I agree with the above. In a lot of ways Tony was the victim of his own success. Some of us expected superman and all we got was a very talented player. As a freshman he was all conference and should have been MVP. In NT's membership in the Belt there were only two other first team all conference members and they were both upperclassmen Chris Davis and Tristan Thompson. I commented at the beginning of the season that Mitchell could be the best player ever at NT as well as this could be the best team in NT history. Both of those predictions fail well short but the prognostication on Tony was much closer. There have been a lot of players at NT with better careers but none with anymore physical ability and none that have brought near as much exposure to the basketball program.5 points

I really couldn't tell you who has higher moral standards, JJ or Benturd, but I can honestly say that JJ never called the opposing coach a MFer on a televised ball game.2 points

I never said JJ was a problem. I just think Benford is attempting to take it a step forward and be more then a coach to these athletes. I believe he is trying to be like a father to them. The skiver BS is also getting old. Grow up and move on.... The onlypoint I was trying to make is that collegeis about more then athletics. Very few people will grow up to become professional theltes, but they all need a degree and a bright future.2 points

Character building is almost always portrayed as a problem with the gone and an asset with the current. I expect any coach at any level to use sports as an opportunity to emphasize and teach life values. I also expect a college coach to ensure that their athletes get every opportunity to get a quality education. Most current college coaches fulfill these basic obligations, but they are hired to win not educate. There is a strong correlation between the need to discuss character and the number of loses a coach has. Does anyone really think that Benford or McCarney are more interested in the athletes well being than Jones and Dodge? Better, yet: does anyone care? As far as I can tell, all cared about their athletes and all were portrayed as being better friends to the athlete than their predecessors. The truth is coaches understand that they are there to win, other aspects of their performance are important but not likely to get them fired nearly as fast. Coaches despite what they may present, are not all that altruistic. Poor players are weeded out and there are double standards based on the value of an athlete.1 point

These arguments are mainly stupid and inane. Having a college degree (especially in some of the majors athletes choose) doesn't gaurantee that you won't end up in jail, jobless, or broke. White collar crime exists as well. People with degree make poor career choices, too. The problem here is the assumption that you can't have both (1) a winning athletic department, and (2) kids who take care of business of the field of play. It can be done. Our problem here is the same as always - our highest visability athletic programs lose. We have very few stretches of success. Darrell Dickey had the first real D-I stretch since Hayden Fry. Johnny Jones had a stetch that also hadn't been seen since the 70s at this level. As long as the coaches aren't hiding child rapists, I'm pretty happy. It would be nice if we could win a few games as well. However, we are North Texas, and coaches are not often held accountable for losing.1 point

We have seen this horror movie before--it sounds like we are in sequel 3. "Trilli has lots of enthusiasm and cares so much about the kids--way more than Jankovich ever did." "Dodge wants to make these men better husbands and fathers. Look, he doesn't even allow cussing on the sidelines." "Benford actually cares for these guys--he often asks us "Who is gonna feed your babies?" He wants us to be responsible..." Combined records of these three: 38 wins, 144 losses, winning percentage of .208 Combined records of their predecessors: (Jankovich, Dickey, and Johnny Jones) 285 wins, 267 losses, winning percentage of .516 Record for producing good citizens, husbands, and fathers from these three: 100% Record for the above stat from the predecessors: apparently much worse...1 point

First bold is blatantly untrue. Weapons are not allowed to be carried in common areas of military bases, except by Military police. Too bad that they weren't. The shooting would have never happened. You really shouldn't cite Luby's AT ALL. Let me introduce you to Suzanna Hupp. As for the second bold, maybe you are expressing self-concern? And I love your idea of sticking our collective heads in the sand and ignoring what has happened in other states, with the great logic that what happens there couldn't happen here. Wedgewood Baptist Church in Fort Worth happened. If that guy had chosen a school instead of a church, then what would you say? This should be left up to the individual districts to decide if they want to do it, how they want to do it, and who they want to arm. Wow, delegating power as close to the inddividual as possible. What a concept. And for those of you that haven't seen it, you may want to check out this story. Ya, there is zero chance the government will come for your guns for no reason. Zero chance...: http://news.yahoo.com/cops-raid-family-home-over-facebook-photo-child-151606241.html ..1 point

