SMU doesn't put a burr in my side. I could care less if they choose to call us by our old name. They only do it out of fear. Truth is, there is nothing SMU can do to stop North Texas from becoming a more dominate college football program in the DFW area. This season, UNT was able to undo everything June Jones has done since he first set foot on the hill top. We produced more wins, better home attendance numbers, a more energized fan base, and won a bowl game at the Cotton Bowl in front of 35,000+ Mean Green fans. Beating SMU next season will be an acknowledgment of what many on this board all ready know... The North Texas football program has passed by SMU. Go Mean Green!!!5 points

With the new wrap technology, and apparent willingness of the AD to use something other than "North Texas" (for FOUR games!), I'd say the sky's the limit. Get our yer handbags and heels, ladies. Let the fashion talk begin! The runway is open for business!4 points

With the advent of Eugene Levy eagle the helmet stickers should be eyebrows. And I don't mean have a lot of little eyebrows all over the helmet, just that the more plays you make the larger that one pair of eyebrow stickers gets. One great ST play = Thin Greta Garbo eyebrows. 14 sack season = Full on Eugene Levy. The stickers should also actually be furry, we could be the trendsetters instead of Oregon!3 points

Strong was Patterson's hire. He's going about it the right way, which is to allow the boosters to give their money, but leave the final decision on hires to the AD. The boosters were the ones pushing Gruden--and really--Saban. Mora was looked at, but Briles was supposedly talked to, and was told he would have to interview like everyone else. Supposedly his response was something along the lines of: "I thought my 3 wins out of the last 4 against you guys was my interview." That didn't go over too well. Patterson wanted to make this hire, and he will sink or swim with it. It's the right course of action, but now the old money is being pushed into the sunset, and some of them don't like it. Total culture change from Patterson, and it needed to be done.3 points

This is why I loved the way the situation unfolded. Their first three picks, Saban, Briles and Mora, wouldn't even interview which half their alumni just couldn't understand how someone would turn down the opportunity to coach a UT. The arrogance of the whole situation was hilarious, just like their arrogance drove Arkansas from the SWC and A&M from the Big XII starting the downfall of both conferences. The arrogance makes it unappealing to many. The bad part to me is that they probably ended up with the best coach for their situation. Strong is an excellent coach and much different from Brown. I saw a quote where someone said he could see the end to the annual swimming party at Red's ranch. That's probably what pissed off McCombs the most. What an ass.3 points

I'm glad to see it. How often do we gripe about media only paying attention to the big 5 schools? I actually think it would have been funny if they got the #25 spot. Don't forget, they beat K State in Manhattan.3 points

