All I know is that in 2014 we have Tulsa, SMU & LT at home. Why the negativity?5 points

I think that the teams overall size, strength, and speed is noticeably better than last year. Until Brown (#84) went down yesterday we were real deep at the DE spot. I am hoping that his knee is just a sprang, but the father of a former player who was sitting next to me interpreted the body language going on between Brown and the trainer. A first the trainer put his hand on his shoulder and seemed to be giving works of encouragement....not a good sign according to the football player dad. Then the trainer later came back over and put his arm around Brown's shoulder and put his head next to browns' whilst talking to him....Uh Oh, says football dad, when they put their arm around their shoulder like that, it's almost always bad news. I hope not, because it's been very clear from observing this young from day one in practice that he REALLY wants to play football for North Texas. If there is rehab involved, then I hope he goes at it as hard as he has been practicing. We need someone with his ability......and fire. QB's- DT may have lost some weight, but I don't see the noticeable increase in speed that others (including Vito) have observed in him. He took off on one run with about 20 yards of open field in front of him. He got close to 20 yards before the LB's and DB's made him take a slide. But if you had inserted McNulty or Gill (the only other two QB's really practicing on Saturday) in the same play, I believe they would have gotten further down field. In other words, Mr. Thompson looks pretty much the same to me. When he is having a day when he is "on", he looks great. But the problem has always been that someone else seems to show up the following week wearing #7 that isn't near as good. Maybe a taller and healthier receiving corp will help change that pattern. McNulty looked pretty good thowing the ball, and (as always) he looked good running the ball. Our walk-on QB, Gill (#6) also looked good. He has quicker feet than all the other QB's and he has an arm that is almost as strong as McNulty. He had a couple of good runs as well. I seriously doubt that he is 6' however. RB's Just as I was telling "former football player dad" about how quicker and faster Byrd looks this spring, he breaks a 60 yrd run by doing his best Lance Dunbar imitation. He stop-steps the defense at the line of scrimmage and then takes off straight up field through the gap that his move created. Pegram looked ok, but he doesn't seem to be going at it quite as hard as in the first practices. Lewis (#4) is looking good. He has good speed, good moves, especially running in traffic, and he doesn't go down that easily. Wilhite (#21 in green) is also looking good. He is more of a speed back, but he can get some yards after contact. Earlier in spring practice Rex Rollins (#20) was getting a noticeable amount of reps, and he looked pretty good. I didn't see him at all yesterday.......don't know what happened to him. WR's #80 Darnell Smith is making a serious attempt to start. He had the most spectacular catch yesterday....and it was where it really counts....in the end zone. Teegarden (#10) continues to look good, as does Chelf (#31) and Caldwell (#83). Terrell (#11) and Pleasant (#17) had a pretty good day. I didn't see our other transfer Brown (#19) out there today. Defense...everyone is looking better this year. BTW Accune has switched numbers from 52 to 7. Everyone who is out there playing defense is flying around and going at it pretty hard. The starting DT's (as of Saturday) seem to be Abbe and Lincoln. Abbe seems noticeably quicker than last year. Orr continues to get reps at DT, as does Wallce, but Wallace wasn't out there as much as I have seen him earlier in practice. Polk (#42) looks great in his speed rush role, and Roberts (#30) is looking good at DE. When he was out there, he was around the ball a lot. Horton and Mason (46 and 49 respectively) were suited up in pads, but they mainly jogged across and back on the field....no contact work. Can someone tell me how much playing time either of them had last year? There are a bunch of DB's out there this spring. Right now, it looks like Evans and Lee will start at safety. Whitfield continues to develop and he looks really good out there. A belated Kudos to the coaching staff for moving him to DB. As mentioned in another thread, there were several blocks during the practice....both punting and FG situations. I don't know if this is an improvement in our defensive special teams, or....well....something else.4 points

To hell with sharing him, I'll buy his damn plane ticket and skip rent next month.3 points

Back to the thread...I loved to 70 yard pass for a TD that Thompson threw right on the money. Anyone who thinks DT will just hand the team over to any other QB is kidding themselves. Overall, it seemed like UNT has more speed and more size. Some good, some bad today, but I do think this team is in a better spot this year at this time than was last year 's squad.3 points

I am new to this site but I am a big UNT football fan. I was hoping to see some opinions, thoughts and highlights from the scrimmage on Saturday but only found a string debating the schedule and world politics. I would like to start a new one that would allow some of the members/fans that were at the scrimmage to enlighten us on what they saw Saturday. I wish I could have been present but was unable to go. Did anyone make it Saturday? What did you think?2 points

