  4. I know this is not football related but Business Insider named Denton the best small town in America. I suspect all those that live there tend to take this for granted and that's natural, but Denton really is a unique place. Let's hope that with all the development on Fry St and such that the town does not lose any of its "Dentoness" http://www.businessinsider.com/the-ten-best-small-towns-in-america-2012-11#10-tybee-island-georgia-1

  6. While at the Mean Green Club Phonathon, I snapped a few pics while I had the rare opportunity to be on the press level at Apogee. Since this is an area a lot of folks don't normally get to see, I thought I'd share. The quality isn't that great since I took them from my iPhone.

  11. Just things I had heard... Closer to home and the move mad sense. Either way I think we are better off. We have a lot of solid guards but next season it will be time to bring in a solid guard class again..

  12. I suppose the more you say it the easier it is for you to believe. My point was that ever since Lebron came out and started this whole I am more important then anyone else mentality everyone thinks they need to do the same. Me me this and my talents that....

  13. I don't why people kept saying he was transferring to FIU. Maybe it was just you or maybe it was his mom , but it is standard procedure NOT to grant releases to conference opponents. He was never going to FIU or FAU

  16. We wasted a second on Martellus Bennett to try this 12 offense and we've done it again this year, I'm not saying the kid will fail but the whole premise just seems to defy logic. For years and years we have heard them justify their reaching for project players, at some point the scouting staff needs to be replaced when those projects repeatedly fail. Jerry continues to refer to the d line as a strength. Where are the ******* players who are strengths? Wouldn't it make 8000x more sense to draft a replacement for your aging DIU stricken d-line then an additional TE for personnel reasons. Hankins was there at 47 (Went to Giants at 48) Floyd was there at 18. I guess we can hope that somehow Jery Jr. has watched all these mistakes over the last 18 years and is taking note of what NOT to do. I can't fathom the thought of playoff-less football for much longer.

  17. Not sure what to think on Webb the CB from W&M. Once again not really a need position. Still could use a O-linemen, DT, and RB. Does this mean anything for Scandrick and his fat contract?

  18. How many teams use a 2 TE set anywhere near the way the Pats do? I'd love for it to work here. Escobar has some big ole mitts like Gronk.
    1 point
  19. I don't love the pick but a 2nd TE isn't necessarily a second teamer. Would you consider either Gronk or Hernandez second teamers in New England?

  20. Who knows? But if KRAM didn't talk directly to "PJ", he didn't get the "whole story.," He got one side from people who have a stake in shaping opinions. And unless he was close to PJ, he still wouldn't get the whole story, as PJ isn't going to burn bridges while still seeking his release. Besides, it is the smart move not to lob a hand grenade as you exit the program, no latter the circumstances. My only hope is that people that matter, people like Fly on the Wall, won't put up with losing after next year, no matter their relationship with RV.

  21. I love Lance, but I think Denver got a steal with the running back from Wisconsin. I would have taken that kid in a heart beat over an overrated TE that will at best be a second teamer.

  23. First, PJ not being allowed to shoot came straight from his mom. Could she have been overreacting and not have the full story? Absolutely. But unless you had an honest conversation directly with PJ, you are only getting one side of the story, a side those telling you want you to hear. Could it be that PJ was told only to shoot it certain situations, and was scared that if he took the wrong shot, he would be instantly pulled and lose playing time. Surely Benford wasn't prone to that behavior, right? I fear this will be a pattern for as long as Benford manages to keep his job. 2-4 kids leave at the end of every year. The most telling comments were PJ saying he would have stayed if we were winning. That means, right or wrong, at least 1 player on that team didn't believe Benford could get it done, and that's one too many.

  24. Goodwin would have been a starter for the rest of her career if she would have stayed and probably had the school record for steals. Probably in our hall of fame. She wants to move up in competion. Good sun belt player, maybe not a good big 12 player, maybe not a starter. She needs to pick wisely. I wonder if she burned her bridges here. Pete has 1 ship left, i think. She can probably find a school that draws better. Crowds usually under 1000 here. Our attendance hurts us in both BB programs. I am talking long term - the past 30 years.

  26. You will find tons of kids at Jazzfest of all ages. It is definitely a kid friendly event. We often take "wee ones" with us when we attend and we took our kids for years running....no problems at all...lots of stuff for kids of all ages...hey, kids like music too, right?

  27. He showed me that he's a legit D1 player. I do think we have a better PG inCJ, but I had heard he wasn't happy with this staff. Despite the drivel coming out if benfords mouth during post games (after Rick finally made him grow up and be a big boy after losses) he was told not to shoot. If PJ wants to start then he will have to stay around this level, but I think he is good enough to play a good number of minutes at all but the very too level.

  31. Yes it was, as in we needed a second string TE. While we needed starters at both guard spots, right tackle, safety, and defensive tackle.

