maybe a surprise to some here, not all are TCU or SMU grads...and not all, in any way, are SMU and TCU grads wealthy from birth. One will find wealthy families sending kids to lots of different private schools for one reason or another, but also to many public institutions...dare I even say UNT? Stereotyping every student at TCU or SMU as "independently wealthy" is really going a bit far. I know several SMU and TCU grads and have worked with lots during my 40plus career in financial services. Yes, a couple were pretty darn well off from a family standpoint, but the majority were just like the rest of us, and pretty darn nice folks. Even have a couple of TCU grad relatives...hardly "trust babies" or independently wealthy and none had trust funds set up for them at birth. Grew up in Dallas next door to an SMU grad who was a controller for one of the Hunt companies...yep, SMU grad...great guy...1400 square foot house! Hardly a trust fund baby. In working with the Private Wealth Management Group at Citicorp (SmithBarney) at the time, I worked with quite a few extremely rich people...had to have a min. of $25,000,000 net with with at least $5,000,000 liquid before our group could work with you. I think many here might be surprised just how many of those folks in this area WERE NOT SMU or TCU grads compared to a few that were. Each had a different story and a different background. While some certainly fit the "inherited rich" stereotype of privilege, the majority were self-made "rich" starting and building their own businesses or were hardworking business folks who claimed the corporate ladder. One, in fact, was a McDonald lady executive who started as a burger flipper in a local Mickey D's as she had to work to help pay her public university tuition. No trust baby this lady...and not a TCU or SMU grad either. Learned a lot from these people, and was always shocked by the challenges that many had in trying to deal with their wealth. Challenges I had never thought would be there and which I came away happy that I did not have to personally deal with. It really is all about attitude and how one chooses to "see" and react to the world around them. Fun stuff sometimes, right Oldguy, in working with these folks...other times not so much.2 points

I don't think the problem is his opinion. I think the problem is that he apparently believes that every hire they make should be cleared with him first. If that was the case, there would be no reason to have a full-on AD, because the hiring and supervision of coaches would all be done via a committee of the richest donors. As to the game itself, I think if we see the type of all-around play that we saw this year against Ball and Rice, there's a decent chance we take this one unless UT has a huge improvement by the 1st game. If all of the question marks regarding new starters lead to the same level of pleasant surprise as we had this year, we could have quite a game on our hands!2 points

It's a really good thread... We must talk about these important things over and over!! we must talk to the athletic department and encourage them to take an action and do something they have never done before. GMG2 points

Winning recruiting battles with Texas State is, to the general population, not impressive. Getting players that Houston, Texas Tech, TCU etc wanted is impressive. Oh well, one step at a time.2 points

This won't happen, like most of you stated not a good place to be a HC. He will be in Denton next year.2 points

Our offensive running game will be a big strength in 2014 if we have the passing attack - all that is needed there is the QB, we will have the receivers.1 point

i think if someone just jumped into this thread on page 8 it would seem like an Andrew vs the board war going down. man oh man, hang there good buddy (and be smart with your battles). i saw great improvement tonight. i saw much to be worked on too (including training refs). also, IF what benford said is true about having players shot 100 free throws every practice, then i don't blame him on the FT last night. also, i think we have the depth to run harder, longer. i want to see the pedal down from tip to buzzer. let's see what happens tomorrow, yeah?!1 point

We need Marley. One thing this team is seriously lacking are neck tats. MORE NECK TATS MACK!!!!1 point

I have been among Benford's many critics and think the AD made a very bad choice to led what could have been one of the greatest teams in NT basketball history. There have been a lot of bombs laid this year also such as BYU, Northwood, and SFU. But maybe it is time to forget all that and enjoy the current season. Benford is coaching better and the team is responding. This team has talent and a lot of potential. They havn't sleep walked in a game in some time and played IMO very well against USM and A&M. Aniefiok and Jordan Williams can be stars in this league. Jones has turned in a distribute first point and Alzee is always steady. Taylor still is not anywhere near were he should be on the court, but the talent is there. If Gant and Colemen can gain control over their fouls than they can really elevate this team. Voss is the most dependable big and should continue to improve. I am not predicted a run for the CUSA championship, but this team is not nearly as bad as some of you are portraying. When it comes to NT men's basketball; Lets ignore the past, enjoy the present, and hope for the future.1 point

