I went to the scrimmage yesterday and was not impressed at all with Derek Thompson's play. He never threw a tight spiral, his arm strength was poor and his accuracy is on par with a high school QB. I don't know what the coach saw but hopefully once he goes over the film he will come up with a true #1. Dajon looked very good with a strong arm, good accuracy and super mobile. He is young and has tons of room to grow and needs to get better at handling the snaps because he fumbled a bunch of snaps during the scrimmage. Brock I thought stood out more than anyone. He has a strong arm and can run the ball so I am definitely drinking the Berglund Koolaid.5 points

I have also wondered about Chico. We have young men at QB that seem to have not developed that much under the tutelage of Coach Canales. The offense also saw a boost after the Dodge firing under the direction of OC Conroy Hines who, coincidentally enough, was called on to run drills at the Friday Night Lights event in the absence of another coach.4 points

I've seen Canales when he had the reins at the end of the Todd Dodge "take a huge steaming dump on NT football era". Canales was inovative, exciting and worth watching. Lock the Gate had us all pumped. Are you honestly telling me that the same man is now purposely euthanizing our offense and rolling out that mess we saw last year? I pay attention too, and I aint buying it.4 points

I think this is more a credit to DT and the good and bad of Coach Mac. It is obvious that Coach does not play guys when they make mistakes. To NT03's point Jimmerson was terrible on pass protection. In one of the Vito videos this year Mac mentioned that Jimmerson was doing a lot better in pass protection this year. So basically the reason we didn't see Jimmerson more was because he had a more glaring weakness in his game. Same goes for DT, he isn't super accurate but he generally doesn't lose games for you. Think Trent Dilfer with the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl. Nothing flashy, midling QB. But didn't blow games. UNT90 like to mention this all the time about the WKU game last year. DT made a huge mistake and they didn't give him another chance to lose it. Unfortunately for us, the defense couldn't win it. Coach Mac is as conservative as Dickey. He hates mistakes and doesn't want the possibility of Jimmerson, or BB coming in making two or three bad plays early put him down by 21 because the game will be mostly over at that point. He prefers to lose slowly if he loses. So while we would mostly all prefer to see they guy capable of making something happen, they'll only get their chance when they are able to not make major mistakes. It's basically how Mac took a 2 win team to 5 in his first year. He just made us more disciplined. He ain't going to change. From what I saw in the spring game, BB was faster, had a better arm, and more skills than DT but he blew the one time he had a wide open guy on a long pass, and had a lot of quick 3 and outs. SO while it was tantalizing, it was less effective than DT. Until that changes, the risk is too much for Mac too take.4 points

Very simple-- DT gives us the best opportunity to win. That's all any coach will tell you he can do! For all the ducks, etc. that many of you choose to thrive on , remember that someone has to be under center against UGA. Can you see Berglund, McNulty ,or even Williams in that environment? DT having played against LSU and KSU will not be fazed, and he will have receivers who can run their routes unlike after Brelan went down at MTSU. I have been saying since spring the team believes in him and the coaches believe in him. Get over it he is our QB, he won the competition. I'm sure he'll have a short leash, but I've seen a true frosh QB start at NT in Kenny Washington of Port Authur Lincoln under Coach Fry. It was not pretty no offense at all and we lost to pre death penalty SMU 7-6. Idaho is not Notre Dame, we will be fine with DT. Personally I do not fear the MAC like so many on this board. Stolich may be a better coach, but he beat a Monroe team that was very rusty after they foolishly sent their players home at winter break. I also recall Ball State was defeated in their bowl game. If the team and QB I saw at KSU shows up we will be just fine for the season. DT has done it before and gives us THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO WIN until someone proves otherwise.4 points

I find it hard to believe that after 8 or so full contact practice/scrimmages that they have finalized their game scenario starters? Seems a bit early with 14 days left till kickoff to be doing that? But at this point all I care about is how the battle for defensive tackles and ends are shaping up? Rick4 points

After arriving back in town late, I must admit that I thought twice about it when the alarm rang at 8:30am. After some DD coffee it was on and I too was thrilled how receptive everyone was today. I knew it was going to be a great day when I got the "thumbs up," "sure," and "go right ahead!" on my first three stops. Add in the weather (can I order some of this up for August 31st) and complimentary adult beverage giveaway and it was perfect! My drop goals were accomplished by noon and I wandered around the Square falling in awe of Denton all over again. I circled the same area as last year which was nice because I used the "last year we placed a poster in that window..." card. I didn't get one rejection and the one guy at the pizza joint in the square who balked was cut off by a fan at the bar who asked if he could get one of those. Even the ladies in Supercuts who were busy just directed me to the Community Board. Businesses I placed either posters or magnet schedules in were: Jefferson Dental Clinic, Dollar General, Dry Cleaner, Natural Nails, Supercuts, NY Subway, Subway (break room), Roys Laundromat, North Texas Laundromat, EZ Check, O'Reilly (break room), Family Dollar and Labb sports bar. Fun stuff. Thank you for organizing this ritual event. GMG4 points

