This isn't a throw-back. It's an homage...not to one point in history or to "better days" but to 100 years of tradition. The reason you can't find an example of another school doing something similar is because to my knowledge...no one has done it...and it baffles me how that seems to be the complaint from those who don't like the uniform. The AD has delivered not just something many fans have been asking for for some time, but they've done it in a unique and clever way, that not UT, not A&M, not SMU, not TCU or not anyone else whose shadow we envy to be out from under has done. UNT set a trend rather than following one and it looks damn good. And yet...again...7 pages of bitching.8 points

Oh, I believe it. I did get a trip into Tulsa one summer. Flew in and got off the plane and immediately was soaked. So, yes, there is absolutely nothing that can come close to what the team and fans are going to experience. But I look forward to all the other stuff my niece has planned in the four days. The game, tailgating, meeting you guys is top priority though. It is a great measuring stick for us to compare our team's fundamentals-discipline to last few years of big plays, but only to be called back due to someone fighting an opponent half a field away. Flags. Flags. Flags. You will see all business, little, if any, jawing ---- I think. Anyhow, this is fun. I have maps out of your area, reading the history of the area and just calling it my get away with fellow Vandal fans. Wife is staying, She has work. I am in year three of retirement. Never have been in the great state of Texas. Niece (lives in Irving) has warned me for the furnace blast. LOL6 points

Jim, right now I see this as a 6-6 season. I think that we beat Idaho, LaTech, Tulane, Southern Miss, UTSA and UTEP. If we can find more offensive firepower I might add MUTS and Ball State to my list of wins. If the North Texas defense performed as last year and the other 13 did the same we would have the second best defense in the conference. Only Tulsa would be better and they won a conference championship. I believe that this defense will be even better; especially the defensive backs. Our Achilles' heel is the defensive line...especially the tackles. The weakest part of our defense last year was stopping the run and that's likely the case again. However, I believe that Skladany is a crafty old codger and will use linebackers to fill gaps and possibly play a lot more nickel for pass coverage. The offense is a different story. Only four teams produced less offense than the Mean Green and their combined record was something like 8-32. Derek Thompson's quarterback rating was 12th of the 14 quarterbacks that played last season. Of course, a few of those have moved on but their replacements are mostly better. If Berglund, or Williams, earn the starting role that will show considerable improvement because I expect Thompson to be better than last year. If Terrell, Brady Brown, and one or two among Schrapps, Lancaster, or Kidsy come through we could have a pretty salty receiving corps. For now, the running is more reliable. I have zero concern regarding our offensive line which should be among the top two or three in CUSA. However, special teams need a tremendous amount of improvement in every area. Only FAU was more pitiful than our kicking, return and coverage units. I believe that Coach Perry will improve all aspects of special teams with the possible exception of punting. Punting would have been middle-of-the-pack last year and hopefully will this year. If everything fell into place (which it never does) Rice is another possible win. But, until proven otherwise, I'm sticking with my prediction of six wins.6 points

Gotta think if 50 trained him, he would know how to use it?4 points

If they're even, i'd go with the Vet. The guy has put in his time with the program and probably deserves a little loyalty. He would be on a really short leash and see his time diminish based on the record and the closer we get to the end of the season.4 points
-
No. Now if they are even then I would say you go with the youngster. But you put out who will give you the best chance to win every week.4 points

So which era would you have chosen for our's? Face it, they did a great job incorporating segments of different eras. It would be impossible to make everyone happy. Only our fanbase would argue over this. Such a whipping.4 points

Baylor, Houston, Navy, NC State and numerous others aren't with the CLC and are instead with the Licensing Resource Group or LRG for short. If the above schools were with the CLC, they would have easily been on the list since they sell a lot of merchandise.3 points

