I didn't realize until yesterday that Keith Davis (Desoto HS) left A&M in mid December. This guy is a big center (6-10) who could help. Didn't really do much at A&M but is better than Coleman. May only have 1 year left after sitting out. Is the bigger brother of TCU signee 6-9 Karviar Sheppard (Prime Prep)2 points

Last 2 ships assuming ward can come on (we need his shooting potentially) we have to get at least one solid big still. Last year we seemed thin as well in the post with all of the injuries. To be honest we should be better... At least deeper. Holman, Overlander, and Patton really did nothing last year PJ and Niko were just decent contributors Tony and Franklin were the backbone of the team If any 3 of these guys can step up big we should be fine. It is not like we lost a lot of points, boards etc with all of these players leaving (minus Roger and Tony)2 points

What can we ban or impose an extensive background check for next after this guy finally snaps, lawnmower blades, hacksaws, can openers....? http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/Man-who-dismembered-corpse-released-in-Fort-Worth-203866561.html ....."FORT WORTH -- Police and family members say he's dangerous, and now he's been released in Fort Worth. News 8 told you about Daniel Wayne Staley in March. He was placed in a mental hospital after digging up a corpse and cutting off it's foot. In journals, he's threatened to kill people. His family says he means it. Staley was dropped off near downtown Fort Worth Friday at a homeless shelter with only a bag of clothes.... .....Staley's been in and out of jail and hospitals since he was 10 years old. He told News 8 he enjoys killing cats and dogs. "It was fascinating to kill animals, to kill something," he said. His journals are troubling. He describes wanting to kill people and watch them suffer. But he said it's all creative writing....." Rick2 points

Rick you are as mentally disturbed as this guy if you think I'd been in favor of letting this guy out, but as quoted in the story, "By law, the state says he cannot be kept in a mental institution indefinitely." This is a law that your Republican controlled Texas government has had plenty of time to alter, and make tougher. But just like the the fifth amendment says, "Due process." You should know that amendment well as it was tought in every political science class in high school. If objectionable writing was an offense that could cause someone to be locked up, I think a number of the people on this board, including you and I could be in trouble. But thoughts are not illegal, actions are. The courts have decided, I decision that I do not agree with, that this gentleman is not a threat to society. Looks like the Republican lawmakers of Texas have failed us again. Andrew I can't decide if your comment: "Background checks on all purchases of ball bearings, nails, and pressure cooker as well... Also we need to limit the amount of each an individual can purchase." is laughable or proof that or education system has failed. And MDH, I agree with you, but that's up to Harry, it's his board. and no one, is forced to read any post in any forum. Not sure why the original thread was locked, except the admins did not want to have to police the thread and have to lock it down because it would eventually turn into a Conservative vs. Liberal thread.1 point

I know several members of the EF coaching staff. Eric King got screwed. He took the football team to the state semifinals this year. The school board wouldn't renew his contract because one of the member's son wasn't getting enough playing time. I am glad to hear a UNT alum got the job, but I hope the same thing doesn't happen to Scott Ford.1 point

Your 2008 graduation explains much with your posts over here. This below from another thread with a few additional comments about your TCU; albeit a year or 2 dated thoughts from the internet it still indicates problems at the turnstiles for even Top 10 ranked TCU football teams and come on now..............what are your true underlying fears and insecurities about North Texas which can easily be seen between the lines of your posts? Is it that UNT's Metroplex constituency,ie, enormous enrollment, home city and county population base, DFW alumnus numbers, etc, etc, etc, are about 10 X's larger than TCU's? And you tell your Coach Patt' his pipe dream for TCU being "the Metroplex college football team" will not be possible because of a large state of Texas public university like North Texas (and even SMU) and that is no matter what conference your school is presently a member (with the Big 12's "present" membership hardly set in stone)....Casepoint: Texas A & M who left the Big 12 for what is turning out to be a successful run in the SEC--you don't think DeLoss Dodd's and OU's AD are noticing that-----think again. ______________________________________________________________ And below in bold letters are a few internet notes about TCU's attendance even during your team's winning years. You obviously were not around ACS during the Frog's decade and a half of losing years (as I was) to see how losing teams affected TCU's attendance. One of major criticisms regarding TCU during the last several years has been that TCU, in spite of its great success of the football field and its location in a top-10 market, has failed to attract a large home crowd. (I say: It's amazing how long it takes some area school's fans to discover they have something very special with their football team and then later in a season to finally start showing up on Game Day. Slow starts, early money game disappointments and lets face some facts here, not our best football teams in our 100 year history at North Texas have hurt our attendance building momentum--even during our bowl years last decade. In DFW, its best to have a good season start (with early wins) to have good season long turnstile numbers). In 2005, in spite of its top-10 finish and 11-1 season, TCU only averaged 31,254 at home. (I say: Apogee Stadium would have had a large enough capacity for that Frog football team). Again, in 2008, TCU finished at No. 7 in the polls and averaged just 30,389 (I say once again: Apogee Stadium would have been large enough for that TCU team). From 2005 to 2008, TCU averaged just 30,897 fans. (I say: I think North Texas with a string of winning seasons will reach those kind of numbers with our constituency of close to 37,000 students, approx. 700,000 pop. in Denton County and over 200,000 NT Exes living in the Metroplex; in fact, past losing seasons will create doubting Thomases from our own but it should still be a piece of cake for UNT to get such numbers once the win cycle begins again and................ with most of those in attendance at Apogee Stadium still being our own fans since (as is always the case in our athletic history) we will not be seeing many UT or OU travelling fans at Apogee to seal the deal on easy sellouts). IMO, our AD still needs to schedule the Texas Longhorns in Denton if possible to show all our DFW area Froggie fans and supporters just how easy it is to sell out Apogee. Who knows maybe a winning football program at the DFW Metroplex's largest university will make "OUR" school "The Metroplex's College Football Team." Even with TCU in the Big 12, it is still a private school affiliated with a small membership Disciples of Christ denomination. GMG!1 point

