I'm not positive, but I think that makes North Texas an Ivy League school now.7 points

Who knows? I may be your grandpa. I remember when UH could not draw flies even had they been a horse manure factory. Why don't you just give up all that Cougar crap and come back home where you know you belong since you're already here anyway? GMG!7 points

Win and they'll care. They never referenced SMU football until June started taking them to bowl games again. They tried to start caring about UNT Basketball before Benny showed up and crapped all over everything.5 points

In 1994, ie, 1310 KTCK "The Ticket"s first year of operation, the University of North Texas owned that radio station (so to speak) during the Fall. Dallas' 1310 AM carried all our football and basketball games that athletic year and even had a post game call-in shows that kept their phone boards lit up. I don't think KTCK managment could have ever dreamed this would work so successfully with UNT. Of course in 1994, we were winning some games, too. Well, one other DFW area school couldn't stand it so the next season they basically bought off The Ticket thinking they would have similar listenership as our UNT constituency gave Jub'Jub's and Junior's station but that was not going to happen. Do the constituency math comparisons of both schools and anyone would understand why. Of course, 1994 was the year that all our UNT lambs layed down with all our UNT lions; that is, we all had a common purpose and goal and as many of you have said in the past we came together like no other time before to reach what would become a very important milestone for our school. That milestone was for our school to re-gain NCAA D-1 classification which we did. Not sure why a new CUSA membership has not created the same effect albeit has to an extent but not like 1994....IMO. If North Texas alums can ever get to that level of solidarity again, there is nothing that we can't do as a group, but reading this forum lately makes me think that might be quite difficult. Many of us who have given a damn about all this for 4 and 5 plus decades have questioned personnel from time to time who we think have been given proper time to produce but you know what? ? ? ?.......at age 62 ,I've decided I'm now too old to be upset about every damn thing up there that does not produce some winning seasons (which, of course, losing as we have created such an attitude for many of us). My thing now and probably what should have been all along will be to come to games at Apogee, enjoy the food, fun and fellowship, sing the school song so people in the next section can hear me and just support our school and its football team. Maybe we have the winning combinations up there who are just needing more time to make all this work but hear me out with that, too.... ......unless you are a UNT Board of Regent you may find out quickly that you might be wasting much of your youthful energy and keyboarding skills trying to fight UNT's version of City Hall. Lights are on in the A/D, but no one is listening to us most the time even with all our million dollar ideas that we have seen dissipate like a wisp of vapor in the Texas sun. Bottom LIne? It's their job, folks, not ours. We can be still be proper gentlemen to them even if we agree to disagree--even when we vehemently disagree from time to time. No doubt we do have some very nice, congenial people on our athletic staff and right now for all of our sakes (and theirs) we should just bury a few hatchets (not in someone's head, either) and hope for them to succeed in ways we've never seen in Denton--even during the Mean Joe Greene and Hayden Fry eras or the 4 bowl games in a row era of last decade. Honestly? It's just when you get older you want the timeline to become winners to be moved up and thus some of my own past reasons to fight UNT's version of City Hall merely trying to, uh, hurry things up? Not that what I suggested might have done it, but if you give a damn about UNT like most all on this board, you just do and say some of the damndest things from time to time. Folks, it's just not worth your time to be pissed, miffed and to attempt to change what you cannot change with words on a college message board like GMG.com. Some of you I have admired from a distance your efforts to make a difference with some of you succeeding but at the same time getting your feelings hurt and then the bitterness that too many times follows but..........................sometimes its just becomes a good idea to try new and friendlier methods; you know, sort of a "catch flies with honey" type of thing? And on GMG.com, we only run potential fans off when we get too intense on personnel or worse (personal) matters and most of us have been guilty of that, too. Best case scenario for 2013 is that all our Mean Green lambs find common ground with our Mean Green lions and we all move this program forward together. Now that would be real nice for a change. What injuries kept Soza out last year? I watched parts of a few of the UTSA games on TV last year, and only really took out of it that Soza is a gamer. That said, he's not the biggest kid in the world and the team obviously takes a hit when he's not on the field. Is he going to be an injury risk for UTSA throughout the season? I mean, he missed nearly all of your biggest games (with LaTech being the exception)? That's somewhat concerning. I hope UTSA does well in OOC, as I've always rooted for our conference mates in OOC games. But that is a BRUTAL opening stretch for a new 1A team that's still building to 85 schollies. As HerdZone pointed out....injuries WILL happen. Quality depth separates the good teams from the bad. By the time we play very late in the season, both teams could have a very different look to them.3 points

