Here's the problem: We're not a 3A school. We're within the top 30 (top 25 by some counts) largest state universities in the country. We're larger than many of the perennial national title contenders out there. I know some may disagree, but to me it's embarrassing to even consider dropping down in weight class to fight 145 lb welterweights just because we're kind of sucking as a 250 lb heavyweight. Look, the only element some of you seem to care about is having regional rivals and/or in-state conference mates. If this is the case, why did we ever leave the Southland Conference? Do you remember how we dominated and played in I-AA national championships every year? Oh wait . . . didn't work that way. In fact, it only took us 8 years to win as many conference championships in I-A as we did the entire time in I-AA. What happens when we acquiesce to being left behind and even applaud the development of a new division? Sure, being among schools like Rice, UTEP, Louisiana Tech, and UTSA doesn't seem that bad. But, what happens when one (or two or three) of those aforementioned schools finds a way to assemble the revenue/attendance/influence to move up and leave our sad little "3A" conference? We would end up even more irrelevant as a football program than we were in 1994 prior to the move to I-A. And, just in case you don't think it's plausible for any of the above schools to be included among the big boys, consider this: Rice could probably join a better conference any time they wanted. They have such a sterling academic reputation that plenty of the "big boy" schools would kill to have them among their brethren. Also, they have a baseball team that has won a national championship in recent memory. Finally, they simply have enough wealthy alumni that if they really wanted to (they haven't shown the desire so far, but just wait) they could pull some strings. As for UTEP, they could shift to the Mountain West at any time, and there is the distinct possibility that the entire MWC might be included in a jump up to a Division IV. If we remain complacent and sit back while many other football programs in the state move up in rank, we may be shocked at just how many of them eventually jump together and leave us staring up and wondering what happened. One point that I've made before is that when you list out the top 40 or so largest state universities in the country, almost all of them excel in one or more of the major revenue sports (for the sake of this discussion I'm including baseball). And, nearly every one of those schools is highly respected academically. No matter how you try to slice it, a school's reputation is a school's reputation, and academics and athletics are intrinsically linked in the general public's perception of an institution's efficacy and overall well-being (with the exception of Ivy League schools and various other highly prestigious private institutions--some of which aren't even all that bad at athletics). We REALLY need to start acting like our peer institutions (large, national research, state universities). I know we don't currently have the athletic budget or endowment that most of the other schools on that list have, but we must take our lumps in the meantime while we slowly work toward getting there. Knowingly embracing a divisional separation that officially casts us as "less than" most if not all of the relevant football programs in our state and region will NOT be good for our overall reputation as an institution of higher learning. It also will not necessarily help us win, as noted above. And, it will NOT help us build a fan base and/or increase athletic revenue. Quite simply, it will set us back further than, perhaps, we have ever been since the inception of our football program 100 years ago.4 points

We were NAIA Division 1 before going NCAA D2. Same thing happened to us. It got down to where there were only 35 teams. Making the top 25 kind of lost its luster. The Southern Miss coach is absolutely right. What happens to the bottom feeders in the power5? The best thing for everyone in college football is to increase competition not decrease it. It is all about greed that is one reason I hate the SEC. They are the poster boy. The Bible had a caution about these things. The love of money is the root of all evils.3 points

I remember years ago, when we went to Lubbock (and came back with the tortilla tradition) to play Tech. TT had recently gotten their indoor practice facility and the concensus was that since TT had more/better facilities, NT would likely lose the game. Lo and behold, North Texas won. That's a long way to go to say, given the choice between an indoor practice facility and a varsity baseball program, I'll choose baseball every time. The number of sports that a university participates in does not include "indoor practice facility. Play ball GO MEAN GREEN3 points

I agree UNT needs an indoor practice facility. In fact, I agree with PlummMeanGreen that we need this over a baseball stadium.3 points

