  1. Yep during their CFB go around they probably spent at least half the segment talking about the NT game and the whole homecoming experience. A bunch of their friends from school flew here for the game, tailgated etc. Junior said it is a cool tailgating scene now at the hill, NT hammered UTEP which was really fun to see. They talked about getting on the halftime show with Jub Jub which was a really funny story. After the game they went around campus to check it out and had some drinks somewhere on the square. Then they all went to Jub Jub's house and had some type of party. So a lot of great talk and pub from Junior.

  4. This is really a very good conversation to have as one can easily see the various "experiences" and beliefs one has with regard to this subject. The challenge lies in that this stuff does not just magically happen...it actually is a two-way street. A little effort or more effort on everyone's part would work wonders. It is hard to keep folks "up to date" if they have no real interest in being kept up to date or being part of the process. And, it is a process. Being a life alumni association member of all three of the universities from which I graduated gives me a bit of perspective on how this is done at these three institutions. But, the central theme of all is "help us help you". Hard to help folks who think there is no "value" in being a member of the Alumni Association. What is the Alumni Association to do in that case? Some believe value is "how much stuff do I get", some believe the value is seen in helping ones university and in staying connected to their university, and some see it as a combination of both. This is a conversation taking place at this very time within the UNT Alumni Association and across the campus itself. You might be amazed to know how many folks use the services of the Alumni Association and participate in Alumni Association sponsored events, yet do not join the Alumni Association. Should those folks be banned from these events or should there be additional events planned where membership is REQUIRED for attendance or should things stay as they are? Takes money...memberships = funds available = more activities possible. Some folks who use the services are the same ones who think there is no benefit to joining the Alumni Association. Hard to find the happy medium in all this. cannot tell you how frustrating it can be at times listening to these "older grads" complain about stuff that happened "way back when" as if it were still the same today. Yet, they have taken no steps on their own to find out what is going on today as opposed to "back in the day". When that discussion comes up it is interesting to be able to tell them what it is like today and how things are different. After that, well, they need to take a tad bit of initiative and find out if things have changed...if they are actually interested. This type of conversation rarely happens with our recent grads. A good sign I would think that things are changing and changing for the better. I realize that one's own attitude toward all this plays a major role...as it does in life itself...but, this is a tough challenge for UNT after having paid scant attention to it for so many years. BUT, UNT now has an administration that "gets it" when it comes to Alumni and the Alumni Association. This, even in the very recent past, was not the case for UNT. Hard for most folks to believe, but true. All over the campus the realization of how important a strong Alumni base can be is finally sinking in with folks, who, in the past were not open to even discussing the matter. Challenge is, UNT lost generations of grads, and many of those are not going to "come back" and will continue to live in the past that they have known. Some will come back, but you lose them in generations, but you have to get them back one at a time. The point is to not lose them in the first place, and that is where a lot of effort is being made these days. On current students and on recent grads. No, not ignoring the "older grads", but attitude counts as does how much time and how much money one has to operate with. Who are the most receptive to being contacted? Who has an open mind and not one that wants to constantly dwell on the past and what it was "back then"? The past is just that...the past. If one wants to see UNT as it was "back then", then there is little opportunity to bring these folks home. If folks are willing to help UNT help them reconnect or to stay connected there are ways and those "ways" are increasing. If you would like to be "more connected" join the Alumni Association. There you have info coming at you via email, Facebook, Linkedin, snail mail, The North Texan (again...not a publication of the Alumni Association itself), etc., etc. Dues are still only $40, but that $40 and your membership goes a long way to help your university. Especially in light of the new support agreement recently negotiated and signed between the University and the Alumni Association. So, good discussion here folks. While individual "challenges" remain on a case by case basis, it can be "fixed" given that both parties...yes, both parties, are willing to see that it is fixed. Not going to happen for the folks who want to dwell on the past, want to be spoon fed or just don't really care. The future really is NOW at UNT. This university is really moving forward in so many great ways, and, for me, this is the greatest time EVER to be associated with this great university.

  5. It wasn't UNT. They stay at the Mariott out by TMS. It was UTEP. By the way, this is a common practice at EVERY NCAA school and has been that way forever, not just the last 10 years.

  6. And THIS is why you guys are a joke. You just actually won a game......against an FBS program with a winning record...for the first time......EVER And you're all the sudden competitive at this level. You'll excuse me if I don't take you seriously. And you're going to get severely beaten in a couple of weeks. Remember. Some of you started this with your idiotic smack talk. I already feel sorry for you.

