Students always get free admission. They pay for it through student athletic fees included when they pay their tuition. But, the good move is the promotion and the advertising of same to our students. Really nice move here. Hope it gets some traction with the students. Awareness helps...so would having little/no rain Saturday. One less excuse for not coming that way!4 points

The point is they don't sell beer to the masses, rehab is for quitters, the Volstead Act was repealed a long time ago, beer & football go together, and this is Murica! To hell with the standard operating procedures of SEC & Big XII no drinking light weights! George Washington & Sam Adams would agree. Good bless these United States!3 points

To me our A formation is so slow you could time it with a calender. Our Strength and Conditioning program has killed our speed running game. It's either that or Byrd and Jummerson are both hurt. They line up 8 yards deep and recieve the ball 5 yards deep and that is way too much time against a quick defense. Everytime I've watched the replay of that first half I've wanted to put my foot through the TV. Rick3 points

Then my question is if both are probably negligible, then why go through the whole exercise of selling beer and then having to potentially drunk, obnoxious fans ruining a good family experience? We already have enough that are stone sober! Seriously, I just don't see the added enticement of adding beer sales. Beer is usually as expensive as a 6 pack at your local store and I can never justify dropping that kind of cash on warm beer. Just my .02 cents.3 points

I believe the man said they were handing them out when you picked up your ticket for the game! As decent an indication of interest as there might be....nothing keeps one from picking up a towel at the stadium and the heading right back out to the hill. Six of one, half a dozen of another. First the bitch is, UNT never promotes it's games to its students, when they do, the bitch becomes they don't do it the right way! Only at North Texas.3 points
-
Nice deal, but the incentive should be for going to the game. Why not hand them out at the gate after the students enter the game?3 points
-
What? No! They can't be reaching out to the students....it's impossible. You mean they are promoting the game to the student body? Really? Sort of like other promos this season...sunglasses and all! OK, I know too easy...but, hey, this stuff is fun and really easy sometimes. I know it will "stick" a few who claim UNT "never" does this sort of thing, but it is important to note when the facts show that this sort of thing IS being done. Thanks for posting. Glad to see the reach out to the students...it being family weekend and all. Could it be possible, given decent weather, to see 20,000 plus at the game Saturday? Darn sure hope so...beat the MUTS!3 points

They have been set up in the library mall all week offering a 5 dollar mccalisters gift card when you get your student ticket as well.3 points

Money was certainly the reason for the decision, but I don't believe that debt was. Someone else can correct my post about this, but it's my understanding that the reason we went 1-AA was that the NCAA changed the rules in the late 70's-early 80's about minimum average home game attendance and stadium capacity for D-1 schools. The minimum stadium capacity was 30K, and I'm not sure about the minimum average home attendance. You were exempt about these rules if you were in a D-1 conference.....like SMU (in the SWC) was in those days. But North Texas was an independent. The administration was not willing to find the money to expand Fouts to the minimal size of 30K. So they made the decision to move down to 1-AA and joined the Southland Conf. It's my belief that we could have brought suit against the NCAA and thrown legal delays after legal delays at them until we had time to figure out a better plan. But historically the administration has never been committed to athletics enough to do such a thing. Even though we probably had staff attorneys who could have done such a thing without much problem. To give you additional information about the administrations attitude in those days. North Texas won the Southland conference in 1983 and was set to go into the 1-AA playoffs against Nevada. We had first choice about being the home team, but because the NCAA required a minimal commitment from the host school for 10,000 seats to be sold, we passed and let Nevada Reno be the home team. Our average attendance that year was 12,080. Two weeks before this decision we had won the SLC title decisively (27-7) over ULM even though we had been slight underdogs. AND THE GAME WAS CARRIED LOCALLY ON ABC. The very next week we finished up the season at home kicking the crap out of UTA 52-15. And still our administration was not willing to commit to guaranteeing 10K seats for a 1-AA playoff game? As a result we ended up playing in Reno with at least the last part of the game being in a snow and ice storm. Most people believe that we would have won by 2 tds in Denton, but we lost by a field goal in Reno.3 points

