  1. Mac deserves an extension that would make his contract at a minimum 5 years.

  2. If we don't have the money to do both, we shouldn't be involved in NCAA athletics at the highest level. Come on, guys.

  3. Don't sweat it. There will be a new one tomorrow. And, the day after. And, the day after. What you won't get is questions about why the defense allowed UTSA to convert 14 of 20 third downs. I suppose if McCarney had been thinking straight, he would have put Derek in at middle linebacker on third down.

  6. I was watching a tape of last year's game on espnu , and the play by play announcer was Clay Matvick. I found him on twitter and asked him If he was doing this year's game, and he stated yes he was.

  7. Yeah, I already let this wound close and it is beginning to heal via bowl game talk. Would rather not play the "what if" game anymore.

  8. Actually they can serve at 17. Still a child. Still don't deserve to have awful things written about them on a fan board by miserable old men who want to live vicariously through them.

  9. The point of it is to show them we're serious about wanting them to stay. They could get offers, but won't go looking for them if they think they're in a good spot. I'm curious as to what you would propose as an alternative. Mac only has 2 years left...he could leave as can any coach if they're good enough, but no extension tells recruits that if they redshirt, they may only get a year under him because we don't believe in the job he's done to give him more time until right before the contract expires. And it tells Mac that instead of waiting for an offer, he might as well start sniffing around for one because a turnaround job with the first winning season and bowl berth in about a decade isn't worth an extension to try to entice him to stick around.

  11. /thread. Keeping Mac at 5 years shows the world that UNT is attaining big boy program status and shows commitment to staff, donors, and potential recruits, as well as a commitment to Mac.

  13. If they don't pan out then it was a wasted scholarship! Is there a better way to put that? Now, please post for me when I put down a 17 year old child. (minus the exaggeration). Over the past 2 years, men's basketball has released 2-3 kids. Maybe because they didn't think they could help the program. Larry Brown (SMU) dismissed half of the kids he inherited. Welcome to college athletics and sports message boards. I'm not into the star system like many but don't these sites (Rivals and others) assess stars on kids as early as their soph. year? That would make them even younger children. Aren't they saying that the no stars and 2 stars aren't as good? Haven't I read on here, from those in the know, that the bigger programs shy away from these kids. Or, only recruit 3-5 stars prospects? Green92, criticism of these so called children start long before I pay to see them.

  17. We could just as easily lost more games as we could have won more. For where we've been 8-4 is a fantastic accomplishment.

  18. We were not good enough. Period. One game, is understandable (Tulane)...but two. It just means we are not there yet. We are what our record says we are. A good 8-4 team. Like someone posted before... We could also have been 6-6. We split our close games 2-2 and that got us to 8-4. Another look at it...the way the bowl discussions are going, good thing we hit 8 instead of just 6 or 7.

  22. Barking Carnival did an analysis of all the coaching performances of the last 8 years. Danny Mac's was very impressive considering the talent level (according to Rivals and Scout) he had compared to the rest of the conference, nation. It was one of the more impressive coaching performances this season. Compared to Dodge (obvi) he was amazing. http://www.barkingcarnival.com/2013/11/27/5147044/find-a-coach-by-the-numbers-part-ii Recommend you read that, download the data and take a look. Got a post in the works about McCarney but you can glean all that I will say just by looking at this.

  25. At least a 2-year extension will ensure this coming year's recruits that he will be here for their tenure (3 years if they will redshirt). It's realistic to do this when times are good. Have a couple of down seasons, tell him to get the ball rolling again to ensure another extension. Seems reasonable on both ends. I can also think of at least 2 assistants that could use a nice little something to make sure they don't cut and run if offered.

  27. This season has been awesome...winning again is great, and I appreciate all Mac has done, but it seems like a lot of people are jumping the gun here. I'm all for a 1-2 year extension but see no purpose in locking ourselves down long term. Looking at things objectively, this was a very weak CUSA this year. We beat a fantastic Ball State team, but were painfully flat against Ohio, Tulane, and UTSA. Played our hearts out against Georgia. I felt the same way about the term of Johnny Jones' contracts even during the successful years. Before we give the guy a long term extension, it just seems like it should be after more than 1 winning season.

  28. 3 year extension to make it 5 total years ... sounds fair to me.

  29. I tend to agree. We all love what's happened this season but to get a major raise and extension I really think we have to see more than one 8 win season and a bowl appearance.

  31. You want a franchise that falls in love with and over-valued players past their prime, there is one that is literally down the street from The Ballpark that is just what you are looking for. Churning the roster, concentrate on pitching, and getting younger and better bats is what this team needs to do. and they sare doing it. It does suck for the kiddos. 2 of their fan favorites gone in a couple of years.

  32. You are right. However, bottom line is UNT will out draw Rice in attendance by a large margin. If HOD is in the business of making revenue, which they are, then no amount of lobbying should dissuade them from picking UNT over Rice.

  33. DC had an earthquake. Must have been all the fracking. The Ring of Fire was created by fracking. Fracking causes tsunamis too. Winter storm hitting the North Texas area Friday, fracking. Our lack of showing up to play UTSA, you guessed it. Fracking. That crap is an eye sore too.