  8. No, it's RV's fault for: 1) not convincing the BOR to pay for a real coach. That is his job as AD. 2) settling on an assistant when he told us a thousand times we were done hiring assistant. You can keep apologizing for RV if you want, but this is squarely in his shoulders.

  9. North Texas cannot communicate with its alums unless they have said alums (young and old) most recent address. Since I graduated in 1976, I've moved 5 times. Each time it was my responsibility to make sure I was on their mailing lists. GMG!

  10. Allow me to play tour guide for a minute. First, I was in the TU athletic department offices today and I got some pretty dirty looks before I realized I had on a NT cap! HA! Anyhow I removed the cap (they are a client after all) and headed back to my client's office. He was saying that they really hope we travel well and I assured them we will bring a decent crowd given the proximity to DFW and the weight of this final game of the season. OK...... tour guide section. Let me start by saying there are two very divided sections of Tulsa. There is Midtown/Downtown and South Tulsa. There are lots of chain restaurants and hotels in South Tulsa. If that appeals to you..... stay home and watch the game from a damn Hooters/Chilis/Buffalo Wild Wings in Plano/Carrollton/Frisco. HA! No really though, if you want to experience Tulsa, stay and drink and eat in Downtown or Midtown (although hotels are more available downtown) There are a lot of great places to stay downtown, let me give you some information from a local. Here are some of our favorites. Mayo Hotel This is a beautiful historic hotel in the heart of downtown. It was restored about 5 years ago (it cost a fortune for the owners) and is the hotel that all the big stars stay at who play the BOK Center. It's not cheap, but if you're bringing someone to impress... this is a great hotel. http://www.themayohotel.com/ Ambassador Hotel This is the sister hotel to the Mayo, it's just outside downtown and a beautiful hotel in a quiet part of town near some great dining and what some believe to be the best coffee anywhere at DoubleShot. Read the reviews before you go to have coffee there. If you like cream and sugar and Starbucks.... choose another place. Again, the Ambassador can be spendy. Marriott Courtyard If you love historic downtowns and specifically Art Deco architecture, this is your place. In the heart of Tulsa's Deco District (huge collection of beautiful Art Deco skyscrapers) this hotel is only a few years old. It was opened in part of the old Atlas Life Building. There is a great fine Italian restaurant near here and it's not far from the Brady District and other downtown attractions. Walking distance for most. The buildings are truly amazing though, if you dig that kind of thing you will love Tulsa. Also, if you like fine men's gifts that are American made, check out my friends shop in this district called Bison and Bear. Lot's of cool stuff, tons of it made here in Tulsa. www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/tultd-courtyard-tulsa-downtown/‎ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bison-Bear/304785372892339 Aloft Downtown This is a brand spanking new hotel that was built in the old Tulsa City Hall (they completely gutted it and started over) and it's really cool if you like Aloft hotels (uber modern design and not terribly expensive). It was placed to serve those who are attending shows at BOK Arena and the Convention Center, but it's an easy walk to the Brady and Deco Districts and a nice cab ride to the Blue Dome. They just put a ton of money in this place, done by the same folks that did the Mayo Hotel renovation. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/alofthotels/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3736 Hyatt A nice hotel that's close to the Brady District and Blue Dome. It's not in the middle of everything, but does have great views of the Williams/BOK Tower (a half scale version of the World Trade Center towers, designed by the same architect and built shortly after the WTC) DoubleTree The DoubleTree is a nice place, but is far from the entertainment districts in downtown. They have a great government rate if you happen to suck on the teat of the taxpayer (my father does), but plan to cab it to restaurants and entertainment downtown. http://doubletree3.hilton.com/en/hotels/oklahoma/doubletree-by-hilton-hotel-tulsa-downtown-TULSDDT/index.html Holiday Inn City Center This is a really nice hotel with a great restaurant, it's not as far from entertainment as the Double Tree, but it's not as close as most of the others. http://www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/us/en/tulsa/tulms/hoteldetail?qAdlt=1&qChld=0&qRms=1&qPSt=0&qSmP=3&qWch=0&qSHp=1&qBrs=6c.hi.ex.rs.ic.cp.in.sb.cw.cv&qSrt=BRAND_SORT&qRpp=25&qRRSrt=rt&qFRA=1&srb_u=1&cm_mmc=mdpr-_-GoogleMaps-_-hi-_-tulms Fairfield Inn Brady District If you want to party/dine/shop and just hang out in the very cool Brady Arts District, this is the place to stay. It's brand new, cheap (if you can get a room) and smack in the middle of the Brady. The best steakhouse in town (and most formal/expensive) is in this hotel's building. It's called Pryme. