As mentioned, they were running skeleton punt return drills at the beginning of practice. The returners were Chancellor, Harris (#9), Jones (#13) and Wilhite (who is now wearing #21). Believe it or not Chancellor and Harris were almost neck and neck in their returns, but Chancellor was a shade better because he has a little bit better peripheral vision. Jones was about a 1/2 step behind them. Wilhite was about a full step behind the other three. Chancellor and Harris were the most elusive. I'm told that before spring is over MANY other players will get a shot at doing returns.8 points

i'm a teacher and do not want to carry one at school and don't think teachers should have them. whacko's will do what they want, when they want...and sadly, i really don't think they can be stopped. no one knows when or where something tragic will happen...5 points

I am also a teacher. I bet a least once a week we have students find keys or purses that a teacher has misplaced. I would hate to add guns to that list.4 points

Just thinking..... Tony might not be a lottery pick now but could u imagine him playing for the heat, okc, spurs, or another contender? Hey young fellow your only job is to block shots and when our guy is doubled go sky for an alley-oop.4 points

We were discussing this at home the last couple of days, and you know, I think Mitchell going pro will be a better recruitment tool than anything else we could have at this rather dismal point, as long as he gets some playing time (and especially if he is better known AFTER this disaster is over - either Benford is gone or shows that he can actually get something done next year if he isn't ousted). I would hate to get some recognition that goes down the crapper if recruits hate the program, but if it hits right as things are going a bit better, then that will be perfect. And perhaps that's why it was good that Mitchell spent another year with us - if things were going to go downhill, it's better that we have time to fix it before his pro career gets us attention than to have it hit in the middle of a terrible period. So if you think about the timing...it may all work out perfectly in the end. Mitchell gets recognition when the UNT BB program kicks back into a decent situation, and a couple of decent recruits later, we may be back in the NCAA tournament (an possibly a couple of games in) like we should have been. Of course I would rather that things had not gone backwards in the first place...but as that is where we are now, this may be exactly the right situation with the best possible timing. As long as things do get better within 1-2 years. Grrr.4 points

Isn't this thread about a press conference for a guy leaving after 1 1/2 of college without a degree?3 points

I can't speak for anyone but myself.... But after reading his post's the past 5 months there is no way in heck I'm joining the Dallas Police Department.3 points

Looked pretty good in passing drills today. Showed some good moves (for someone 6'5") after catches on short-medium routes. Didn't see him catch any long balls.3 points

It's that one conference that is light years ahead of us in football and basketball. Can't believe you've not heard of it.3 points

So, your saying JJ had these yutes on the path to prison, eh? And Benford came in and turned that around, eh? So explain to me how TM was an A-B honor roll student under JJ? And then explain to me the rumors of TM being sich a problem this year? Please, Skiver, explain.2 points

It's easy to feed your babies when someone hands you a five year contract that abysmal performance won't revoke.2 points

"Who's going to feed your babies", huh? Sounds like coach Benford is going the 'better husbands and fathers' route. I'm all for better fathers & husbands graduating from UNT...2 points

TM said nice things about the coach sitting right next to him at a press conference provided by the university.2 points

Who would -1 this? It's completely right. Convenient store inventory is completely different than the students I teach every day. I am completely opposed to teachers carrying guns. Does anybody want the 60 year old English teacher carrying? I sure as heck don't.2 points

Right, because comparing a school to a convenience store makes perfect sense.2 points

The whole "testing the waters" thing is no longer legal, thanks to the NCAA. http://www.draftexpress.com/article/Testing-the-NBA-Draft-Waters-in-2013-4103 Here is a link if you'd like to read further into it. In the past, the NCAA and NBA had a uniform deadline to remove your name from the draft. This date was after the Combine and everything. 2 years ago, the NCAA imposed it's own deadline of "the day before the first day of spring signing period." This date precedes all of the workouts, the combine, etc. This year, the NCAA deadline is April 16. NBA teams can't contact underclassmen until May 2nd. All that said, good luck to Tony in the NBA. You were fun as hell to watch while you were here and we will all be rooting for you. Go Mean Green!2 points

NT softball beats OK State 4-3, snapping OSU's 12-game win streak. Road victory against a Big 12. Nice job, ladies! Jordan Terry knocks in 3 with a single and a HR and, I believe, Simmons picks up the win with a gutsy save by Ashley Kirk. GMG2 points