  34. MUCH prefer the HOD for several reasons. 1)Many people will have New Year's day off so a Dec 30 date would effect attendance compared to Jan 1. 2)I've always wanted to see my school play a game in the Cotton Bowl. Don't know why, it's just really cool to me. 3)Amon Carter is nice but it just seems more prestigious to be in the Cotton Bowl than in TCU's stadium. 4)DART runs straight to the gates of Fair Park. So much better for anyone who wanted to have an early morning tailgate off-site. Also, the potential for a party at a Dallas hotel and then a train ride down in the morning is far superior. 5)We beat Rice!!! Let them play somewhere else. Another thing to consider, last year Rice played Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl. That bowl may not want to see that same matchup again. Oh, and I already have a hook up for cheap Armed Forces Bowl tickets for law enforcement.

  35. I agree with you, SouthBendGreen. We were playing Tulsa with our hair on fire. I have watched the game 4 times already. And here are a few of more points to add to your observations. 1. Special Teams play was outstanding. They really got the momentum rolling for us. The 1st blocked punt gave us good field position which we converted into our first touchdown of the game. And the 2nd blocked punt turned into an instant touchdown that put us up 14-10. That TD knocked the wind out of Tulsa and kicked us into another gear.. 2. The offense was as equally fun to watch as the defense. The O-line, the running backs, the tight-ends, the receivers, and Thompson were all working together and making plays. Even McNulty threw a halfway decent block for a qb on Jimmerson's second TD run. And another thing that is obvious when watching the game over and over is that Smith, Byrd and Thompson may not be the flashiest players, however they can get the job done. And they did just that this season. 3. The Mean Green fan noise was incredible. One can clearly hear our fans chanting, singing, and yelling in the background. And that, my friend, is simply awesome. Hearing cheers for UNT and the Mean Green as we play in another school's stadium is priceless.

  36. Ryan has had a very impressive season. Dude is an unsung hero and really has played his butt off this year. It's unfortunate that we don't give him the full appreciation he deserves, but I know Orr and those linebackers appreciate your son to death.

  37. I was pretty hands off with Benford last year, because I just think there could have been numerous factors working against him, new head coach, new system, players loyal to JJ, players hoping Forest would've been hired, etc.., but this year is bringing my worst fears to the surface. I think Benford is one of those career assistants that every program needs because they are great recruiters. He obviously connects with his players, appears to be a pretty nice guy, but just isn't cut out to be the head coach. Good recruiters/assistants are the one's that really connect with the players and develop a relationship with them. Many times, their personalities tend to be along the lines of a "people pleaser" and they work hard to make everything right and avoid conflict. Playing for your best friend seems like a great deal because you know what you can get away with and don't always have to give your best effort, and your best friend may be hesitant to get in your face because they don't want to ruin a relationship. They want you to like them. This is great as a lead recruiter or an assistant, because, as a player, this is the person you can turn to when you need someone to listen, etc... Many highly successful head coaches have to have the ability to motivate their players and sometimes that means pushing a player to the point that the player doesn't like the coach. These coaches don't care if the player likes them, they want them to but it doesn't effect their job performance, because they will do what it takes to get the most out of a player. People pleasers have a difficult time kicking a player in the butt if it is needed. I was honestly scared of the best coach I ever played for. I was scared to disappoint him, scared to not do my best, scared to the point that I practiced with a 102 degree fever because I didn't want to tell him I didn't feel good. I grew to love this coach and respected him than any other coach I ever played for, but it took time. He appeared to honestly not care if we liked him or not at the time, because he utilized every means to make us successful, which his teams always were. I think Coach Mac is a great example of this personality. I think every player in that locker room respects Coach Mac and Coach Mac likes them, but you have to earn his respect by doing things the right way, not cutting corners, being good on the field and off, etc... If you can't become the player/person he envisions because you aren't willing to make that sacrifice, then you will be replaced. It doesn't mean he doesn't like you, but you didn't earn his respect. These are the coaches you will run through a brick wall for, because your respect for them instills a fear or attitude in you that you will do everything to never disappoint them. I don't know if Benford has that in him or not. He will recruit and sign great talent because he knows how to connect with his players and build a relationship immediately. He is good at becoming their best friend, the person that is always telling them how good they are and how great they can become, but can he flip that switch and kick their ass when needed? I think Vic Trilli was this way and Benford could be also. Neither seemed to be cut of the cloth of a Coach K, Roy Williams, Rick Majerus, Jim Boeheim, etc... that will never hestitate to get in a player's face when it is necessary. Hope I am wrong, and this is all speculation on my part, but this could be an issue. Just an opinion from a middle aged white guy with limited basketball skills.

  41. I pulled quotes because you said these were the sole cause of the earthquakes. You not me. The article states they may cause... Don't change your arguement to win a debate, stick to your original comment. You also stated they cause water pollution. If it is done correctly, this is not true and the pumping of waste water back into the ground is done at a level below the water table. Regarding global warming: http://www.climatedepot.com/2013/07/15/suns-bizarre-activity-may-trigger-another-little-ice-age-or-not-solar-activity-is-in-gradual-decline/ Funny thing is that this report claims there could be a mini-ice age with very cold winters and other publications state that this will have a minimal effect on global warming. The fact is that there is still much research to be done regarding global warming, so nobody really knows.