No, his dumbass and ridiculous comments ran him off and he didn't have the stones to listen to people call him out for his comments This board is for big boys that can defend what they say. Not for whiny pimple-faced preppy's. Don't believe me on Stormchaser, check out my signature where he predicted a 25-win season in basketball.2 points

I'm not crying. You're just an ass. You hide behind cynicism and pessimism, but lets be honest, you just are an ass. Plain and simple. I don't even give a damn if I end up getting banned, but you, sir, are flat out, an asshole. Like, it's telling that you don't even care about reaching out to students. I know nobody's on here because it is a group of about the same 10 people who post on here. None of which are students. Remember Stormchaser? Well, the jackassery afloat here ran him off, too.2 points

There is a button you can push where you don't have to see a thing I say. Use it. Or don't. But stop crying.2 points

The NCAA BB tourney with 64 teams is arguably the greatest event in college sports. Compare it to the weak FB playoffs starting in 2015 with just 4 teams. Is there really much difference from the present mythical "National Championship"?. I say it's not even close to a true playoff w/o at least a 16 team tourney. The new system like the present one just makes the rich richer.1 point

ESPN reported Saturday that WKU on Monday will announce move to CUSA effective 2014. Any source or confirmation on Bowling Green?1 point

Great breakdown of the scrimmage. Thank you Silver Eagle! While I appreciate the evaluations that Vito supplys, I prefer hearing from fans that were in attendance. Reporters sometimes lean toward the company line while fans tend to tell it like it is. I appreciate the honest opinions of what you saw!1 point

We are 59-119 since 1998. That's 14 years of 33% football. That's also 14 years of new student classes coming through. The freshman class of 1998 have been alumni for about 10 years now. They came on campus while the AD started trying to change the culture on campus. Talk to any student today versus a student that was here pre-2000 (such as myself) and the spirit and "culture" is night and day. More green on campus, fewer t-shirts of other schools, etc. Our AD has done a good job in trying to turn the culture around on campus and committing to facility upgrades. (you can argue whether he had anything to do with the upgrades or not, but no other AD got it done) At the same time, he made the worst coaching hire in the history of the program which has led to losing on the field at the worst possible time. The college football world shifted at a time we were, let's face it, a joke on the field. What's amazing to me is despite all this losing, 9 of the top 10 crowds in program history have come during this time. The student turnout for the first game is huge every year. We just keep losing. And those 28-32 year old alumni who should be at their jobs talking up their alma mater and renewing their season tickets have been beat to submission by bad, bad football while their SMU, TCU, La Tech, LSU, Tulsa, OU, OK St, Baylor, TTech on and on coworkers have had success in the past 10 years. It's an absolute miracle we have the support we have now. We go 9-3,10-2, knock off a big boy......the city of Denton and alumni will come around. The foundation for a great experience is in place now. It wasnt with Fouts and the poor facilities We just need to win. Why was LaMonroe's stadium packed for their ESPN game last year? Because their marketing dept is so great or they have a great culture? No it's because they were on Sports Center every day for 2 weeks after beating Ark. How many recruits saw that? We have to fix our play on the field. Then this "culture" will all the sudden miraculously appear. "what about the 4 year run? We didn't gain traction then." I think there is more media access to smaller conferences today (tv and Internet) than back then. We were 29-21 in that period in a start up conference and got beat soundly in 3 of the 4 bowl games, and no one outside of Denton really knew. Troy, MTSU, FIU, Ark St have had more national attention the past few years then we had during our run. (beating major programs has helped too, we NEVER beat a major conference program outside of Baylor) Making a run like that today (while getting a big OOC win) would garner more attention than back then. Win now win now win now Period. All that other stuff will take care of itself.1 point

Welcome! I am relatively new to the blog myself, but not new to UNT sports. There are already a couple of strings that start with observations of the scrimmage.1 point

I believe several NT programs were well over a 3.0 this past year. This speaks volumes of the athletic department and when you throw in programs such as soccer, tennis and m golf also winning conference championships every year...it really is pretty amazing!1 point

Let's be honest, we are moving to a severely watered down CUSA. I would have been O.K. with it had Tulane, ECU, and Tulsa stayed. At this point, UNT needs to concentrate on winning football games, and winning CUSA championships. Winning is what opens doors to better conferences and recognition.1 point