Thanks...Cerebus, ITgreen01, and Got5onit. DD was massacred on this board and Scotties old board. DD did more with less, much like Hayden Fry. Everyone needs to re-read Cerebus and ITgreen01's account of this that DD when though. DD didn't call out loyal fans, but on message boards and in media if you say a non truth over and over again people believe it (case in point "if you like your health coverage and doctor you can keep them"). They are folks either to stupid or don't care to do the research to realize the truth about what a person a coach in this case really says. Man, I could go on a long time about the negative carpet bombing DD took. DD was a able to get Mattress Mac to donate $1,000,000,00 to UNT athletics. Mattress Mac also paid for Andrew Smith funeral and all the players expenses to funeral site I believe or whatever was allowable by NCAA. Mattress Mac hasn't been heard from since DD left UNT. DD lobbied hard for new stadium to be built. I still have original stadium concept video to prove it. DD was featured in video discussing UNT football success story and our need for facilities and stadium. I don't believe athletic village was even built when DD was here. I'd bet RV promised DD stadium couldn't come threw and DD probable used stadium to recruit and was pissed about RV's non delivery. At the end RV and DD I believe were at odds with each other. Yes, coach Flannigan was heckled by drunk fan in the stands and I believe fan was insulting players and much as him so he went in stands to defend himself/Players. Not acceptable....but really buy a ticket and heckle your own OC to the point that OC's mind just explodes!!! Really...nice behavior. In the old days people mainly men were allow to defend there honor. Not in the PC world we live in today. Coach Mac hasn't lost assistant coaching staff to other schools. DD lost great coaches to SEC and PAC12 to name a few. DD couldn't keep any good coach to save his life because athletic program didn't have enough money to pay assistance coaches reasonable salary. Plenty of HS coach made the same if not more than our assistant coaches when DD was here. DD always lost his assistance right after season with bowl game. Which meant he had to hire new position coach and put on final recruiting push. Then hope to God his assistant coach didn't turn around and recruit his players at his new school. Which happen on several occasions. DD never had any time to really search for new assistant. Bowl game in late December and recruiting wrapped up early Feb.. So, DD would go to national coaches conference where ever it was held, find a coach and beg him to work for what UNT was paying and tell coach raise would come once new stadium and FB team revenue would allow raise. DD's staff would go to smaller HS programs ie 2A, 3A, and 4A to look at guy's they thought could play D1 ball because all of the bigger Texas and nation power schools were picking off all the good 5A talented recruits. So, DD was bashed for not recruiting Dallas well. On what freaking budget!!! Coach Evan's was one hell of a recruiting coordinator!!! DD and all his assistance did a great job recruiting given their available resources!! DD was run out after gal bladder and hart attack. Coaches who don't care don't have health problems like the two I mentioned. 4-8 season came after we'd been in 4 bowl games, lost good coaches and recruits. UNT didn't have new facilities, stadium, or any money to help solve talent issues on field. DD was a causality of his own success. DD needed more time than he was given to turn UNT football back around. Fan's had tasted enough success not to be satisfied with what under paid coach, facilities and athletic budget could deliver!!!! If anyone mainly RV would have appreciated what DD had really done here we might have been spared the Dodge years!!! Nightmare!!! Coach Mac better thank his luck stars DD came before him and took a lot of arrows Coach Mac hopefully will never have to take. Good to see at least some giving a small amount of credit to DD because in my mind it's certainly way over due!!! Go Mean Green!!!3 points

There is no such thing as a "Bowl Ring" or at least there used not to be. It used to be that Conference Championship rings included the bowl in which they participated in. Example - Old Southwest Conference Championship with Cotton Bowl on one side, or the TCU Conference Championship incorparting the Rose Bowl on it. Most bowls used to give watches to all the players. Our guys voted on a watch over a ring. I advised my player to go for the watch. If you don't win the Conference/National Championship, you don't deserve a ring. It irks me to see High Schools that give out State "Finalist" Rings. That's what patches on letterman jackets are for.2 points

In no way trying to convince you to vote for FCS in FBS polls, but stringent academics? P'shaw. Maybe at Stanford, Duke, and Rice. Don't know who I was listening to on radio highlights this morning, but dude could barely string three words together. You can't convince me that the guy is a Rhodes Scholar. Hell, you can't convince me the guy can put together a simple five paragraph essay. Seems to me that it's the smaller programs (like UNT) where the student athletes pay attentions to BOTH words in that title. Get up in the semi-pros and they're getting academically coddled in manufactured online courses that a lab rat of below average cognitive ability could pass. I actually stand firm that I'd rather give my money to a program like UNT who produces the Derek Thompsons and Brandon McCoys, guys who take their education seriously, over giving it to a semi-pro team who sells t-shirts in Kroger.2 points

Just wondering if there is a chance they might have game day at Texas for our first game against their new coach next Year, Wouldn't that be something big for our program?2 points

I don't really care to look into the math of how that may impact the final BCS standings but I guess we can all be confident a top-60 finish (and a DMAC bonus) is a mere formality now.2 points