When you watch him play two things stand out. 1 He is accurate. I'd be willing to bet he is more accurate then the 3 other QB's. 2 He is a playmaker. He has the ability to make something out of nothing. Like Chico said he brings something to the table that the other guys just don't. Plus he fits with what I believe UNT wants out of the QB position. They are looking for someone who is accurate, wont turn the ball over, has the ability to make plays with their feet, and can throw the deep ball. He does need to work on ball velocity a little bit, but to me its not that big of an issue. He showed enough arm strength to fit some throws in tight spaces. He has all the tools to be a BCS level QB. Plus he looks good in green! Does he have enough time to overtake the other 3 guys. Well I think that remains to be seen. Would you guys feel upset if he didn't start, but saw playing time with a few packages tailored to fit his abilities? Do you think we as Mean Green fans are blowing this kid up as the savior of the program? I mean in the last 48hrs he has become a household name. How many of you guys honestly thought he was this good back when he signed in Feb? How many of you thought he could be the eventual starter back when he gave his verbal? I think a lot of the Dajon Williams buzz has to do with us being a QB starved fan base. We haven't had a decent one in a decade or so. So we tend to latch ourselves on to what ever hope presents itself. The other part of the buzz is caused by Dajon himself. Its one thing to be a primetime recruit and to come into a university and have to live up to the hype. Give Dajon credit for making this a 4 QB race. He didn't come to UNT as a highly touted recruit, but he has put in some good work and so far has gotten rewarded with it. I don't know if he will be starting Aug 31, but I wish him all the best because I believe he can really help us3 points

First, if you are working night shift tonight at university of Hilton, I would like a wake up call at 5:30. Second, I would like two eggs over medium, two slices of bacon slightly cripsy but not burned, with toast (lightly buttered) and mean green apple jelly. Lastly, do not ever make eye contact with me, or anyone else on GMG. That goes for your buddy, doggy style from Ft. Worth too.3 points

So you'd say that playing high school competition equates to or is tougher than facing D1 athletes (granted, it's the scout team)? I'm not advocating for BB to be he guy, I just think it's funny that the same drawbacks are conspicuously missing from the discussion of Dajon's merits as a starter.3 points

I hope it's either Williams or Berglund. They have the most upside in a conference where you need to put up points3 points

They are throwback, I don't give a rats behind what they look like as long as we get a win. I don't watch the games to see the uniforms. This is football people, not some kind of designer competition. Besides, I bet you will be liking them after we BEAT Idaho. At least they don't look as bad as Marylands. ]3 points

Rick Spears who designed the logo called it the Stylized Eagle, and was never too excited about it being called the Flyin Worm,.. But that is what stuck. So there it is....The Flyin Worm. Some day after a couple of retirements from one dept in particular on our campus...not the AD,...I hope we can eventually get an interlinked NT somewhere on our uni's along with the SOW too. I think that this isn't the year that a coaching change occurs, unless we only win 2 games or less, so Mac should be able to continue to build toward the future. Whether we agree that is right or completely wrong, isn't really the point because it is what it is. That said, I do believe that another guy should be under center instead of DT. He's your backup to ensure that if you need someone ready in case of injury or ineffectiveness, but you have to prepare for the future. Its very possible that the 2nd half of the season will look a lot better for UNT's future, than the first half, just because of the QB situation. If We get to 5 wins with someone else as QB at the end of the year, I'll bet 2014 will be a very good season for the Mean Green. If we win 5 or less with DT as our main QB all year long, then I think 2014 will be a crapshoot, which is not exactly how Mac wants to go into his make-or-break year on his contract.2 points

Its too late to start wasting reps to get a point across. If you are working with the 1st and 2nd team at this point, you have a shot. I cant see them using reps on a player they will redshirt instead of using them reps to improve the other qbs. Dajon is in the mix. And if he doesnt redshirt, he will play at some point. You wont burn a redshirt like that and dont get him some work and experience in.2 points

Not his MO...there are already three trying for the top spot..now 4...if anything ,it it to try to motivate more out of Dajon...that he coulld, as a freshman, become the NO 1 QB for UNT this year !!2 points

