  1. I'm an alumni of both schools, though I got my undergrad at UNT... being involved with both schools I would not say that SMU alums have more money, rather the school is better at getting money out of their alumni. SMU has a very strong connection with their alumni association, they wine us and dine us, and then out come our check books. I have always been a UNT football fan and make most home games, but that alumni center next to the stadium is a joke, its a tool shed with a bathroom, hardly anyone is ever in there. if you ask me, the school needs to turn the alumni center around on game day, make it a place that every alum wants to visit on game day, free drinks and food, shake hands with former players, and the check books will come out.

  3. With the game being at the Cotton Bowl, I also think it would be a great time to extend the olive branch to UNT-D. Whatever deal the UNT students get, apply that same discount for UNT-D students.

  4. 1)A Beyond The Green box set with all of the episodes on DVD. Maybe a disc of out takes. I might buy a few extra copies and accidentally place them in high school football locker rooms. Cough...Desoto, Allen...cough 2)Another season of Beyond The Green next year. 3)Another season highlight DVD like the ones we bought during the last bowl era. I still watch that '02 disc and get excited.

  5. I'm leaving it until after the CUSA title game. To remind all the fans, including me, not to take a win for granted. That piss-poor performance cost this team a chance at hosting the conference title game.

  6. Comparing UNT-D to UTEP or any of the UT system schools is not equal. Those system schools were long-standing universities prior to assimilating into the UT system. UNT-D is an infant school. I highly doubt their students have "Jaguar Pride". Why not encourage them to come see big brother play just up the road? We always talk smack about UTSA, UTA, etc... being full of students who only want to transfer to Austin. Why don't we try and foster the same feelings for our system school to the South? I wonder what the # of bright students at UNT-D wearing Mean Green gear would be? Probably nowhere near the # of UT/A&M supporters. This is a golden opportunity to change that.

  12. JF Thomas is a better receiver than Fonzale Davis. Not negative but a fact. Check back with me next year to see if he receives a higher profile scholarship (than North Texas) I don't rely on stats or third party rating systems to form opinions of players. I also stated that Fonzale was a nice pickup when he committed. I saw 7 SOC games this year. and about the same amount last year. I am a 1972 graduate of SOC and have followed the program since my soph year. JF Thomas didn't play football last year; where Fonzale; was the only returning WR. Most of Davis' yards came from the bubble screen that was open all year. Thomas concentrated on basketball where he would be a good UNT recruit for Benford. I never said Fonzale couldn't play. I can't, however, proclaim him to be the next UNT Hall of Famer when I see him drop key passes game after game. (Stats don't reflect this) SOC did exactly what I thought they would do. They had more talent than anyone else they played this year. (approx. 10 D1's over the next 2 years) They beat a 3rd place team in the opening round (DISD school) and played great against Frisco Centennial. They turned around and gave up 63 points to a Wylie team losing by 3 touchdowns against an inferior team. Thank God they won't play Highland Park next weekend where it would really get ugly. SOC also lost to a decent Carter team to finish 2nd in the district. Carter was blown out by a 3rd place Lincoln team in the first round. Losing in the 3rd round is not "making noise in the playoffs" They were, at one time ranked #10 in the state. My exact words, if I can remember correctly, were if they play like they played against Summit they would not do anything in the playoffs. I have followed Desoto for a number of years now. (Saw about 6 or 7 games this year) I said, and still believe, that Desoto does not have a championship defense to win a state title. That is the goal for the program. Desoto has had over 100 D1's over the past 10 years. They were behind by 10 points late in their game against Coppell because of an average defense (and bad coaching) I never said that they would lose to Coppell. I may have said that they could lose to Coppell. The road to a state title goes through Allen. They can score on anyone but their defense will not stop Allen. As for recruiting, why is every commit "a great get for North Texas"? If I don't agree that everyone is a steal, how is that being negative? I have followed NTSU/UNT recruiting for about 38 years now. Go back as far as you'd like and you will see a familiar pattern where every recruit is a stud! If a kid is undersize, not a problem. The coaches will put 20-30 pounds on them. If a kid is too slow, the strength coach will increase their speed. If a kid has no other offers, no problem, we must trust in our coaches. I call them like I see them. If you look hard enough, you may find some posts were I was extremely pleased with some recruits. RJ Bond is the recruiting coordinator/Asst. Coach @ South Oak Cliff. Prior to SOC, he held a similar position at Skyline. RJ's chief job is to get every kid a scholarship. He has a HUDL for each kid that he sends to every college; with weekly updates on what the kid did positive each week I understand this process very well. My sole purpose in reading a message boards is to learn facts about the team and players. I can do without most opinions, especially when they are based, in part, on "made for recruiting videos". Your point is well taken though. I get that mosts fans only want to read feel good stories and posts.

  14. Very concerned about the possible projections of Texas State in HOD with us. That would be a catastrophe.

  15. No way Michigan is in HOD game, and if they were that would be very bad for us. Lets not get ahead of ourselves, great season but we arent on that level just yet. We would have to have a dynamic offense to compete at that level. Georgia was nice in that we were tied in the 3rd, but HAVING TO HAVE 2 scores from special teams to compete is not a sustainable model.

