  1. For god sakes, end this before any more damage is done to this program. Show us you are serious about winning college basketball at UNT. This is YOUR responsibility. This is something that YOU will probably have to address. This was a terrible hire. But you knew that last April and didn't do one damn thing about it (talking to the BOR, here). You chose to let your AD blame players and crossed your fingers and wished for a miracle (if some of you even cared at all). Well, that hasn't worked. Time to step up and act like a major university in the State of Texas. Or do what you have always done, and watch more of us walk away from the basketball program. Every day this continues cost this program in attendance, recruiting, and future fans. Re-assign him. Now. There are plenty of Interm coaching options at the assistant level.

  2. That is the day where it became obvious that Benford had issues. While I was not calling for his firing until about 20 games into last season, the signs he was unfit for this job came early. It has only gotten worse. End it now RV.

  4. BTW - for anyone associated with the team reading this...we still support the guys. That's WHY we want the coach gone.

  5. Dajon Williams is the real deal. When it's all said and done he will go down as one of the best the Mean Green have ever seen. I think it's smart to bring on Greer, but he is a long shot to start if Dajon is healthy and ready to go this spring. Competition is always good...i expect it to between the two and maybe Bergland if he can get the reps. Anyone know the type of QB Greer is? Pocket passer? Dual threat?

  9. Forrest is just another Benford, but with "extra" degrees. A good recruiting assistant coach that should not be a head coach.

  10. In one of the Brown threads, someone raised the absurd notion that Texas would have beaten Alabama with Colt McCoy. Unless Colt was also going to play DT, MLB, or SS, it was evident that Alabama was going to have its way with Texas' defense that night. So, McCoy, had he stayed healthy, would have had a front row seat for the beating, but nothing more. I mentioned, as I always do about Saban, that he isn't in it to embarass the other team. Once his charges have a game under control, he calls church and puts in backups. In Dodge's game there with us, Saban had a backup QB in the game before halftime. In that regard, Saban is, as the numbers bear out, a wholly different type of coach than Mack Brown and his main Big 12 nemesis, Bob Stoops. We have faced all three. Brown's teams have hung 60+ on us; Stoops gave us the 79-10 beating of a lifetime. To think that Saban's Bama squads couldn't have also put 60- or 70+ on us is as much a fantasy as thinking Texas could have beat Alabama with Colt McCoy in the game. Many people don't like Nick Saban for one reason or another. I love him because he does what needs to be done to win consistently - run the ball, stop the run, and play well on special teams. He is not in the game to set offensive record, push kids for the Heisman Trophy, or settle scores with other coaches or programs. The man went out of this way to say nice things about our program when Todd Dodge was the coach. In short, he has class that most coaches will never have. Is he a hard ass? Probably. But, after hearing the same questions over and over again for decades, you'd get short with the press as well. But, to me, what his teams do on the field during games they obviously havea game in hand says more to me about him than whether some pencil neck geek in the front row is asking him stupid questions like why they didn't register any sacks against North Texas. Anyway, here are the numbers for Saban, Brown, and Stoops. I think it's evident from the number of national titles won that Saban's approach has been far better than Brown or Stoops - win the game, shut it down, get some young players some real game time, go home and prepare for next week. Saban, 18 seasons: 165-56-1 / 4 national titles 70+ points: 0 60+ points: 2 (.009% of all games coached, 1.2% of all wins) 50+ points: 15 (7% of all games coached, 9% of all wins) Brown, 30 seasons: 244-121-1 / 1 national title 70+ points: 1 60+ points: 14 (4% of all games coached, 6% of all wins) 50+ points: 53 (14% of all games coached, 22% of all wins) Stoops, 15 seasons: 159-39-0 / 1 national title 70+ points: 2 60+ points: 19 (9.5% of all games coached, 12% of all wins) 50+ points: 43 (22% of all games coached, 27% of all wins)

  11. Nor would it have happened had we hired the man that built the team that just whipped our ass on Sunday, Danny Kaspar. Not only is he an alumni but a letterman as well, who would have poured his heart and soul into this program. He took SFA to the dance, imagine what he could have done here? He wanted this job and had some huge references suggesting we hire him and it sounds like those references were ignored because I don't believe we ever contacted him? Rick

  13. The SFA HC just joined a long line of coaches that I think would have beat Benford badly with ether team.

  16. If the situation of one of them leaving doesn't happen then I bet they'd all have a chance to compete in the spring. Then the odd man/men out would be presented with the idea of a position change.

  18. With our entrance into C-USA, and all the work J. J. did for North Texas basketball, our home attendance numbers should be rising. Benford has not worked out. Losing to SFA isn't what really upsets me. They are a good program, and can steal a win here and there. It's how they were able to slap us around on our home court. Our attendance was weak already. This game will only make it worse. Conference play hasn't even started, and many in our fan base are ready to throw in the towel. Considering where this program was when J. J. left, no one thought things could get this bad this fast. I'm not interested in blaming anyone, I just want the situation addressed. I hope the administration does something soon.

  24. We would have probably lost Mitchell to the draft and maybe others if UNT hired Kaspar. Back then, that made me say 'absolutely not' to Kaspar. Hindsight being 20/20, I don't care who we would have lost, we made the wrong hire. We don't know how Kaspar would have done here, so I'm not saying he was the right hire, but I bet it would be better than what we are seeing now.

