Wish the game was a little better and the score more indicative of the talent we have on the field... Skip Holtz has literally ruined what we spent over 6 years building up - Plan on making the trip to Denton as many times as possible and hopefully for baseball one day! I have to say it's very hard watching the product we put on the field last Saturday as a Tech fan - very hard And that is not a knock on UNT - y'all know what you do and do it very well - basically physical hard football Good luck the rest of the year! We won. So, we're happy. No team plays the perfect game. The kids are giving great effort. No one is blowing us out. We have been in every game, even the losses, with a realistic chace to win all of them. As long as everyone is giving this type of effort, I don't see much room for complaint. Having the run game fixed has - and, will - cover a multitude of sins: Be able to run on offense, stop the run on defense, play effective and mistake free special teams = winning football in any era. I feel sorry for the people who don't accept wins as wins, and instead want sexier wins. Sorry, this isn't a sexy team; it's a tough team. And, I'm happy that we choose tough over sexy when it comes to football. Finesse football is for fags.8 points

Take care of business in Mississippi and that TV game against Rice at home becomes huge. Big enough that I might have to make a trip up to Denton, next week.6 points

Per Vito it's gone. " The screen pass that UNT has had picked off a couple of times this season has been forever banished from the playbook." http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/10/mccarney-presser-notes-video-coming.html/5 points

If you want to look at it in terms of "just wins" then this is the best answer. They beat a signature program (USC ) in the 1998 Sun bowl game. And then, so it wouldn't look like a fluke, they went 8-4 the next year and beat East Carolina in another bowl game. They then got their community behind them and started to consistently win. They got a big employer (BNSF) to make them a cool noise maker which made for a fun story in the media. They not only had banners hanging all up and down University Drive, they had them hanging all over downtown Fort Worth and the north side as well. YOU CAN'T JUST WIN FOOTBALL GAMES AND THEN EXPECT ALL THE PIECES OF A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM TO MAGICALLY APPEAR LIKE A BUNCH OF WILDFLOWERS AFTER A SPRING RAIN. It takes a coordinated and consistent effort by everyone in the North Texas community to turn this thing around.5 points

Hasn't he already done a bunch of what many projected would never happen? Most importantly- hasn't he already started to restore the terrible reputation that North Texas has had in the football community? Wasn't that a near impossible and highly unrealistic feat at the beginning of this season? Keep this man here PLEASE. He has already lit a match. Imagine what he can do with another 3 years....5 points

I got a chance to watch the USM/ECU game before ours on Sat. I have no idea what to pull from that game in all honesty because it was an absolute slaughter in every way, but I did notice a few things: 1. USM's offensive line is atrocious. 2. USM's offense is really slow. I think they must practice with little to no intensity or something because their game-play speed is just plain S.L.O.W. Plays take forever to develop. 3. USM's defense must be used to practicing against the slow offense, because they are very slow as well. 4. Carden is a really good QB with weapons everywhere. ECU uses Hardy alot like we use Chancellor. These guys tore up USM's defense. Unless the Mean Green defense comes out flat or something, this game should be a blowout with few points scored by USM. UNT just needs to execute their normal offensive game plan. Establish the run, minimize mistakes, get Brelan the ball, and wear the defense down with Byrd/Pegram. Defense just needs to do what they do... bust some heads and cause turnovers. These guys are slow, and we're really fast. The defense should have a field day. The 2nd/3rd stringers are going to see some significant playing time in this one. USM is really bad. And again, we're being dissed by another school by being named their homecoming opponent. Eat 'em up Mean Green! UNT: 45 USM: 13 EDIT: For any current players reading this thread, please contact any of the UNT football HOF'ers from the early 2000's and query them on how much they would like for you to pound USM even worse than my prediction above. 2 bowl losses to these goons. We owe them.4 points

I'm not negative, I35 traffic is negative. I thought it was quite positive to point out how the drive wasn't negative. Now, the drive to Austin next September? That will be negative. For you!! Cause I'm taking 281 and stopping in Marble Falls for some pie!! Now that is positive!!! So, suck it, Dallas people!!!4 points

No, UNT passed them by - Our team kicked their ass! Forget about such silly things as how the C-USA logo looks on Apogee's field. Instead, just take a look at Apogee itself and enjoy. Jeez!4 points

Hey guys, I don't have cool-awesome software to design some cool-awesome uniforms, but here's what we should definitely be wearing for Halloween, and I think it's really cool-awesome because I designed it myself! What do you guys think? Pretty awesome huh?3 points

There's nothing like having a couple of viable QB candidates breathing down your neck to either make you fall apart, or get better. Kudos to DT for going down the "get better" path. Also, kudos for not letting the "int" early in the game mess with his head.3 points

The Heart of Dallas Bowl is the most visible in our recruiting territory and most of our recruits will be in attendance. The Heart of Dallas Bowl is accessible to all of our local alumni. No need for travel or expensive hotels. Many that have not watched the Mean Green in years/decades will be enticed to come to this game. The Heart of Dallas Bowl is on January 1, 2014 giving our team a whole additional month of practice time, valuable time for developing players that will replace the departing seniors. The Heart of Dallas Bowl will be extremely cost effective for North Texas, providing additional revenue to invest in our programs. The Dallas West End will be an outstanding local for a Mean Green New Year's Eve Party the night before the Heart of Dallas Bowl.3 points