"1. The quarterback battle Offensive coordinator Mike Canales — one of our favorites — didn’t even wait for someone to ask the question at UNT’s pre-spring press conference. He dove right into the quarterback question when it was time for him to talk about UNT’s offense. UNT brings back two-year starter and two-time team captain Derek Thompson, who has done some good things, and now has Brock Berglund. The former Kansas QB is supposed to be the greatest thing since Scott Hall, which would be pretty great. Here’s the problem. Berglund hasn’t played since high school back in 2010 and has bounced around from school to school. He did spend the fall at UNT running the scout team, which will help. The expectation is that Berglund will win the job, perform like no quarterback at UNT since Hall — the last UNT quarterback to be named all-conference in 2004 — and led the Mean Green, which hasn’t won more than five games in a season in eight years, to a bowl game while it makes the transition to a tougher league in C-USA. And he’s supposed to do this with a team that averaged 20.9 points a game last season, lost two of its best offensive lineman, a key running back in Jeremy Brown and its leading receiver in Ivan Delgado to graduation. And if Berglund can’t do it. Thompson is supposed to. This message will self destruct in five seconds. Ok, it’s not quite “Mission Impossible” but it is a pretty tall order." This is from Vito's ?'s heading into the Spring blog piece. Just thought everyone should read it before declaring Berglund, or anyone, the messiah.1 point

I, for one, applaud the objectivity of a formula using 1 season's worth of results from basketball and football programs, which then awards the "top spot" to a university which was on probation and happens to be located in the same state as the commisioner of the report--The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Further, it is obvious that this 1 season of success is an infallible indicator of future performance. Definitely worthy of further consideration, and continuous reference.1 point

I wish we could track the evolution of what has ruined GMG over the years. SO MANY FACTORS, but never the person reading and internalizing it. Every year, I enjoy hearing new versions of how suddenly the blue cheese has expired and the Twinkies have spoiled.1 point

He doesn't have the coordination or lateral movement to play linebacker. Fullback might be good where he can just go straight and plow the first guy he sees. But I wouldn't give up on him at defensive tackle just yet. He is over 250 lbs at this point so he has a better shot if his technique improves. Yeah, at defensive tackle I hope we take a look at moving Wylie Reinhardt there. I loved watching his film. 6'4", 260+ lbs and mobile enough to make a play or two catching the ball at tight end. He appears to have that nasty mentality to play defense so I could see him being a major player at defensive tackle for us down the road. He could make a good tandom with syd Moore, but we still need depth.1 point

What kind of speed/quickness does he have? I wouldn't be surprise if his size is a bit of a stretch, so would MLB be feasible? Thinking a season ahead, we're looking like we could be in even more trouble at DT once Abbe and Boutwell graduate. We're gonna need some serious stepups.1 point

He came a long way. His freshman year was his first year ever playing football, and he didn't even really know the rules to the game. His strength was always outstanding. To this day he is one of the strongest lifters on the entire UNT team. His technique was not good in high school. All he knew how to do was Bull rush, no pun intended. He's gotten a lot better with his hands, but when in trouble he still relapses back to the bull rush which doesn't work well on 300 lb lineman. I wouldn't be opposed to a move to fullback either, but at defensive tackle if he doesn't keep putting on weight (those measurables are from the beginning of last football season) and learn to use his hands better he'll be toast.1 point

But it's not BS, it happens to be true. http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/ayers.asp ".....William (Bill) Ayers was one of the founders of the Weather Underground, a radical leftist organization formed in 1969 by a group of University of Chicago students who split with the campus-run Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) organization because they disagreed with the SDS's peaceful protest tactics against the Vietnam War. From 1970 until 1974, the Weather Underground carried out violent actions against the government, including bombings at NYPD headquarters, the U.S. Capitol building, the Pentagon and a San Francisco police station, while Ayers (and his wife, fellow Weather Underground member Bernardine Dohrn) went into hiding to evade the FBI. Ayers and his wife participated in some of the early bombings, but criminal charges against them were dropped in 1974 due to illegal evidence-gathering activities by authorities, and in 1980 the couple turned themselves in. Ayers and Dohrn emerged from hiding to become university professors in Chicago; Ayers specialized in education reform and served as an advisor to Chicago mayor Richard Daley, work through which Ayers became acquainted with Barack Obama in 1995. Ayers hosted a meet-the-candidate gathering at his home......" Rick1 point
