  1. Sometimes it's good to remember your history so you'll know there will still be some great days ahead. We have been here before,... many times actually. In 2001 we lost to a 6 year old program in South Florida in Denton 28-10. 7 weeks later we would lose to 1-A first year provisional Troy 18-16 on a last second field goal that tipped off of one of our players' fingers and still made it across the bar. These two losses embarrassingly sent us to the inaugural N.O. Bowl with a losing record at 5-6. But we still had a great time and built on that season the next year. The next year we managed to lose to South Florida again in Florida. Still finished a great season at 8-5 and got a win in the N.O. Bowl against C-USA co-Champion Cincinnati finishing one of our best years ever. Then followed that season up in '03 with another conference championship run, a rout of Baylor in Denton and another N.O.Bowl trip. In '04 we lost to 1-A provisional Florida Atlantic 20-13 in Denton and finished 7-5 and on to another N.O. Bowl. In fact we lost to FAU five straight years which is hard to believe. Anyhow,...just saying,.. we have lost to lower, much lesser teams before and bounced back. And we will do it again. Beat Tulsa and Go Mean Green! Rick

  2. And this mentality is what you are going to get every year with Mac. People can blame Chico all they want, I just hope their jaws don't drop if/when he's gone and we're still having this same conversation. Now where did I put that contract extension?

  3. What a great senior class. Very encouraging to see how they've progressed. If we can continue to get that much progression from guys in the future then we have a lot to look forward to.

  4. We needed one loss to be eligibe to receive an invitation to the Heart of Dallas Bowl instead of getting locked into the Liberty Bowl. As much as I hate to lose any game, this is better than the interuptions caused by a December 7 trip to Greenbough, NC and having to lose there to avoid the Liberty. We are now on course for a New Years Day date in the Heart of Dallas Bowl in the Cotton Bowl Stadium. That is, and always has been, the best case scenario for North Texas this season. The athletic department needs to work with the university and the City of Dallas to create the biggest New Years Eve party possible in the Dallas West End complete with outdoor stage for cheerleaders, dance team, Green Brigade, and to promote this party to the North Texas students and alumni. There's more than a month to plan, it should be done correctly.

  5. We gave up as many seconds as the refs did, and neither should happen. It is a consistent coaching philosophy of this staff to give up seconds on the clock, whether at the end of the half or at the end of the quarter. We let time run off at the end of the third quarter when it seemed like we could have run a play. Really didn't appear to have a sense of urgency (or purpose) until late in the game GMG

  7. The reason that we had no offense today was bc the defense and/or special teams didn't score for us today. this is what our offense has been most of the season.

  8. Look at in one year how high the expectations have been raised, which is a great thing. I would assume that if most of our fan base had been told that after 11 games, with any combination of wins and losses that we would be 7-4, most would be ecstatic. Yet, it is hard not to be extremely disappointed with where we aren't.. We should be playing for a division title next week, but bad losses happen. At the very least, this season has raised the expectation level, and hopefully the bar will stay high.

  9. The best way to get over one game is to come out on top in another. Taking a queue from our fearless leader, it's now been 24 hours and attention should turn to Tulsa (3-8 overall, 2-5 CUSA). 1:30 PM start time with highs in the 50s and lows in the 40s. 3 wins: Colorado State UTEP LaTech. 8 losses: Bowling Green Oklahoma Iowa State Rice Tulane UTSA ECU Marshall The current line sits at UNT -5/12. I would say Tulsa is one of the teams we need to repay from the Dodge era, but we also need to repay them for the Dickey era as well. We have quite a history with Tulsa and we have a long way to go to evening up the series with them. This will be our last opportunity to play against Tulsa for sometime as they are moving on to the AAC next season. Their fans have always been very welcoming and one of the classiest groups I, personally, have ever run into. Happy to be in a conference with them, even if it is only for one year. I was making designs to travel to see us clinch the west division, but as we all know sometimes things don't work out as planned. Time to make lemonade. Despite the loss to UTSA, we still have one of the top defenses in school history which should come in handy in this game. I'd really like to see the offense get back in sync before these seniors round out this campaign in whatever bowl game we get invited to. Tulsa has historically been a very physical team when playing us, no reason to expect any different this go round.

  10. We played the first 3.25 quarters like we had a 14 point lead. Coker just took Mac behind the woodshed.

  17. So you are saying it is a school from the city of San Antonio that no one cares about, that is moving up to the top level of competition, where we have played for decades? I LOVE OUR CHANCES!

  18. Man, I don't know about that. We are all so spoiled by the D winning games for us and they didn't tonight. But that's not to say their play wasn't sufficient to win at home. They only gave up 21pts. You can't expect them to cause 4 turnovers and score a TD every game. The Offense has to win us some games and they haven't played well enough to do that the last few weeks. It's pretty clear, if our D doesn't play like the best D in CUSA, this offense can't do enough to win. Period.