Of corse many of the starters were Dodge recruits, they're 4th and 5th year players and they are very experienced. Also to Mac's credit then is that he was able to win with players that he inherited. None of this "wait until he gets all his own recruits" crap.3 points
-
Boy, you're in a mood today... That wasn't exactly the argument. I was countering the fact that you said he hasn't done ANYTHING OR WON YET. I agree that this thread is premature, but you can't honestly suggest that he hasn't done anything to significantly benefit the program. WHY are you always more snippy when we win? Its kinda weird.3 points
-
While being a pathetic (but true) excuse for a positive: WE just won two games in a row for the first time since 2004. We're talking about winning conference and bowl games. I'd say that's a significant difference. Most recruits look at program directives, coaches and how they see themselves in a program/school first. Everything else, while being important, is secondary. He has undoubtedly had a huge positive effect on this football program. If three years is exactly when that's supposed to happen, then I guess he's on schedule.3 points

And don't Pay attention to those who insist that you must get down 2 scores to be successful. This is a bad team. Beat them badly.3 points

I am sure this was covered in another thread but can someone clarify what is planned for the Halloween game, i.e. pre-game trick or treating among the tailgaters, etc. Anything else specific to the youngsters? I am working on getting my brother to bring his kids to the game....and then they bring two friends, and they bring two friends, etc. Thanks to all. GMG2 points

It appears that the program is headed in the right direction in terms of wins & loses. However, the core of this team are Dodge recruits. Can McCarney recruit? Not sure based on his first 2 classes. Has he increased attendance? Has he beaten teams that he wasn't expected to? Have we seen an increase in interest from Area and State Top 100 recruits? Are we a winning program in 2013? Not sure an extension at this time makes sense. Shanice Stephens & Todd Dodge probably just came off the books. We may need to set aside funds for Tony Benford down the road. McCarney is our version of Jim Wacker (TCU) who talked a good game and had many believers. He never missed an opportunity to remind people how bad things were before he got there. As previously stated, Mac isn't going anywhere. If he does, the line of quality candidates would start at Apogee, extending through the bridge to Fouts Field. Coming in 2014: 65-70% of all D1 schools will go bowling. In fact, they may even have to lower the win total to 5 to help more schools qualify. This is worse than the UIL sending 4 district schools to the playoffs; with 2 state champions in each class. Going to a bowl game these day is as rewarding as a 1,000 yard rusher in the NFL (with 16 games) Another question: With a bowl berth, does Derek Thompson go into the UNT Hall of Fame? Would he bump someone on the All Century team if it was extended to 101 years? Stats are there and a Bowl game!2 points

Wow, my Coogs play on Halloween night too! Looks like we're both on TV that night. We play USF and fans are bemoaning such a terrible night and potential crowd. I like UNT's attitude and kids getting in free with a costume. The game with Rice should be very entertaining. My parents had five degrees from UNT so I'm glad to see your success this year and hope you can win out.2 points

II have no problem understanding why our program has been where its been for most of the last 20 plus years reading some of these posts. Let me count how many alums I know on this board who have seen more than 3 above .500 seasons in a row at North Texas or have seen an NCAA D1 Top 20 (25) ranking and then let me continue to say................I have no problem understanding why our program has been where its been for most of the last 20 plus years reading some of these posts. You get what you ask for or........at times we've gotten what we didn't ask for. GMG!2 points

Q: if we don't change offensive approach and still win out, does UNT90 still post 10 times a day about passing more on 1st half 1st downs?2 points

I would agree but the bold is questionable on athletics when most of his starters are from Dodge or walk-on. Now for even a sniff at an extension he needs to win 8 games and a bowl, but extend only 1-2 yrs. I would like to see what DMac does next year with the replacements for this years Seniors/Starters2 points

Mac was hired to come in here and right a ship that had been floundering aimlessly for almost a decade. He's done it, and he's done it the right way, by bringing in a qualified staff, by tirelessly promoting, and by recruiting athletes with quality academics as well as athletic ability. I don't know the schedule for offering extensions but it's almost a foregone conclusion that an extension is Mac's for the taking. Right now it is just a matter of when, as a bowl would certainly enhance his negotiating position.2 points

The Hawaii Bowl typically goes to the loser of the C-USA Championship game. I think it's a terrible bowl - Christmas Eve Day in a location most folks can't afford to go with two weeks notice.2 points

UNT is 4-3 and won two games in a row. Instead of talking about that, you want to take hypothetical shots at hypothetical fans for a hypothetical 0-6 season. The contortions you go through to always be disgruntled here are pretty amazing.2 points

Be smart. Use the 1st quarter to set up the 4th. Trust your defense & your game plan. Adjust to what your opponent shows you. Don't panic & don't pay attention to the folks who insist on negativity.2 points

Is this your idea of bait and switch or do you really think the coaching staff would lead him down this path? Thought in an earlier post you were critical of some of this kid's "abilities" due to his size. If UNT recruits him as a QB, great, but otherwise I am not in favor of using a big lie to land any recruit. Lies usually have a way of coming back to haunt one. Do you think he could be a D1 starting QB and perhaps take the job away from our heir apparent? Just asking.2 points