I have long and intimate knowledge of the North Korean situation. Current events, translated to English, are, Pardon us, fine brethren to the South and in America, but we seem to be running low on edible roots. Could you see fit to send up another boatload of ramen noodles? That would be swell. Thanks. So maybe, we send up a couple orders of ribs from Metzler's and the Tulsa situation becomes a non issue.1 point

I guess the NBA, NFL, MBL, NHL, College baseball, college men's and women's basketball, volleyball, soccer, diving, wrestling, and every other college sport have it wrong? But, College Football and the WWF have it right?1 point

Worrying about schedules down the road...greatness! Hey, the N. Koreans might bomb Grandbury too...why not worry about that? Seems so much more credible...and a much bigger reason to worry.1 point

So you know all students/young fans who visit this site? Either way, this series stands. HOPEFULLY, 2014 will be considered the return game for this season and that will end the series. That's the agreement that should have been made.1 point

Quenton Brown ... ugh ... hopefully it's not serious. DT vs Berglund ... I don't mind who wins the job as long as the team does well. However, if DT is the starter and plays like he did this past year he won't be the starter for long. I don't think losing 20 lbs will suddenly make him more accurate or develop good foot work. Vito said we have a home game with Tulsa. He doesn't mention a road game so either it's a one and done or Vito just didn't mention it. Either way it's not a failure by us and it's not some great decision by Tulsa. It's is what it is.1 point
-
The post says a non-conference HOME game against Tulsa in 2014. Add SMU and four conference games. That makes six.1 point
-
Keeping Tulsa on the schedule is not the issue. That's smart--we ought to play them fairly regularly. The failure came where the A.D. had us playing return games at Indiana and at Tulsa in the same year.1 point
-
To a large extent, I agree with your second sentence. However, at least in basketball, the championship is won or lost on the court. In football, it is mostly on paper. Let me rephrase that--in the highest division of football only, it is mostly on paper--every other division is fully capable of having a playoff to settle matters on the field of play, where championships are supposed to be won or lost.1 point
-
Why would we want another home game? We never draw flies after homecoming, and when your play is this bad it is easier to stay off the metroplex radar by playing on the road. Pray for a buy out before the SMU series starts as there will be no place to hide on that one when we get thoroughly embarrassed before the whole metroplex over and over again.1 point

One year... he has been here one year... he could have not won a single game and I still would have not lost hope. No one who comes on boards like this knows anything about the sport they talk about. They can list stats or talk about past players who played for a university but they have no clue how things actually work. Arizona State playing us will not really affect them. It will affect them if they lose so I am assuming that is what they are afraid off. Beating/ even playing us will really not hurt them at all. To say that it would is true stupidity.1 point

This opens up an opportunity to play Minnesota or maybe Northwestern twice on the road.1 point

One of my all time favorite bands. Amazing live. I'm totally taking credit for them playing here. I recommended them for the UNT Fine Arts Series, got a note back saying thanks for the suggestion, then a couple months later they were announced. It was a great show!1 point

Our ship sailed in the 70's when the Southwest Conference didn't take us. At this point it is like the famous quote from the late great Clayton Williams "we need to just sit back and enjoy it" As long as we have geographic rivals (UTSA, Rice, La Tech and hopefully Texas St), I can and will accept CUSA for what it is....(Belt 2.0) However, if the established Rice, UTEP, Southern Miss and La Tech leave......we should move the team to Los Angeles and get an expansion team and start over!1 point

No team would make a perceived downgrade to the SBC. Notice I said perceived, CUSA has a better reputation than the SBC thanks to its old schools having national recognition, UCF, Memphis (BB), ECU, USM, Houston, all have been ranked in the top 25 in the past few years, and although they are gone they left the conference with some national reputation. Right now any team in the SBC would say yes to CUSA in a heartbeat, just like any CUSA team would say yes to the BE, we all know how the remaining teams on both sides are unhappy. No one is moving in the other direction, all it took was a whisper of a rumor that CUSA was going to lose teams and needed replacements and the SBC schools jumped instantly. Everyone on the SBC board was talking about solidarity, holding together, and addition by subtraction. CUSA fans hoping that Houston, SMU, Memphis and UCF, are equally as delusional. Nothing against the SBC, I have no problem with the conference and it was a good home for us, I just couldn't believe that people were convinced it would hold together. Isn't Ark. St. trying to desperately get out? I don't blame you guys, being in a western division with Idaho and NMSU.1 point

Also, I knew about the MPC performance. How they got in there is totally unknown to me (they are from Denton, so there are probably UNT COM connections), but that is very cool.1 point
