I'm actually beat down with the Benford beatdown. It's not like we're an Elite 8 program. The man will be here next year and its time to move on. If he fails next year we get a new coach for 2014-2015. We do this around here every 2-3 years.4 points

Realistic goals: Football - have a winning record at the end of the season. Every year. Basketball - have a winning record at the end of the season. Every year. Achieve these two goals (as a bare minimum), and attendance/recruiting/MGC memberships/donations/etc... will fall into place.3 points

SGA bill passed by A&M allows religious students to opt out of paying for the LGBT center on campus Yes, the conservative argument probably is "Well, they should fund a Heterosexual support center too" However, there are certain student service fees for things we never use. However, other students might use them. At A&M, a university founded on military and religious values, it's probably a hell of a lot harder to come out of the closet and be proud of who you are without fear of some kind of backlash. This center helps those people, and their supporters do just that. There is a bill in the Texas House that also calls for decreased funding of these centers, saying they lead to "risky behavior". I'm proud to be an alum of UNT, a school that promotes tolerance and fosters a community where people don't feel oppressed and don't fear backlash because of their religious beliefs or sexual orientation and can empower others to do the same. Yes, we had the whole same-sex homecoming court bill in 2009, but that pales in comparison to what the A&M SGA is doing.2 points

You can always count on UNTnegative to chime in. Why 30 more? What would that bring the total? Go for volume. Maybe there is an Auto-gloom app that will post the usual posts to all threads.2 points

To me, the two most important goals (besides winning more games) should be an increase in attendance and an increase in MGC membership. How do you go about setting realistic goals for those for North Texas? Do we base it on student population? Average attendance for the last five/ten years? Alumni population in the metroplex? Or maybe population density in the Denton County area? One of the biggest increases in 2011 attendance in the old Sunbelt was LaLa and Ark St. LaLa went from about 17K to 29K. What is their student population? What is the population density of the Lafayette area? Is that jump/increase in numbers a realistic goal for us? From my point of view, a school with our student/alumni population should sell out a 30K stadium just about every year.2 points

I like this thread a lot because we really do need to define SOMETHING that should be attainable for our football and basketball teams. For me, I'd like to see the following: 1.) In football, compete for bowl games that are aligned with our conference. IOW, get to a point where you are winning 8 games or more. 2.) In football, win a CUSA Division title. 3.) In football, get to a point where your recruiting rankings are competitive with all of the upper end non-AQs. 4.) In football, average 25k or more per home game. 5.) in basketball, have in place a coach that can get you close to the top of your divsion each year. 6.) In basketball, make a postseason tournament 5 years from now. 7.) In basketball, average 4k per home game in 5 years Note, that in hoops, most of these were already happening, but I'm looking at what I HOPE will again be possible in 5 years. We have fallen that far abck in just one year. For both, I want to see better names for OOC opponents at Apogee and the Super Pit. That's my realistic list of hopes for where I think we could be in 2018.2 points

Just heard on Channel 8 that they will have "UNT Pride" activities on Victory Plaza Friday morning. Pretty cool,2 points

Actually, "the poster" probably has more guns than you do. Some of my guns would probably be classified as 'assault weapons'. My guns belong in my home - not in a classroom.2 points

We haven't had to do it in bball in 10 years because every other sport didn't involve a successful coach waiting for the move to his alma mater. Except for Hedlund. He's pimp.2 points

I was the Senator at the time who authored most of that bill in 2009. I subsequently was the one who had to battle uphill left and right to get the thing out of committee and to the floor; voted upon; struggled with our then Speaker when the final amended and passed legislation was "lost"; and then played out a waltz with our SGA President at the time to come to terms on the whole ordeal. The piece was never "found", the President took surveys and field studies until his term expired, and the bill that should have been just up and disappeared. The following semester, SGA attempts to wash their hands of the whole ordeal by getting rid of any input on homecoming activities. It was sad, petty, but totally worth it: because for two years I got to witness first-hand the pathetic 'wins' and back-room 'losses' of 'legislating'. I just wished for the LGBT groups I worked with, the outcome had been different. Are you sure the T isn't for Transgender? Because the two are wholly separate.2 points

Sorry, I know it was marketed as such, but I don't think this was the most talented team ever. Maybe they had the most potential or natural ability, but they weren't proven. Not making an excuse for Benford, because I was shocked af the season we had. Just my own personal opinion.2 points

I looked at every Tulsa class back to 02. They had a number of classes with no DT's signed and the majority with 2 stars that had some sort of size issue, either too short with good weight or tall and a tad too light. They also had a number of JUCO's. Point being, unless you are a Big 5 conference school it is a hit and miss process.2 points

That's a great article for someone not familiar with the program to read. If you're familiar with North Texas football you've been reading that same article every year since Dodge was hired.2 points

