  3. UNT young? No we've been young for the past two years. This is an experienced team with exception of a few positions. They are most likely the most experienced team in CUSA. Well now looking at it they will be like the second most experienced team in CUSA behind Rice (86% of their lettermen returning). Anyways I would rather have experience over youth. If we had their schedule with our team last year I could see us winning 3 games. They were just better than us plain and simple. They won a bowl game. So why wouldn’t you pick them over us? What did we do to make me people think we are better than them? Did we out recruit them in the offseason? No. Until we prove it on the field there is no reason other than it being a home game to pick us to win. The great thing about that though is it can all change come August & September. We may prove it. Its just so hard to believe anything this far away from the Rice game.

  4. I wouldn't say Tech was way down the times we beat them. . . . Although they later became better than they had ever been under Leach. But when we beat them in '99, they were 6-5 with a win over OU. When we beat them in '97, they were 6-5 with a dominating win over UT. Those were at some pretty decent Tech teams.

  8. That 32-31 Rice loss was the first UNT game I ever saw in person at Fouts. It was also when I was still Eagle Green.

  9. 32-31 was also a loss (dang. I was there. My memory is already fading). 77-20: The last score that I remember...better? Point-being: Rice will be difficult every time we play them.

  10. That's not the last score between us. 32-31 is. EDIT: Glick beat me to it. As to why I expect Rice to be the 2nd-toughest team in C-USA West. . . . They were a very young team. In contrast to La Tech, who graduated most of their starters, Rice brings back almost everybody, especially their stars (e.g., McHargue and McGuffie). And they found their legs toward the end of last season. . . . if they would have been playing the way they did at the end of the season all season, they would have won 10 games. Now they bring that momentum into next season. You never know what will happen, but they should be very good.

We play in Fouts...gone We don't fund our program...gone We don't have a quality coaching staff...gone We play in the Sun Belt...gone We don't play Texas teams...gone If we continue to struggle we simply HAVE TO start taking a hard look in the mirror (and on Bonnie Brae). -1 me all you want, but know in your heart it's true.

  24. It seems like most fans on here are pretty much chalking the Rice game up as a loss or a very tough game. I have also seen the preseason predictions that has Rice as a surprise team and all that. Really? I know Rice had a nice season, but why is it assumed they will do the same or even improve? Maybe I have paid more attention to Rice and people just assume they are good cause they won a bowl game. They are decent, but not as impressive as people think in my opinion. If you compare UNT to Rice, I think the only difference in record is schedule. Rice is very average. 7 of thier opponents finished under .500 and that is not including UTSA. 4 teams were bowl eligible. UNT had 5 opponents under .500 & played 7 bowl eligible teams. A much tougher schedule. UNT could have went 6-6, against that same schedule. With average qb play against Troy and WKent, UNT is 6-6. I am going to assume UNT gets at least average Qb play this year and that is not a lot to ask for, even if it is DT. Just average. If this is the case, I just dont set Rice being s lot better than UNT. Especially good enough to just chalk up a win at apogee for Rice.

  25. I refuse to say anybody is good at this point because no one has played a game yet. Is Rice good? I dont know, but they can be. Are we better than Rice? Won't find out till we play them. Was Rice a better team then us last year? Yes that is a fact. No matter how weak the schedule you still have to go out and excute during the games. I don't think we were very good at excuting when it mattered last year. We let some opportunites slip away. Oh well!. Its time to move on. I think UNT can beat Rice this year, but it sets its self up on PAPER to be a tough match-up for us. We still don't have a proven QB they do.

  26. Proud to have fielded one of his punts (in three attempts) during the last GoMeanGreen Bowl. Just let me say this from the experience: it looks a lot easier on TV. These guys that know how to punt kick it really, really, really high, man. And, when the ball is kicked that high, and properly, it comes down faster than you expect. Son of a motherloving duck.

