So I got a little bored this weekend and had nothing better to do, so I made a fan video for the upcoming season. Anyways, just thought I'd share. I'm in no way a professional. Football season needs to get here already! Fixing the bass issue now. Should have another version soon. Click here to view the article11 points

Should have asked them if Gaines has more offense than their 2002 New Orleans Bowl team.. Pow Pow8 points

I happened upon tickets to see Social Distortion, who, by the way, is every bit as good in concert today as they ever have been. I drove up to Tulsa with zero expectations. Boy was I surprised. Downtown was a LOT of fun. Great, quirky restaurants, bars for the serious beer drinker, and the strangest bowling alley you ever did see. Easy four hour drive from Lewisville. I think I've just added that away game to my calendar.3 points

They have been doing this for years. If we were a part of the elite, we would likely do the same thing.3 points

I thought this was a UNT sports board. My bad for the mistake. I guess?3 points

I'm much more concerned about our ability to score in the Red Zone than I am about any part of our defense. Last season only 3 CUSA teams had a better scoring defense and 4 a better total defense. If we just hold where we are on defense and crank up the offense for some more points we'll win more games in '13.3 points

None of the major recruiting services show any commits for us. I believe that we do have one legitimate commit. Jonahvan Graham apparently did not participate in camps from which the ratings are drawn. Nor has he or his coach notified 247, Rivals, ESPN or Scout of his commitment to North Texas. Until that happens he likely will be neither listed or rated. I don't believe that Shaquel Jackson has committed and I don't believe that he will until he knows that Baylor won't offer. Has anyone heard if we will use all of our 25 scholarships or will some be held back for walkons?2 points

The big news is that they will no longer allow the mens and womens teams to mingle2 points

I think the thing about both of our lines is fairly simple. You have the OL being developed fairly effectively by McCarney, since he is known for this as his specialty. Dodge left him with some decent pieces there and he has actually been able to develop some recruiting pieces into nice parts on the OL. The DL is a different deal, just because everyone recruits this position so hard. Since we aren't very good at recruiting here, the key then becomes in development and in out-of-the-box strategies on this. Patterson at TCU has made his name on recruiting RBs or LBs at of high school as seeing them as projects that can be developed into DLinemen. This is how you turn 3 star kids into All-American candidates. Coach Mac is going to have to do something similar here. He cannot--for whatever reasons--get top talent here from high schools, and since this is the premier place that everyone targets in recruiting, we are going to have to get better at development, whether its getting DLinemen from high schools that are lowly regarded and can be developed by your coaching and S&C program, or by following the recipe that Patterson has incorporated at TCU. McCarney is a good caoch and I actually believe he will continue to coach up the talent on the roster that is improving with each year, at least as compared to 2010 when he took the job. He knows that this is a results business and that a good year in 2013 probably gets him an extension, or at least keeps him from entering 2014 on the hot seat. It was going to take a while to rebuild this thing up and his 3rd year should be a year that we see better results. His mentor, Hayeden Fry, won 5 games his first year here, then went 2-7-2 in his 2nd season. We all know by now what the thrid year and beyond looked like. This is what I think will happen here, too. But the DL and the QB are absolute musts to have better play from or this is all a moot point. And Coach Mac knows that, which I think is why we will see better results this year than last year. It wouldn't surprise me to see a slow start to the year, something like 1-3 in OOC, but to end up the year with 5-6 wins once conference play comes around. Idaho, UTSA, Tulane, UTEP, Southern Miss, La Tech, and MUTS are all beatable. For that matter, so are Rice and Tulsa if things fall the right way, but expecting 5-6 wins in 2013 is not too much. And this is coming from someone who predicted we would be lucky to win 4 games in 2011 and probably would finish with 4 wins in 2012. I'm usually as realistic as I can be about the schedule and the state of the program, which is why I truly believe we will see an improvement in our record this fall.2 points

This huge financial gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" has been going on for quite awhile now. In fact, it seems the elite of the NCAA are trying to close all future membership to their club. GMG!2 points