This is where I think McCarney is finally making some progress with the Texas HS Coaches. Its an uphill battle here, for sure, but he is making progress. His first few recruiting classes weren't good, but I think its just due to all the losing under Dodge. It takes time to build trust with these high school coaches, but Mac is a quality guy and I know that is starting to pay dividends with recruiting. It will all come down to wins and losses, as it should, but McCarney is just such a breath of fresh air as an ambassador of this university. I really want him to win here and be our head coach until he is ready to retire. We could use that kind of stability around here.3 points

They may believe those are the only two games that weekend, but on Monday, North Texas will be the only DFW team to post a win. LSU will destroy TCU, and Tech is going stomp SMU. I see the Idaho game as an opportunity to start the season in the right direction. By the 8th week of the season, it just looks like the first "W" on our record.3 points

I've been listening to the ticket a lot during my commute over the last year or so because my only other terrestrial radio options seem to be Gotye and Foster the People 20 times an hour or the maniacal rantings of angry neocons on the AM dial. OK. I kinda enjoy listening to the maniacal rantings of angry neocons on the AM dial once in a while. Kinda get a kick out of it. So, the ticket. Its appeal to me is that they do a great job of making you feel like you've gotten to know the on-air talent. I feel like I could walk up to Corby in a bar, buy him a beer, and just continue the conversation that he started yesterday afternoon at four o'clock. Its downside to me is that I'm not in seventh grade. All the fake Jerry Jones, the Scatter Shooting, the implied sexual innuendo that George wants to laugh at, but really, at heart, he's a little too prudish to speak of, that stuff sends me straight back to the FM dial for the sweet, temple shattering sounds of AWOL Nation and their ADD rant shouts. Contrary to just about everybody in DFW, I think I really prefer the afternoon drive to the morning musers. They're just a little bit more real to me, and their comedy is just a tad bit more of an honest projection of who they are. As for whether or not they mention UNT or not? Meh, I really couldn't care less. George is constantly getting in his plugs, so kudos to him. But as to whether or not the DFW radio listening population cares or not, whether UNT makes a Ticket Ticker (which they did, when basketball was rumored to have hired that other coach, not Benford), I don't care. UNT makes or breaks itself. We don't need a couple guys in a studio to do it for us.3 points

Kram, before I launch into my tirade let me say that I congratulate you for finishing third among the volunteers. I believe that UNT 90 Grad was in the group just behind yours. It is dedicated alumni like you two and the others listed that are absolutely essential in moving this program forward. Thanks for all that you (and others) do. Now my complaint. I had to travel a little further to the event this time and due to traffic arrived about 15-20 minutes late. I had made a reservation and got my name tag then went to find a seat. The place was full with about 10-20 standing and talking outside the tabled area. Those with reservations had pre-printed name badges and I assume that those without did not. About a fourth of the tables were occupied by people with handwritten name badges. By the time RV began speaking there were about 50 people unable to find a seat. I was already tired from the day and, at my age, was unable to stand there very long. I got my food and found a seat at the counter that overlooks the football field. I could neither see nor clearly hear very much of the program until Dan McCarney spoke. I was finally able to find a seat in the foyer and Mac's voice was strong enough that I could understand most of what he said. I definitely wished that I hadn't come and won't again in the future. I will make a suggestion to Rick V for future programs. Either make it a first-come, first-served event or turn away those without reservations. Or, maybe those that come without reservations could be advised that their admittance is for standing room only.3 points

I spoke with Hank last night and he is getting us 200 schedule posters and 200 schedule cups to distribute August 10 (Saturday) at 10 AM. We will meet at the Alumni Pavillion and split up into groups and cover Denton in green. This is a project that all GMG members can help with. Even if you just stop by and pick up 6 or 8 posters, that's 6 or 8 more locations covered. We'll need posters on the square, golden Triangle Mall, the new shopping areas on Loop 288, up and down University Drive, as well as the University area. Find a way to get out and help with this important, easy and fun project. Sign up here and bring a buddy. And bring a brush. We're painting the town GREEN !! GO MEAN GREEN2 points

Whining and complaining and name-calling will only make this worse with these sports media members. Silver's message is dead-on. You send out reminders, thank them for receiving your email or phone call, and just hope that it matters to them that you reached out to them politely. Otherwise, when the inevitable 72-0 score against our usual NFL-lite bodybag opponent rolls around, you'll see a ton of mentions--with added sarcasm and commentary. I've seen it happen to fans of every school in this state when their team gets pounded--"Well, all of you Tech fans out there that complain that I don't give you any attention as compared to UT or A&M, well, here ya' go. Today, at home in Lubbock, your fine team that you berate me about not covering enough, just lost a heartbreaker 65-6 to Oklahoma State. So there you go." It just makes it worse, in my opinion.2 points