A lot of credit for this goes to the academic support folks in the athletic department. Compared to how things were when I first arrived at UNT, they have really stepped up monitoring of student athlete performance in the classroom over the course of the semester. I now get a request for information on the status of athletes in my classes every couple of weeks from the athletic department.1 point

I'd say yes. Threw INTs more often than Thompson Matt Barkley, USC: 15 in 387 = 1 every 25.8 / Trojans 7-6, lost Sun Bowl Munchie Legaux, Cincinnati: 9 in 230 = 1 every 25.56 / Bearcats 10-3, won Belk Bowl Gary Nova, Rutgers: 16 in 388 = 1 every 24.25 / Scarlet Knights 9-4, lost Russell Athletic Bowl Sean Mannion, Oregon St.: 13 in 309 = 1 every 23.77 / Beavers 9-4, lost Alamo Bowl Riley Nelson, BYU: 13 in 308 = 1 every 23.69 / Cougars 8-5, won Poinsettia Bowl Steele Jantz, Iowa St.: 12 in 269 = 1 every 22.42 / Cyclones 6-7, lost Liberty Bowl Bo Wallace, Ole Miss: 17 in 368 = 1 every 21.65 / Rebels 7-6, won BBVA Compass Bowl Derek Thompson, UNT: 14 interceptions in 369 attempts = 1 interception thrown for every 26.35 pass attempts Threw INTs less often than Thompson Jake Medlock, FIU 2 in 263 = 1 every 131.5 / Golden Panthers 3-9 Jacob Karam, Memphis: 3 in 274 = 1 every 91.33 / Tigers 4-8 Graham Wilbert, FAU: 6 in 405 = 1 every 67.5 / Owls 3-9 Shaun Rutherford, Texas St.: 5 in 299 = 1 every 59.8 / Bobcats 4-8 Tanner Price, Wake Forest: 7 in 410 = 1 every 58.57 / Demon Deacons 5-7 Brett Smith, Wyoming: 6 in 330 = 1 every 55 / Cowboys 4-8 Rakeem Cato, Marshall: 11 in 584 = 1 every 53.10 / Thundering Herd 5-7 Phillip Sims, Virginia: 4 in 203 = 1 every 50.75 / Cavaliers 4-8 James Vandenberg, Iowa: 8 in 389 = 1 every 48.63 / Hawkeyes 4-8 Corey Robinson, Troy: 9 in 389 = 1 every 43.22 / Trojans 5-7 Zac Dysert. Miami (OH): 12 in 480 = 1 every 40 / RedHawks 4-8 Tyler Bray, Tennessee: 12 in 451 = 1 every 37.58 / Volunteers 5-7 Cameron Coffman, Indiana: 11 in 407 = 1 every 37 / Hoosiers 4-8 Chase Rettig, Boston College: 13 in 467 = 1 every 35.92 / Eagles 2-10 Ryan Griffin, Tulane: 11 in 394 = 1 every 35.82 / Green Wave 2-10 Andrew Manley, New Mexico St = 11 in 384 = 1 every 34.91 / Aggies 1-11 Mike Wegzyn, U Mass = 10 in 346 = 1 every 34.6 / Minutemen 1-11 Travis Wilson, Utah = 6 in 204 = 1 every 34 / Utes 5-7 James Franklin, Missouri: 7 in 234 = 1 every 33.43 / Tigers 5-7 Jordan Webb, Colorado = 8 in 265 = 1 every 33.13 / Buffaloes 1-11 Dalton Williams, Akron = 16 in 522 = 1 every 32.63 / Zips 1-11 Tyler Wilson, Arkansas = 13 in 401 = 1 every 30.85 / Razorbacks 4-8 Nathan Scheelhasse, Illinois: 8 in 246 = 1 every 30.75 / Fighting Illini 2-10 And, so, because football is a team sport, it's important to recognize that UNT wins and loses as a team. Quarterback is not even close to our biggest concern. Schools who had quarterbacks that threw more interceptions per attempts still made bowl. Many whose quarterbacks threw fewer didn't qualify for bowls. A football team is comprised of three components - the offense, the defense, and the special teams. We could have a quarterback throw 400+ passes and less than 10 INTs and still have a losing record. We could have a quarterback average almost two a game and still go to a bowl game. Derek, Derek, he's our man, if he can't do it, maybe the special teams and defense can. But, hopefully, all three units will have great years.1 point