That's all fine and good, but he didn't go 0-12 against all Big 5 teams. 8 of his losses were against CUSA competition. So... maybe float out another excuse?2 points

One of our fellow alums (who got a law degree and then an MD) has an office in NY that sounds like it may be about like what you guys are talking about. What I find eerie is the fact that with all of the discussion of medicine and healthcare, no one has mentioned the fact that lobbyists and corporate money, not parties, are what have really determined the direction this country has taken as far as that policy area is concerned. Even the conservative parties in other advanced countries agree with what some have mentioned here, and that is that the taxes and costs to "consumers" are reduced with well-planned and available healthcare programs. The numbers don't lie...they pay a much smaller percentage of their total income for all forms of care and aren't denied coverage. My point is that it isn't a conservative vs. liberal argument as it is usually painted (even by proponents of both sides in this country), but rather a complete system failure. Between the lobbyists and their employers, that's where most of the extra goes, with a little bit being paid to some of the most loyal doctors as well as the "costs" to contribute to political campaigns, so the politicians (who of course still draw a fat paycheck from our tax dollars and get tons of fringe benefits) get quite a kickback...but if we weren't paying all that extra money for healthcare, wouldn't there be extra money for campaign contributions from the REST of us instead of just big lump sums from the few who have basically fixed the game? As to the educational angle, the actual educators here have made some really hard-hitting points. I'd like to add a question...why is it that North Texas, known for a century as educating educators, has so many in that major complaining that their GPA requirements for graduation are too high? Who knows, maybe it was just while I was there, but aside from the "everybody paying for an education deserves a degree" argument, the most bizarre thing I ever heard was from College of Ed students who didn't think it was fair that their GPA requirement was higher than others. Now, maybe some of the ideas brought up here would help, but really, aside from doctors and maybe lawyers, shouldn't teachers (as their knowledge of material can be the key to other peoples' futures) be expected to excel academically more than most other majors? I understand if you want to throw in a couple of other professions for consideration, but my point is that when your grades are a direct reflection of your capacity to provide a future for those served by your profession, then yes, those majors should have higher degree requirements. And since we only require certification - and not an additional degree - from teachers, then their GPA for their Bachelor's degree should be expected to be a bit higher than many others. Not to sound like a turncoat, but have you seen how few of my fellow art students graduate Cum Laude (not counting those who major in Art Ed or Art History)? I don't think it's unreasonable to say that a studio artist should still show a moderate level of proficiency in all areas to gain a degree, whereas an educator should have more considerable academic credentials as they are, in fact, the next generation of academia at some level or another. Though I haven't looked at requirements in the last few years, what the difference boiled down to was that most other majors required a C or C minus average for graduation whereas Education required a B minus. I'm certainly not one for unfair or authoritative rulings, but I wasn't ready to take on that fight for the Education majors, because it seems reasonable that those who pass down the precepts of education should be slightly more well-versed and capable in that arena themselves. In short, if your academic abilities and/or effort are enough to "squeak by" in order to pursue your career, then fine. But if those abilities and that effort are less than what we hope to see in our children's classrooms, then how can we ever hope to provide a decent education for anyone learning from people who could barely pass muster on their own? Don't misunderstand this, I'm not saying that all teachers are incompetent, but I don't think any of us would want our children "learning" from someone who was only able to graduate by getting the grade requirements lowered. I would love to see better pay, better curricula, better results, etc. but really, lowering the requirements for those attempting to follow that career path certainly isn't the answer and has bothered me for over a decade, ever since the underachievers who opposed the standards brought it to my attention. Changing that attitude before some of these people ever take over a classroom might help in the long run.2 points

Don't worry. It was obvious that you were placing NT sports on par with life changing events like the death of a parent. I simply can't see how anyone with a pulse WOULDN'T make that logic leap.2 points

Call me a homer, but I'm really excited about Syd Moore and Alex Lincoln this year. I'm thinking that Moore, Wallace, and Reinhardt will allow us to play Lincoln, and maybe Boutwell, on the outside more. I think Moore will be Freshman all conference and Lincoln will get at least some honorable mention for all conference. Come on guys, prove me right!2 points

