  1. I haven't read all of the posts on here... So I am sure that other Positive Pete's or Penelope's have already posted something similar..... AS HAVE ALL OF THE NEGATIVE POSTERS. SO in the interest of keeping things balanced....... I know that a lot of you fools are upset about not going up against Michigan and getting our butts kicked in our bowl game. I understand. It would have been good publicity. IT STILL WILL BE. There are SOOO MANY new fans. People want something to be excited about. People like an underdog, Cinderella story (Rocky, Frodo Baggins, Obama, Rudy, etc). I can not tell you how many people who have approached ME (when I have not be looking for it) about how amazing this program is doing. EXAMPLE- While we were in Tulsa, our friends who we were staying with in BFE, OK wanted to detour to pick a Christmas present up in Stillwater. As we were at the guys house loading the Ping Pong Table into the back of the truck he noticed our sweatshirts and immeadiately started commenting on how he was rooting for us against Tulsa and spent another 20 minutes explaining to us ( and name dropping our players) how much better he thought that we were than UTSA (which he pulled highlights on AFTER the Tulsa game). He didn't strike me as the social kind either. People are getting excited about North Texas football. NON- Alumni are starting to by their kids $30 NT hoodies. Good things....... We can't expect to "expect" to go 4- 8 at a beginning of a season, reach a bowl after 8 seasons then have instant respect from major programs. Silly to expect it, too. UNLV may be JUST what we need. LOCAL publicity in the HOD, GOOD RECRUITS that want to play at some point in their college careers and a team that we CAN DESTROY on ESPN. I am unclear on what it is that some of you all want. I have family and money invested. SO- I want HUGE things, too. But, I have realistic expectations pending the circumstances. The IMPORTANT thing to realize is that WE HIT OUR GOALS this year. Bi&^%&^%ing serves no purpose. We are heading in the right direction. And we will continue to. There is NOTHING that suggests otherwise. SEE YOU ALL AT THE COTTON BOWL! GMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh..... And think about our players who read this forum.... BEFORE you post vomit.

  3. Watching this trash of a cowboys game makes me realize how fortunate UNT is to have a defense that can stop people.. UNLV better be ready for the likes of THE MEAN GREEN DEFENSE

  4. I don't care what Bowl we're in, or who the opponent is! This game is like Christmas Morning in Heaven to me! My fraternity put together a group of 70 people, all of whom bought their tickets today in the same section. And yes, at $75 a pop, EVERYONE will be going inside the game. Additionally out of the 72 people I texted (not included in the group of 70), I received 11 maybes and 42 yes's regarding their attendance! I am always the first one to get my hopes way too high, but I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised in every aspect of this bowl game, and I can't freaking wait! GMG

  6. Point in fact: 1. The HOD payout at 2,200,000 is tied with the LV Bowl an has a better payout than 12 other bowls. 2. There is little travel expense for the team. 3. Home cooking and practice as the team gets prepared. It's nearly a home game. 4. Lots of local press in UNT's prime recruiting area. 5. It's a short journey for the Mean Green Nation as McCarney parts the waters of Lake Lewisville an leads them to the promised land.

  10. SSP I am not blaming anyone at NT for us playing UNLV. It's just bad luck. I also saw Michigan play this year. I saw them have to comeback to beat Akron by 4, I saw them have to score 10 points late in 4th to sneak by uconn, i saw them let 5 win indiana score half a hundred on them. I think we would have given them a hell of a game and had a real chance to beat them and make a huge splash among out alumni. Having to play UNLV is fine, they will a tough matchup for us. I will be there, I will bring as many people as possible, and I will have fun cheering on the Mean Green.