"He should come here to UNT. We've got an open competition as well. The none of the competitors has much game experience. You gotta admit, Tech did kind of tank after he was injured. And, Kingsbury looks like he's going to be one of those coaches who rotates QBs every game." Check the schedule though. Mayfield played against the sisters of the poor, and Davis Webb STILL put up better numbers. With Brewer coming back and Webb outperforming Mayfield, it's not out of the realm of possibility he'd have been a three at Tech next year.1 point

Preach on my man. Don't forget that Lance Dunbar's records were under the 2 years he played under Canales. I agree Lance is a special player, but you can't argue that he played 1/2 of his career under Canales calling the plays. No matter what KingDL says, I will brag about the work Canales has done at UNT. So what if I am part of his family, that means I know more than most what he has given and sacrificed for the success and turn around of the UNT football program. Canales will get his chance as a HC, but it won't be this upcoming season. I hope Canales stays at UNT for a long time, I love Denton, I have grown to love the MeanGreen. And can't imagine cheering for UNT on Saturdays next year and watching the Meangreen win another bowl game.1 point

I'll be honest, my area of expertise is in football and baseball as far as knowing the ins and outs of the game. I played both on a 5A varsity level, still play club baseball at UNT, and I stopped playing basketball for my school once I got to high school. I've been intently following all three sports professionally and college since I was 7, but I'm not going to pretend like I can explain all the zones or hybrids like box and 1 or diamond and 1. But it doesn't take that to understand what our issues are. I'm not screaming for our coach to be fired, but it's pretty obvious that it was a bad hire whether you can coach college basketball or not. Our player's have not developed well under him and many regressed, we consistently get off to slow starts, we have bad fundamentals, we don't have good rhythm or shot selection on offense, and out of the 5 high school kids who have been committed the last two years 0 are playing on the team right now. Not to mention according to Tasty, who knows as much about college basketball as anyone, has said that Benford has been shady on the recruiting trail, committing violations that could hurt this program down the line. Those are the reasons a lot of people want him fired, and it doesn't take a division 1 basketball coach or analyst to see that. We have looked better this year as a team, granted I can't say we've played a team that's indisputably more athletic than us. We do have a chance to make some noise in CUSA play and it should be fun to watch, and we should give Benford a chance and support. We are pretty close to being a good CUSA team especially of USM is at the top of this conference.1 point

Garrick was Petrino's OC/QB coach at Arkansas. Combine that with UAB being a dead end job, and it is easy to see why he split for Louisville. As for Chico...tough call if they offer him the job. It is dead end. But, even in a record-setting season, the fans here could think of nothing to do but bitch about him and second guess him at every turn. In a record setting year, calling plays for guys who led and climbed the career record charts in passing, rushing, receiving, total offense, and all-purpose yards in Thompson, Byrd, and Chancellor, the fans here were about 113% unappreciative of him. I'd like to see Chico as the head coach somewhere. But, UAB...they'd have to double or triple what he was making here. He has to know that it's only a two to three year gig at most, win or lose.1 point

It is funny how he thinks he should have been handed the starting job again when he came back from injury but didn't think Brewer should get the job back when Brewer came back from injury.1 point

Of course, if this were any other coach at any other school decrying the star system, everyone on this board would be hoisting him up on their shoulders and throwing him a pizza party.1 point

