I feel like you're on the attack here. Perhaps we've gotten off on the wrong foot. Look, I like you a lot. I'll just say I'm a big reason you've accumulated rep a lot more quickly than I have; because I've contributed mightily to yours. You do good work around here. You're a fellow optimist. I guess that's why I'm a little surprised you're taking aim at the students. The students have been sticking around (at least we did against Ball St., save a handful that just wanted to go back and "crush some beers" on the hill). We've just been moving over to the shade once we see the seats in the shade are empty. Unless our alumnus are the "show up after halftime" type, which I don't believe most of them are) the stands on the press box side were VERY bare. My point is -- a LOT of students showed up for the Ball St. game and a LOT of students stuck around through what was a rough 1/3 of the game to see a very rewarding final 2/3 of it. Our attendance problems are not all on the students. Now I'll say this -- an uprising in school spirit can certainly START with the students. A healthy student section can do a lot to get everyone fired up. But the students can only do so much. It's not like they allocate a majority of the stadium to us. We get 16 of the 48 sections, (1/3 for you math majors out there). But let's quit pointing fingers at everyone here and just start getting everyone we can to come out. How's that sound, m'kay?5 points

The leftist medias attempts to portray themselves as credible journalists in pursuit of the truth are laughably transparent. But the presence of Al Sharpton on the national news scene represents demonstrable proof not just of the unseriousness of the mainstream media, but of their vile race-baiting for ratings. So why are major advertisers like Ritz Crackers helping pay Sharpton's salary? In any rational world, Sharpton would certainly not have a primetime slot on MSNBC. From his Tawana Brawley hoax to his defense of Duke lacrosse accuser Crystal Mangum, from his fanning of racial flames during the Trayvon Martin incident to his involvement in the Crown Heights riots and the Freddie's Fashion Mart murders, Sharpton has a long history of inciting racial unrest and division. Hes done it for both the fame and the cash; he has a net worth in the millions. Meanwhile, his followers are still told that racist America wants to keep blacks from success.url="http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/sharptons-crackers"]http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/sharptons-crackers3 points

I've been working a CUSA TV package again this year. I have not been to all the CUSA stadiums (and I haven't worked at Apogee) but from what I've witnessed our stadium is on par or superior to every stadium in the conference. In a TV truck it makes a world of difference if the stadium is precabled. Apogee is precabled and I hear from crew members who've worked there say the experience is great. Currently I'm working Marshall @ FAU. This stadium is pretty new (albeit an erector set) and is pretty nice. When they built it, not only did they NOT spend the extra money to precable it they didn't even think about a tv broadcast. The press box is huge, but there is no preset tv booth. The Athletic Dept, basically converted a suite into the tv booth. The game cameras are situated on the 10 yard lines (horrible for coverage). I'm on a cheap show so no camera on a dolly for me. Television coverage was barely an afterthought when they built this thing. There are quite a few stadiums that are nice from a viewers perspective, but from a TV world, suck. The Independence Bowl comes to mind as does Rice's stadium. Other stadiums just blow. I'm looking at you Alabama Birmingham (now that I'm not looking at Fouts). I wish I was working at WKU. I hear it's nice. Left on my schedule this year of stadiums I've not worked are FIU (I hear bad things) Southern Miss (the NT game), and MTSU. I hope 2 out of 3 are nice. Thanks for letting me vent. Maybe next year I'll get to come to Denton. GO MEAN GREEN BEAT MTSU!!!!!!!!!!!3 points

Everything about this article is offensive. Completely ridiculous and I can't believe that our youth don't know the race baiter that this guy actually is. So disturbing.3 points

https://twitter.com/fussbudgets/status/388757322203267073/photo/1 Was out working the Alumni Pavilion today when I noticed staff putting up flags for all of our conference mates along the edges of the Wings. They look pretty good all a flutter. This post has been promoted to an article3 points

Since I'm gonna have twins and I'm a North Texas die hard I've decided to hold them to the same standard as North Texas athletics. 1)At least half the time I want them to pass math 2)Five out of every seven days each week I want them to respect their mother 3)If they're girls I want them to have, at maximum, two abusive boyfriends 4) After college I expect one of them to find a job2 points

I'm almost positive, they wouldn't start turning students away if those allocated student sections were full. We need more fans of any kind. It'd be really nice to just have a walk up crowd that has no affiliation whatsoever.2 points

Staying on the side of optimism...if you're a student trying to convince friends to come, be creative. I got some people who normally don't like sports to go to games by getting them to paint and/or dress up like crazy people. If you have friends into something, or that would be down just for dressing up as a joke, it's still helping attendance.2 points