  12. Let's take a closer look at the stats between the two teams... Offensive Stats: North Texas: 411.6 yds/gm = 68th nationally 227.6 pass yds/gm = 68th nationally 184 rush yds/gm = 47th nationally 31.5 pts/gm = 50th nationally UNLV: 423.8 yds/gm = 56th nationally 242.4 pass yds/gm = 51st nationally 181.4 rush yds/gm = 52nd nationally 31.3 pts/gm = 53rd nationally Pretty even matchup here, with a slight edge to UNLV, especially in the passing game, which is cause for concern with our defense. Defensive Stats: North Texas: 18.1 pts/gm = 9th nationally 355.5 yds/gm = 27th nationally 230.4 pass yds/gm = 64th nationally 125.1 rush yds/gm = 18th nationally UNLV: 31.5 pts/gm = 93rd nationally 436.3 yds/gm = 100th nationally 214.5 pass yds/gm = 32nd nationally 221.8 rush yds/gm = 110th nationally UNLV has a slightly better pass defense, but the Mean Green defense pretty much blows them out in all other categories. Anyone else think Byrd & Jimmerson are licking their chops to get at this leaky UNLV rush defense? Yikes! Special Teams Stats: North Texas: Kick Returns: 23.94 yds/kick = 19th nationally (1 TD) Punt Returns: 14.7 yds/kick = 6th nationally (4 TD) Kick Return DEF: 20.95 yds/kick = 57th nationally (0 TD) Punt Return DEF: 6.74 yds/kick = 41st nationally (0 TD) FG%: 66.7% (Z. Paul: 10/15 - 48yd long) UNLV: Kick Returns: 22.7 yds/kick = 40th nationally (0 TD) Punt Returns: 3.64 yds/kick = 114th nationaly (0 TD) Kick Return DEF: 22.02 yds/kick = 82nd nationally (1 TD) Punt Return DEF: 9.81 yds/kick = 90th nationally (1 TD) FG%: 55.6% (N. Kohorst: 10/18 - 50 yd long) I think the numbers speak for themselves here... very loudly. Brelan should be looking forward to this matchup very much. UNLV Special Teams is certainly a weak spot. Intangibles: UNT: Turnover Margin: +10 (32 gained / 22 lost) = 15th nationally Penalties: 6.33/gm = 88th nationally Record VS bowl-bound teams: 3-3 (Wins over Ball St., MT, & Rice. Losses to Ohio, GA & Tulane) UNLV: Turnover Margin: +6 (19 gained / 13 lost) = 29th nationally Penalties: 3.58/gm = 4th nationally Record VS bowl-bound teams: 1-3 (Win over SDSU. Losses to Fresno St., SJSU, & UT St.) Both teams in the black in TOs and UNLV is very disciplined in penalties per game. UNT plays better against good teams.

  13. most folks on this board are "baseball first" people However, I agree with you. We should finish up the cash cow, football, first. An indoor facility should be high on RV's to-do list

  14. They have 10,000 seats. That block of seats is on the East Side, which is why you cannot buy those seats on the HOD website. They want us on that side for TV since they expect us to bring more of the fans. Doesn't necessarily mean we are the visiting team. Tickets should arrive by the 20th FedEx. Seats assigned by MGC priority points working from the 50 yard line out. Didn't know exact sections but looking at the map i'd say that's sections 21-27. Go mean green!

  15. My wife (a coach's wife unfortunately for her) has to sit in the stands and listen to parents talk down about my coaching style (choices, decisions, playing time, etc.) she has to have tough skin every game. I commend her and praise her after each and every game. That is just MS ball. I can't imagine what some of these college parents and coache's wives go through. God bless our family.

  16. this is a prime of example of why fanboards should be for fans, not friends or relatives... it takes tough skin to read some things, even when some things aren't meant as criticism... outsiders looking in should see this as a group of drunk fans talking around a campfire... and nothing else... because it means about as much...

  17. AND SOME OF US need to smile once in awhile. ESPECIALLY, those of us that have spent half the damn season bitching about how everything about our program sucks. Theres a time for that and as we PROCEED INTO THE BOWL THAT EVERYONE WANTED ISN'T ONE OF THEM. And I would never question YOUR fandom, 90. I didn't go to an away game without seeing you this year. In my book, your opinion weighs more than most of the people on here that post BS and haven't attended a game all year.

  18. For our players that read this board... I believe in you, and I believe you could have given a BIG 10 or ACC team more then they wanted. Sorry you won't get that chance. Congratulations on a great season. I can't wait to watch y'all fight the Rebels on New Years Day at the HOD. Go Mean Green!!!

