  1. We will not win 4 games with Thompson as our QB next season, I don't care what kind of spring he had. ESPECIALLY if we are changing to more of a zone read offense. I was hoping that Brock would come out and dominate...he didn't...and if that leaves Thompson as our best option, we are honestly in trouble. It isn't that he is a bad guy, not tough, doesn't bleed green...he just isn't accurate and doesn't possess the arm to be an effective QB. I know some will mention the WRs last season...but in response to that I will mention the HUGE amount of errant throws that were thrown every game that had nothing to do w/ WRs. He is not a runner, not an accurate passer, doesnt have a quick release, and I wouldn't say he has a big arm. My only hope this season is that Brock can win it in fall practice before Idaho comes to town. I am going to, for the first time since I've been watching the Mean Green, come into the season with negative expectations this season if DT is our QB because our offense will continue not to score. FIFTEEN years I've been a homer calling for bowl games, and if DT is our QB it will be the first I will be predicting less than 4 wins...AND the first time EVER I will not be eagerly anticipating the start of the season. If I'm wrong, I wil gladly eat crow...I just don't see that happening w/ DT as our QB...sorry to seem negative...just trying to vent honestly.

  2. What press clippings does BB have to read? He didn't even get a mention in the FWST story. The kid injures his hamstring and all of a sudden people label him a diva who hasn't grasped the offense yet. Stupid.

  3. I agree w/ you completely about the QB situation, and your point that its not all DT's fault. My point is simply that if DT is the best we have, it won't be good enough to win more than 4 games

  6. Thanks to everyone who played, volunteered, donated and sponsored this year's GMG.Com Bowl X. It was an epic in that soon to be LT. EMMITT'S team won for the first time on a late TD catch and run by none other than Brian Futrell. Final score was 9-7 in a close one..looks like defense actually ruled the day. While all silent auction and player fees are yet to be collected...no problem, they will be but it will take a day or two...or three or four...it appears that we were able to raise in excess of $4000.00 from the event this year! Great news I would think. Hey, not oly did Emmitt's team win, but we had an announcer, Tony DeSousa, for the very first time! Nice job, Tony. And, Jordan Case flipped the coin to start the game this year. How great is that? Also...a shout out to Emmitt for the great cookies! I hope everyone got to taste those things...all I can say is, the guy could sell them and make some decent bucks! Folks, all kidding aside...those things were greatness! State Fair prize winning capabilities for sure! Thanks for baking them and brining them...yummy! Your participation is very much appreciated! You made a positive contribution to the Mean Green program and, hopefully, you had fun doing it....I did! Hope to see everyone for GMG.Com Bowl XI next year!!!! 9. I hate the argument that "he has been a good soldier so we owe it to DT to let him start". That is the argument of fans of a losing team who are okay with continuing to be a losing team, at all costs.

  11. See, the people who would rather see Berglund over DT have nothing personal against him as a person. He is still a member of our team and we wish only the best for him, but you're making this argument about who is the best fit for us at quarterback personal to Berglund.

  12. I don't think he is a diva. My speculation that he is still learning the offense comes from observing him interacting with Canales all day during the scrimmage. I hope it clicks because he has athleticism that we have rarely, if ever, seen at the QB position in Denton. Reminds me of a bigger Scott Davis. DT looks the same, just a little lighter, which is good and bad. His TD pass late was an excellent throw, but then his next one will be a wobbler down field. It is frustrating because he has all the physical tools. McNulty stood out to me. Poised in the pocket, pretty consistent throwing the ball except for one at a wide open receivers feet. His glaring weakness is having an awareness of pressure and protecting the ball.

  15. What players were better than expected and got your attention? My number one is James Jones. Although he did get beat once for a TD, he was all over the field defending passes. He had an interception and I noticed tight coverage on his man nearly every time. Darius Terrell made several grabs...usually in traffic. We knew that he was supposed to be good and he didn't disappoint. Carlos Harris. He did a credible job last year replacing Chancellor but he was a force Saturday. I believe that he may have been the only one to have beaten James Jones all day. Darnell Smith was also rather impressive. He will contend for a starting position this fall. The least impressive receiver this game was Brelan Chancellor. He had a couple of drops which is unusual for the sure-handed receiver. Aaron Bellazin and Chad Polk. This speed tandem at defensive end may give opponents fits. That combination is really working because a tackle cannot drop back quickly enough to hold them off. The duo may not be effective on some running plays but there are others capable who sat out this game. Another DE that didn't disappoint was Jerrian Roberts. He seemed a little faster than I expected and seemingly could play linebacker, if needed. Richard Abbe continues to get better and could be pretty solid this fall. His loss of weight has improved his quickness and makes we wish he had another year of eligibility. I also saw that Sir Calvin Wallace has overcome reported malaise and was really active in this scrimmage. He could have a chance to start this fall over the oft-injured Ryan Boutwell and the underweight Alex Lincoln. At the least, he should get some substantial minutes. One other player that I noticed was Robert Lewis. Unknown to me, the apparently undersized, inexperienced walkon middle linebacker did surprisingly well. Thinking I was looking at #30 (Roberts), it often turned out to be #50 (Lewis). He did a good job especially at stopping the Green's running game. My disappointment was that he was a senior. Where has he been? Who are other players who improved their stock over the spring?

