  1. You're right, that is a scary pic. You look like a thinner Randy Quaid in some new Christmas Vacation movie.

  3. Let's take a look, shall we? Stole two cases of beer that night to get drunk on- Theft Killed four people while DWI- 4 counts intox manslaughter Ran over several others- 2 counts intox assault Fled the scene- Failure to stop and render aid Fled from police- Evading arrest But prison is for people who are a danger to society, right? The gang bangers and such, right? Because I can tell you, with absolute certainty, I've never worked or heard of an instance where an inner-city thug killed four, paralyzed another, put one more in a coma and maimed three more just for good measure. But this is just drunk driving. What's that we always read on this board, "Who among us HASN'T had one too many?" Bullshit. Plain and simple.

  12. Seems to me that Coach McCarney has his mentor, ie, Hayden Fry almost at sainthood status. After all, he has a framed photo of his hero on his Athletic Dept. office wall over-looking Apogee Stadium. No, Fry was not perfect and we all know that---and from every era, too. He was HFC when I was a UNT student so much of my feelings are probably more of a nostalgic nature than anything. That will happen to you younger alums in time, too, mark it. Anti-Fry With This: I have posted couple times thru the years that myself and others were not always on board with his playing Big School U at Texas Stadium rather than using his fund-raising skills and Dallas connections to actually get us a better campus stadium built. He chose not to go that direction. Again, the times were so different back then with a Southwest Conference always hovering over us like a dark, dark cloud that would rain on us if they ever thought we'd start a Mean Green parade. Honestly? We never had a snow balls chance for SWC membership and some of his detractors said that Fry did all that for the personal publicity. Fry would disagree. Why does it matter now? Yes, Fry had 5 of his 6 Mean Green teams which would have been bowl elgible today but not one received an invite from any of the (I believe) 10 or so bowl games back then. Fry had a plan for a school of about 17K in a town of about 39,000 and a Denton County which Texas Almanac said "is a rural county of 99,000" population. So yes, Fry (in deed) had his work cut out for himself and his athletic program with those kind of constituency numbers for sure. Fry's biggest success took place where he had a much bigger audience of fans who would appreciate what his talents truly were. That's all I will say about that. Was Fry perfect though? Hardly not, but I go back to my North Texas student days and still have good feelings when I think about many of the games he coached at North Texas. As another fellow alum of ours always said: "When you went into a Big School U game with Coach Fry in charge you just always thought you had a chance." I'm beginning to feel the same with Dan McCarney at the helm, but I will for sure not mention where he received his coaching apprenticeship, either. Wouldn't be prudent. BEAT UNLV ON NEW YEARS DAY !

  13. 1.) UNT earning this bowl bid in this game is the best opportunity UNT has had in decades--since Fry roamed the sidelines. To play in the Cotton Bowl on New Years Day, no matter the opponent, especially while SMU and TCU are at home, is found gold. Best thing that we can do is win this game, preferably in a big way. That said, I think this will be a close game. Obviously, we haven't played well after a break, so I worry that UNLV may have a big advantage here, maybe even one that means that the difference in winning and losing this game. 2.) UNLV, while a recognizable name because of basketball, won't bring many fans, nor will it make many Metroplex residents shake off their NYE hangovers to go to Fair Park that NYD morning. Reported attendance will probably be around 30k, which will make us look like nobody showed up in the cavernous Cotton Bowl. This will lead to attendance getting overblown by the local SWC media--they'll use it as more propagnada that we don't belong in FBS and that surely SMU or TCU would've brought a bigger crowd. That will be a load of $hit...TCUor SMU wouldn't bring anyone to this game in any bigger number than this for UNLV. Our friends in FW like to talk about the number of Frogs that were in Pasadena or in Tempe a few years ago, but those were BCS bowl games. Any venture as to how those stadiums of the Poinsettia Bowl looked when TCU made it? Empty. Guess who would have giant numbers if they got to go to one of those games? Almost everyone, including us. SMU doesn't even deserve to be included in an attendance thread, so I won't even waste my time with them. 3.) Dan McCarney has done everything that we asked him to do--rebuild us up from being a laughing stock, make us more repsonsible in the classroom and on the field (no more stupid penalties), and turn us into a winner by Year 3 of his tenure. He deserves a nice extension and raise. He may be vanilla with his gameplan, but he is showing us that it works when he has the right pieces in place that have been developed in his system. And right now, he looks like a huge value compared to June Jones. And if Gary Patterson continues to make TCU look like they made a mistake in moving up to the Big XII by not being able to win against that higher level of competition, Mac will look like an even bigger value to us. 4.) Enjoy the game on TV, Ponies and Frogs!!

