  1. Influx of transfers have finally brought talent to UNT football Rick Gosselin rgosselin@dallasnews.com Published: 03 April 2013 10:32 PM DENTON — Dan McCarney spent 18 years coaching in the Big Ten, another 14 years in the Big 12 and two more in the SEC. He knows what big-time college football looks like. For the first time in his three springs at North Texas, McCarney believes the Mean Green has the look of big-time football. “This team is a lot more competitive,” McCarney said. “There are more guys who belong here — more players that look like Division I guys. It’s exciting when you see more guys that can play. “Instead of fabricating depth and fabricating competition, which we had to do these past two years, there’s real depth, real competition, and it’s there every day. That’s exciting to me as a head coach.” In the 2011 recruiting class, Rivals listed Brock Berglund as the 15 best dual-threat prep quarterback in the nation. Johnny Manziel was No. 14 on that list and Everett Golson No. 16. Last season, Manziel won the Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M, and Golson quarterbacked Notre Dame to the national championship game. Berglund signed with Kansas out of high school but transferred to North Texas a year ago and spent a redshirt season quarterbacking the Mean Green scout team. This spring he’s competing with two-time team captain Derek Thompson for the starting job. In Reggie Pegram’s last college game, he scored two touchdowns in Purdue’s bowl victory over Western Michigan. That was in 2011. He transferred to North Texas in 2012 and gave the Mean Green fits on the scout team. This spring he’s competing for a starting position. Darius Terrell also kept the North Texas defense busy on the scout team last fall. He was a Parade All-America wide receiver who signed with Texas out of high school. He spent two seasons in Austin, then transferred to North Texas in 2012. This spring, he’s competing for a starting position as well. read more: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/columnists/rick-gosselin/20130403-gosselin-influx-of-transfers-have-finally-brought-talent-to-unt-football-that-dan-mccarney-has-craved.ece This post has been promoted to an article

  2. I grew up in Fort Worth about 4 miles from Amon Carter Stadium. Trust me, TCU didn't start being "Fort Worth's team" until they STARTED WINNING! I used to go to games for free because no one wanted to watch a loser. We would run around the stadium (upper deck completely empty) rarely watching the action on the field. Jim Wacker won a little one year, and suddenly Fort Worth was interested. Waker left, the Frogs got bad again, and no one cared again. TCU started to win in the early 00s. This is when the city began to support the team. Everybody loves a winner who wins when it matters. If we somehow manage to win a CUSA title and beat a Texas or OU along the way (as TCU has done), wait, watch and see how quickly the city of Denton and their citizens rush to embrace UNT football. I doubt that happens anytime soon, but I guess we can dream.

  3. No. 90 had surgery to repair a dislocated knee cap over Thanksgiving. He has rehabed and is able to go. He is participating in all drills but is held out of the team scrimmage segments.

  5. I would give Mac seven years to get it turned around. I just don't think it happens without that many recruiting classes. Which to me means that this year record-wise doesn't mean a lot. You can blah blah blah about losing fans or running out of time but to me, continuing to add onto the foundation is the most important. His second recruiting class will be seniors in year five or six. That isn't enough time. I want to see how the seniors do in his fourth recruiting class. Patience sucks and is trying, but so is starting over every four years. If we don't start getting anything above lousy quarterbacking, it doesn't matter if we bring Booger back.

  8. I suppose it is all how you want to read into the article. I thought it was great for a football program that does not get much attention in the Metroplex to get a DMN front page story written by the Goose. I sent the article to a former player who played one year under DMac at UNT and he thought it was a pretty good article too.

  9. That's a great article for someone not familiar with the program to read. If you're familiar with North Texas football you've been reading that same article every year since Dodge was hired.

  10. No, UNT does not suck! It's a fantastic university that just happens to always have bad luck in athletics. There is nothing to do but suffer and dream of what could be.

  11. I hope they repaint the floor at the Pit to match the practice gym. Clean, simple and SOW at center court. Just add the CUSA logos on the free throw lines (facing center court, not upside down like the belt logos) and it will be perfect.

  12. Stop. I'm one of the biggest DD defenders on this board, but you've got it wrong. DD failed to upgrade his coaching staff and recruiting practices with each SBC championship. Ramon Flanigan and stealth recruiting didn't make sense in 2003 & 2004. DD's inability to capitalize on momentum is a lesson we should learn from. The truth is RV used the SBC championship as momentum for the atheletic village and new stadium. It's the coaching staff job to use momentum for a better product, not the fans or the local media.