  19. I don't think UM, Iowa, or any lower rung B10 team would've "kicked" our butts.
    3 points
  20. Thanks for getting my point. Doesn't seem that difficult to grasp. I'm sorry if some people were scared of playing a middle of the pack B10 team, but this team could have beaten one of those teams. Take Michigan for example, come from behind win to beat Akron by 4, had to score ten points in the 4th to slip by uconn, let Indiana score half a hundred on them. And after a 7 win season they go take on a seven win KSU, which we gave hell to when they had a Heisman candidate. If we beat UNLV, we will get some good local press. If we lose, people will roll theirs eyes at us. Just playing a B10 team in a bowl game would have created more buzz and beating a Michigan or Iowa (in front of 20k+ of their fans) would have been a program changer. I LOVE GOING TO THE HOD BOWL! I'LL BRING AS MANY PEOPLE AS I CAN. I JUST WISH WE GOT A B10 OPPONENT LIKE CUSA HOUSTON DID IN 2010.

  23. Harry, You have any thoughts about doing a Bowl Pick 'em? Like, list all the bowls and see who can predict the most winners? I think it would be well-received by the masses. And being the man of the people that I know you are, this would bring you great pleasure. Would anyone be up for this?

  25. ESPN Radio gave a SportsCenter update yesterday morning while I was going to the gym. Landry Locker said "bowls with a local interest" and proceeded to name every TX School in a bowl except UNT & HoD Bowl. I took to Twitter to let him know of his #fail, he laughed & apologized for wearing Big 12 goggles. What do you know...couple hours later on my way into the office I heard the same list of bowls but this time "North Texas vs UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl". I had a Twitter account for a couple of years and would never tweet, had 20 followers, and only used it as a source. This season, I revamped it around my Halloween costume, which I will also be donning at the Cotton Bowl, and love the connection it brings with players, coaches, and other fans. By putting just a little bit of effort into it, I have increased followers to 350+. It can be a powerful tool, as was demonstrated to me by my ability to get North Texas a mention on ESPN radio. I will continue to do all I can, because we need it. For the UTSA game, I bought the only two remaining front row seats in the endzone, section 113. I was so pleased that it had filled up that much already. However, when I showed up to my seats, it was orange to the left and right. Our senior day crowd was disheartening. Our Cotton Bowl crowd must make up for that. #MGBowlBound #Hit9 #PackTheCottonBowl #GreenOutBigD #GoMeanGreen #HeartofUNT Keep in my, the whole point of # is to be searchable, clickable. You can find other Mean Green fans easily that way. For example, I would guess UNTflyer is Flash Jordan on Twitter.

  27. To quote Vito as of a few days ago when I wrote about it: "McCarney is paid a base salary of $475,000 under the terms of his current deal. He also receives a $35,000 payment at the completion of each season and a $35,000 stipend for appearing on UNT’s radio and television programs." I'd bet that there are bonuses in his contract for things like 1. Going undefeated in the regular season 2. Winning a conference championship 3. Going to a bowl game 4. Winning a bowl game 5. Winning a body bag game 6. Going undefeated at home 7. Winning a Grey Goose shots contest on Fry St. etc.

  29. What exactly makes you think that we don't know that? MOST on here that is family has heard someone say something crappy about their player.... Some of us have heard it before they even graduate from HS. AND why is it that FAMILY automatically make opinions invalid? Does an alumni who comments from afar while watching from a TV and computer mean more than someone who FOLLOWS THIS program rather than the completely different one of 2- 10 years ago....? Some of you are ridiculous.

  30. Amen, & I'll take it a step further: I believe you could have won the Heart of Dallas Bowl against ANY of the teams that were being tossed around as your opponents. It just so happens to be UNLV. Prepare well, ace your exams, & we'll see you on Jan 1. Go Mean Green!

  34. SSP you are missing a few things. 1) We would have hung and had a real chance to beat those kid tier B10 programs, they wouldn't have "kicked our butts." 2) We match up better with some of those B10 teams that we do with UNLV, who reminds me of UTSA, and we know how that went. 3) Lack of respect had nothing to do with a B10 team not coming here, they didn't have enough bowl eligible teams, and other bigger programs like BC lobbied hard to get into the HoD. None of that means that people aren't ecstatic to be in a bowl game.