  22. Make no mistake about it there is plenty of blame to go around. On another thread I commented on how the team didn't play championship defense on Saturday. I guarantee you every man on that defense would agree with that, Zach Orr even said as much. I think most everyone that follows this team knows defense and special teams has carried the load. No surprise. So when the defense has an off day it gets magnified and ends up in a loss. But yes the offense probably does shoulder most of the load. Poor throws, dropped passes, bone-headed procedure penalties inside the 10 and on and on and on. It has been a broken record for this offense for the last how many weeks?

  23. I responded to this McCarney game plan thing on one of Harry's threads. McCarney is McCarney. He's gonna dance who who brung him. The run game brung him, and so he's going to stick with it. We're either happy to be 7-4 and in a bowl game dancing with the run game that brung us, or...? I think the main problem is, as discussed over the past few seasons, is adjusting within the game. Although, honestly, I'm really having a hard time complaining much at 7-4 and still a chance to get and eighth and ninth win. I was one who, before the season, said we'd only win four games - and, only by a miracle would we get as many as six! I've never been so happily wrong! So, as low as my bar was set for this group in August, I'm happy. If McCarney's groups are going to be run heavy and have us in the thick of the conference races late in November, I'm not going to compain a whole lot. Besides, most of the things we used to complain about have been addressed and conquered: -Get a real stadium, check -Get a real coach and coaching staff, check -Get us in a conference with more bowl ties, check -Stop the eight year losing streak and bowl drought, check -And set the school attendance record to boot, check I'm starting the think that unless some people see McCarney, RV, and DT walk on water, they are going to lose the faith altogether. It's as though many people here are like the kid who got a $100 bill in his Christmas stocking, then complained that he didn't get two. If McCarney or RV left at this point, after all the work they've done, would anyone be surprised? If they can't make you happy by attaining the goals we said we wanted achieved, why would they stay? If you all were my kids, I'd whip yer asses with a belt and send you to your bedrooms with no dinner!

  24. I live in Austin and deal with condescending UT a-holes on a daily basis. I remember our game at Ford Stadium against SMU and what a bunch of d-bags they were (especially the talk on mylittleponyfans.com). I thought we were a fanbase that wished the other teams good luck and didn't belittle them or their university. I guess we can only be humble when we are getting are asses whipped year in and year out.

  28. Interesting that we are just a few weeks removed from arguing if DT is a HOF. Unfortunately not being able to see the game I can't really give much opinion. While I don't doubt DT struggled and the drops killed us the most frustrating thing in listening to the game was almost every 3rd down. I got sick and tired of UTSA being in 3rd and long and then hearing George say some incarnation of Souza back to pass....complete for a first down. Just disgusting. Of course the defense has been the backbone this season no question! But that was terrible. Skladany has the guys say "Championship Defense" in the locker room. That was nowhere near championship defense on Saturday. Plain and simple. Zach Orr even admitted it. And also funny how a few weeks ago we were comparing this defense to 2002. No chance the '02 defense allows that many 3rd down conversions.

  29. Agreed. But that's a pretty small sample size. And Brock has yet to throw a pass for us. I'm assuming M_G09 has watched a considerable amount of practice to make that statement.

  30. The time has come for me to say goodbye to you guys... With the game over and done with, the entertainment value of messing with y'all and getting into your heads is gone. Congratulations on a great season! Finish out strong by dismantling Tulsa, and then winning your bowl game. May y'all have a prosperous off-season, landing many of your recruiting targets, and developing your players over the spring! It was fun smack talking back and forth... and just maybe, I'll be back next season leading into the game. Until next time amigos!

  31. The third quarter decision was jaw-dropping to me. We had them on the ropes and gassed on a pretty good drive, then sat on the last 30 seconds only to move down to their end of the stadium. Now, there is no guarantee if we go up and run the play in the third we score, but instead, we flipped sides, let them catch their breath and adjust and then farted and fell our way to a FG at the 13:35 mark of the fourth quarter. Even if we got stuffed and ran another play with the same result after the quarter change, we have another 40 seconds or so at the end. I know this is all extra-reinforced with hindsight, but we were scratching our heads in the stands for sure.

  32. I'm new here (how this place escaped me for so long is still a mystery), it was my first game this season and while it sucked playing like a local professional team, it was a blast either way. Props to UTSA for giving us a loss like that, I hope karma returns the favor next year. However, I sat on the UTSA side (old friend attended the school) and I gotta say, they'd fit in with Eagles fans. That probably made the loss that much worse lol. As a kid who's allegiance was always to Tech, I'm pretty damn proud of this school either way.