  20. I would say brock is more like a redshirt freshman, because last year with us was basically his redshirt season. Redshirt freshman do go through growing pains, but the important thing is that the season is 12 games long and Berglund has that time to learn through experience and improve. DT has not improved over his time as our starter. We aren't asking Berglund to have a first year like a Johnny Manziel, Mariota, Colt McCoy, or Sam Bradford. Just asking for our most talented qb, who we changed the offense to fit his skill set, to improve progressively and lead our offense to more than 20.9 points per game (105th in the country).

  22. Coach Mitchell was a great man and stayed involved with North Texas until his death. I had the pleasure of knowing him and going to school with his grandkids. I wish they would name the field after him, very deserving. I was surprised Dunbar didn't make the team, but more surprised that Waters was picked as the TE considering he was moved from position to position during his NT career. I think he was recognized more for his contributions in the NFL and after leaving NT, which I disagree with. Does anyone know his numbers at TE compared to say a Luis Silva, Andy Blount, Randy Gardner, etc...?

  25. No one should ever slam Derek Thompson for his lack of effort or his love for his school but his results on the field are predictable. At this juncture, we can't afford another four or five win season. If Berglund sits he loses a year of eligibility. In 2014, he'd still be lacking in experience. Our fans would be calling for Canales' head for not trying to improve our offense. From what I've seen and read, Berglund has more speed, a quicker release and is more deceptive than DT. If all are true, that is improvement and that's what we're striving for. At the same time, it would be unfair to hand the starting job to Brock simply because he has more press clippings. He has to earn that and I think that he will.

  27. Let stomp on good old Thompson some more, he is definitely what has killed the program the last couple of years. Forget about dozens of other players that can't play, a lot of questionable coaching decisions, and a coach that bemoans the talent he inherited but has a hard time replacing them. The QB gets way too much blame and glory. Thompson has won the QB battle the last two years, I assume because there is no one better. The same thing will happen this year, the best player in practice and games will get the job. NT will win more games if they are improved, the QB needs to play much better but that postion is one of many that needs to be upgraded.

  30. The offense is set up well with a good line that was our strength last year mostly intact, good looking receiving core with a stud freshman coming in in the fall (Kidsy), and another loaded stable of backs. If DT is the qb and doesn't succeed this year I won't be able to stand for anymore excuses. That being said, same with Berglund if he is our qb.

  32. I think Brock played about as well as he could have given the players he was playing with. There was one or two throws that if he would've connected with his receivers they would've been big plays. I honestly believe that Thompson and McNutly wouldn't have done any better than Brock with the 3rd team. Someone posted Thompsons stat's in another thread and then simply stated they looked like a typical game from Thompson, and they did! 100-some odd yards, a touchdown, and an interception. That's exactly what we've gotten from him the past few years. It hasn't cut it in the past few years in the SUNBELT it certainly won't cut it in CUSA.

  35. It is mainly in men's football and men's basketball where you see this "challenge". Many of the Olympic sports former players do give and many who did not have scholarships. Parents of players are another low percentage group of givers. But, this is changing at UNT and for the positive. I really appreciate all the former players who now get involved with the GMG.com flag football game as donors and the GMG.com basketball game as well. As a volunteer rep for the Mean Green Club I see signs of positive progress on this front as well. The athletic department and coaching staffs are reaching out to our former players, and that is definitely helping. One has only to take off their "everything is wrong with UNT blinders" to actually see the progress. Want to see some of these guys and some progress in person? Come to today's GMG.com flag Football game and stay for the Spring Game!

Sorry I couldn't hang around and get to know everyone better after the game, but I was bound for Houston for an awards dinner. I made it with plenty of time to spare.
