  1. It's a recruiting tool folks. Teens listen to this music so playing Neil diamond or earth wind & fire isn't going to keep the HS kid interested or keep watching. Especially if there is no music. So far these videos from the athletic dept have been gold and already been featured on multiple websites including ESPN. The song is edited so what is the big deal? There is far worse on the local news than this highlight reel to help recruiting. Rant over, GMG!

  2. Zach Orr highlight video... I hadn't seen this posted. I like the highlight videos, but have they run so out of music to use that they've resulted in this? The music had to be edited so much that it's distracting from the video. I think you'd be in for a very quick buzz if you turned this into a drinking game. Take a shot each time you hear a word edited out of the music.

  3. I do not like it but I agree with it. It will be great if we can squeeze one ore two more wins out... Ball State, Rice, and Middle Tennessee could also end up being wins. That is, if the guys can give it all they got, and if we have smart QB play.

  4. 39 would be disastrous? What would 4-8 or 5-7 be? This is the highest paid coach and coaching staff ever at NT going into their 3rd full year. 6-6 keeps them another year but on the hot seat, 7-5 or better should be not only expected but demanded from every alum, fan, player, coach, administrator, RV, Diet Coke Boy, and albino squirrel on campus. Mediocrity pisses me off!

  5. Its a good point. If every player Tony faces at the next level has the game of their life against him... he's in real trouble.

  6. While I don't think this is the most hyped UNT football team, this year is vital. With this schedule, anything less than 6-6 should be a failure worthy of a firing. Our home schedule is easy. Time to take advantage. We win at home. Win 5 at home. Unrealistic, but seriously. Especially because we seem to finally have more publicity due to CUSA. We need to stop expecting mediocrity. One year turnarounds happens, look at ULL. This team was 1-2 plays away in most games. I think the 2013 team makes those plays. We looked very competitive and strong often and flat in others. I think we'll be fine. I think a 3-9 season could be disastrous towards our perception, fanbase and our future. Mostly due to Bumford...we suck in both major sports. That's scary. We have fans desperate for something, or we risk losing everything we've built.

  7. I have a feeling your fan base is going to feel alot like UNT's basketball fan base after this season is over. High expectations. Catastrophic results.

  8. Come on ragpicker, I've had many more posts just as convuluted as the one you critiqued! How long you been on this messge board again? (Better yet, how long you been a Mean Green fan)? So.........in my best Monty Python'esqe way I ask you this, Sir Ragpicker: "Is that all you've got.....you pansy?!?!?!? How about......"PMG, your posts are always way too damn long-winded because all know that...... brevity is the soul of wit................and like I haven't been hammered with that phrase a couple dozen times or more the last dozen plus years I've been a member of this forum? So here you go, and your new GMG.com knighted name is.........Sir Lord Nitpicker...........and go ahead.....just keep chopping me up in little pieces! (And for heaven's sake don't ya' dare look at my new avatar pic or signature, either). But as always...................GMG!

  13. Zach's my boy (going to have to start up the player adoption thread again sometime), but I agree with the criticism of the Rick Ross track. So many to choose from... and if he just really needed that one, I bet an instrumental is available. IMO, he should have stuck with the got 5 on it instrumental throughout. One of the best hip-hop beats ever.

  14. come fall ball we will see Brock take over the team if DT is struggling? Or do we see lil mac take over? I don't see DT becoming the answer we have been looking for and I'm praying Brock is, but relying on a player that hasn't played in years doesn't seem promising.

  17. My anticipation is much like that of the battered spouce waiting for their partner to return from work. I'm fearfully optimistic that things will be better... but I only expect what I've grown accustomed to.

  18. I said in that post anything under 6-6 should result in a firing! 3-9 may be so disastrous that this program may never recover is what I was getting at. That being said, I see so much potential this season.

  19. Everyone wants to say CUSA is worse than the Belt at football.... Is it so much worse that at bad Belt team instantly becomes a 7 game winner?

  20. I think a lost to UTSA or going less than 6-6 merits firing...then perhaps someone other than RV should do the hiring.