So...Harvard winning is the big upset of the day. I had New Mexico getting the the Elite 8, so yeah I am kinda screwed. Way to go Harvard thoough! Also of note is the Pac12 going 3-0 and the absolute dominance of Syracuse & VCU.1 point

Their first option to score was always in transition. When it did not work they then set up their half court offense. Evergreens goal is to score in transition. That is basketball 101 and UNT did this like everyone else. The defense needs to improve going into next season so we can have more chances to score in transition (especially true with our lack of post play). I fear teams next season will over play on the three point line and we will run the risk of turning the ball over.1 point

If the Learfield Director's Cup contains records from sports that don't bring in any revenue and most people don't care about, then it really isn't what I would look at. The money sports ar football and men's hoops at those 124 schools. Maybe some get $$ from womens hoops or baseball, but the 124 schools is a pretty good measure to look at for where we stand. The last 8 years have been atrocious for UNT football. The basketball team had been solid, but looks to be back on the Trilli Express to failure. To be below 100 on that list really says something. I'd venture to say that we are the biggest school on that list. We just don't care enough about athletics here--because the university's circle (administration, BOR, students, faculty, alumni, citizens of the city) don't want us to spend on it. No other school in our circle would accept what we have from our football team in the last 8 years. The AD at these other schools would have been fired long ago for one bad hire in foootball, much less the worst hire in school history--and that's not even counting the worst hire in womens' hoops and what could easiily become the worst hire in mens hoops history if the trend continues. It is what it is. We want to be a "value" for cost of a degree. We want to continue to be known for our fine arts programs. We want to continue to be a great educator school, so as to produce a lot more teachers, which is what we have always been. Those are very noble causes and ventures--no doubt that they benefit society at a very high level. But they don't relate well at all to athletic spending. You cannot spend the money needed to really compete on athletics when the rest of the university doesn't want it. I just wish that someone in our leadership would admit to it, instead of having some NT Daily spare write about it in some column every month or so. Just tell us that it doesn't matter that much. Maybe you will get more donations from the rest of your alumni and Denton citizens for standing up for their views...I doubt it, but maybe you all know something about our alumni that other schools in Texas and the region don't have to deal with. We will never know just how much $$$ we have left on the table by not spending on athletics at a decent level over all these years, but, again, maybe at UNT and in Denton, our leaders know that it wouldn't have made us any money at all. Maybe we are just that different from the other universities in this region. Again, I doubt it, but nothing else makes any sense to me at this point, in regards to how little we care to spend on $$$ sports here. Any thoughts?1 point

I am also a teacher. I bet a least once a week we have students find keys or purses that a teacher has misplaced. I would hate to add guns to that list.1 point

Thank you for your 1st half season with UNT, TM. And I'm sorry we didn't hire an experienced head coach for your second year, leading to much frustration on our and your part, I'm sure. Go forth and make us proud. I really hope you end up in a Spurs uniform. I think that is the situation that would be best for you. Pop can fix what Benford broke. Mine's done. Since all of our yahoo stuff is registered in my wife's name, I just used my name for my bracket to be slightly less confusing for all of you. Instead of just going for obvious choices, I threw in what I thought might be some weird upsets in the first couple of rounds but I'm sure my Final 4/Championship Brackets are pretty close to most others'.1 point