Can he? Will he? Anything is possible. I don't see it happening, he would have to guide the team to a sweet 16 or better before he breaks even for this toilet bowl season. I'm not sure that would be enough though. First impressions...1 point

you do realize that north Texas and SMU are both classified the same by the Carnegie Foundation as RU/H: Research Universities (high research activity)....or well you probably don't because you don't have a clue what you are talking about and in 2011 SMU did 24.5 million in total research while north Texas did 25.4 north Texas "accomplished" that with 598 tenured faculty (including 10 instructors and lecturers) and 221 tenure track faculty (with 0 instructors or lecturers) and 255 non-tenure track faculty (with 0 instructors or lecturers) <<< all from the north Texas website.....according to the THECB it is 825 tenured or tenure track faculty, 798 non-tenure track (other), 2 lecturers, and 968 teaching assistants SMU with 495 tenure track faculty, 41 non-tenure track and 169 lecturers so on a per faculty member basis SMU faculty are much more productive than north Texas faculty even just limiting it to tenure track faculty and dramatically more productive if non-tenure track and the like are included so before you go accusing anyone of not being a "research university" you should make sure the metrics for north Texas and the classifications for north Texas are not pretty much the exact same as the university you are saying is not a research university......because the Carnegie Foundation has them in the exact same classification as north Texas and the total research figures are pretty much identical with one university having a much smaller total faculty count and a smaller enrollment way to mock north Texas in an attempt to mock SMU because if SMU is "almost a research university" then north Texas is exactly the same1 point

I might be wrong on this, but it seems like a student who is GLB should probably know that A&M is not the place for them. I don't think there are any programs where A&M is the sole provider in the state. Let A&M pass their bill..perhaps more GLB will come here to UNT where we're more tolerant and will eventually become donors to the Alumni Assoc and MGC1 point

This is where the conversation starts going south due to exaggerations. A bunch of guns in my classroom? I am indifferent to "a bunch of guns in my classroom." I have "a bunch of guns" at home and they haven't caused any problems; in fact, they pretty much keep to themselves. With concealed carry permits, you are unaware of the amount of guns in the classroom, hallway, bathroom, courtyard, etc...because they are concealed by trained and licensed individuals. I would only be aware of the one I was in charge of. There is no "ideal" of a university. There is a reality of theUniversity I work for. In that reality, a person is relatively defenseless in the event of a rogue shooter. I would like that to be changed. At "THE U", we always crave a completely-safe-environment. That should outweigh less safe environments.1 point

Tells me all I need to know. Someone doesn't agree with you, they are a "nut", right? Probably racists, too. Maybe even sexist. Why don't you go re-read the 2nd amendment before calling people "nuts>" Oh, I forget, that doesn't matter when the emotion of the moment has overcome you and you need to feel that you are superior because you "feel" as much or more as others.1 point

You people dance with glee on every corpse, don't you? No matter how small it may be. This crime didn't happen BECAUSE of a gun... it was likely the result of these two kids being raised without a father, discipline, or boundaries in a culture that glorifies violence and dismisses the value of human life. Let's focus on real solutions instead of hyperbolic grandstanding.1 point

Right, because an armed crime is far more likely to happen in a convenience store that it is a school, and having armed clerks stopped those crimes from happening. Do I need to draw you a map?1 point

Yes i am sure. Im a certified teacher, and as one i want to be able to defend my life. I dont want to sit back and pray that i dont get shot.1 point

Right, because keeping a gun where you can't get to it when you need it makes perfect sense. You regurgitate the same fear-mongering propaganda that was used by opponents of concealed carry, yet there has been far less gun crime/injuries by accidental discharge from this group than those withoit a conceal carry permit. If we were to believe you, teachers would accidentally be shooting stidents dead every day. Hogwash, and you know it. Back when I lived in Arlington, their was a convenience store in my neighborhood (a pretty good meighborhood, not that that matters in Arlingyon). The store had been robbed 3 times in 2 months. I go in one day and see the clerk carrying a glock 9mm openly in a belt holster. I ask her what was going on. She told me the owner ordered them to wear the guns and provided concealed carry training for all employees. The owner ordered them to wear the weapon openly while at work. You could see the clerk was armed from outside the store through the plate glass window. Perfectly legal (private property). Well, in the year and a half after making this change, that store not only had not suffered another robbery, but the owner told me that they had not had to call police one time. Not for a disturbance, not for a theft, nothing. He also told me that his inventory was constantly coming out dead on when he did his books. He said that having his employees wear a firearm openly was the best business decision he ever made. Violent Criminals are inherently cowards. They pick on the weak. They want nothing to do with someone capable of resisting their particular crime. Too bad one of the teachers wasn't armed at Bewtown, not because they would have shot the mass murderer, but because the mass murderer would not have chosen that location, a location he was very familiar with since his mom taught there, as a target. He would have known that teachers carry weapons at that school and, at the very least, moved on to another target. It may have even completely prevented the mass murderer from his task (considering he probably did not have such intimate knowledge of any other elementary school. Or we could follow your Bill Clements-esqe suggestions.1 point