  16. So Bill Conelly at SBNation does IMHO quite outstanding previews of all FBS college Football teams.&nbsp; They are bit stats heavy, but that is ok with me He tends to go from worst to first and has thus far gone through the Belt and the MAC and now started with C-USA. A bit less stat heavy but even more up to date are the previews by Paul Myerberg. I put it Up here for all our opponents and the c-USA teams we will not get to play (before the championship game that is). Very interesting reads. August 31 Idaho Paul Myerbergs writeup Athlon Scout If we are loosing this one the suicide watch is indeed merrited. Myerberg reall does not think much of Idaho, particularly as he thinks both lines will struglle mightily and receivers are not talented enough, a good recipe for disaster in other words. Conelly thinks even less of them and looking at what Personell Petrino has to work with, there really must be no way NT loses this game at home. Cout does not Love them either, but does not have them as far down as the others.... on top of that coust has the game with NT as Idahos 'key game'. coveragewise the blog http://www.thevandalnation.com/ seems interesting boardwise the scout site seems the most active September 7 Ohio Their record too looked better than it was, and run defense was not their strenght. But they do also return a decent batch of starters everywhere including the line, yet a ton of injuries might keep that from beeing as helpful as it would usually be (sound familiar NT fans?). I think this will be a tough game overall, partially because this is a game you have to beat the opponent with the pass, and how we will fare there this season remains a question mark Athlon Scout Spetember 14. Ball state Athlon scout If Ball state had played a semi decent schedule last year, their record would have been much worse. their skill players on offense return generally, but nearly the whole offensive line has to be replaced and there will be little depth.... I take from that that this is the game where our DL has to come up big, if it does we do have a shot. Also their DL is not big and the top 3 DTs are gone...cue NTs running game...I am optimistic about this one Myerberg is really high on them though Boards: it seems the independent site BSUfans.com is the way to go September 21 Georgia Athlon Scout Connelly has them as the possibly best offense in the country but only as average (by SEC standards that is) defense. This game will be extremely tough. NTs best hope is to completely get forgotten in the midst of a Georgia schedule that has 2super difficult games before and 1 after NT visits. Talkwise - as you'd expect from a football school like Georgia, tere are many options. I like the independent DawgRun the best. Blogwise if you like it to be all text and very detailed go to get the picture. If you like it a bit more graphic and don't have time to sort through everything, the SBnation blog dawgsport might be your best option. October 5th Tulane Less nervous here, even though they return a ton of starters, because it seems they were very dependent on their departed QB and their defense is awful against the run. Myerberg thinks the are two years away from breakthrough, that their depth on DL is terrible but that their incoming QB is probably the answer. Scout is not very high on them Athlon Boards: there is the independent one http://www.yogwf.com and then there is the rivals one. October 12th MTSU Conelly is really high on them. Their offense does look scary. their defense was terrible, particularly against the run, but returns almost every one. This might be a tough game. Myerberg seems a lot less high on them, and thinks even with everyone returning the defense was terrible. Scout Athlon Almost all those reviews were made before MTSU had 3 players arrested. Boardwise the rivals forum seems the best used, but not super impressive either October 19th La.Tech Reading Conelly makes me surprisingly confident about this game. They lose sooo much production on offense and have to cope with a new coach. Other than medium class DT starters there is not too much left in defense either. I think they may struggle mightily this season. Myerberg Thinks that a lot is gone but thare is still enoguh talent for 8 wins. Athlon Boardwise it seems you best go to http://www.latechbbb.com/ October 26th Southern Miss I don't know. Their recruiting rankings say there is still a lot of talent... but the 3rd system in 3 years, almost no offensive line returning, but otherwise an experienced team. really hard to judge before the season starts what identity they will have. I don't think they will be worldbeaters though. Myerberg has the NT game as the one to watch for them. He blieves steadfast in the offensive coach but does not see greatness in their personell, particularly the line. Their OL against NTs DL might be the cruicial match up. Athlon Scout Boardwise the eaglepost seems to be the best October 31 Rice Looks like a tough game for us. They are on a streak from last year and bring 19 starters of quality back. It seems their run defense is most probably their weekest spot, so if we can establish a good running game we have a shot. And NT will be sadled with the disadvantage of having only 5 days to recoup and prepare. Myerberg does not like Rice very much, considering their stretch run was very good and how much quality they return. He thinks that the overall talent level is to little to really make more noise. Still: he has them clearly winning against NT. Scout Athlon Boardwise their csnbbs site called the parliament might be the best place to go November 9 UTEP This spells interesting game. what I take from the article is that their deense ought to be terrible , 6 of the back seven starters are gone and the line was terrible last year, but their offense brings back almost everyone except the starting qb and they have some star transfer from A&amp;M to mediate this. Might be a game that comes down to who fails to score first. Myerbergs preview: basically they get a big hope from getting showers at QB, but he better be mobile, cause the OL is a major concern. Defense lacks depth across the board. Scout. Athlon The miners have the only SBNation blog of C-USA: http://www.minerrush.com minerillustrated.com is the rivals site and possibly the best forum for UTEP and seems pretty active. November 23 UTSA Makes me a bit anxious. What I take from this is that you beat em easily if your passing game is halfway decent... but I am not sure ours is. Myerberg on the other hand is really low on them, saying that with the severly more difficult schedule they will have serious depth problems. That would bode well for NT, which plays them rather late. Athlon Seems the best fan board is http://www.rowdytalk.com/forum.php November 30 Tulsa A lot of people act as if Tulsa was gonna be a certified loss. I am not so sure, even less after reading this. The offense was actually not as good as it seemed last season, he contends it was more the defense that made the big splash. Now apart from loosing 3 OL the offense does not lose extremely much, but this great defense does. The DL gets a complete makeover, the best LB graduated and the secondary is a construction site too. Then again with this coaching staff the regression might not be that big and we might get blown out anyway. But right now I see NT having a shot at this one. Scout does not agree with my feelings on Tulsa. Athlon boardwise it seems really thin to me. Previews of North Texas: Connelly Myerberg Scout Athlon C-USA teams we don't play: Eastern Carolina Athlon Myerberg we don't play them. They are one of the favourites in the east; Quite a few people returning Marshall recruited well for a few years now, now the record might start really showing it. Offense comes back quite complete and the defense also only loses a lot in secondary (but is clearly worse than the offense). Scout Athlon for message boards it's been suggested below to go to http://www.herdnation.com FAU: SBN ; Myerberg Athlon Scout Boardwise owlsnest is interesting. owlaccess is less active but still ok it seems. FIU Conelly calls them a total wildcard, I on the other hand think we missed out on an easy game. Myerberg seems to agree with me. Athlon Boardwise FIU's fans can be found at FIUGoldenPanthers.com UAB another interesting read... but we don't play them. Myerberg Athlon Scout Boardwise blazertalk the CSNBBS board- seems actually the most used for UAB</p>