  31. Exactly. They sold it in 1990. Says clearly in the article it was sold to Nebraska Book Company...also known as Neebo. Neebo went out of business and sold Voertman's The Voertmans haven't owned it since 1990...what makes you think it'll change? What worries me is that they will change these buildings from their historical style to something like Sterling. Which is worrisome. I doubt Denton would let them since the only reason Fry disappeared is due to fire, but who knows...Denton has been letting our historical and unique style disappear as of recent. However, I think it'll stay as is and get some much needed renovations...but keep the same building/style. Considering Big Mike's isn't going to let them change the building nor Kush, I think it'll be fine. They're renovating and changing the inside of Voertman's, which makes me think it'll stay the same. As far as the Tech tailgate...didn't want to believe it...wow. Since that's the only one, likely it was an accidental ship by the company. tl;dr voertman's has been owned by big business since 1990...nothing's changing.

  33. It's an early Christmas gift.................and Nirvana compared to where we've been for almost forever. Independent status (with more bowl games today) would have been fine if we would have only advanced our program with the normal progression which growth usually complements and had we kept the momentum going that Fry started (but apparently took that to Iowa, too); thus leaving with UNT the KCCMO management style; that is, the Keystone Comedy Cops Modus Operendo of how to run an NCAA college football program and how it was run for many on this board's entire adult lifetimes. This conference will work as long as we have the Houston area in it as to go to for all our varsity sports, specifically football; not sure what we'd have if CUSA ever lost Rice U, though, but funny thing is how I don't think CUSA will lose Rice U. They are smarter than the average bear down there off South Main, Houston, Texas. I honestly think now that 1 or 2 schools who left for the AAC if they had to do it over again would have stayed put in CUSA, especially if that league starts getting raided again. For instance, what if 2 from that league from its West Division take the MWC bite and 1 or 2 go with the ACC? Where does that leave the others in the AAC who jumped the CUSA ship then? I think this CUSA trip for North Texas is bigger than most realize at this point and if we only add winning to the recipe then many more will then realize it, but winning in top shelf facilities (which we now have) will eventually be a nice combo for UNT. Coach Mac from what he inherited from Coach TDodge probably needs Year 4 to turn this thing around completely but many of us hope it will be Year 3--as in this Fall. We cannot run this ship the way it was run last several years in the Sun Belt or for some there will be hell to pay. (I don't post trying for little green numbers or to win some smack board popularity contest, folks, and you should know that by now). Yet the glut and lack of players on scholarship Coach Mac inherited seems to have been the main problem for him and our program up to this point. I think our staff realizes by now that Texas HS football players are not going to (like us) genuflect everytime they see Apogee Stadium, either; it will still take some evangelistic fervor style of selling against the recruiting competition we have--even in CUSA. Our Past Is Way Too Long Past--I've Forgotten Way Too Much of It Myself: Not one Texas HS potential recruit who visits our stadium today even knows (or cares) who Hayden Fry was, what Hayden Fry did at Iowa, least of all North Texas since nothing on our campus is even named after him up there--after all why would you want name anything after the only coach who left Denton over .500 the last half century?

  36. Lol. No. La Tech is not the Indy Bowl's problem. The Indy Bowl has only their own mismanagement to blame. The Indy Bowl has been grossly mismanaged for years and years. La Tech saved the Indy Bowl in 2008. They had no title sponsor. Neither the SEC nor the Big 12 could fill their contracted tie-ins. La Tech had an invitation to play Rice in the Texas Bowl at Reliant Stadium. Dooley turned down the Texas Bowl to play in the local bowl. Attendance was 42K (about 32K Tech fans, 8K locals, 2K NIU fans). In addition to the 2008 season without a title sponsor. The Indy Bowl couldn't land a title sponsor in 2004 or 2005. They they finally signed on with Petro Sun as a title sponsor, but then Petro Sun went bankrupt and couldn't make their sponsorship payments to the Indy Bowl. The City of Shreveport ended up having to bail them out with taxpayer money under the table that was eventually discovered. That makes 4 years in the last decade without a title sponsor. You might be hard pressed to find a single bowl without a title sponsor this last decade, much less four years without one. Because they didn't have a title sponsor in the last round of negotiations, they lost the SEC and Big 12 who had been tied in with them for over a decade. On top of that, the Indy Bowl doesn't give you the full bowl experience. For their entertainment, they take the players to the bowling alley. They don't partner with the casinos to bring in shows or anything. They don't offer anything for fans like other bowls do. Just a couple months ago, the Indy Bowl goes before a committee in the state legislature, and they basically got laughed at. Their Indy Bowl hotel tax got pulled for lack of support, and then they tried it again. Missy Setters was totally unprepared. She had no letters of support from local businesses, hotels, or civic leaders. Nothing. Never mentioned the economic impact. Just that Mack Brown (who's never been to the I-Bowl) said that Big 12 teams enjoyed coming to the I-Bowl. She also pleaded that they needed the tax to stay in business. The leadership is really bad. Then add in that Shreveport-Bossier refuses to support anything local. Every minor league football, basketball, baseball, and hockey team in Shreveport-Bossier (even the successful teams) has either folded or moved. The Indy Bowl is the last thing that Shreveport has, and it may only be alive for the life of this next and possibly final contract. If they can't land an SEC team most years, it will likely die. It's not run by ESPN or the local tourism bureau. And if the Indy Bowl dies, there will be plenty of other bowls for the Mean Green if you become bowl eligible.