I hope the go 0-12. I just cannot root for anyone that we might have to compete against for recruits. If they start to win in the Sun Belt, it could get a litle closer to happening.2 points

Like most regimes, the game tapes from the previous coach will be destroyed to solidify the 'nothing good happened before I got here' mind set. Hope I am wrong...I know how carelessly our history has been destroyed over the years by various regimes.1 point

You need to understand this (and most, outside of Houston fans, DO understand this): The longer Sumlin is gone, the faster the window will close. Your first taste was the loss last season to TX St. (Sumlin would have throttled them). This year's taste? UTSA?? Make no mistake, if Houston does not win the AAC and force themselves into a BCS bowl THIS YEAR, you're not going anywhere and your momentum under Sumlin will be totally gone. Then, you're stuck in the AAC. Forever.1 point

I am sorry for picking on this post.... But here we go. Not everythIng in this world is the best or the worst.... Their stadium was nice. Style was unique, matched the building style on campus..... Wasn't very big. But, so what... It was kind of a neat stadium that fits their needs. The word sucked never entered my mind when visiting Tulsa.... Except the score. This drives me nuts...especially when others apply this commentary towards our stadium....because it only holds 31k or so....1 point

If it weren't for the horrible showing by the football team last year, our trip to Tulsa would have been epic. 2 days of golf, staying at the hardrock casino... 'twas a blast anyway... At least we had Texas rangers updates to occupy us during the dibocle in tulsa. Btw, tulsa's campus and stadium were nice.... Enjoyed the walk thru campus...1 point

He is an NBA talent, but clearly he did not cut it here. That is where the disappointment came from. It is true that scours said he was not an NBA caliber yet, but most people knew once he got to the combine he would turn some heads. Even last year his NBA draft stock slipped. Maybe he was not a good fit in his two years here, or maybe he just did not give 100% effort. Even so he always had the NBA body and NBA ability.1 point

Easy. K-9 vitamin deficiencies as well as K-9 tooth decay coincide with global warming because they are byproducts of the increased air temperature that George Bush created when he used his septor to cause hurricane Katrina due to his disdain for Kanye West. Didn't you know the oil drilling created the earthquakes that caused the catastrophic tsunamis that killed so many people in Japan and Indonesia? Ok, where to start... The original post was to talk about 2013 high school recruits that are coming in. Not guys that were ready to compete on the college level while they are currently in high school. They wil have 4 to 5 years to improve for college. If you are one of the best in the state of Texas in high school track, then you are probably one of the tops in the nation. Most of these athletes I mentioned went to the state track meet. Out of thousands of track athletes in the country, they are ranked in the top 10%. That's better than good. OK, the final point of not being close to competitive on the college level...I will take their best times IN HIGH SCHOOL, and see how they stack up against college competition. I will compare their times to the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships. My post stated that they may not be able to run open events, but can become strong leg on the relays. John Shelleci ran a 10.56 this year. No wind. 10.50 Won the Gold in the Sun Belt TFC. 10.56 would have won Bronze and gave UNT 6 extra points. UNT did not even field a 4x100 but the winning time was 40.54. Bronze was 40.75. 4th place was 41.20. Chad Davis's state 4x100 team that placed 3rd at state ran faster with a 41.01. With the winning time being 40.54 athletes that are spliting 10.00 or lower are very competitive. Chad Davis and John Shelleci can split below a 10.00... Darvin Kidsey jumped a 6'9 which ranks amoung the nation's best. 2nd place at the Sun Belt TFC was 6'9. He scores points and possibly medals. in the 4x400, 3:15.76 placed 5th at the Sun Belt TFC. Davis and Fort Bend Bush's best time this year was 3:15.64. They would have beaten 4 college teams at the SBTFC. North Texas 4x400 placed 8th with a time of 3:20.66. They can use all the 48s and 47s they can get. I'm not even sure if all these guys plan on running track, but if these guys are added to the track team and they can build on what they have done in high school, UNT has made a significant improvement in the depth of the team and can surely put together some competitive relays that can lead to a conference championship and possibly something bigger in the future.1 point