Or what? He gets fired and we start over? We stop going to games? Apogee collapses into a pile of rubble? If we lose this year, nothing happens. Treating this year as all or nothing won't get us a better record this year. But playing a lot of youngsters might make us better down the road. Dodge's last class included a lot of JUCOs so most of that class is gone. You're saying that a coach has to win with RS Sophmores? That first class was recruited late in the game. Which means we've had one regular class last year and an incoming class this year. We've had 3 winning seasons in eighteen years of FBS football and now we expect to win in year three? That ain't happening. Yeah, I expect that Mac's fourth recruting class would be better than his first. But his first two classes were average Sun Belt classes at best and to expect us to win with that talent is just unreasonable. Especially with a below average quarterback. Has a coach won within three years before? Absolutely. I'm just not expecting it here. Certainly not after watching this team last year. If we had the talent I'd be singing a different tune but we don't. We can't rush the quarterback and get below average play out of the quarterback. If Mac can win with that, he really is a genius.1 point

Fantastic News! Great job student-athletes! You know, this sort of thing does not happen in a vacuum. There has to be an emphasis on academics from the AD down, with the ultimate responsibility falling upon the student-athletes themselves. GREAT JOB! This sort of news really makes me proud as very very few of these athletes will go on to have careers as professional athletes. But, as the NCAA ad says...they will be professionals in some career field. Great work students and great job from the department placing the emphasis on academics and providing tools and resources to make this happen. WELL DONE!1 point

Again, this is where it gets silly. "Some kid, classroom full of guns" Geez, this language is only rhetoric and not very good rhetoric, at that. As a professor, I realize that if guns are permitted to be carried on campus, as they are permitted to be carried elsewhere...with largely no accidents, then I have a better chance against a "shooter" IF I'M CARRYING, than if I'm not. I won't depend on others, regardless of age or skill, to defend my life. This isn't the military and a concealed handler is not ordered to defend anyone's life.1 point
-
So, do you think that if you carried one of these guns into a classroom, you would suddenly have the urge to shoot someone? Do you think that what you know about gun safety would suddenly disappear? Do you keep any loaded guns at home? If so, don't you spend a lot more time at home than in a classroom, and wouldn't that mean that you were far more likely to have a gun accident at home? And we have to be talking about gun accidents, right? Because anyone who WANTS to intentionally commit gun violence (shoot people) isn't going to say "wow, I can't carry my gun in there, it's against the law." And if that person shows up in your classroom and shoots you before you can get to your weapon, wouldn't you want one of your students (assuming we are talking college here) to be arm so that he could protect him/herself and the rest of the class? Again, this should be left up to the individual universities at the college level and to the individual school districts, not the state or federal government. Government is always better practiced at the local level.1 point
-
This is where the conversation starts going south due to exaggerations. A bunch of guns in my classroom? I am indifferent to "a bunch of guns in my classroom." I have "a bunch of guns" at home and they haven't caused any problems; in fact, they pretty much keep to themselves. With concealed carry permits, you are unaware of the amount of guns in the classroom, hallway, bathroom, courtyard, etc...because they are concealed by trained and licensed individuals. I would only be aware of the one I was in charge of. There is no "ideal" of a university. There is a reality of theUniversity I work for. In that reality, a person is relatively defenseless in the event of a rogue shooter. I would like that to be changed. At "THE U", we always crave a completely-safe-environment. That should outweigh less safe environments.1 point
-
Seriously? You don't make a teacher carry a gun, you allow them to carry one if they want to, if the administration agrees that they are capable, and if they go through the conceal carry course.1 point
-
We don't. We need the right coach. This insistance upon only hiring D-1 head coaches because hiring Dodge and Stephens were train wrecks is the same logic Tom Hicks used in not spending money on the Rangers...well I tried with Chan Ho and it didn't work so I'm not trying again. The template wasn't broken...just the decision. That said...no to this dude...I don't want anyone associated with Buzz Williams near this program. I still think my short list is Capel and Forrest.1 point