  42. That should never be done to an 8 year old...... what if he get older and decides he is male after all ... really stupid. --I do agree with Rick on one thing..... too much medication etc. is given to kids.... I had students with AD and it was obvious they just could not sit sstill or concentrate ....BUT ... I have had some taking the meds that had no business taking it.. Profitable I guess for Dr. Even heard of a kid tested that didn't have it.??? Too many just go home an sit, play video games, watch TV etc. instead of burning off excess energy. (also see classes 50 years ago .. kids were thinner...our fat kids look rather normal now ) I support neighborhood schools for several reasons... When I was a kid... kids walked/rode bikes to school (exercise) and played outside a lot more... Mega sized schools are cheaper to run but are worse for the kids and education. ( I would even argue more bullying ) Extreme conservatives go for cheap... not quality.

  43. It's interesting that the Liberty was the focus given when Iowa State came available that Karl Benson delayed his flight out of Memphis to beg and plead with the bowl to stick with the handshake deal he had for the bowl to take the winner of Arkansas State vs. MTSU. The I-Bowl was playing good old American politics. Two in-state teams getting the highlight at a time when they were trying to get a tax passed. Per a good friend and member of the committee, Tech had told the bowl they would accept if ULM were not invited and it pissed off the bowl committee. Tech was given an acceptance deadline with no promises on ULM. Time came and went with no answer so they invited ULM and then extended a second offer to Tech with a new deadline and that came and went with no response. At that point their sponsor demanded they take Ohio and be done with it because Steinbrecher of the MAC told them if he didn't get a committment soon he was locking Ohio into Detroit leaving only 6-6 Central Michigan available. They were pinned in with their choices being ULM vs. MTSU in a rematch or ULM vs. Central Michigan at that point. Rumor was that late Saturday night GoDaddy was balking at taking MTSU after the Jonesboro blood bath and was looking to take Tech.