  14. http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/24370317/heart-of-dallas-bowl-preview-predictions-tv-info What matters: In a battle of two teams you might have thought you'd never see in a New Year's Day bowl it's North Texas (one bowl win in its history) against UNLV (first winning season since 2000). A win would help UNT match its best finish since 1978, and would also hand Dan McCarney the third bowl win of his career (2000 and 2004 while at Iowa State). The Cotton Bowl is less than 50 miles from the University of North Texas campus. UNLV would match its best season since 1984 with a victory, and would move the school to 4-0 all-time in its limited bowl history.

  16. Who gives a "F"? They are both GREAT players for NT. It's a group of peoples opinion. How many of you broke down every game that a CUSA team played in? I bet the answer is ZERO. How many of you have read the grades for each game of any of the teams? Again, I'll bet the answer is ZERO. All-Conference honors are nice things to put in a biography, but don't mean shit about how good of a football player you are.

  17. Of course he reads GMG. Brett's a good reporter. Good reporters use every asset that is available to get info. As a police officer, I'm sure you've used or know some one that has used a confidential informant. That's doing the job. Same thing. And he post on this board under his name. Just links to his stories, but I'm sure he reads the other board and all the NT blogs as well.

  20. If UNT is going to win this game, they had better improve the defensive secondary, have a pass rush and please, keep the offensive pedal to the metal...no damn conservative play or they will loose to a team that puts a lot fo points on the board...just hope DT plays a great game...and please, no 4 yrd passes when it is 3rd down and 6 yds are needed...don't take this team lightly...like UTSA was. 21. He beat SMU(5-7), SFA(3-9), Texas State(6-6), and Kansas(3-9). He lost to Baylor(11-1), Kansas State(7-5), and Texas(8-4). He had Tech in a tie with TCU(4-8) when Davis Webb came in and won the game. He hasn't exactly beaten the top of the big 12(minus 2). He beat teams with a combined 17-31 record and lost to every team he played with a winning record. I think Dajon or Berglund would be a better option. I think McNutlty would be a tossup.

  23. He is a danger to society and his parents will have him out and about in no time to let him prove it. The picture their high dollar attorney painted, which stretched to the point that basically claims he's the victim here, was a complete fabrication. I like the part where it claims he had no friends. I guess his brother and six others riding around with him that night just happened to jump on board by chance? Rick

  34. So let me get this straight... ESPN now produces and manages the HOD Bowl. They had the largest say in who our opponent would be, and now they don't like the matchup that they selected, and call it the worst bowl? And people on this board can't understand why some of us are upset. I know there is nothing we can do to change the situation, but I can at least say that I don't like the situation. So those of you that want to tell people like me to shut up, can save your time. Believe me, everyone that doesn't like this matchup has heard your angry demands for conformity loud and clear.

  38. No one wanted to play us, just like no one wanted to play UNLV. This is what happens when these two teams meet. Put a lot of butts in the seats and win January 1st. Then put a lot of butts in the seats and win next year as well. Keep rinsing and repeating, and we will climb out of the hole I have no doubt. But we have to start somewhere, and be realistic about it.

  39. This is what happens when you have a team that hasn't been in a bowl since 2004 playing a team who hasn't made one since 2000! I'm beyond excited for the game, but to the average sports fan this game is nothing more than a "meh..."