  34. Really people? Derek Thompson is terrible? The loss is on him? You guys are approaching insanity. He played average on Saturday. He made enough throws that with a little help we could have won the game. Thompson has never been the guy who UNT could solely rely on to win a game. He needs help from everyone around him including the coach staff. Saturday he didn't get that help. He missed on some throws, he had some drop passes on big 3rd downs, and he wasn't helped out by his OC. Here's a thought why did the offense panic? Why did we throwing the ball 46 times on a blustery winter day when we are a running team? We didn't stay patient with our running game like we always do and it cost us. So for those of you who are trying to place all or most of blame on DT please grow up. His play on Saturday was not the only reason we lost the game.

  35. Tulsa's losses are to decent teams. If losing to the University of Phoenix on Saturday didn't pull our heads out of our asses then we are in line for more disappointment.

  36. Its not the teams choice, so Rice doesn't get to pick it. The bowl picks it. All the teams can do is accept it or decline it.

  37. I always think this is a lame comeback. RV and Mac are making a lot of scratch to get these guys motivated and playing for a few hours on 12 Saturdays. If the players were not getting after it, it falls on these 2 rich guys!

  38. i thought this topic was going here for a second http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQArDMKdSVc DT did not play well... but drops in the redzone on a sure touchdown pass by Jimmerson and a first down opportunity by D. Smith killed any momentum we had whatsoever... i said it before and Ill say it again... this game played out almost exactly like the Troy game from last year, where the offense looked just as bad

  39. As far as the announcer is concerned, he needs to tone down the volume, stop talking over the band so much when they leave the field playing the fight song and PLEASE stop with loud and irritatiing "ITS THIRRRRD DOWN". That is so Southland Conference.

  41. I predict UTSA will look to us as rivals (as we should be happy to see anyone at this point), and from what I have seen on this board this week, I predict this we will assume the role currently played by SMU fans in how they think of NT. Imagine NT playing the elitist snob! It may not be a true rivalry yet...I agree that a single game doesn't make it a rivalry. But if it becomes one, that is good for North Texas. They brought fans and a band, as many tickets as an opponent has purchased against us this year and maybe since Apogee. It is easy for our fans to get to their city. How we travel affects how we are perceived. The more games we can get our fans interested in attending, the better it is for our team, our school and our place in the hierarchy of college football. But, GMG

  43. I like to read fan comments from my favorite teams and my beloved UNT, but I never post...mostly because of comments and arguments like some on this thread. However, the title "McCarney had better apologize for this" set me off. Here are some thoughts from a 2nd generation alum with 2 degrees from U of NT... 1. The name of the thread itself...Seriously?! I am so thankful to be back in a bowl game that I am beside myself. The loss is disappointing, but this is a winning season with some great plays made by our players and gutsy calls by our coach. I will take this over the Dodge era any day and I am excited at the reasonably quick turnaround considering the scholarship restrictions and general mess that had to be cleaned up. Thanks Coach Mac and please stick around! 2. The "power of the forum" shenanigans...I think both sides are actually right. Trash talk before a game is normal and no coach, player, or average fan will give a crap. But trash talk and a superiority complex that lingers for a long long time towards one school as what apparently has been the case around here with regards to UTSA creates legit bulletin board material. That kind of garbage is partly way we hate SMU so much. I know their trash talk would be shared with our players if we were to play them and think most of you would agree. UTSA played with more than just a chip...In general, a forum is an interesting read for a fan like me, and a place to vent for fans like you, but sometimes it can be ripe fruit for firing up an opponent beyond the normal "it's game time" level and transcend into heated rivalry mode. 3. And for rivalries, what is so bad about UTSA becoming a rivalry. They are not that far, obviously fired up and starting FBS football with a relative bang, and would tie in perfectly with a reasonably good attendance building showdown for schools like us, Rice, LaTech, ect. It might be due to the fact that I cheer for the little guy and the upset (you should see my brackets in March) unless they are playing us, but I don't get why their is snobbish SMU style hate from some of you towards them. They are relatively close and want to play. Congrats to them for a good win in a meaningful game and let's get some payback next year. Finally, back to my first point which got me taking the time to actually post...I agree with the Bill Snyder comment. He got beat by a David team that punched a Goliath right in the mouth...it does not mean that he is a bad coach, and the same goes for Mac. We made it back to a bowl game folks!!!

  44. Just curious why a bowl with no affiliation with the AAC would be worried about what SMU wanted?

  45. I hope UTSA and Tulane both win. I would love to see Roadrunners in Championship game as they just flat beat us,as opposed to the Tulane loss where we gave the game away.Plus we would be in 3 way tie for 1st in West, which may[big may] improve our bowl position. I think we just played our way out of H.O.D. Bowl, as well as West winner and CUSA championship. Just an old mans opinion, but give UTSA the credit they deserve.

  48. If it's any consolation, after the loss yesterday, at least y'all get to watch Mean Green on Sundays. Dunbar is having a good game today. Pretty involved in the offense this afternoon. UTSA will have to wait a little bit before we see Runners on Sunday. Well... There was Teddy Williams on the Dallas practice squad. But he was a track guy before the football team.