  21. Or 5-7.It could go either way.I think best case is 6-6,worse case 4-8.

  25. If beasly is the lowest Mitchell could get then I will take it. Beasly has been a solid contributor and if that is the worst Mitchell can do he is looking pretty good.

  26. More and more people don't want to go to a nice place to eat and smell smoke, especially with their families. Not catering to this growing segment is showing to be a bad business decision. It's why finding a bowling ally that allows smoking is very difficult. The ally basically has to be a real dive.

  27. I'm going to have to go with anticipation. This is the year I've been thinking would be Mac's first big one, with redshirts and strength training and such coming to fruition. Then factor in Berglund and finding out what kind of on-the-field chops he might have (if that happens) and I'm really chomping at the bit to see how well it all comes together. Plus, almost half of the games will be easily accessible on TV, which hasn't been the case for me in a few years, so I won't be as homesick for Texas during a few weekends.

  28. Well, considering the average pf in the nba is 6'9" and he's 6'9", then not much.

  33. 1. I think I'm clearly on-record as a Berglund supporter, but Thompson should improve (at least somewhat) over this offseason. How much will he improve? We won't know until Idaho. If he's not improved enough, Berglund can step in. 2. I don't know that we really needed an upgrade at RB. But Pegram may surprise. I think we may be a little spoiled with our run of 12 years of awesome backs from Ja'Quay - Lance. 3. No real retort here. If Abbe is gone for good, and I kinda hope he is, then the D-Line will basically hang on the shoulders of SirCalvin's progress over this offseason... unless there's some sleeper that will come up to man the nose. I like our other D-Linemen (Boutwell, Sarge, Bellazin, Lincoln, etc...) But just looking at the team from the sidelines, this certainly appears to be the weak spot. And D-Line is definitely not a good place to have a weak spot. 4. I dunno man. At least this season it certainly isnt. After Tulsa/ECU bail, maybe. Tulsa/ECU would probably wipe the floor with anyone in the Belt. 5. This season must be the crux. 5-7 should be the minimum for him to keep his job, I think (Idaho & UTSA are must-wins). Any worse and it may be time for Rick to hit up the Rolodex. 6. Yep. That's what it's looking like.

  36. I'm always excited about the start of another football season. There is nothing, however, about this UNT team or conference that excites me. 1). No upgrade at QB 2) No upgrade at RB 3) Defensive front should rank at the bottom of league. 4) New league maybe worse than what we just Left. 5). Return of sub-500 coaching staff. 6). Another sub-500 record on the horizon

  37. More interest than anticipation. I don't think that DT is capable of a lot better showing than we've seen. If he remains the starter, we'll be mediocre. Ditto for McNulty, except that his upside might be a little more promising since he is more mobile. But, if Berglund is hitting on all cylinders then this could be a fun season. Regardless of who is quarterback, we'll have to develop defensive linemen (especially tackles) if we have very much success. If that happens, and that's a very big if, the defense may be at, or near, the best in CUSA.

  38. I agree with this completely - and not as a shot toward the coaching/gameplan. Similar to Tebow in college, TM was asked to play a certain role/style because it fit best given the players around him. The result is incomplete evaluation tape when trying to project to a position that requires a different skill set. I think TM's slowly climbing up draft boards because coaches see his athleticism and think they can coach this skill set into him (as McDaniels saw Tebow's ability and thought he could coach better mechanics into him). I don't mean the comparison to suggest their success tracks will be similar but simply in the inability to use his time in Denton as the sole tool for projecting. My conclusion is that he needs a situation where he fully embraces the challenge of developing what may not come easily. Ceiling: Rodman Floor: Beasley

  39. Google, Facebook, or whatever Site you visit tracking your browsing for ad purposes, as invasive as it is, is not the same thing as a governing body tracking what sites you visit, viewing private chat logs, viewing your emails, and looking at your pictures. I have NO problem tracking a potential suspect. But get a damn warrant. If they need help, they have classes on the proper way to write warrants.

  40. That's because he hit everything he put up, including from 15 feet and beyond. He had a career game. Probably wouldn't happen again if those 2 teams played 20 straight games.