Maybe Craig & Tobe were neglected by Vito on purpose to make it seem like a longer time since a UNT LB was as good as Zach. I really hope Zach gets a chance to play in the NFL. I think Craig's success in CLE will show some other teams what we have cooking here at UNT and that Zach will be worth it.2 points

CW-that must have been a recent move, because the ROTC used to be in one of those halls near the Union...grr which one was it...you go in the door and there are steps down, some hallways and then steps right back up again...? Anyway it's where the Aero Dept. was as well. So they must have been planning for the move, but if they are to be moved again then this might be an option... As for GL2G's fairly short post, those of you who usually skip his might want to read it because it does break down funding properly. And yes, for the most part dorm fees can't cover any athletics unless they earmark some of the "activity" portions of their fees for something related to the AD (which they usually use for stuff like Homecoming, but they also use it for booths at University-wide events, basketball sneak peeks, etc.) So yes, it can go towards a Housing/Athletics crossover, but not for an Athletic facility unless there is some specific Residential use tied in with it. Similarly, all revenue-based non-Academic, non-Athletic departments are under the Assistant VP for Business Services, who is under the VP for Fiscal Affairs unless that has changed. So things like the Union, Housing, and all Food Services are covered by this, though the structures themselves are bonded and paid for by the state-approved budget just like any academic building. So even though he was being pessimistic as usual, if you want a breakdown of fees and budgets it was pretty solid.2 points

We'll only return 7 scholarship receivers after this year is over if everyone stays. Only two of which has any experience so far in Carlos Harris and Derrick Teagarden. The others are Darius Terrell, Darvin Kidsy, Turner Smiley, Nick Schrapps, and Rod Lancaster. Good to see us add some talent to our potential future receiving core.1 point

Are there any interior and exterior sample pics of indoor practice facilities of NCAA FBS schools in the $10 to $15 million range out there? Maybe even a few that were built as "multi-use" facilities? GMG!1 point

I think the NCAA upper echelon leaders will still want to keep the Cinderella effect (G5) in the game in the NCAA FBS, but then who the heck knows where the almighty dollar will lead the NFL 2.0, ie, P5 group before this is all done. GMG!1 point

Try again. Whites (not latino) are 63% of the US population...unless I'm reading the US census bureau's own statistic incorrectly. And I think this article articulates why counting the total number of each racial group is actually LESS ammo for the "black on black crime" talking point. http://racismschool.tumblr.com/post/22683535699/black-on-black-crime And my point isn't that whites are inherently criminal. Far from it. I just find it amusing that, if 84% of whites are killed by other whites, this "epidemic" doesn't get the same traction as the "black on black crime" narrative. I'm not arguing for the creation of a "white on white crime" catch phrase...quite the opposite. I'm just arguing that we should stop running to polarizing catch phrases that attempt to oversimplify and pidgeon hole ANY race.1 point

Why do this when we can speak in generalities and point out where "you people" are perceived to fail? Why judge me, or anyone else, as a person when we can invoke Al Sharpton and then ascribe his beliefs to an entire class of people? Don't you know that pointing out how off base the most militant in a particular group are (Shelby Steele prefered Malcolm X to MLK, just as an aside) makes it easier to talk down to those who are behaving with a sense of personal accountability...because assuming group think on their part is the only conceivable way to advance this argument. No, saying that individual fathers (regardless of race) should take responsibility is too simple. Saying that parents should instill the value of education in their children (regardless of race) is too devoid of bully pulpit talking points. The conversation must now be couched in terms of an epidemic facing one community (and not another) and how you have a wisdom about where it stems from that they are just too dumb to recognize themselves. It's the 21st century bigotry, racism masked as paternalism.1 point
-
No matter the color, black, white, yellow, or polka dotted, we are all individuals and can only control our own actions and destinies. Sharpton doesn't speak for the entire black community just like Limbaugh doesn't speak for the entire white community. If everybody bettered themselves as an individual, then collectively all races, groups, etc would improve as a whole. Lets all just worry about ourselves, respect each other, hold hands, and sing around the campfire. Peace1 point