  34. As a student of Southlake-Carroll High from '92-'96, I can assure you we were not a powerhouse or close to phenomenal for the six years prior Dodge. Early-Eighties to Mid-Nineties, sure. Outside of the Ledbetter and Dodge years, success hasn't been easy.

  35. Denia folks are trying their hardest to make sure it stays best 'small town' (120k people = small town?) in America. I don't know if you mean good or bad on this. I live there and they drive me crazy. I won't attend their community meetings because they oppose everything. I guess that would be trying to keep it small. They opposed the stadium, the windmills, the dorm at Eagle Point, Acme Brick's operating permit and so many other things, I can't remember. And the proposed convention center? I'm sure. But I absolutely love where I live. It is physically the best place in the world to live. I try to keep as low of a profile as possible so they don;t oppose me.

  40. Wait, I thought last season happened because Benford couldn't control what college men wanted to do. So confused.

  41. Great post--the facilites improvements are great. But Apogee was a must, since Fouts couldn't even survive much longer. EIther APogee was gonna get funded and built or UNT Football was going to go the way of the dodo. The Mean Green Village, the Super Pit and its improvements, and Apogee are awesome. Very proud to see them and attend games at the venues. Love the tailgating scene and the Alumni Pavilion, too. Here's where we lack, though. When you make a mistake on a hire (or hires in our case), two things happen at almost every other university. 1.) The mistake is removed as soon as possible. If Benford wins less than 12 games next year (I think that's a given), he should be fired, period. I cannot believe he was kept after this past season, but that is part of the deal when you hire a coach sometimes is to give that coach a chance to right the ship, unless it is just too much. Southern Miss fired their coach in football after he went 0-12. They know that is just not acceptable to even try and give him another chance since he killed their momentum. 2.) The person who makes the bad hire(s) will pay a price--usually the ultimate price is the job as AD. In college sports, a coach makes the biggest difference in winning and losing. Look at the Aggies--under Franchione and Sherman, they couldn't get anything going. Then, they hire Sumlin, who had been a winner at UH, and voila, they find a freshman QB who redshirted under the previous coach, but once he gets to play, he wins the freaking Heisman. That coach knew how to put the right people in the right spot and now they are in the top 10. BTW, we saw the same things happened in Austin when Mack Brown took over and the obvious one was when Bob Stoops got to OU after John Blake. Both have taken a step or two back recently, but it doesn't take away from how important it is to bring in the right coach. We may have that in McCarney--I sure hope so, anyway--but what we have seen from RV in picking hires for $$$ sports--football, mens hoops, and womens hoops, has been below average at best. We've seen him hire Todd Dodge, Tony Benford, and Shanice Stephens--easily they may be the worst three hires for their sports in the school's history, which isn't all that bright to begin with. Coach Mac hasn't panned out yet, Peterson as the womens coach might, but we will have to see, and then he gets credit for Johnny Jones. That track record would never play out as even close to acceptable anywhere else that I can think of. In closing, UNT grades as this to me. Facilites=great job. Personnel=terrible job.

  42. It's not the commitment of the private donors (scoreboard, basketball practice facility), the students (Apogee Stadium), or the fundraising effort of the AD that led to some of the increases in facilities that I question. I do question the mindset that losing is ok and the mindset that allows a coach that is in way over his head to remain as head coach. Harry, you are right, you have to put disappointment behind you, but you also have to correct the decisions that led to that disappointment, or you risk experiencing that disappointment over and over and over again. If you will notice, I didn't go really negative until we refused to correct an obvious mistake in basketball. I see no way we win more than 10 games next year. Hope I'm wrong. But my question to you is, when is it enough? How can you expect Benford to win more games next year in a tougher conference with less talent? If he doesn't win 10 ganes next year, then what will the administration do about it? I submit nothing, because that really isn't their focus. Like Jim (?) has posted many times, there is not and probably will never be the appropriate emphasis on athletics at this university. Why do I say that? When your chancellor can't even defend a student athletics fee in Austin, a fee that UTSA and Tx St has x 2 over us, and allows that fee to be tied to paying off the stadium and future construction, that is an example of just not really caring about athletics . Why can't we have WHAT JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER PUBLIC UNIVERSITY IN TEXAS HAS? Has the athletic fee been raised? I don't think so, and we are allowed to raise it $2 per semester hour every year. If you are trying to fund an underfunded athletics department, why in the hell wouldn't you raise it ? It's just a lack of commitment to athletics. That's who we have always been and probably who we always will be. I'll eventually accept it, but it's gonna take some time.

  43. That's the reason though Harry, we shouldn't be rebuilding at this point, we should be reloading after what should've been a trip the the Dance.

  44. Rebuild after this failure of a season -- yes -- I hope we "turn the corner" and get back to at least .500 ball again. Harry, the last time we were at .500 ball was in the 2005-2006 season and the last time we had a losing record was in the 2004-2005 season.
