Hey coach, how about giving your faithful fans a little help? We all try to get people interested and bring them to games. Guess what? Alumni who are very casual fans won't come if you don't win. I know. I've tried. A lot. At my own expense. As a matter of fact, I'm trying again this weekend. So kindly get off my ass and do your part. Win some F'n football games.11 points

I'm planning on working with some organizations on campus (meeting with them soon) for a student attendance campaign I'm titling "Busting North Texas Football Myths" and likely some other similar ones that I'm going to try to distribute to campus in between classes, in all the dorms, and all bulletin boards. The point behind it is methodically dismantling every football myth that students have about our football team in an effort to get students interested. I'm gonna make a bunch of different posters so I need as many Busted Myths as y'all can come up with. I have a few, but would love suggestions. I'm also planning on putting #hit30K on all the posters so whoever came up with that let me know if you don't want me to.10 points

How's this for cute Mark. I just called and double checked (you know, because clearly this was a typo). Yep, trick or treat event sponsored by NT Athletics on October 30. Now, please, spin more of your yarns about misplaced blame. Or maybe reading comprehension, I always enjoy those.8 points

But seriously, if you are going to always give up at the first sign of idiots trying to derail you, you will never get anything done.7 points

...somehow when you were the one in here telling those of us who have suffered along with this program for decades that we were being fools for not accepting your prediction of a 9-3 season and that Tulane was a push over, coming into yet another thread acting flippant is pretty damned silly. Bottom line, we have NO ROOM to act like we are better than ANY PROGRAM until we prove that we are. We play Louisiana Tech THERE. ...and based on the road record posted above, there is NO GUARANTEE we win that game. ...or even this week at MTSU. There is little to no consistency. Stupid penalties. A QB who is trying hard but just can't get it done, a defensive secondary who gives up the good plays. I challenge you other than the fact that the little pennant on our jerseys now says C-USA instead of SUNBELT who ANY of what I just listed above is different than it was through virtually the entire Dodge era. Replace Derrick with Riley and list everything I just did, and you're watching a Dodge football team. ...and UNTIL we PROVE otherwise, I'll root and be a fan and have my hopes rise and fall with the fortunes of our team, but I'll be damned if I'm going to have anyone come in here and tell me that we're better than ANY program that we haven't yet beaten. Welcome to North Texas football, THIS is how it has been for DECADES, and until there is track record that those days are behind us, why don't you quit taking down to people who are being cautious? Thanks.7 points

I'd like to agree with Mac, but you know what? I show up to every game so do most of us on here, but don't ask for our fans to show up unless you are winning. Sorry, but don't call a lame ass, overly conservative, not trying to win gameplan for the first half of a game against Tulane, and then tell fans they need to show up for us to win. Show us you are willing to win all games at all costs. Then ask those that are fringe fans to show up. I don't serve good food 1/2 of the time then ask people to come to my restaurant. Sorry. Just tired of hearing them asking for support. Freakin earn it.7 points

I do graphic design. The posters need some work. Please PM me and I'll help out.6 points

You clearly don't have an eighteen year old family member on the team feeding you exciting information.6 points

Okay, if we are not going to take it seriously then don't even bother. At least I'm trying to get something done. Also, going to make a twitter profile for this soon. Stay updated. Goal is to get one sellout, at least with students.5 points

So the AD is openly inviting people not to come on Thursday. It's an interesting plan of action for sure.5 points

It's too bad that now coach does what we hear from RV sometimes, and that's berating the best fans we have about coming to games. I've heard RV do this as well at special events like the CUSA announcement, where he starts telling us that the excuses are over and we need to support our team. This to the small hardcore group of fans that do support the team. It always struck me as weird. And if Coach Mac thinks anyone is listening to the coaches show that doesn't already go to games, he's incorrect. He's right and RV are right though, need to figure out a way to get alumni, and students to come to games. But that's not our job as fans, that's his and the school's job. Not saying it's easy, and I think they've done some things well by connecting with them students, but not losing to terrible Tulane would help. Also, any kind of promotion on campus would help.5 points

The people listening to what he is saying on a weekly coaches show are not the people to be begging to attend. It's the people not listening that need coach Mac and the team to make them sit up and pay attention by winning. I bring as many people as I can that I think would enjoy the game. Factors to the enjoyment of the game for a non coaches show listener: - A blow out win for NT - A close win for NT - A competitive game between NT and a recognizable opponent - Good weather (100+ deg is miserable for a lot of non die hards, I left a TCU game early this year - It was easy- they were playing like crap against a d1aa school, it was hot and uninteresting.) - Friends at the game5 points

Right. Because the onus should be on the fans to double check their work rather than on the athletic department to avoid misinforming the fans. What of the parents who aren't motivated enough to double check and just say "screw it, we won't go"? That's their fault I'm assuming. Is the AD ever responsible for a mistake?5 points