Excited to have you visit the Mean Green Nation. I believe you will be warmly (and not just by the temps) welcomed by the Mean Green fans and that you will enjoy the pre-game tailgate and our great new stadium called Apogee Stadium. But, in all honesty, I hope you do not enjoy the game itself very much! Mean green really need an opening win at home in the worst of ways....WELCOME TO THE MEAN GREEN NATION. Hopefully DW has a great career but I find it a little funny that Coach Mac makes a comment and how many people are now ready to back him (DW) as the man. Just wondering if everyone is going to be supporting Coach on everything he says? I still hope that unless DW can clearly show he is better than everyone else that we red shirt him.2 points

Riley was recruited as an athlete. The only reason he was semi successful was the fact that he could run the ball. That also led to him having to retire because he just couldn't take the punishment.2 points

Yes, my dad was an Oiler with "Slim Jim" Norton and they remained friends after dad's playing days were over (dad remained friends with Bob Talamini and "Dirty Al" Jamison, names you also might remember from the old Jeppesen stadium days). Jim was a terrific guy and I enjoyed going on fishing trips with he and dad. He spoke beautifully at dad's funeral and it pains me to think of those guys dying away (Norton died in 2007). I can't work up much of a froth against the Idaho Vandals because it was the alma mater of a great guy named Jim Norton. Plumm, I'm happy to know there are still some codgers around like me that can remember guys like Norton and actually saw games at the The Jep. As long as we live, those dear dead days are not completely gone. Danbury High School! I actually drove down to Danbury 10-years ago to watch a HS game because they were running the Double Wing formation and I wanted to see how they executed it.2 points

Ive said this before , but Anywhere up North/ East Coast. You can sell Texas itself, Ask kids if they want to come play in the greatest football state with Better women , weather & footall. Example : Go for 3 star kids in Michigan who maybe get passed up by UM & Michigan State. Instead of having to choose between CMU or EMU , see if they want to come down South where real football is played2 points

in the early going it will be DT, but a switch will be made and with DWill on the rise we may see him starting under center before the season ends.2 points

If you actually knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't need to "foreshadow" it, you would just say it outright. Go back and read your own posts, because what you were doing wasn't "foreshadowing", you were stating your weak ass opinion which was in fact something that 95% of everyone else knows on the forum knows, so its really not all that impressive and probably not worth getting on this forum and showing your ass about. Now, get off the computer, finish washing my 16 year old sons Ranger Rover and return it to my garage.2 points

Wow! Last year Dajon wasn't even considered the best quarterback in District 17-4A...Jake Hubenak was. Of course, Hubenak may have been chosen primarily because of his taking Georgetown all the way to the title game. Williams had a good year (8-4 area finalist) and we knew that he had a lot of potential but I am blown away that he has a chance to start as a true freshman. Either he has made a huge advancement in a short time or our quarterback corps isn't very good. Still, I just want them to put the best quarterback on the field regardless of classification. Go Mean Green!2 points

Honestly? I'm just glad to see that we have a handful of QB's in Fall camp from which to pick rather than just our usual 1 or 2. Why are we so worried about the QB position and so few threads on the defensive line comparatively? If we solve the DL problem this team will go bowling and all the Neg' Neds will have to come up with some totally new material for this board. Like maybe the turbines outside Apogee blades are turning too fast to suit them? I pray to the good Lord above that some of our recruits never read this board at times it gets so trite on subject material. Whoever our QB (s) are I believe will still be running the kind of offense that can control the clock and keep other offenses off the field in CUSA play. Been a long time since I felt this good about the UNT football program quite frankly, but our powers that be went out and hired someone who had been a HFC at the major college level for the first time since Fry (and Tyler's one year disaster many of us still don't count). These kind of hires just bring something different to the table and I know in Coach Mac's upcoming Year 3 he has been disected and bisected by so many, but like him or not, he brings that certain intangible with his HFC's background that we've not had for a long time in Mean Green Country.