  42. To be very honest, what you will find here is a split camp. We made a terrible hire at head coach, and that head coach's inability to adjust to injury, subbing players in and out every 2 minutes, pulling players from the game for every physical and mental error, and just plain bad bench coaching caused a visible lack of intensity from every player, save one. But none of the others are potential NBA draft picks, so we don't focus on that. Physically, Mitchell is exactly what you need to guard Lebron. Problem is, you would be taking a risk because you will have to teach Mitchell how to defend at the NBA level ( UNT coaching staff failed miserably in TMs development, how much of that is TMs fault and how much is coaching is a BIG point of debate here). But here is the deal: TM came here as an academic risk and was an A, B honor roll student. TM has been nothing but a solid citizen at UNT and a class act with his comments at the combine. TM is bigger and stronger than George. Very similar in build to Lebron. TMs shooting motion from outside needs to be re-worked. A good NBA shooting coach and a year or two should make him a decent outside shooter (for those of you that doubt this, go take a look at Lebrons 3 PT % his rookie year). The skinny: TM has all the tools to be a top 5 pick, and has the physical tools to be an above average NBA player if not an elite NBA player. If you believe TM will work hard at his shot in the league, take him. If you don't, pass. But if you pass, I promise you, you will be sorry. But I doubt OKC needs to worry. I think TM will be long gone before your pick (unless you have someone else's #1 that I don't know about)

  43. We might know a little more about his on ball defense if he'd ever been able to play anything but center here. I don't think people on here are going to recognize the player they see at the next level.

  44. Texas State will follow a very similar trail in the SBC that we did. The SBC teams are still improving each year and Texas State's fans won't care one bit about playing any of them. ULM, ULL, Arky State, and Troy are all waaayyyy ahead of them right now. They will still get some in-state games on the road against the Big 12 teams, but I doubt they will see any CUSA school in this state on their schedule anytime soon. UTSA will look down their noses at TSU-SM if they get their program off to a good start. It will be very SMU-UNT, La Tech-ULM, esque. I think Franchione is a very good coach and I believe he will do fine at Texas State, but I don't see any Texas schools offering them any help by shceduling them, especially in San Marcos. Welcome to our previous world, Bobcats...you'll find that it is not easy to get fans excited about playing SBC teams, especially those in the Eastern parts of their conference.

  45. Private insurance is incredibly expensive, I have a client paying $900/month each for a Blue Cross plan. It's hard to say exactly where its going to be in 15-20 years from now, but I expect that it will continue to be expensive. I'm a young guy that also plans to retire very early, but my definition of retirement is a little different. I plan to work part time from years 50-66 so I can get some benefits but also enjoy life. I'll echo what UNT90 said above and also add the importance of maxing out retirement plan contributions. It's better to put more money into your 401k and IRA than focus on paying down your mortgage as fast as possible. Speaking of your mortgage (assuming you have one), have you refinanced lately? Rates have certainly gone up from their bottom a few months ago, but they're still at historically low levels. Try not to factor Social Security into your retirement income stream.

  46. The fact that you are asking the question and planning so far in advance means to me that you will be fine. The biggest thing is to stay as debt free as possible, save as much as possible, (while still living your life), start a college fund now if you have/are planning on having kids, and seek advice from a professional financial planner. You don't have to give the guy a percentage of your investments. You can just go periodically to someone you feel comfortable with for financial check ups. About once every 3 years should do it. You may want to up it to once every year or bi-yearly when you get into your 40s. Having a strategy is a must. As far as health insurance, no one can really offer any advice without knowing your employment situation and retirement benefits. This is why a planner is so important. Sounds like you are already on top of it. It's not people like you us old guys worry about.

  47. Forget the stats; look at what happened during the year. Franklin was a much larger part of the team because other than Mitchell who admittedly played less than inspired ball, NT had no inside game and Franklin benefited from everyone concentrating on Tony. However, I do think he upped his game. Jones and Jordan Williams should have gotten much better in their sophomore year, they didn't. Alzee played his usual game but apparently didn't impress Benford at all. I don't think Niko improved much but he did play more.. The mark of a good coach is to make the team better than you would expect with players he has, Benford went totally the opposite way.
