  1. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. It is not the coach's job to teach fundamentals is my new favorite. Also, better call Hudson Houck and let him know he wasted his life on middle school BS.

  5. ....down here in Marble Falls, listening to a San Antonio radio station, here comes a radio ad for utsa football season tickets! Already looking for season ticket purchasers and football is eight months away! Must be nice. Has our Athletic Department started their big season ticket blitz for UNT football?

  8. I'll be honest, my area of expertise is in football and baseball as far as knowing the ins and outs of the game. I played both on a 5A varsity level, still play club baseball at UNT, and I stopped playing basketball for my school once I got to high school. I've been intently following all three sports professionally and college since I was 7, but I'm not going to pretend like I can explain all the zones or hybrids like box and 1 or diamond and 1. But it doesn't take that to understand what our issues are. I'm not screaming for our coach to be fired, but it's pretty obvious that it was a bad hire whether you can coach college basketball or not. Our player's have not developed well under him and many regressed, we consistently get off to slow starts, we have bad fundamentals, we don't have good rhythm or shot selection on offense, and out of the 5 high school kids who have been committed the last two years 0 are playing on the team right now. Not to mention according to Tasty, who knows as much about college basketball as anyone, has said that Benford has been shady on the recruiting trail, committing violations that could hurt this program down the line. Those are the reasons a lot of people want him fired, and it doesn't take a division 1 basketball coach or analyst to see that. We have looked better this year as a team, granted I can't say we've played a team that's indisputably more athletic than us. We do have a chance to make some noise in CUSA play and it should be fun to watch, and we should give Benford a chance and support. We are pretty close to being a good CUSA team especially of USM is at the top of this conference.

  9. Apogee if freaking awesome. Have any of these willy nilly expansion proponents been to a road game since Apogee opened? Did they hear the lack of thunderous noise as the cavernous Cotton Bowl swallowed up the cheers of 38,000 Mean Green fans? They built Apogee smaller, but utterly first class top to bottom. Place is amazing. As for the counter argument that we weren't selling out Fouts before building Apogee, Fouts was falling down. It was like playing in an ancient Roman ruins. And wisely, when they build Apogee, they knew attendance was only about 18,000 at the time, so they chose capacity wisely. Sometimes, life should be about quality, not how high on the fence you can piss. I think that concept has been lost on us as a culture, not limited to college football stadiums.

  10. Man, Andrew, I really don't like to bash you at all and I like when I get to agree with you, but come on. Things you've said lately: 1. BYU will be a top 20 team because of the way they shellacked us. Basically you've been downplaying teams before games, saying we have a chance and/or they aren't that good, then saying they're a good team after they blow us out or play us much closer than they should have. 2. Northwood is as good as a bottom level CUSA team. Maybe we do better against the bottom rung of CUSA than we did against Northwood, but come on. 3. We are 11-4 in your world. You better believe we should be 11-4 or better, especially considering we probably have not played a team more athletic than us all season. But we aren't. 4. Turnovers, missed free throws, fundamentals are not coaching problems. You constantly overlook player development and the fact that a good coach has teams that are fundamentally sound. How often do you hear "yeah he's a good coach but his teams are never fundamentally sound and don't play well together," in situation's outside of our's. CJ's development under Benford has been one of the most disappointing things during his tenure. You aren't a Benford backer, but I really feel like you need to open your eyes and take the green-tinted sunglasses off.

  11. How many walk-ons have become scholarship players under McCarney? It seems like a bunch. I think Kenny Buyers, Kaydon Kirby, Zach Paul, Blake Macek, and Brandon McCoy were all walk-ons and big contributors. (You can correct me and add to the list.) Mac seems to pull in good walk-ons and transfers every year who end up with scholarships. It's a great selling point as there are some really good players that fall through the cracks.

  12. I have been among Benford's many critics and think the AD made a very bad choice to led what could have been one of the greatest teams in NT basketball history. There have been a lot of bombs laid this year also such as BYU, Northwood, and SFU. But maybe it is time to forget all that and enjoy the current season. Benford is coaching better and the team is responding. This team has talent and a lot of potential. They havn't sleep walked in a game in some time and played IMO very well against USM and A&M. Aniefiok and Jordan Williams can be stars in this league. Jones has turned in a distribute first point and Alzee is always steady. Taylor still is not anywhere near were he should be on the court, but the talent is there. If Gant and Colemen can gain control over their fouls than they can really elevate this team. Voss is the most dependable big and should continue to improve. I am not predicted a run for the CUSA championship, but this team is not nearly as bad as some of you are portraying. When it comes to NT men's basketball; Lets ignore the past, enjoy the present, and hope for the future.

