  1. I know that I often harp on the abhorrent promotions work done by our athletic department and I am often challenged by the premise that there is 1)Simply not enough budget or 2)Just too much work in our athletic department for our promotions staff to tend to little things like promoting a game. Also, since many seem to ask "do you think you could do better?" and WE ALL KNOW that our athletic department reads this board (though they'd claim otherwise) here is what I would do if I were drawing a paycheck to promote our games. And every one of these ideas costs a grand total of willingness to get off your ass. They can feel free to steal the ideas. For the MUTS game on Oct. 12th: Buy one get one free wingzone tickets. or $5 wingzone tickets with a limit of 3 or 4 or Since this is "Family Weekend" give every student that goes to pick up their ticket prior to Thursday of the game week a voucher for a discounted general admission ticket. Reward student initiative to commit to attendance and make it more enticing for a parent to buy a ticket. For the Rice game on Halloween night: One of two promotions angles. 1) Tailgate or Treat Use the email lists that are constantly used to reach MGC members and season ticket holders to poll ticket buyers about whether they plan to tailgate that day and how early they plan to arrive. Also, get with the fraternitites/sororities and RHA to see how many student groups will be tailgating that day. If you have a large enough tailgating crowd ask each group who will have a tailgate to place a large bowl of candy out in front of their tailgating setup. Also, ask each tailgate to decorate their tents in a Halloween theme and send AD staff around to judge. Then, announce the winners at halftime of the game and have them come down to the field to be recognized. Get with Vito and ask him to include in his articles about the game that if parents will bring their kids out before the game they can "tailgate or treat" by walking amongst the tailgate setups on and around the hill. Or, if you won't have enough pre-game tailgaters or feel that parents won't get there kids their early enough. 2) Haunted Apogee Decorate Apogee in a Halloween theme. Put spider webs on the railing inside the stadium. Place a jack-o-lantern at each entry gate. Get some dry ice and make fog in the walkways. Play "Thriller" and other Halloween themed music during pre-game and timeouts. Set up trick or treating stations at the concession stands and outside of the spirit shops. Have a costume contest for the kids and announce winners at half time. Let the kids who come in costume do a spirit line to welcome the team back onto the field after halftime. Again, use Vito for free advertising. Ask him to work this into his blog and articles about the game during the week leading up. Or, do some hybrid of both ideas. And you know, you could always distribute flyers at the local schools for the kids to take home. I guess the other option is to continue letting home games "sell themselves".

  2. You know, I realize that Lembo didn't make excuses for the loss, nor did most of the BSU players, but the facts are that they got out-hit, out-hustled, and physically beaten for most of the game, and the entire second half. Those are the facts. UNT dominated them physically, and went out and made plays and took the game away from them. It is as simple as that.

  12. Hey guys, I'm Tim Cato, the sports editor for the Daily this semester. I just wanted to let you guys know that we have a new section for blogs this year...here's the one I wrote from this weekend. I don't know how much you guys keep up with us (probably not too much), but if you're interested, now you know. They're more geared towards hardcore Mean Green fans than most of the stuff we do. Anyway, I'm not here to link spam my stuff...I feel awkward enough posting this. A one-time PSA like this should do it from me. Thanks.

  13. I know we are as of today 32.5 point underdogs. I know that the SEC is the "cream of the crop" when it comes to teams and conferences. I know that it is going to take a super human effort to beat Georgia and for us to play better than we did in the 2nd half of the Ball St game to beat the Southern Bells. I know that DT, Chancellor, ZORR and the entire team must wear a BIG S on our chest. But to say that this is going to be not much more than an inner squad scrimmage.... If I were going to pick a team for a major upset, I would pick the MEAN GREEN. HIT 6...AND HIT A DAWG RIGHT IN THE MOUTH!!!!

  16. Zombie Apocalypse at Apogee Have the students dress up as zombies. It cost nothing. Just post some flyers and/or send the students an email. Students who don't even care about football would show up just for the craziness. Plus a bunch of screaming zombie in the stand after a score would make for some great TV .

  27. This can be a great thing for everyone involved if it is done right. Denton needs this, and UNT is in a good spot to take advantage and showcase the university. However, it is important that UNT and Denton carefully move forward with this and refuse to concede to the demands of the developer. We must keep our interests as the priority. Also, I'm not too aware of this developer. Like we did with the stadium (HKS), we should find a leader in the industry to facilitate this project. Hate to lose the Hill, but too many other positives. Nice Hotels in Denton, but nothing like this. Currently, Denton doesn't have a venue to host SMALL events and conventions. It's a need for a community this size already and growing.

  29. tcat75: GMG.com posters are a plethora of totally useful Mean Green information and data, although some of our posters tend to get a bit long-winded with some of their manifestos and epistles. GMG! PS: I remember when longtime Dallas Morning News sportswriter David Moore had the NT Daily Sports Editor role. A suggestion: GMG.com poster Gray Eagle has watched North Texas football since our football stadium was located where the Willis Library now stands. He is an active poster even now. He'd be a great feature story in your sports section at some point in time and I hope he doesn't mind me saying it.

  32. I still don't know why NT thinks they have to be the gender equity champion of the land. Adding 11 baseball ships is not going to change anything. Add sand VB if you have to, being it uses the same players as the 6 player game it should cost next to nothing. I really fear if they add baseball and an equivalent number of girls ships, that it is going to be felt in the other sports.

  34. These ideas are decent, but the fact that it is on a Thursday and parents have to go to work and kids have to go to school, it does not seem it would get much results. Maybe a few 100 to 1000. There are enough current students to fill apogee. That is where they are dropping the ball. depending on the community is only a short term solution. They will come and go depending on the success of the team. Die hard fans are fans that are connected to unt win or lose. I am 43, and I brought my wife and kids to the game and tailgate. Had a good time, and never had to worry about my kids seeing or hearing something I would have to explain. Worked out good for me. Sort of like a baseball or high school sports event. Only problem is...ITS A COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME!!!!! Its supposed to be rowdy. Only section should be family friendly should be the one with the old alumni. Trying to make a college football game family friendly is kinda lame. The 20 year old me would crack up laughing at the current me. And I didnt even drink when I was 20. I would think little kids running around in costumes would drive students AWAY. Some people grow up and forget this is still college. promote the party, national TV at night, unleash the beer, and the students will come. No school on Friday. Turn this thing into a college atmosphere. The drawback, is a lot more money will have to be spent on security and cops.

  42. The interesting thing there is look at their offensive line and look at ours. We average right at 6'4" and 303 They average right at 6'4" and 303 If Mac's done anything, he has given us a legit, D1 offensive line. And the results have obviously shown.