  48. I hate to be "that guy" but I have a simple question that will more than likely involve a lot of people voting me down. Has any one of you actually had to coach collegiately in any sport? What about played a sport in college within the last 10 years or so? Things have changed radically, both within the NCAA, the coaching enviroment and socially that have put a major twist on how a coach can "coach". Coaching men's lacrosse at the college level was one of the hardest things I have ever done and most of those difficulties were driven by the players and not by the an abject lack of talent on a roster. If you combine the two, things get even worse. Throw in a healthy dose of restrictions of when, what, where, and, how you can interact, practice, or discipline a player and it makes coaching a much harder job than it really could be and a job I will probably not every pursue again. It is not anywhere as easy or simple to "motivate" a player as people imply. It is not like it was in many people's high school days where the coach could demand that you play or you sit or I run you to death or punish you just because I am the all powerful coach and my word is law and I answer to no one. There are pretty lengthy restrictions on what a coach can or can't get away with and beyond that there is little that a coach can do long term to force someone to give 100% effort all the time. Think about your motivations or actions or mindset as a Freshman in college. How did you reacted to authority figures, how you were so sure that they just don't "get it" or that they "just don't care" about what you want. How do you coach and more importantly motivate those guys all the time? It is a true art form, and the real secret is that much of that motivation comes from within. There are certain tasks or fostered environments or punishments or psychological games that a coach can use on a player, but when it all comes down to it, it is the player that provides the motivation. The coach can help strengthen the resolve, can help temper that motivation into excellence, help find something to be the fire to drive you forward, but the coach can't be your sole source of motivation. A coach can only pick you when you are down, can only try and help the player to understand that they need to dig deep within and find it within themselves a source of personal motivation. Some individuals use pride, some use hate, some have a lofty goal, or even an undeniable will to be the absolute best, but none use their coach as their sole source of motivation. Having a coach "force" you to be motivated is unsustainable and eventually the message is lost. To state it as anything other than "the long term motivation comes from within and is the responsibility of the player" is a massive disservice to all athletes. The will and drive to win or improve or to just work hard comes from within and it is something as an individual you have to address everyday. If you have to have a coach constantly push you, constantly monitor you, constantly makes sure that you are giving your all, then when people recognize that is in fact the case they are well within their right to question your drive or motivation. That is life. That fact is true in any discipline, any business, and to think that it does not apply to athletics is asinine. If you mentor at work has to constantly ride you to provide your best work, is it a bad thing when other departments question your motivation if you desire to transfer to their department? A big part of this is that some players have more talent than others. Welcome to the real world. Some have unworldly gifts that make any game easy to grasp and provide such an athletic advantage that they can do much more than their teammates with much less effort. The problem with those types of gifts is that after a while it is easy for a player to develop apathy. Motivation can be hard to sustain because there is nothing to set your sights on in the near term that requires you to put in greater effort. With no unscalable mountain in the foreground and the titanic dreams of being an all-time great as a professional seeming so far away, it is fairly evident the TM sometimes lost his focus and sometimes did not put forth the effort he should. There is no real point in denying it and there is also no real need to justify why it did or did not happen. Kids are kids and what he went through last year hopefully was a learning experience for him that he can use the rest of his life. Lets not forget that we are talking about young adults that are still finding themselves in life, much less are completely sure in their views and personal identities. Hopefully this now provides Tony with a constant "thing" to keep his motivation up and always going. Internal motivation is built in layers. Many have used the "jilted lover as a 2nd rounder" view as motivation to prove themselves that all 30 teams made a mistake. Some have used the fact that they are finally not the best player on the bus or the most gifted in the arena. Some have used their kids, spouses or even a personal relationship fostered with their coach or player or an influential mentor. Many have just refused to motivate themselves and ave seen their prodigious talents wasted. It is all up to TM and I have faith that he will do well. People confuse the fact that many players used their love or respect or admiration for the previous staff as part of their individual motivation. That is radically different than to say that the former staff motivated the players and this one did not. Those things the players used with JJ, those relationships, are hard to build and take time and are generally started early on in their recruitment process. With JJ's departure and with many players wanting a familiar face in Forrest, Benford was not necessarily going to instantly provide those feelings that the players used as motivation with JJ. That is completely different than to state that this staff did not try to motivate them. They tried, and it looks like sometimes it failed to reach the players. I am not sure that the players ever trusted Benford last year and therefore some lacked one of the former cornerstones they used for their individual motivation. The question really falls to, did the new staff not push the right buttons or did the players just did not want to listen? Both are correctable and only one requires a new coach. Something else to be mentioned is that most of the motivation that is not provided from within the individual is generally provided by and driven from the culture of the team. The coach can generally manipulate the culture of the team much easier than you can manipulate the players' individual desires or motivations. The tight-knit group that comes from being teammates and being around each other all the time, the cohesion it provides, is a much greater motivator than any coach. The great teams monitor their own, and police their actions among themselves to try and keep everyone on task and use each other and their common bond as motivation. I would like to think that the culture of the team did not radically change from JJ to Benford. The roster for the most part had many of the key faces. So what happened to the internal level of motivation provided by the teammates?