  25. It should be noted that both of Saban's 60+ point game came in one season, 2010. So, he's had one season out of 18 where his teams have put 60+ on another school. There really is no argument: Saban calls off the dog. He called off the dogs against Texas during that national title game five seasons ago. Hurrah to Texas for taking advantage of it. But, when Saban put the keys back in the car and started it, his charges went ahead and finished the job.

  26. Benford may turn out ok once he has 5 -10 years of head coaching experience to figure out what does and does not work. Division 2 and Division 3 are excellent places to gain this experience.

  27. It is obvious that NT is horrible, but they are really showed up by disciplined teams. See BYU, SFU and even a Northwood. NT has the athletics to play with a lot of teams, but not the teamwork to match anyone. Once they get behind by 10 or so they lose all team concepts and whoever gets the ball on offense usually plays one against the opponent ball. It is even more evident than last year, that Benford is not the man. This reported "us against the world" stance should be the last straw. All AD's make bad hires, but good ones correct their mistakes.

  28. So just about 1/4 of all games coached by Benford have been embarrassments for UNT and it's fans? Sounds about right. In a side note, it is good to know you are still paying attention. I was afraid this whole thing may have caused you to lose complete interest. That would be tragic.

  29. I really think we do too. Vaughn's looks good, Taylor looks good, Voss has looked capable, Gaines looks like he could do some things in close. But they don't look like a team. They just look like players. Across the board we might have just as much ability as we've had in the past 4 years. It's just not coming together and there's no freshmen now to even be building chemistry with for the future.

  30. The only way for this program to regain any respectability at this point would be to make an immediate coaching change. It might not salvage the season, but it would salvage our pride. We have to send a message that this type of performance is completely unacceptable. I know I'm not the first person to say this, but now I think it's obvious to all: each additional day that Benford is coaching this team sinks our program further into a hole from which the next coach will have to dig us out. I'm sure he's a decent guy and giving it his all, but for whatever reason, he isn't the right fit for this school at this time. I truly believe that we have some talented players who are ruining their careers by working with a coach whose system seems disorganized at best.

  32. This seems to have had a bit of direction towards me and Army of Dad didn't want it to get lost. You didn't like my info graphic? That's cool, I appreciate sarcasm. About the game, I also wanted to join the conversation to say a couple of things. First, I agree with the other poster commending Andrew... although minority in thought, he keeps it classy. Second, and more on point, though I didn't see any of the game (family Christmas), all that I saw on CBS.com and read through this long thread seems to point to an absolutely embarrassing game. Across all dimensions this game sucked and someone needs to be held accountable for it. I have defended Benford, but you can only defend a man so far. I am not a basketball aficionado, but I am not sure firing him mid-season would help any. I am torn. I think the only option RV has, at this point, is to let this season play out and make any moves then. (Do we get a lottery pick in college!?!) I am for Benford's redemption. I am for this team winning. I am for packing the pit. I am for healthy GMG board conversations. To that end, I am not sure how much productivity versus fodder these "fire benford" threads morph into. Regardless of coach or performance, I will not strike the Super Pit, I will be at every game I can because I believe in the Mean Green. Hope to see you there!

  33. RV will never admit it because his a$$ is in a sling for this hire, Dodge hire, first SB coach hire, Stephens hire, Peterson hire, now Benford hire. He is just hoping FB will buy him a reprieve for a few months.

  34. He'll be missed. I just wish we could have had more than 2 years with him.

  35. I disagree. Why is Coach Mac a better coach than Dodge? We've seen our share of recruiting aces on the basketball side as well, and seen how well that's worked out.

  36. “I told the guys it’s a long season and there no one in your corner now,” Benford said. “Everyone thinks that we are not any good, that I can’t coach and they can’t play. There is a lot of basketball left and it’s our job to prove people wrong.” Not so fast there, Kemosabe. I for one am in the players' corner 100%, and I suspect most of us are as well.

  38. After having season tickets for ages, did not renew this year. So this was the first men's game I have been to this year. First, got a late start and arrived about 5 minutes to tip off. Parked 3 slots from closest Fout parking place and there was absolutely no one in the ticket line. The actual attendance was less than 500 with at least 200 of them SFA supporters. I only mention this as proof this program has bottomed out already in terms of fan support. I am one who has thought at least that Benford's team may be better than last years disaster and wasn't as concerned as most about the BYU stomping. SFA is a good Southland team but they didn't have the advantage of altitude or home court that BYU did. They also don't have near the talent. Is there one player on SFA 's team that got one CUSA offer? I doubt it, but yet they completely embarrassed NT. Even scored the last 14 points of the game, at a time that their players were mostly from the end of their bench. No one played worth a damn for NT, and I usually do not single out players. However, Voss who garnered 2 points and 1 rebound in 25 minutes of play chose to take out his frustration on a skinny bench player of SFU, not appropriate. That player who just laughed at Voss, is a perfect example of what most now think of the current NT basketball program.

  43. It'd make sense that we'd be the home team in the HoD Bowl, but the NCAA doesn't always make sense. So, before I buy my tickets, I was wondering which side we'd be on. Stubhub has us on the visiting sidelines (50yd line section 24) but the Heart of Dallas site lists us second like you'd see for a home team putting us on the Home side (50 yd line section 6) Thanks in Advance and GMG

  46. We are the home team but ESPN wants us on the visiting sideline because they will be filming from the home side. We will likely be bringing a lot more fans than UNLV. It will make the stadium look more full as the visiting sideline will be in most of the shots.