So obviously these are a little fancy so what I'm planning on doing is making an equal number of both and posting them all throughout the buildings on campus and surrounding places that'll let me. Then I'm going to make some lower quality flyers with just text mainly with debunked myths that I'm going to hand out on campus and see if I can get RHA to pass out at the residence halls. I'm also gonna make one with Uncle Sam that says "UNT NEEDS YOU TO BE AT APOGEE" and put that on all the bulletin boards. Also, I'm about to make a Twitter @hit30k in which I post updates on what we're doing, debunked myths and all the like so keep them coming! This post has been promoted to an article4 points

Just as an FYI... Mark is completely correct. Athletics would have loved to have Boo Bash the night of the game, but those who put on the annual event had concerns about several things related to game day activities. Thus, the organizers (not athletics) chose to have it the 30th like they always have. There are so many times I read things on this board that are completely wrong and presumed simply because you just don't know what's happening internally. I wish I was able to shed light each time, but most of the time I'm not at liberty to divulge such things. Know that most of us on staff have great intentions and reasons behind every decision that is made, even if it seems like we didn't consider everything you all bring up. Believe me, they do, but sometimes things just have to happen a certain way and there's no way around it.4 points

I love Fly Like an Eagle, it's pretty much our second fight song. I also love the first down one. Hey Baby is fun for the students. I hate the lack of a pregame show.4 points

People who make excuses for not coming will continue to make excuses. I'm more concerned about student attendance than alumni numbers. While there are obviously a great bunch of people that graduated that are great program supporters, there are an inordinate number of apathetic people that root fully for Big 12 schools and only will ever give a passing glance our way when it is cool to do so. I'm sure you know one or two in your circle.4 points

NT plays "big time" college football. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "They're on the same level as (insert power conference school)??". Ok, so maybe we're not on the same level financially, budget wise, or recruiting, but we are a FBS school.3 points

Minimum is: Per seat, one-time gift of $3125 Per seat, $350 season ticket price Per account, annual $500 MGM donation. So, for two tickets, it's $1,200 a year plus a one-time gift of $6,250.3 points

We'll have 6 in our group. What worries me are the fans that think that cheering against our team will help. The behavior from a group of fans sitting behind us was really embarrassing during the Ball State game. I have never figured out how yelling for the coaches to get fired or for DT to get benched inspires the team to improve. I get being passionate, but they should have sat in the Ball State section if all they were doing was yelling against our team. When we came back and won...radio silence from them. Didn't hear a peep of Good Job Mac, or "Great Game DT"... They made the experience for fans around them extremely uncomfortable. If I were a casual fan, I don't think I would like to come back to that environment. My 9 year old son couldn't figure out why they were cheering against UNT wearing green gear. Hopefully every play is played to perfection, there are zero incompletions, and every single tackle is made on Saturday to keep them cheering in a positive way.3 points

We always lose at home is myth #1. Worst college team in Texas. #2. We've never been good. #3 CUSA isn't "big time" football. #4. That's all I have for the moment.3 points

What exactly are you looking for? You said you have some examples, but wanted more from us... show us what you have, and maybe we can see the avenue you're wanting to take. Otherwise, it's all jokes to hide the pain inside.3 points

Should have known Teapot Benny was behind this whole screwup. Has anyone called to see if the soccer team is hosting a Haloween event on the 29th?3 points
-
Bottom line for the casual fan. You've got to make it a fun experience. Making it feel more like post 9/11 air travel with no in/out, no beer, grumpy fans who publish public slut shaming photos of wrong colors or shades, overzealous ushers, and 21 point deficits in the first ten minutes of play just don't do much for people looking to sit three stories up in the wing zone. I mean, have you ever climbed to the top of that thing? My calves were sore for two days after that! So, some of these things, the veteran fans can help with, some of these the AD can help with, and others, the players and coaches could help with by, you know, trying to score once or so every few weeks.3 points

Of course. Because giving parents a heads up about a Halloween event prior to 20 days out would be crazy, huh? I know that every parent I knkw avoids making their trick or treat plans until the last minute. Oh, wait, they don't. But let's assume that secod flyer is forthcoming. I'm sure they just didn't want to take the spotlight off of all the promotions for the MUTS game...which is, what again? Oh I'm sure that I could find out that one with a phone call too, right Mark? After all, when I'm done writing bigger checks, bitching less and giving more, I should also be hunting down promotions info on my own time.3 points