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/tuldt-fairfield-inn-and-suites-tulsa-downtown/ Savoy This is a funky little luxury hotel with very few rooms in a very quiet little part of town (but with restaurants and bars in walking distance. I haven't stayed here, but have been inside and it's very nice. It's just to the east (towards TU) of downtown. Again... if you are bringing someone to impress... this is a great place. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hotel-Savoy/114281871929892 Campbell Hotel OK, this is a really cool little hotel across the street from TU, but if you want a room, book NOW, it's not a big place and sells fast. It has a neat little bar, a great restaurant and you can be at the stadium in 5 or less walking minutes. The rooms are all different and were designed by local designers during one of the showcase events they have here in Tulsa. We walk here most weekends to eat brunch. It's a quick cab ride or drive back downtown to hit the districts. Desert Hills Motel Long for the yesteryear of Route 66? Love neon? Plan on driving your classic car up? Not scared by the occasional appearance of a hooker? Looking for an affordable room? This is your place. A real 1953 motor court on historic Route 66 that is kept in pretty decent shape and is not far (not walking distance) from the TU campus. It's in a not great part of town, but lots of Route 66 tourists stay here every summer. A neat place if that's what you are looking for. http://www.deserthillstulsa.com/ OK, let's talk food.... please, please, please, please don't eat chain food while you are here in Tulsa. Tulsa LOVES it's local restaurants and they are fantastic. Better than anywhere I have lived. There are far too many places to list them all, but UrbanSpoon is a great guide in this city. Below are a couple of my favorites. Maxxwells This is the restaurant at the Campbell Hotel. Very affordable, very good. Close to campus. Dinner is great, brunch is better. Burn Co. BBQ This is real BBQ. As real as anywhere in the city. Two cool young guys run it, it's currently located across the street from the stadium, but will likely move to 18th and Boston before the game. Lunch only, show up early, they sell out by 1pm-2pm most days. Game days will be earlier. The Tavern A great place in the Brady Arts District for a nice causal or even semi dressy meal. Mid-range on price, high on service and quality. If you have a group and want a cool experience, book the chef's table (nothing fancy, it's literally a table in the kitchen) This place has great drinks and even better food. Tacos Don Fransico Great little taco stand near the campus. A dive (they just translated the menu into English a couple years ago) but it's open late and is great for cheap late night (3am) eats. The entire Blue Dome District Really great restaurants with neat themes from local developers. The Dilly Deli has the best casual Sunday Brunch in downtown without a doubt. El Guapo has OK food, but a great rooftop with good drinks and a stellar view of downtown (may be closed by then do to cold weather). McNellies is a real Irish pub with great food and a huge HUGE beer selection. There are so many great places to eat. Check out as many as you can while you are here. Need something specific? Shoot me a PM or post here. There are lots of great bars here, but after a couple trips to New Orleans with Stebo.... I no longer partake in large quantities. There are neat little bars tucked all over town. One I really like is https://www.facebook.com/valkyrietulsa they are a little snotty about drinks, but if you like a cocktail, this is a great place. Also, Ed's Hurricane Lounge (across from TU) is NOT a friendly neighborhood sports bar..... it's a pretty hard core old bike bar. The only guy I ever knew who went there regularly was a real honest to God Bandido. They do have a sign stating you can't wear your colors... so I guess that's friendly? They also have an amateur lingerie night. I am sure that's REAL friendly. The bar at the Campbell Hotel is pretty cool and close to campus. If you are a "want to be seen" kinda guy, the bars on Brookside will get you seen by lots of other people that want to be seen. For a more relaxed neighborhood bar district check out Cherry Street. And of course the Brady and Blue Dome districts downtown are hopping. Stop in The Dust Bowl and you can have a drink and bowl a round. Too much and yet not enough at the same time. It's a great city. Great enough I will probably never come back to Texas. It's the perfect size and we have everything you could need without all the traffic. See you here! Shane