Here's my 2 cents worth while I still have some memory. The attendance figure was 17,000 and I believe that as an independent we would have had to have that figure in 1983 if we appealed. As Silver stated, money was a factor but not debt. Dr. Hurley wanted to build the academics at North Texas at that time (and not spend money on athletics. The 1-AA route would require a far smaller expenditure for athletics and no stadium expansion and that was Dr. Hurley's recommendation. He admitted that he was doing athletics no favors. To his credit, he did improve academics at the university. The aluminum seats were not only the least expensive way to achieve the required seating capacity but it was also the quickest. With 30,000 seats we only had to meet the 17,000 figure one year; using the existing 20,000 capacity would have required us meeting that several years running (3?).2 points

Just got off the phone with Vito. We're gonna do an interview after the game on Sunday, to see how attendance turns out, and then talk about it that way, then go from there, a story possibly on Monday. We just kinda talked on the phone. We'll see. Really curious to see how attendance turns out.2 points

KRAM you are entirely missing the point. The people who complain care about the program and want it to improve. There are damn few of those people. People who take the time to post on here and complain about something are more than likely MGC members and season ticket holders. Why in the world would they do that if they wanted to portray UNT in the worst light? Maybe some people do have problems with RV, but let me let you in on a big secret: RV is not NT. People can be critical of him and still want the program to succeed. It's obvious to everyone you are a big fan of RV. Fine. That is your right and choice. It's also someones right, especially those that give to the program, to have a voice and complain about him if they don't believe he is the right person for the job.2 points

And had we expanded Fouts to 30k back when we were Indy, I'd like to believe we would be right there with the likes of Cincinnati, Louisville, Tulsa, Memphis(basketball?), etc. We had our chance to step up but did not seize the moment. And we lost a great deal of momentum.2 points

I saw the preview. Then again, I called and verified the correct place to see it.2 points

Money was certainly the reason for the decision, but I don't believe that debt was. Someone else can correct my post about this, but it's my understanding that the reason we went 1-AA was that the NCAA changed the rules in the late 70's-early 80's about minimum average home game attendance and stadium capacity for D-1 schools. The minimum stadium capacity was 30K, and I'm not sure about the minimum average home attendance. You were exempt about these rules if you were in a D-1 conference.....like SMU (in the SWC) was in those days. But North Texas was an independent. The administration was not willing to find the money to expand Fouts to the minimal size of 30K. So they made the decision to move down to 1-AA and joined the Southland Conf. It's my belief that we could have brought suit against the NCAA and thrown legal delays after legal delays at them until we had time to figure out a better plan. But historically the administration has never been committed to athletics enough to do such a thing. Even though we probably had staff attorneys who could have done such a thing without much problem. To give you additional information about the administrations attitude in those days. North Texas won the Southland conference in 1983 and was set to go into the 1-AA playoffs against Nevada. We had first choice about being the home team, but because the NCAA required a minimal commitment from the host school for 10,000 seats to be sold, we passed and let Nevada Reno be the home team. Our average attendance that year was 12,080. Two weeks before this decision we had won the SLC title decisively (27-7) over ULM even though we had been slight underdogs. AND THE GAME WAS CARRIED LOCALLY ON ABC. The very next week we finished up the season at home kicking the crap out of UTA 52-15. And still our administration was not willing to commit to guaranteeing 10K seats for a 1-AA playoff game? As a result we ended up playing in Reno with at least the last part of the game being in a snow and ice storm. Most people believe that we would have won by 2 tds in Denton, but we lost by a field goal in Reno.2 points

Now this kind of stuff seen on that poster gets my adrenalin flowing! I've even got my rain gear ready. HINT: For you who don't and if your Walmart has sold out of what you need, uh THIS............. a 39 gallon Hefty outside yard back with a hole cut at the top for your cranium will work just fine:. Question? Are they still saying "no umbrellas" inside Apogee? If so, some need to know that, especially all the newbies. So yes, we just have to reach out and touch someone to get all the new fans who we all know will love their "Apogee Experience" once we get them thru the turnstiles for their first visit. I believe we have the staff to make this all work, but I still think we need to make this a campus wide/alumnus wide project (or challenge) beginning with (I repeat).........the Office of the Presidency (Rawlins) and his BOR's. IMO, this is just how important this is for our entire school. GMG!1 point

But, by the aluminum stands surrounding Fouts indicate, they decided to do it the cheapest way possible? Question. No info. SSP, pay attention to these threads, and you will see why we are so beat down around here.1 point

William Cole was injured at OSU. (Off the field issues at UNT). Would have been a huge success here otherwise. We waste scholarships every year. Many go to walk-ons. Others go to Mac's friends kids. Most guys, with size, don't ever make it onto the field, let alone to Denton. You recruit the best player from a national program, period!. If he does not pan out, so what. See sentence above! How can he be a higher risk? You leverage this selection by signing another kid at the same position. Its done every year at every program; since the inception of sports. UNT benefits greatly with the signing of a local favorite than the guys we continue to bring in from Louisiana and other places. Recruit the best local players from North Texas! I'm sure Desmon will end up hosting more than his share of future Desoto prospects.1 point