  40. Who cares what SI says? Didn't know they even knew there were more than the BCS bowls as it is but.... .... the HOD is the only bowl game I'm really interested in seeing (in person) since most of us on this board are going to spend $75 a ticket to go watch our school's team kick some butt I'm biased, but I think we have a very fun & interesting team to watch especially when all cylinders are running. We hope America gets up on New Years Day and gets to see that team. I stopped subscribing to S.I. long ago--they're irrevelant in my day in and day out sports world as it is. I'd rather read the Farmers Almanac. GMG! When Boise Was Bozo! When Boise first started going to bowl games they received similar treatment from the national media. The sports media court jestors most always want to devaluate newbie bowl teams to clown status, but I don't think any of the S.I. staff writers have seen our school's football team, especially that Mean Green D, now have they? ? Can't recall any of Boise State's first few bowl games ever being on New Years Day, though. Then they had several winning seasons in a row, annual Top 25 ranked football teams (even while losing one HFC after another) then they beat OU in that most exciting Fiesta Bowl and the rest is history for a school that would then finally get the attention of the S.I crowd & national media in a most positive way. We have 1 winning season in almost a decade, so I don't think any of us could really expect the national media to genuflect in our direction.........yet. ? ADDENDUM: Just like Syracuse, Boston College and PItt showed a definite interest in coming down here to play a CUSA team in the HOD Bowl game, would SMU & TCU gladly change places with North Texas right now?

  41. I was pretty hands off with Benford last year, because I just think there could have been numerous factors working against him, new head coach, new system, players loyal to JJ, players hoping Forest would've been hired, etc.., but this year is bringing my worst fears to the surface. I think Benford is one of those career assistants that every program needs because they are great recruiters. He obviously connects with his players, appears to be a pretty nice guy, but just isn't cut out to be the head coach. Good recruiters/assistants are the one's that really connect with the players and develop a relationship with them. Many times, their personalities tend to be along the lines of a "people pleaser" and they work hard to make everything right and avoid conflict. Playing for your best friend seems like a great deal because you know what you can get away with and don't always have to give your best effort, and your best friend may be hesitant to get in your face because they don't want to ruin a relationship. They want you to like them. This is great as a lead recruiter or an assistant, because, as a player, this is the person you can turn to when you need someone to listen, etc... Many highly successful head coaches have to have the ability to motivate their players and sometimes that means pushing a player to the point that the player doesn't like the coach. These coaches don't care if the player likes them, they want them to but it doesn't effect their job performance, because they will do what it takes to get the most out of a player. People pleasers have a difficult time kicking a player in the butt if it is needed. I was honestly scared of the best coach I ever played for. I was scared to disappoint him, scared to not do my best, scared to the point that I practiced with a 102 degree fever because I didn't want to tell him I didn't feel good. I grew to love this coach and respected him than any other coach I ever played for, but it took time. He appeared to honestly not care if we liked him or not at the time, because he utilized every means to make us successful, which his teams always were. I think Coach Mac is a great example of this personality. I think every player in that locker room respects Coach Mac and Coach Mac likes them, but you have to earn his respect by doing things the right way, not cutting corners, being good on the field and off, etc... If you can't become the player/person he envisions because you aren't willing to make that sacrifice, then you will be replaced. It doesn't mean he doesn't like you, but you didn't earn his respect. These are the coaches you will run through a brick wall for, because your respect for them instills a fear or attitude in you that you will do everything to never disappoint them. I don't know if Benford has that in him or not. He will recruit and sign great talent because he knows how to connect with his players and build a relationship immediately. He is good at becoming their best friend, the person that is always telling them how good they are and how great they can become, but can he flip that switch and kick their ass when needed? I think Vic Trilli was this way and Benford could be also. Neither seemed to be cut of the cloth of a Coach K, Roy Williams, Rick Majerus, Jim Boeheim, etc... that will never hestitate to get in a player's face when it is necessary. Hope I am wrong, and this is all speculation on my part, but this could be an issue. Just an opinion from a middle aged white guy with limited basketball skills.

  43. Didnt read the article but from the comments it appears to be more of the same. Its just evidence of why so many of us were underwhelmed by the UNLV choice. Truth be told the UNLV vs North Texas match up has little appeal to anyone outside the respective schools fan bases. And lets's face it, neither one of your bases is all that large. At least with a Big 10 team or 'Cuse you could hope some of their fans would travel to the game in hopes of good Dallas weather and a respite from their winters. UNLV draws flies to their home games, and not many (if any) of their fans are going to travel from desert of Nevada to Texas because of warmer weather.

Because this year has been amazing and we should be getting some recognition! Still our basketball team is much better know then the football even with their success this year. Next year we need to push this bowl win big time!