  17. you do realize that north Texas and SMU are both classified the same by the Carnegie Foundation as RU/H: Research Universities (high research activity)....or well you probably don't because you don't have a clue what you are talking about and in 2011 SMU did 24.5 million in total research while north Texas did 25.4 north Texas "accomplished" that with 598 tenured faculty (including 10 instructors and lecturers) and 221 tenure track faculty (with 0 instructors or lecturers) and 255 non-tenure track faculty (with 0 instructors or lecturers) <<< all from the north Texas website.....according to the THECB it is 825 tenured or tenure track faculty, 798 non-tenure track (other), 2 lecturers, and 968 teaching assistants SMU with 495 tenure track faculty, 41 non-tenure track and 169 lecturers so on a per faculty member basis SMU faculty are much more productive than north Texas faculty even just limiting it to tenure track faculty and dramatically more productive if non-tenure track and the like are included so before you go accusing anyone of not being a "research university" you should make sure the metrics for north Texas and the classifications for north Texas are not pretty much the exact same as the university you are saying is not a research university......because the Carnegie Foundation has them in the exact same classification as north Texas and the total research figures are pretty much identical with one university having a much smaller total faculty count and a smaller enrollment way to mock north Texas in an attempt to mock SMU because if SMU is "almost a research university" then north Texas is exactly the same

  22. This. I grew up in Ft. Worth during the LT,16-team WAC years...TCU was good, but any sort of national attention was centered around the 300, 400 yard rushing games LT was throwing down, not the 8-4 WAC records TCU was putting up. I could walk up to Amon Carter, show my high school ID and get a $5 GA ticket and go have my choice of seats in the lower bowl. Place was at best 2/3rds full.

  37. I am really not sure if we're playing on Halloween.... I see nothing official on the CUSA site about it, but I think on the Mean Green Sports website season ticket renewal page it says we have a home game on Oct 31... Additionally I was at E Z Check #4 this morning on Eagle/Bernard and they had a printed sign on a cooler in there with our 2013 schedule and whatdoyaknow it also said we have a game on Oct 31.

  43. I think Dodge signed 10 or 11 JUCO's before his final season which made us really short of scholarship players last year. He basically morgatged our future for short-term success, and failed. Mac had been much less willing to do sign many JUCO's before this season, the first in which we will be at or near 85 scholarship players in forever. So Mac is using a few JUCO's to shore up some spots, but not at the expense of our future. Transfers are a completely different thing to me. Why not take a flyer on some guys that were highly recruited out of high school?

  44. No use, Mike. The wagons have been circled and RV is firmly committed to Benford. RV's job should be dependent on the outcome, but we are UNT, and that ain't gonna happen.