Rice is too busy acheiving medical breakthroughs to care about their waiters. See, what's funny is that in my desperation to get back to Houston, I've applied to graduate school at UH and been accepted since Rice is mostly undergraduate. Not because of academics, but solely because it's the only other school in Houston. Building a new stadium? Oh, we already did that. You have had to downgrade plans, cost and capacity too for being too overzealous...getting College Gameday, well, there ya go, here's a cookie...the Big East is worse than every conference other than the Sun Belt and travel costs + setting a new conference + lack of name recognition pull away the extremely minute financial gain y'all may get and you better hope UConn and Cincy stay (not likely) or there's no TV contract, the city hall, that's pretty cool, yeah, congrats...she's a Rice alum...coincidence? Rice alum telling UH grads what to do? Hmmm...she's trying to get re-elected and it's really only a rivalry from the UH side, so not really stunning...) It's not really assinine. Look at recruiting in 2012. Lets run through a few of the best classes of 2012... UT...#2 recruiting class translated to a 8-4 season and a bowl win...with a #2 class you'd expect BCS games...including the epic loss to OU... Michigan...#7 recruiting class...another 8-4 season and a bowl loss... The U...#9 recruiting class...7-5... Auburn...#10 recruiting class...3-9...0-8 SEC...Auburn's wins coming over ULM, NMSU and Alabama A&M... Tennessee...#17 recruiting class...5-7, 1-7 SEC... Washington...#21 recruiting class...7-5...lost bowl... Virginia Tech...#22 recruiting class...6-6...won bowl... I think you get the point so far...recruiting is a shitstorm...let's keep going... Let's look at the bottom... Fresno State...#121 recruiting class...9-4 Utah State...#115 recruiting class...11-2 Ball State...#115 recruiting class...8-5 Middle Tennessee...#111 recruiting class...8-4 ULM...#111 recruiting class...8-5 Kent State...#99 recruiting class...11-3 Louisiana Tech...#96 recruiting class...9-3 San Diego State...#97 recruiting class...9-4 ULL...#94 recruiting class...9-4 NIU...#94 recruiting class...12-2, your BCS busting NIU Bottom dwellers in the NCAA last year? Southern Miss...#70 Colorado...#36 Akron...#118 NMSU...#98 Washington...#21 Auburn...#10 UMass...#115 (not really fair, they are transitional) Idaho...#114 Kansas...#74 Illinois...#64 So, a majority of bottom 10ers were in the top/middle pack of the recruiting standings...hmm... Wrong again. In recruiting, you pick your players THAT FIT INTO YOUR SYSTEM. Just because you have a good recruiting class doesn't mean anything. At all. You have Houston alums in Houston...cool...clearly none in Dallas, considering I got questions if we were playing Hawaii when we played in Denton...and that wasn't my point. Not to mention we brought more fans to Houston and had more enthusiasm in your dead atmosphere game day experience...if you grew up in Houston, you'd realize there's a reason that the majority of Houston college students leave to UT, A&M, Tech, UNT, UTA, UTD, SFA, etc. 150k-200k is not true, you have about 220k TOTAL alumni...http://www.uh.edu/alumni/ ...wrong again...seems a little low, maybe it's registered alumni, either UH should probably work on their wording... We have half of your total alumni in DFW alone...most get jobs in DFW, the rest go and make waves in music, business, film, etc... But, come on, this is a proud alum of UH, I guess we are definitely inferior... /myGL2greatness style rant1 point

Because we haven't had a player considered to be even a possible 1st rounder since... since... Kenny Lyons? The AD would not be doing their job if there wasn't a press conference for this announcement. Good luck, Tony. I have no doubt your next coach will be able to put you in a position to succeed.1 point

I'll overlook your ignorance. The reason that Uof H is called "Cougar High" is because it was started by and part of the Houston ISD. It began as a Junior College in 1927 and in 1945 the Texas Legislature placed it under th authority of the State of Texas. Houston did not integrate until 1960, did not have integrated sports programs until 1964 and did not join the SWC until 1976. NT was integrated in 1954 and sports integrated in 1956. I believe that you are correct when you state the Aggies, from Houston I would add, came up with "Cougar High". They were mocking their hometown University.1 point