I wonder if anyone else has noticed, but a good portion of this has been A vs. B, B vs. C, C vs. D, then conclude that A beats D (notice I did not say greater or lesser than, because each segment argued different merits with one or the other winning a given set). Both teams had a decent year, didn't play each other, and we're happy with the results of ours so why continue arguing theirs, especially with such an odd form of argument? We're even in our series with Houston. Our University is not in a ghetto. We have a cool stadium and a coach that may return us to the prominence we had before many of us were born. Houston left to join the Bank of American Airlines 'Murican Conference of Merkins in America. In a 5-set round robin of all other FBS teams (i.e. everyone plays each other 5 times) we would probably be right around even after all 750-ish games if they could be consolidated into one season with the same players. But that isn't reasonable, so the current format will do for now. We lost to some less than stellar teams, which I suspect boils down to the fact that this is the year we're finally settling in after so many years of dismal results. Houston couldn't get over the hump against some of their better opponents, probably resulting from a move up in conference affiliation against considerable competition. We get another year with Mac and the boys, they get another year in the AAC/BVD/DVD/BoysIIMen Conference where some of the top dogs are leaving, so chances are both of us will have even better seasons next year. Time will tell, but really, it's all just babble since we don't play each other...for now.2 points

If we count the DaMN State Top 100 list, Dickey recruited: Booger Kennedy '99 Jonas Buckles '00 Jamario Thomas '03 Randy Gardner '99 Taylor Casey '99 Cody Spencer '00 There is a narrative that Dickey only recruited diamonds in the rough and only had one good class, but I never agreed with it.2 points

Why does anyone care what SMU fans think about UNT? Who the frig cares? The issue is with UNT fans who get so worked up over it all. It keeps giving the SMU folks cannon fodder and a reason to continue. Why? Because it gets under so many UNT fans skins and they react. Ignore it all. It does not matter one iota what SMU thinks or does not think, and has absolutely zero impact on UNT. Much much better things to do than obsess over SMU. Ignore them...it will go away, just like Cougar King and Froggy Style.2 points

I have been advocating this idea for a long time and even have an idea for a name for this round robin - The "Trinity Series", with the winner winning the Trinity Cup. With DART. DCTA and the TRE we even a have way for students and fans to attend many games on public transportation. I don't know why we have not been doing this for years as it would create rivalries and save on traveling expenses. IT WOULD BE FUN AND IT IS REALLY STUPID NOT TO DO IT.2 points

Absolutely. I made a comment sometime last year about special teams being an afterthought vs. actually being special...baby football Jesus delivered. Offense executed a bit better and defense was killer, but without this improved special teams play (not only in terms of the awesome returns and blocked kicks, but also the general play that helped with field position a few times when we really needed it), we may have had 1 or 2 less wins this season. If Perry really did light a fire under them and it wasn't just a result of similar practice on defense and offense (go after the ball, get the extra yards, pray that Brelan doesn't get hurt again), then we really need to hold onto him. On second thought, the whole coaching culture is probably what made everything click so well. You have to assume that Perry and Skladany tag-team in the discussion to go after the ball, etc. and reinforce one another (just one example of crossover). No matter the method, he's obviously working things together well and I feel kind of evil for hoping other programs don't notice.2 points

Thik about this for a moment. They claim that we outdraw them (even in a BAD year) because we have so many more students and alumni. An interesting argument made by a delusional fan base that forgets one thing...they've been to several bowl games lately and are DIRECTLY IN THE HEART OF A CITY WITH A MILLION PEOPLE. Now, tell me again why Ford is always 1/4 full?2 points

On offense Y'Barbo and Lemon will be some obvious leaders and likely captains, Y'Barbo for sure. Also Jimmerson has started to take on a more vocal role and more of a leadership role. He'll likely be one of two scholarship backs healthy in the spring and hopefully continues to grow as a leader of the running backs and the offense. On defense Akunne and Lee are the multi-year starters and seniors. Both will for sure be leaders but also James Jones. He was one of the more vocal guys on the defense this year and he can hopefully step into more of a leadership role this year.2 points

If you have to go back to 1959 to be offended, you're having to work at it. I'm guessing at that period of time it was probably a racial thing because UH hadn't integrated yet. But things have changed since then. If it's something else, I'd like to hear the story.2 points