  16. One of the best experiences as a student at North Texas was yesterday at the Tulsa game. It felt good to be Mean Green. I was a member of the group who signed up for SGA's charted bus from UNT to Tulsa. We left at 8am and arrived back on campus at 10pm. Why was there a victory that wasn't mentioned? Our fans at that game rocked that entire stadium. I really believe it was due to all the students that were shuttled from campus. There were about 40 of us in the endzone starting most of the chants. Accidental or not we happened to be leaders in all different departments and organizations across campus. We started 95% of the NORTH TEXAS that everyone was hearing on the broadcast, including DEFENSE and BLOCK THAT PUNT (again). So kudos to SGA for doing this.. this should be done for pretty much every away game next season. Our fans even when we were down 7-10 Tulsa, were on their feet and loud. Tulsa even turned up their sound system to try and block us out. Their 17,792 attendance could not block us out. The field marshals/security people were even making snide remarks at us. I believe that we blew that stadium up and roared with only 800-900 fans. I am happy that we gave UNT Football the love that they deserve.

  17. Watching us destroy Tulsa (while seeing Rice go on to win as Marshall beat ECU) got me thinking about what could have been and why it wasn't. I'll say that I think that if we end up in the HOD bowl and have a HUGE showing by students, fans, and alumni, the UTSA loss may end up being a blessing in disguise as it will allow us to build a lot of buzz locally and state-wide -- and offer easy travel for recruits -- but I digress. It seems we are a better team when we run the ball more. I realize this is an obvious statement, but I was surprised to see how much better when I looked at the respective games. Against UTSA we attempted to throw the ball 46 times and only attempted to run it 28. - Loss Against Tulane, we threw the ball 42 times, ran it 20. - Loss Against Rice, we threw the ball 13 times, ran it 43. - Win Against Tulsa, we threw the ball 26 times and ran it 50. - Win I realize the game plan is different for each opposing defense (and UTSA is probably a better defense -- and certainly a better offense -- than Tulsa), but given the fact that a single touchdown would have tied UTSA's effort, makes you wonder if we abandoned our strength too soon and relied too heavily on our weakness. It's all moot now. And I'm not a football coach or a football "mind"... just thought it interesting.

  21. You do realize that when you get behind in games, you throw the ball more out if necessity, correct? And likewise, when you are ahead in games, you run the ball to keep the clock moving. Looking at overall numbers the way you just did tells one nothing about what actually transpired in each game. What were our average yards per carry in each game? Did we run the ball effectively?

  22. You do realize 15K students came to that game, right? That's bigger than a lot of SEC student sections. God forbid the apathetic alumni do anything. You know what make them do something? A bowl game. In Dallas. Against Michigan or Nebraska.

  23. Right, because a game against Texas St is so much more appealing... It's a bowl game. I want a test for this football team. Michigan would be perfect.

  24. The whole pound the ball vs throw it on first down thing has been long debated on this forum. Pounding the ball early and often usually pays off later in the game. It's like hitting a rock with a sledge hammer. Nothing much happens until it suddenly breaks. It also sets up situations later in the game when your "predictable play calling" suddenly isn't.

  26. For anyone curious as to how things worked out on this. . . . I had someone scan and e-mail my tickets to me, and I printed that out. I showed up at the Tulsa ticket office and they told me to bring my printout to the gate to see if they would scan, and if not, they would print out a second set of tickets for me. But they scanned just fine at the gate, and the lady who scanned them was saying how much easier it was to scan them that way. I think I even may have had options without the printout, but that might have been a little dicey. I'm not recommending that anyone forgets their tickets in the future, but at least you can know you don't have to panic if you do.

  29. I don't know why we continue to hide behind the excuse that the parents may read this board. All I said was that I have not seen anything to warrant such high praise. At some point in life little junior has to grow up. I have a 6-1, 267 lb DT nephew that's an 8th grader. Skyline and Bishop Lynch are actively recruiting him (parents) for next year. I couldn't believe the criticism of some adults directed at the kids at the game I attended. My sons were criticized when they played ball a few years ago. Stuff happens. When your kid signs a letter of intent or pro contract, parents understand that it comes with the territory. See Derek Thompson threads on this board.

Until the touchdown strike to Harris to put him over 7,000 yards in total offense, all of Derek Thompson's record setting plays this season had come on 3rd down with 5 or more yards to go. Derek needs only seven more yards passing and/or rushing to become North Texas' only D-I/FBS-level quarterback to have more than 7,500 yard of total offense in a career.

  40. That's why it's called a HIGHlight film. The players pick the plays and their coaches cut it up for them. Cooley, I respect your knowledge and your insight, but you've been trolling hard this recruiting year. You've been saying a lot of negative and very little positive. If we had half as many people in the recruiting forum as the football forum, you'd get blasted about saying negative things when recruits and their parents read these boards. You said there was no way South Oak Cliff would make any noise in the playoffs because of their ugly win against Mansfield Summit earlier in the year, yet they went 11-2 and made it to the third round. You also said Fonzale Davis was the 2nd best receiver on his team, yet he had over twice as many catches and over three times as many yards as JF Thomas, the guy you said was SOC's best receiver. You also said DeSoto didn't have the defense to make a deep run and they'd lose to a team like Coppell or Allen. Yet they're now 13-0 after beating Coppell. You don't have to say all these players are going to be future all-conference guys for us, but you also don't have to blast them and say things like "Can someone remind me why we offered Brandon Garner?" Again, the insight is appreciated, just be careful not to go to far when criticizing these kids.