Thanks to greenjoe for setting this up for us...had a great time chatting before heading out on my "appointed rounds", but also had great reception everywhere I went to deliver a poster or two or three! This is the first time that I can say that EVERYONE was receptive! Unfortunately only a few brave souls ventured out to help this morning...a big thank you those who did...you are making a positive difference. Thanks to: Our fearless leader greenjoe for setting this all up; Christopher Walker - who had the Alumni pavilion opened for us this morning with the big fans going and even some "beverages"; rsw69 who volunteered to work the Flower Mound area and who has really started volunteering for so many of these activities; oldguystudent - who volunteered to work the Lewisville area (my guess is that will will now see UNT Football posters at Hooter's, Red Neck Heaven, Twin Peaks; and NMGreen who worked the event last year as well while home on vacation from out of state...which I think happened again this year as well. So, to the few who ventured out on a Saturday morning to help, you definitely embody the ACTA NON VERBA "can do" spirit. Folks, it really is a fun activity and you get to talk to a lot of folks about UNT football. Heck, greenjoe also brought UNT plastic glasses for us to hand out. At one place (mellow Mushroom) where I delivered a poster, I had employees coming up to me while I was taping the poster to the window and ask if they could have a glass! One said, "always love to support my school"! At another establishment (Weinberger's Deli, I was greeted with "put as many up as you would like and thank you!". they were thanking me? Wow! And at Oak Street Draft House and Social Club (did I get that all correct?) they asked for a second poster so they could get it laminated to display outside in the beer garden as well as the one I put up inside! The above are not the only places agreeing to a poster, just some of the more enthusiastic responses I received. Also put posters up at Fuzzy's Taco, Burgessa Burger and Unique Barbers. Found posters already up at many other places such as Barefoot, Rooster's, Sweetwater, Rusty Taco and several others. Seems the athletic department folks had done an earlier job in getting these up...at least in the area I was working this morning! If you think the attitude of merchants around town is not changing for the better in terms of UNT and UNT athletics then you need to volunteer to help with this project next year and see for yourself. This is proof positive that things are moving in a positive direction and that UNT is, in fact, engaging the local merchants and more and more merchants see the benefit in supporting UNT. Night and day difference this year in my reception at the Mellow Mushroom than I got last year for the same project! Just one example. And, some folks wonder why i stay so positive about UNT. Get out and go around with me sometime and I'll show you why! ACTA NON VERBA folks...Acta Non VERBA! Thanks greenjoe...well worth the time and effort made by this member of the Mean Green Nation this morning!4 points

Last year it was not just conservative play that bothered me it was the lack of execution, throws ten feet over receivers, dropped balls, missed blocks and on and on.3 points

I need more than a few shots! And they better be strong. I mean I was burned out last year, this year I was hoping I would see things coming together but I have no confidence in Mike Canales going into his 4th year. The AD seems to shoot themselves in the foot every time they make a good move. And I am starting to waiver on Coach DMac. CUSA seems more and more like the second coming of the Sun Belt. Almost all the teams I was interested in being in a conference with are gone or leaving. Plus they are bringing the likes of UTSA which just weakens the conference more. It also puts us in a no win situation, we are expected to win against teams like UTSA so when we win there is no real credit and if we lose it is just embarrassing. The one step forward one step back our AD is doing is likely to allow UTSA to leave us in the dust. RV has lead us to 9 losing seasons out of the 12 he has been here WTF is that? We should give him an extension, oh wait we did. Who did that math? By the way to break our current record setting losing steak we need a 7-5 season, 6-6 is thrown in as a non wining season. I am hoping the Defense shows us the way, well at this point is my only real hope. Maybe it is blackest before dawn and lighting will strike again. I Hope!! Tailgating is the thing keeping me going and this year is not scheduled well for that with only two 6:00 Saturday games, one on Labor Day and one on Texas-OU weekend which will hurt tailgating in both cases. Thank God for tequila3 points

Four conference championships mattered to me. I am probably the worse critic of Dickey, but I do get tired of people that continue to downgrade what those teams accomplished. NT never had anything close to the conference win streak from 2001 to 2004, in any classification and few teams have. And no the cause of the downfall of Dickey was not that that the Belt teams got a little better, NT got a lot worse. Dickey rode one exceptional recruiting class for all they were worth, then waited for the next opportunity somewhere else and not much more.3 points