  14. The same reason 20k+ (I'm guessing) choose to attend Texas State at any given time. Even for football players, choosing which college to attend is not always as much a no-brainer as we sometimes make it out to be. Different strokes, different folks. That, and Coach Fran is still a pretty good coach.

  15. Winning recruiting battles with Texas State is, to the general population, not impressive. Getting players that Houston, Texas Tech, TCU etc wanted is impressive. Oh well, one step at a time.

  18. Don't ever do that, it limits recruiting calls that he can make. The NCAA treats a HCIW the same as a HC. This seems like the ender for a lot of the other candidates. This guy wins and would be a good hire for them.

  21. This. Getting beat by double digits at home is not, and should never be, considered a win. Also, I miss it when JJ would take off his jacket when he got mad at the refs. Nothing against Benford, just an observation.

  22. I agree with Andrew. It's not just the questionable calls, they stopped the game twice and killed any momentum that we had. If southern miss is the best team in cusa, then we have a chance. Tj Taylor is the real deal, and he will just keep getting better.

  25. We all have had hopes for better and bigger things at UNT....some of us for over 30 yrs. We were helped along when they build the athletic center..we just needed a stadium....then...ground breaking and we ended up with Apogee...just a great stadium. We have seen a great hire in Dan Mac and the other coaches, tailgating has been great...marketing seems to have improved...now we are in CUSA...attendance has improved and the students are really pulling their weight. After the HOD bowl, the crowd and the events...what a fun time, and perhaps a gaze into the future of what could be. My vision just got bigger...I'm more hopeful...the AD and admin are onboard....momentum..thats what it is. We will soon have a new hotel /convention center and bar/restaurant at Apogee. All we need to do is capitalize on whats happening now....momentum ! So, I see potential...potential for a big stepup in attendance, season tickets, exposure...I see we can hopefully get crowds near capacity at Apogee and then look at expanding with a deck and maybe add'l suites ...say 10000 seats. More FUN for everyone..UNT game as the local EVENT..not to be missed. Hopefully the velocity of growth in the UNT football program will be good for the next several years...we will catch up where we should be....finally. So........has your vision changed since the HOD Bowl?....Do you think Dan Mac or RV's vision has changed....Is your vision Bigger? This post has been promoted to an article

  27. I was impressed with NT. If USM is indeed the cream of the league, NT should do fine. NT was just as athletic and played just as hard. The problem with this game was a horrible job by the refs. I don't think I have ever seen as many traveling calls. I don't dispute most of the calls but you can call a legitimate foul almost at anytime, but good referees don't completely take over the game. I thought NT played very well against the their press. The only compliant I have against Benford, is I don't understand why he only let his hottest player only play about half the game. Jordan Williams let the comeback charge, only to be benched for the middle part of the second half. Another bad game for the NT bigs, if they ever get it together; this team could be very good. Gant looked like Tony Mitchell swatting those USM shots in the beginning of the game.

  28. I'm 32 and I think we technically all have to type at a screen - unless you have Google Glass or something super cool like that. I also hope you never stop being you and saying what's in your heart. Have you considered a weekly Heard This? feature where you convey some of the knowledge and insights your contacts convey to you without giving up actual names? I know I would enjoy the education and would love to learn more about hoops since my parque floor was recently repossessed because of a credit card I signed up for and forgot about after just wanting a free t-shirt. Just an idea so the rising tide can lift all ships... Not the Crimson Tide though. They lost to OU and the SEC sucks now. Just a little sports humor about the week

  33. If the head of the refs watched he should have picked up on what not to do. The refs should never dictate the pass of the game. It becomes bogged down and super boring when they call a travel or a foul every minute. It never seems to be like that on TV. You could watch ACC teams play and goes 4 or 5 minutes without a whistle. But of course in the super pit we cannot go a minute without a whistle...

  34. Not sure I would call our offense a going one on one plan. I would actually much prefer that. We really seem to pass it around and then suddenly drive it into the paint out of control in hopes of a foul being called. I missed the days when you would ISO take a step and knock the jumper over the defender. I swear I have not played in a couple years and I could still but my shoulder into some of these guys and drop the fader over them for three. It's something these guys are capable of doing and idk why they do not. They pass on some really easy scoring opportunities.

  35. Potentially yes but these both of these two games really did have a lot of outside interference. They really did. Were you not there? Our players came out fired up and ready to go and got placed in check really fast. Southern Miss was in the 1-1 at the 12 or 13 minute mark of the half. We did not get into the 1 and 1 until 2:58 left in the game. That is very abnormal.