  11. In our third year of football, we beat Decatur Baptist College 127-0 over the course of two games as well as Southwest Texas State Normal School (Texas State) and Sam Houston Normal Institute (SHSU). That whole season we allowed 6 points. Boom.

  17. I think this is a joke of a thread!! Give the coach the support and the players.. Unless you have the money to give the university to make the change, then we all have no reason to not support it. I hope coach Benford has a lot of success, and if he does not, then at the point the make a change we can discuss who the next coach is.

  18. Well...that is not good. On an individual basis this stuff happens. Should it...nope! But, it does and people are people. Mistakes happen, folks drop the ball. What would I have done given the same situation? No problem, since I was interested, and assuming I really was, I would have waited a few days and contacted the Alumni Association by phone or email. I would explain that the ball had been dropped and would ask that info be sent. Problem solved....hopefully! Now, should you be the one having to follow-up? Nope...it should have happened as promised, but I find it interesting that they did not just hand you a brochure on the spot and answer your questions right then and there. Brochures are all over that place and staffers certainly can answer your questions. In fact, I handed a brochure to a guy this last Saturday at the Pavilion who was interested in purchasing a brick paver. Brochures are very handy and on display at the Pavilion. I know they were there during the Idaho game as well, so it would have been easy for that staffer to have handed you a brochure. Sorry too, given that you were there, that you did not see them. Bummer! PM me with your address info and I will make sure info is ent in the mail to you ASAP. If you wish, the info can be found on line at the Alumni Association's website. My apologies for the folks having dropped the ball on you. Really sorry it happened to you. Wish I could snap my fingers and eliminate stuff like this. I can tell you, however, that your experience is the exception these days, not the rule. It's the "exceptions" we would like to eliminate and are trying to do just that. Send me that PM. I won't drop the ball on you!

  21. In some cases it's a cop out...alums who don't give a damn just making excuses as to why they do not participate. Plumm is right, you have to work with the university if you want to be kept up to date...two or three moves and you are lost from the mailing list. If we go to a bowl and win and then have another good season next year, you will be surprised how many alums suddenly are 'big supporters'.

  23. 1. One thing you have to love as a Mean Green fan was the effort this team put out last night. They didn’t give up when it was 13 or a 12 point lead. They kept battling and made OU work for the victory. Now we just need to see consistent effort. 2. 16 TO’s. Your not going to win games against better teams if you turn the ball over like UNT does. UNT just doesn’t value the ball. I see way too many loose and care free passes. No need to make the fancy play, just make the smart play. 24. We are not elitist. Far from it. We have had to struggle and claw to get to where we are, which is only around #50 ion the BCS poll. It's been a hard road, something you would know zero about. The fact is, your program doesn't deserve anyone's respect. Not Tulsa's, not UTEP's, and not New Mexico's. I don't care that you won a football game. Your program and your facilities SUCK. You will eventually be a financial drag on this conference once the novelty wears off. According to you guys, you have been successful beyond your wildest dreams in this THIRD YEAR of your program, yet your attendance is in a free fall, You are a novelty in San Antonio. As soon as UT gets really good again, you lose your entire fan base. Students won't go to see a losing team because the stadium is 15 miles from campus. Just disaster written all over you.

  27. My initial reaction was we played hard but not smart. Too many turnovers and allowing 53 percent plus (believe the horrible announcer stated as so) from field is not going to get it done. Still waiting to see the commitment to d show up on the court.

  29. I agree, we should appreciate that the level of competition has reached the point that we have trash talking going on. However, what makes UNT special is that we have our own identity. True, this part of our DNA has made it difficult to build up our fanbase over the years, but we are making progress, a change that I believe is sustainable. In this new and rapidly evolving culture, we need to represent the values that are true to our character. We must strive to be welcoming fans. We must remember our recent past and be humble. Anybody can have idiotic, loud-mouth fans. Not many programs have a reputation for sportsmanship and class. Like our program, Denton is on the rise - from growing local businesses, to an ever-evolving world-famous music scene, we have much to offer visitors. Our University is going places - working to cultivate a reputation for research excellence and trying to attracting the brightest students. As die hard fans, we are stewards of Mean Green Nation, we need to welcome anybody and everybody that stops by. If we see things this way we will develop a culture that attracts talent, optimism, and authenticity, traits not easy to come by. UNT's laid-back charm and small-town quirkiness are what drew me to enroll, but it was only after embracing our independent character and learning to appreciate the diversity of our student body that I became enamored with my alma mater. In the end I wouldn't change anything about the choice I made; we may not have the superstructure of College Station, the well-heeled donors of Highland Park, or the alumni armies of Austin, but we do have a chance to make a choice about what we represent, the chance to resurrect our own traditions, and have fun charting our own future. Forget about 'them' and remember what UNT means to you. This year our team has worked hard to earn on-field success, so let's show them some love and enjoy what we have; a head coach of rare character, a team with tremendous heart, a shining stadium still in its infancy, and a new sense that the future is brighter than our past. To our foes I say "Welcome to Apogee Stadium, here's to an entertaining game, to keeping our teams safe, and win or lose, make sure you stop by Beth Maries before you head home." And to you, my friends and family, let's let our team's preparation and drive speak for itself on the field...