If anyone who is a North Texas fan expects any of these sports stations to punch their self-esteem ticket, you are sadly......well.....sad. As a group we need to let the various media outlets know that we at least expect acknowledgement of our existence. And when we call or e-mail, we need to put it on the outlet and say that if they consider themselves professionals in their business they will devote at least a few seconds to say " and also this week-end North Texas opens it's season with Idaho at home. Kick-off is 6:pm." The worst thing you can do is whine or complain about unfair treatment. Just state your expectations plainly and firmly about what you professionally expect from them.2 points

They don't know. Game day I imagine. It's not hard to figure out from other teams experiences.2 points

Granted, I'm 15 years away from having my kids starting off to college, but I like the approach my parents took with my sister and I: they covered most of our living expenses and left the responsibility of tuition and books up to us. That way, they really think about whether or not going out-of-state or private is really worth them getting into massive debt. We've started a 529 for both of our kids, but we're letting them know early on that they shouldn't expect that it will cover all their education and that they should start thinking about scolarships when they start applying to schools. Worked out well for me as I was able to graduate without any debt. Would have worked out for my sister if she wouldn't have gone to SMU her first year before transferring to North Texas. Even with a good amount of scholarships, she still went into about $8K worth of debt for that one year. Glad she finally saw the light and moved away from the dark side.2 points

Dont be dumb. I know your homerism makes you think your back-up could keep the team afloat but if Cato went down your team would take huge a dip, same happened with Soza and UTSA. I still think we lose to Rice, Utah St and San Jose St regardless but I pointed that out to show how pointless your boxscore analysis was...and how that stat of UTSA getting outscored by quality opponents is misleading. I never made those predictions about UTSA. Ive said anywhere from 3-4 wins is the most realistic scenario for our young program, .500 or anything near it would be amazing. We have plenty of overly optimistic fans but Ive never seen any of them express the type of elitist attitude NT displays towards UTSA.2 points

Played golf with Richie Witt once. Seemed like a good dude. Greggo on the other hand has always seemed like a doucher of the highest order. Richie did not deserve the drug addict to wreck another show. I can only assume Greggo learned boths habits while at tcu.2 points

I don't think UNT has a false sense of entitlement at all. We don't expect huge winning seasons with BCS berths most of the time, mostly because we have a ridiculous history of our fanbase disappearing primarily due to an unsupportive administration for decades, in what was a very small artsy town. Now that we have more support, are back to FBS for almost 20 years, and our fanbase is solid though not huge, it's not unreasonable to expect to beat FCS and new FBS teams. As was shown with FAU, that expectation doesn't always come to fruition but is still a reasonable one. Another part of the problem is that we've changed our name 6 times. That disenfranchised some alums, and did make it hard to be recognized but if you travel, most people still don't know "UNT" but if you say "North Texas", most people with a college education (even in AZ, PA, CA, LA, etc - states where I've traveled the most) generally know who we are. So between our branding and our other problems already mentioned, it has been difficult to gather a steady fanbase and grow the idea of traditions and such, but it still doesn't make us unknown or low-quality, it just means we had a lot of weird crap that appears to finally be getting ironed out. Luckily for UTSA, they did everything properly right out of the gate, and unless they someday break away from the UT system, have an instantly recognizable brand. Everybody knows the UT system and everybody has heard of San Antonio, so even if nobody heard of the school before, if you say you went to UT-San Antonio it shouldn't be hard to figure out. So they definitely have an edge in terms of how easy it will be (and already has been) to start and transition quickly. This is more just an issue of awareness than preference. Obviously we each want our own teams to win, and everyone always hopes to pull out a W against a team that would be expected to beat them, but I think the Kool-Aid is strong in San Antonio. UNT is certainly not a powerhouse team, but for them to assume this as a win is a bit more of a reach than the other way around (that kinda sounded wrong but you know what I mean). Anything is possible in college football, but for our game to be compared to any of their wins last season - even with their team being more experienced than they were at the beginning of last season (as is ours) and healthier than during some of the tougher games (ditto) - is quite a stretch. We'll be better able to see how tough a game this is for each after the OOC games unfold, but for now it would be unreasonable to project a UTSA win over UNT. Their program's growth is such that we may not be able to say that for long if it keeps up at this rate, but for now I don't see any logical way to validate a prediction such as that unless you're predicting it as an "upset".2 points

For fun: I really think the most consistent indicator of success is returning experience in the lines...especially OL. We had the top OL in the country last year in terms of sacks allowed...and a darn good running game. Nearly all of that returns and we have IMO many more OL skins on the wall than UTSAs. Lucky (or unlucky, depending on the outcome) for them, this is played on the field and not on a spreadsheet. As far as I'm concerned, they can have Johnny Football taking snaps for them but he can't score if he's not on the field.2 points

Just as an aside on this, have you ever played the games? In what world do the player models qualify as a "likeness" of the players? Those models are so generic that they don't resemble any player. Not taking a side here, but I have trouble saying that the players likeness was used. Their jersey number, used with limited accuracy, but not their likeness.2 points