  36. There are some great post here...I really enjoyed Plum & UNTFan23's duel....both good...both funny...I + arrowed both guys! It's pretty exciting that we can envision, a little more clearly, what this place could be like in 10-20 years. I agree with HoustonEagle....open spaces can really kill the football environment...let's max what we have first....

  37. You are just terrible at analyzing basketball. Coaches job is to get everyone on the same page and settle them down when they kept giving up those rebounds off the free throws. One example of Benford'd. Although he is improving...at the cost of the fanbase.
    2 points
  38. And what was with the intentional foul on Vaughs? Can someone explain to me how that is two free throws and then the ball? It was not an open lane foul. Alzee was ahead of everyone on the play so why would he get free throws? I thought you only got free throws if they had an open lane and no defenders in front of them? Is that not correct? That is how it works in the NBA. Alzee was ahead of everyone on that play so it made no sense. Not to mention Colmans moving screen which was called a flagrant foul..... Yea. Awful refs tonight. Just awful.

  41. This story makes me sad. Baker's obviously got some talent, but his brain hasn't caught up to his talent at this point in his life. Baker wanted OU to ask him to college football prom, but TCU beat them to it, but then they made plans with someone else the week before the big dance. He had Tech as a backup date, so went with them at the last minute. Before the first hour of prom was up, he got mad at Tech because they danced with other QBs. His solution to the problem is to go chasing after OU, who, along with their date Trevor Knight, is already headed to the after party. I don't think John Hughes himself could find a silver lining in this story.

  44. I think he's overestimating his skills. He could probably get a scholarship somewhere but he's barking up the wrong tree at OU. They have a QB. Several actually. I hope he enjoys being irrelevant on the scout team after burning some eligibility while paying out of state tuition.

  45. . I have no response for you. Figure it out for yourself. You're one of the small time thinkers who constantly lives in the past and has Denton and Denton County in some kind of time warp with populations that never grew. That post was not mean't for your kind to read whatsoever....move on.
    2 points
  46. I disagree. I live in Plano and drive to Denton anytime I can to attend games. I'm sure some will think that and that is fine. Those people exist everywhere. I have Texas friends and they didn't care to go to FW when they were playing TCU this past season. People don't go to Rangers games that live pretty far from Arlington because it's too damn far and can be a beating. Those that will want to make that kind of excuse will make them. We need to give people a reason to come. We had a great season but we better continue to keep it up and be on the upswing. Once that happens things will slowly change. It's a process.

  48. Its typical SMU fandom talk, but they aren't going to get out of the series for at least the first two years, probably the first four years as well.. They'll need the gate that a home game against UNT will provide in 2015, for sure. Beyond that, as I have said before, I doubt that series makes it too far out into the distant future, unless, of course, we go back to sucking. Over the last 25 years, UNT has wanted to SMU anytime, anywhere. SMU has played us when it was painfully obvious that they needed us on their schedule. Think 1989, 1990, and 1992, when they were a glorified i-aa school and they needed a few home games. We gave them that in a 2 for 1. We didn't play again 2006 and 2007, when SMU was desperately hoping to prop up Phil Bennett and get him a winning record (that was hopeless). We cost them a bowl bid in 2006 and gave them their only win in 2007. They agreed to play this "series" with us when UNT looked like death warmed over and they looked like they were ready to rise up to somehing great under June Jones. BUt Dan McCarney has started to do what Dan McCarney has always done--build up a program thru its strength& conditioning regiment and by developing the lines. June Jones, on the other hand, decided to go after the Arizona State job, only to get shafted in the end, and leaving SMU with a coach that might as well be lame-duck with his players, coaches, and fans. And to top it off, they were stupid enough to extend him!! SMU money will probably save the day if they need it to, but while these two teams do play, we need to remind everyone in the DFW area that SMU is a dead horse. Their SWC media in DFW can try all they want to convince us all otherwise, but that program has been on life support for the better part of the last 25 years. Even after its last resuscitation made SMU look like they had something going again, the doctor who brought the patient back to life, by all intents and purposes, appears to believe himself that this patient cannot be brought back to anything close to what its SWC alumni believe it can be. And, to be honest with you, he's correct. That ol' grey mare ain't what she used to be--even from two years ago. I still won't be surprised at all to see SMU give up scholarship football one day in the near future when the AQs eventually breakaway. It will just be too tough for them to swallow what has finally happened to them. No amount of Doak Walker, Don Meredith, Eric Dickerson, or Craig James highlights will ever bring that program back to national prestige and prominence. That barn burned down decades ago--from the cash that was being illegally spent on their payroll.