  35. Going to any bowl game is a godsend for this program. No one is arguing that and I'm excited as a little kid on Christmas to cut my New Years drinking short and be pre-gaming for a bowl game on New Year's Day at the cotton bowl.... But to act like the circumstances that led to our matchup in the HOD bowl not including a higher profile opponent than UNLV, during a season when we're the only local bowl team in north Texas, is just silly. Call it a wrinkled $100 Bill argument if you want, but our form of legal tender was unluckily wrinkled however you slice it.

  39. You wont convert a person that cares about matchups to become a fan. They will do the same during the season. You just have to find a true football fan. If you have to convince a unt alum, then give up on them ever becoming a die hard unt fan. They will only come around in certain situations. All unt alums should be hype right about now. Even if they cannot make it to the game, at minimum, they should have on unt gear and watch the game on TV. If they are not even watching the game, then concentrate on new fans.

  40. I think your argument is being mis-understood greatly. I understand what you're saying, and I agree. But it's best to just back away... that's what I do.

  41. Because we were invited to a bowl game whose host for the four year contract was a B10 team? Because the bowl had always gotten a B10 team before? Because a B10 team had played a CUSA team previously in this bowl? Because until NIU lost and MSU kept winning all the forecasts had a B10 team here? Because even despite placing two teams in AQ bowls if Sandusky had kept his hands to himself Penn St would have been eligible and we would have had a B10 opponent this year? Any of those really. EDIT: Also, stop living in a porcelain tower. WE won't care if Zach Orr is hitting the UNLV QB instead of Iowa, but those couple hundred thousand alumns that don't follow Mean Green football, BECAUSE THE UNIVERSITY IGNORED ATHLETICS FOR SO LONG, will care. This is a great team, I am not sure what they deserve, but they do deserve better than what has shown up to see them, but that is a moot point. This University for decades ignored athletics and I am frankly amazed 20k people showed up this year with our past history.

  42. Posted this in the recruiting forum Here's an article on backcounting. According to this, we can sign 27 this year, we just might not have 27 open scholarships. It's how Georgia was able to sign 33 last year. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/01/sec_learning_to_live_with_new.html I didn't think Blake Macek would be included in the signing class, I thought he just counted towards the 85 total scholarship players. Pretty sure putting walkons on scholarship doesn't count towards the signing class. I counted that we have 17 scholarship seniors and I counted 77 scholarship players currently on the team (after Cody Nelson has quit). That would be 25 open scholarships for next season, and that's before this season even ends. Some guys will most likely quit (injury or non-football related) or transfer out. We should be able to sign 27, at least 25.

  45. Dude, the people complaining here...it's amazing. We complained about the coaching - a new one was hired We complained about the stadium - a new one was delivered We complained about attendance - a new record was set We complained about parking and walking - a bridge over the freaking highway was built We complained about tailgating - a nice hill and alumni center were provided We complained about uniforms - they were changed back to Green, and this year we had TWO additional special uniforms, a throwback and a black We complained about the wide receivers' playmaking ability beyond Brelan Chancellor - the receivers stepped it up We complained about the size and depth of the defensive line - the defensive line stepped it up We complained about the quarterbacking - the quarterback broke almost every I-A/FBS passing record in the school's record book Now, we are going bowl for the first time in nine years...and, all people want to do is complain about the opponent? Good grief! As I've said before, it would surprise me 0% if either McCarney or Villareal left this place. Rick, who I openly criticized in the past, just as much as everyone else, has more than answered the bell. And, so have McCarney. Both have far exceeded anything I ever dreamed of for this program. And, look, sue me for not dreaming of us being national title contenders yet. What I wanted was better facilities, better coaching, and a competitive mid-major program. We now have all that. The bounty will increase in time. But, for pete's sake, just be happy right now for what we have! I mean, we are in a New Year's Day bowl game, for crying out loud! (It was hard for me not to cuss while typing this...but, I'm starting my New Year's resolution to cuss less early.)