Well, I called...got the scoop. Here's the deal. This is a Campus-wide event...it has been hosted at the Student Union for some time, but the Student Union is closed. It was going to be cancelled due to the Union's closing. When Coach Benford and Coach Peterson heard that, they volunteered the use of the Super Pit and that the Athletic Department should sponsor the event. The department agreed and thus the Oct. 30th date. It is a campus-wide event...more folks than just the Jr. Mean Green Club got the notice. There WILL be athletic dept. Sponsored events for kids the night of Oct. 31st for the game. Something about using the north end zone area or something like that...don't have those details as I was too interested in clearing up the misconception here that the AD MUST have screwed up. So, call it what you want, but seems to me the AD stepped up after learning that a campus wide event that has taken place inferior years was to be cancelled. Nice of Coach Benford and Coach Peterson to lead the charge...one or both could probably use the Super Pit for practice that day. Stand by for info on the kid-friendly events taking place in relation to the game on the 31st.....now, about that GMG.com sponsored tailgate trick or treat thing. Amazing what a difference in perspective it becomes when one gets a few of the details sometimes. Cute, huh?3 points

All of these new things are nice and needed but do not solve my biggest issue with the pit... moving the media section to the floor where it is supposed to be. Dozens of prime season ticket seats have been wasted for years. I hate seeing all the panoramic pictures of big crowds at the super pit with that giant eyesore in the middle of it. There is more than enough room to build a double deck of media rows that would not block anyone's view (just like the other side) and if needed, just move the team benches a few feet down like every nba team has done. I'll gladly offer to purchase the first available tickets in that section if it ever opens. Thankfully, this issue will give us all something new to complain about after the latest upgrades are finished. You're welcome and I have promoted my post to an article.3 points

The seniors have to be exhausted. They've been working so hard for 3+ years to turn this thing around, and some of these old ghosts just won't go away. Tough tough loss, but this season isn't over.3 points

My daughter is in the Jr Mean Green Club and they are doing a trick or treat event for the kids. On October 30th. A day before the game.2 points

I actually think Emmitt typoed what he heard from his confirmation call. I'm going to call him to check and make sure he didn't misunderstand what the ticket office told him.2 points

Coming into the MTSU game with a winning record would have helped attendance. I guess those fans that don't show up are probably the same people who torpedoed the Tulane game by having an awful first half game plan.2 points

It would serve us right for him not to get it. If this is truly the path they're going down then playing him week one was just about the stupidest thing Mac could have done.2 points

I like Mac's stance that support of the program is a "partnership" but I wonder if (outside of winning) a more effective appeal would be to ask fans/alumni to "partner with the staff in supporting these young men who give of themselves to represent YOUR alma mater in a public medium that you can't yourself..."2 points
-
I don't find it ironic at all. When two schools from the same conference go after the same guys, you have to assume it's for good reason. And even though UNT has good academics, and is great at pushing the athletes to prepare for a career, Tulane is one of the better non-Ivy League schools academically. Even if the players were leaning towards North Texas as their choice, I would bet that the parents put a bit of pressure on not only staying closer to home but also getting a Tulane education. We have a wonderful campus, atmosphere, location, and history with a lot of nationally ranked programs. But Tulane has one of the best academic reputations in FBS. I think we can win some of the recruitment battles against them if a player wants to major in one of our highly ranked programs, but you have to give credit where credit is due and realize that Rice and Tulane are going to offer pretty stiff competition in the region for recruiting those who can make the grades as well as the plays.2 points

Nope. And if it's a misprint you have an entire Jr Mean green club full of kids thinking they're supposed to show up on the 30th2 points

Ugh. This is fascinating to me. Not only is it not on game night, but on a Wednesday evening. The night where a lot of kids have church events. Oh... and just what every parent wants... going to be out late on Thursday (school) night already. Let's drag the kids out Wednesday night too. Brilliant.2 points

What other schools in Texas are you referring to because comparing North Texas to schools in other states in not an apples to apples comparison.2 points

The players that George and others interviewed, Trice and Y'Barbo...good dudes. Represent our school well. Coach, it is hard not to like what you are throwing down. I wouldn't trade this coaches show for any other NT coaches I have gotten to hear (caveat: never heard Fry). I trust it will translate into W's...and in my world, it already has. Save your smack about how coaches shows don't mean nothing on Saturdays. Otherwise, flame away, my vitriolic pals. GMG BTW, I truly admire he/she who vents on Saturday night, and then embraces the future, like next Saturday. Said it to my son/daughter on the walk to the FQ...I always felt better about Middle than Tulane. Any game that everyone says we will win, especially a road game, is a game I fear.2 points

No doubt. Losing is losing. It did make me chuckle when he said it. Coach Mac was definitely putting off the vibe of being pissed. Would not be surprised to hear of tough week of practice. I really want him to figure it out. I like the staff, and really like a lot about our players this year and the effort they show. I like that we are getting deep in game on the road with a chance to win. Need to get over the hump. Ready for some W's.2 points

Too bad Manu (??) didn't fit under the extreme family hardship waiver. For those of you that think these things are automatic, there is a recent example for you.2 points

Coach Mac had a shoutout to a couple of our posters. For a second there I thought he was going to refer to them by name. "If you can't see the improvement that has happened to this program over the last 3 years, either your eyes are closed or you are just stupid". Pretty sure that is a direct quote. If not, it is pretty close.2 points