Snowy...that shot must have been early or late as there were many more on the press box side at the height of the event than what appears here. I was watching that closely as all the free food and auction stuff was on the other side and felt that would be where the majority sat. They did, but the press box side did have quite a few more than is reflected in your photo. Love the photo by the way. Shows how bright that new scoreboard can be. Can't wait to see the new floor. Thanks for posting the photo.3 points

I thought this was a 1st class event tonight! I was also was pleasantly shocked with the turnout. It was hell getting to and from Denton on I35 (from Dallas) but it was worth it Don't know what the men will do this year but it should be a more balanced team. I wish Tony Mitchell was still here but teams generally perform better without the focus and attention on one guy. I would not get too excited about a 15 minutes (running clock) scrimmage but there is promise. If we could compete with the other teams in CUSA in the dunk line, I like our chances. Other than that, we want know much about this team until conference time. Very pleased with the look of the women. We are not that tall but our girls are thick. They also have skills to beat most of the schools in CUSA. The success, or lack thereof, of this team will totally be on the shoulders of Mike Peterson. This may be the most talented group in a while. Scoreboard is really nice! Sound system is better but it didn't seem like they had the volume turned up. Recruit Jeremy Coombs seemed to have a good time as well as the Maverick's Jae Crowder Again, thumbs up on a good evening!3 points

Excellent crowd tonight! Very excited to see the turnout and excitement. This event was done very well and it came off very well. Even my wife, never prone to commenting on this sort of thing...one way or the other...commented as to how much fun it was and what a great crowd for the event. Food was good and free...pretty much a pig out for me...two hot dogs (grilled and courtesy of Wells Fargo), ice cream from Beth Marie's, sandwich (quarter) from Jimmy Johns, and Nachos from Los Torres (Ithink) and a diet coke...yep...all free! Step dancers and drum line were great... Teams each played a bit of scrimmage, then a three point contest and a dunk contest. Really enjoyed Flannigan and Walton. Flannigan won the slam dunk contest as well. Not much defense played as it was a scrimmage like last years. Jordan Williams looked, to me, ready to go as did CJ. Ladies are going to be fun to watch...on a side note I bought my first ever...ever...women's basketball season ticket today....ladies looked like they had spent some time in the weight room as well. Crowd looked bigger than several of the men's games crowds last season. Really good to see. Students, alums, families...yes, lots of kids out as well. Student Alumni Association auction had several really cool UNT union items...I went back to raise bids and found all the items I had bid on were purchased already by the "by it now" price! Bummer. But looked like the young alumni group had a good sale for their scholarship fund. Looking forward to hearing what the results actually were. Some really good UNT stuff! Saw lots of bidders, but you never know when it is time to "pay up" who returns. Anyway...really fun event for students, alums and families. I'll leave more of the player evaluations to those who are more experienced at such stuff. Hopefully, a few of you folks attended and can add details for us. Really glad I went...just to see the crowd and excitement if for no other reason. We'll see if the crowd holds and builds as the season goes along, but everyone should certainly be pleased with tonight's turnout. Well done event...lots of fun.3 points

Huff Post... what a reliable source. Ugh... Do I really have to? I'd be happy to dig them up for you, but do you really need them? Do you think all those reporters had a change of heart in 2012? And if they did, (they didn't what would that tell us about their stance on our current administration? AND- I don't trust anyone that doesn't like Journey. And being that we live in the time after the "Citizens United"... I tend to stay away from bars with juke-boxes... OR bars that play Bon Jovi. I don't appreciate implications that I'm a tool. I think your age is showing. Laurie needs to stop slacking.3 points