One thing to take into account is that CUSA has some very strong offenses and some of the worst defenses in the country. Sure Marshall's QB is great, but their defense gave up over 60 points twice last year, over 50 points 5 times, and over 40 points 7 times. We have to play strong defense which we are capable of, run the ball which we are also capable of, be efficient in the passing game which we haven't shown consistency at, and play good special teams which is by far the most unreliable and scary aspect of our game.3 points

in one sense I don't mean to be bashing DT. He'll do the best he can and no one can ask for more. He won't fumble away games and I don't question his leadership. But, we know what we'll get and the talent, especially at quarterback, is greater in CUSA than it was in the Belt, where our maximum win total was five. Maybe I'm just more disappointed that Berglund hasn't stepped up. Did he not have the talent that the recruiting analysts and the Kansas and other coaching staffs, including our own, missed? Were the reports of his play on the scout team inflated? Has the hamstring not healed? Inquiring minds want to know. Dajon Williams apparently has the talent to be our quarterback of the future but it would be a lot to ask a true freshman to carry a team with only a few weeks of learning and adjustment. I'd like to see him have a redshirt year to get up to speed and have another year of eligibility after the current group leaves. I have no problem with DT being the opening day starter. He's earned that. On the other hand if he's not as successful as he needs to be that the staff will not be hesitant to try something new. Maybe that will be the case and this is mostly smoke and mirrors to take the pressure off of another starter. Time will tell. This is a good coaching staff and I'm hoping that they will do whatever it takes to get us in the win column. I am behind our quarterback, whomever it may be. I'll be there as long as I'm physically able. But, we need to attract new fans by putting a winning product on the field and that hasn't happened so far with Derek Thompson.3 points

You know what keeps me going? North Texas. Not the current AD of North Texas. Not the current QB at North Texas. Not the conference affiliation of North Texas. Definitely not the current promotions department of North Texas! As long as the jersey, uniform, batting helmet, shorts, or some other piece of equipment say North Texas I'm gonna show up when humanly possible and pull for the green team. Because NT will be my alma mater loooooong after RV, Lee Jackson, McCarney, Benford, etc have retired or moved on. So I'm still counting the days until Friday Aug 30th so I can put up my tent and tailgate all night and all day before I watch NORTH TEXAS whoop some Idaho ass! That's all I need.* *Oh yeah, and my version of green kool-aid has been known to cause spontaneous nakedness by women and regrettable behavior. I'll have a couple gallons on hand on the 31st.3 points

Did anyone ever think Coach Mac would not start a senior QB in the home season opener of his last Mean Green football rodeo? We've all seen senior QB's in college football put it all together their last season and we all hope DT#7 does just that. If he doesn't then guess what? We have coaches who want to win as much as we do (obviously) who will go to the next QB whose earned playing time. If that QB performs well, moves this offense and scores enough to win a game, then "WALA!" that QB will start the next game. I think DT#7 will start but I think another QB or 2 will also get playing time, too. We need to have 1 or 2 other QB's who can step in at any time and we not lose a step come our conference schedule. We have a situation here and it's a good one. We have more than 1 or 2 or 3 (or more) QB's who can most likely start at any time in this our CUSA inaugural season. No doubt that that is a good thing. Let's just allow all this to play its way out. GMG! _______________________________ A Dad Caption Joke of the Day: (insert British accent below) "Hurry up, Froggies! Get off the field--and now! good god everyone is whining on here... from what it sounds like, everyone who has been watching these guys has Thompson begged as the better player at the position right now... you guys sound as if youd rather have a different qb in there just because his name isn't thompson DT has had flashes of brilliance, and hopefully this year, he can get into more of a rhythm early in games, have receivers he can trust throwing the ball too and also not only be allowed to pass when it's 3rd and 8-10 you got this DT, set some records and get us to a bowl game this year3 points

8 days of contact is an extremely long time? And where do the ideas come from that the coaches don't want Derrick or don't trust him? In three years now the coaches have brought in three or four other QB's to push DT and havent been able to find one who can unseat him yet. So,..if the coaches don't trust DT by now what does it say about the coaches abilities to evaluate talent? Rick2 points

Yeah, I think that's the real mystery of the whole thing, kinda like "Derek Thompson emerged as leader, because...." According to a thread in the baseball forum, unt baseball was supposed to be up for approval at the BOR on Thursday and Friday. I assume then that it wasn't discussed and therefore is a long ways off?2 points

Keep it up, UNT90. You are spot on about all of this. There is a huge difference in building new facilities to replace crumbling, decrepit, outdated ones and actually funding a program properly. Just because we have the new facilities that are a breath of fresh air to all of us, doesn't make the job complete. Funding an athletic department correctly involves facilities and personnel. Personnel should be fired or extended because of their W/L record or in the ADs case how the $$$ sports are doing. We don't do that here and never have. We fire people when it is cost effective. Extending RV after the last 8 years of football, the continued losing int he women's basketball program, and the absolute debacle of hiring Tony Benford with your most talented team of any sport in 35 years at the school only reinforces the view that the AD at UNT is to run his office the cheapest way possible for the BOR and administration. Only charging half the athletic fee that freaking UTSA and Texas State confirms it. Obviously, at bare minimum, 1/3rd of the BOR hates athletic spending, and I'm willing to bet that another 2 or 3 will eventually be swayed to follow their lead. Show us differently and we will post our support of this proof. Otherwise, its the same ol song and dance as far as I'm concerned about UNT athletic funding.2 points