I agree. Sorry last comment on this but that was the original meaning from a friend of mine. He said 2-3 can shut down the three depending on your personnel and how you choose to run. Got jumped all over and now a lot of my buddies do not even bother coming here which stink because they have she'd and coached and know a lot more most people including myself. I was not trying to coma in (unless your talking about the refs). Bit apparently I always have to get on the defensive because I support this team, the players, and the coach. Everyone needs work but I love watching them play and am not in favor of bashing Benford. We played a tough game and the players never gave up. Get ready for Tulane and let's win Saturday!1 point

I know I will be judged harshly, but I see a lot of fans on here talking basketball like you would expect fans too. A lot of upset people with the loss which I understand, but don't claim to know how to fix things. Don't claim you know how to attack the 2-3 or 1-3-1. Because there are all kinds of different ways depending on personnel and matchups. There is not much basketball analyzing on here just lots of complaining. It was a tough loss. I think we all can agree on there is talent on the team. It's just not always working as a collective unit right now. I think we can also say this team is ahead of last yrs group. I think they can be a threat down the stretch if things go right. As a fan I'm happy with the effort and displeased with the execution, but I think they are worth watching.1 point

Or miss FT's. I am not usually one to bemoan it, but when you get in the bonus that early (11 minutes to go!), you have to take advantage of getting to the stripe.1 point

Some on this message board cannot see past their noses when it concerns our athletic's program future and for our particular program that has not always bode well the last 30 or so years looking at all our results . Had we shown more solidarity as an alumnus group during all those decades we could have "demanded" a Dan McCarney kind of hire (and even God forbid off a Fry coaching tree) a long time ago. We rather got caught up in the same ol' hiring modus operendi in Denton which never produced not one North Texas HFC who left Denton above .500.....go freakin' figure. Some look at new ideas on this board as goofy, dumb-arsed waste of time and just back to more of the "just not the kind of thing we ever do in Denton" kind of thinking, but when we built a 30,850 seat "new stadium" in this new millenium we were still sorta' putting our own selves in our own place with how we felt about even our future; that is, we seemed to think that we will always be a Sun Belt'esque kind of school--nothing more and for sure never a Top 25 ranked kind of football program. Some of the red numbers I will get for this post will (in fact) be from some of that very crowd who thought that way and with some who still do. For North Texas to expand our stadium another 9K to get it up to 40,000 would make another completely new kind of statement from our school about what we think now about our school moving ahead, but still a few on this board will use their old faithful, trusted yet hardly proven theory of............... "WE MUST FILL APOGEE FIRST THEN JUST THINK ABOUT IT MAKE IT LARGER OUT THERE IN THE SWEET BY & BY which begs this following question........................... How many times did we fill Fouts Field before we had dirt turning ceremonies for Apogee Stadium? HINT: You can count that number of capacity crowds at the 30,500 seat Fouts Field on less than 1 finger--that's how many times. HINT 2: That means we never filled Fouts Field to capacity at that particular seating capacity. So............anymore new theories on when we should expand Apogee? UH has us beat with new stadium capacity beginning this Fall, but isn't it a new ball game somewhat in Denton? As in North Texas became a new and different kind of DFW area sports animal based on what I call a perfect storm which took place on New Years Day at the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium when most every UNT constituency I can think of showed up en mass? An event which all but shocked some of our (always) small time thinkers who know nothing else but.....small time thinking. In closing................we don't need think too small too long for Apogee Stadium lest in today's NCAA our school will get left behind (once again). Funny thing with that is I think even those who rarely can see past today might possibly even agree with that. GMG!1 point

--Why so negative [ not in Dallas area, don't see the games ] ? We are 9-5 and have recently defeated A&M. I'm not so impressed with So. Miss record, lots of pussy-cat teams on their schedule and I am sure they would like to ignore their Louisville game ( big blowout ).. --- In the good old MVC days when we played in the Men's gym... you could not get a seat unless you showed up very early at least during the week. We often weren't that good but the crowd was wild and games were fun.1 point