The Democratic Party received a total donation of $1,020,816, given by 1,160 employees of the three major broadcast television networks (NBC, CBS, ABC), while the Republican Party received only $142,863 via 193 donation in the 2008 elections... Rupert Murdoch, the CEO of News Corporation (the parent of Fox News), is a libertarian, btw. CNN, ABC , CBS AND NBC have become a little more than just liberal front groups in their selective reporting. (ie, Wendy Davis, Zimmerman, etc.) If you lean more to the right, you are obviously going to believe that little boy (Fox). It's obvious that those other kids are only in it for the delusion of candy that someone promised them.3 points

Just got off the phone with Vito. We're gonna do an interview after the game on Sunday, to see how attendance turns out, and then talk about it that way, then go from there, a story possibly on Monday. We just kinda talked on the phone. We'll see. Really curious to see how attendance turns out.2 points

If we ever do get a first half lead, will we go conservative and allow a team to catch up? I can see us losing a game the opposite way also. Come out balanced and upredictable, get a lead, then go conservative and predictable and allow a team to come back and beat us. I hope not, but this is not a creative and agressive coaching staff.2 points

Why would anyone want to go and watch the longhorn slaughter at a dump in the middle of a cesspool?2 points

Good memory, Silver. Here is something that some might have missed. In the late 80's the wonderful NCAA let it be known that they were going to do away with the 1-AA football classification. So, if you wanted to continue with football you either went up in classification and requirements or you went down to division II. As it turns out this never happened, as the classification of 1-AA became FCS. Anyway, it was great for us because it caused the administration to make the decision to go up or down in classification. Since they did not want the wrath of the alumni base by going down to Div.2, they decided to expand the stadium and move back up in classification to meet the D1 standards. Had this not occurred we might still be in 1-AA pergatory, since Hurley and the boys seemed quite content to let us stay in the Southland, etc.2 points

I get what you are saying, and this has been a gripe about d.t. for a while. But I do not think that quarterback play is killing us. He has excellent numbers so far this year. Why look off the primary receiver if the primary receiver is open? Isn't that what a well designed play does? I want to lean over and say in the first half, "Son of a bitch, we ran play action on first down and hit a seam route to a tight end right down the middle of the field, and it worked because the strong safety and the linebackers were cheating up expecting us run!" It has definitely been mind boggling this year that you can sit in the bleachers and watch and know exactly what is going on, yet we continue to just run the damned ball.2 points

Anyone who claims to be a UNT fan and then goes to the OU-TX game or stays home to watch that game (or any other for that matter) is really not a UNT fan. No fan goes to another school's game and bypasses their own game given that they are in the proximity of the game. Not talking about those in distant areas...mainly focusing on the DFW area and surrounding counties. Talk about the definition of a fair weather fan (no pun intended)... That would be the classic example. Now, would folks with no real connection with either of the schools and just looking for a college game to attend..well, that's a different matter, and the OU-TX game could win out in that case...if they could get a ticket of course and wanted to fight the game and fair traffic.2 points

Actually, that's 355U. For proper reference, 356C is the ideal color and reference point color. It's also the mandate color green on coated dull and gloss paper. For uncoated paper, 355U can be used if the paper will yield a darker color (like 357C) if 356U or 356C were to be used.2 points

Not to dig up the dead, but it seems I keep hearing about our terrible OCC home schedule...did yesterday and today again...as a justification for not coming and/or not buying season tickets. Has anyone compared the home OCC schedules over the last few years? I took a quick look-see for a few years late in JJ's career at UNT and here's what we had: 2009-10 Season - Don't see a lot of big name draws here Cameron Jackson State Univ. of the Southwest Southwestern Texas Southern 2010-2011 Season - 2 out of six...not bad...enough? Henderson State Texas Tech - one of the more fun games in recent memory to attend UTA - always a goodie Granbling State Jackson State Texas State Oklahoma Panhandle State 2011-2012 Season - 1 maybe 2 OK as far as "sellers"...the rest? St. Gregory Sam Houston State Jackson State Grambling LSU - another very bright spot for sure New Orleans I also recall playing and beating OSU at the Super Pit. I also recall some of the same folks "walking" on this year's home OCC schedule making similar comments about JJ's home OCC. scheduling.2 points
