  1. He'll go down as the most misused/underutilized talent in North Texas history. Had he ever once taken the court next to a big man even approaching the level of a Wooden, Williams, Big George, or Tramster we'd be referring to him as the greatest player in our history.

  2. Not buying some of this thread. The kids know basketball, the hard work, and they know their roles. And I know they wanted this bad. If you're going to say that they were not buying into this until recently, then you have to acknowledge someone or something came in this year and spoiled them. Here's hoping for a good run in the tourney. gmg.

  3. I am saying that if the guy coaching in Baton Rouge would have been here, and the first game of the season our only outside threat breaks his foot, we would have this odah as a center instead of coleman. PJ Hardwick would not be here, insert another back up guard. maybe we have 4 more wins and 4 less losses. But you can make the arguement that there would be a number of people that would be calling for MY GOOD FRIEND JOHNNY JONES job. All theoritcal I know, but you could certainly argue this. I told all of my friends that this was going to be the year. I have egg on face also with all of this. I am made fun of every day at my beloved Denton Country Club about how bad we stink. All of these guys played golf with Johnny when he was here. But here we are. injuries, new system, no shooters.... I can go on and on. Nobody is more dissapointed than me, but here we are. The perfect storm happened in the wrong way, but to condemn the coach is ridiculous. A body of work cannot be judged over 3 months, and I am not going to do it.

  4. I know for a fact with Fran F. it was not about money. The decision was made that Benford was the better choice, with the package of Evans, Lundy etc coming with him. So everyone is correct, if this turns out to be a huge failure, this falls squarely on Ricks shoulders, and I promise you he takes responsibility for his actions and understands the consequences. He has accomplished every goal he ever set out to at this place, including elevating the basketball program. He is going to bring us baseball, (the renderings of the stadium are beautiful according to Don Lovelace). We have to win in FB, MBB, and WBB. He hired Johnny Jones and had no control over him leaving. We have a core donor base in place that within reason will make sure hiring coaches will be about the best candidate, not money. This hire was not about money.

  5. I guess I need to update an earlier statement. Anybody who says that this team would be better off without Mitchell next year or that Mitchell has been an utter disappointment is crazy.

  6. The HOF has a very loose set of requirements So sure Mitchell could get entry, in fact he could be in just on the basis of his first two years. Brings Jamario Thomas to mind. A lot of people don't think he is HOF worthy despite him having the greatest year ever for a NT running back. He had more yardage and success in his freshman year than the other three combined. If he had that great year his senior year, everyone would remember him as much better player not the player that never lived up to his first year. Mitchell likewise if he reversed his two NT seasons, would be a shoo-in for the HOF. Hopefully, NT will see some more great play out of Mitchell before he leaves NT.

  7. I got another good one that might top the Marshal swim kid one... In Bruce hall I was making sweet love to my girlfriend in the communal showers. We had to sneak in there because it was not a coed shower of course. Two shower stalls over we heard some other couple having sex. We kept going. It was funny, but it got interesting when we walked out of our shower stall and there were two guys next to the other stall drying off. One of the guys was a gay guy that lived down the hall. Good Ol' Bruce Hall!

  8. I don't have any great dorm stories. My best stories are from living in apartments around campus. Somehow I don't think anyone will top the story about the Marshall swimmer and the carrot on the CUSA board.

  10. C-USA has taken on way too many new moveups and startups as it is. No way. And Georgia State has nowhere near the potential of Charlotte and Old Dominion. http://atlanta.sbnation.com/2012/9/26/3412084/2012-georgia-state-football-attendance

  12. Here is what the 2011 issue of Phil Steel's "College Football" had to say about Brock when talking about the Kansas Jayhawks. "Then add in Brock Berglund, a dual threat true frosh who I project to be the starter. No matter who wins the starting job, I look for improved QB play". In this same issue, he has Brock listed as the #28 best nationally incoming QB. Anybody ready for spring ball?

  13. Wow. Benford really has the team hitting on all cylinders. I guess him standing up to the players earlier in the season, holding them accountable and sitting them at certain points is finally getting through to these young men. It is as if the players are finally starting to accept their roles and responsibilities, along with some improvement by Benford as well

  14. To me, WKU is still head and shoulders above ASU or ULL. Much better overall athletic program, athletic budget and a rich basketball tradition.

  15. maybe I missed it, but one name I have not seen in this thread on DT's is Dylan Mcdorman. (spell check on his name) Connor brought him home a few weeks ago with Shaun Mckinney....first both are great kids....but I could tell Dylan has some nasty...I am anxious to see him this spring.

  16. This is all "century" team, therefore you consider all the players not just the one that played during your fandom. If not just give it to all the recent players, because obviously they would have the edge. I certainly understand the bias for players during your time, plus it is hard to talk about players you know nothing about. However, some players should be obvious just by their accolades The Dickey teams were great by recent standards but they were not close to the sixties and mid seventies Fry teams. . Also IMO, the picks should be based on their play at NT not in the pros. Greene played here his whole career not two years. NT had three straight years of first round draft picks. Greene, Hardman, Dunlap. By the way, NT had 14 players drafted from the 67-70 teams. D Dickey for coach, you got to be kidding? Fry responsible for the spiral in NT football until 1994 because he left? I have never heard anyone express that. Some weird conclusions there. Fry was a great ambassador for NT when he was here. DD should have wore a muzzle. Despite my commentary, I enjoy your broadcasts; but disagree with your viewpoint on a lot of this one. Keep them coming.

  18. I have to go with Odus Mitchell. Led the team through integration way before any other schools, had a winning record, great teams in the late 60's with players that succeeded in the NFL and were some of our greats and coached here for two decades. Put him at any other powerhouse school and he would be a legend. DD couldn't keep his foot out of his mouth, had the aforementioned record, has a practice field named after him because we were held hostage by a self promoting furniture salesman and whose success was really a testament to the leadership of players like Scott Hall, Jonus Buckles, etc...

  20. Utter disappointment? No. This year he has fallen far short of the high expectations he set for himself. But he has been the most amazing player I have ever seen play for North Texas. Even this season, he was far and away the Sun Belt leader for blocks (83, 2.68 pg - #2 had 67, 2.23 pg). He was #4 in rebounds. He was #13 in scoring, even as defenses devoted themselves to stopping him first and foremost. Is that HOF material? Certainly not, at least not yet. I'm not sure 1 1/2 seasons gets anybody into the HOF, even if that person is playing at an elite level. We'll see if he sticks around. Hopefully he does, at least one more year, and hopefully he and the coaching staff get things figured out so that he can realize his potential at North Texas.

  24. Having CJ back really changed the team. Even though he is rusty, he can get to the basket almost at will. Alzee was a monster getting to the basket and getting fouled because of it all night. Niko is really playing well, and the combination of him getting big minutes, Jordan becoming a consistent outside threat and CJ returning make this a much better team. The reason why is Niko picks up rebounds while Tony tries to block every shot. And CJ just opens up the offense. And anybody who says this team would be better off without Mitchell next year is crazy.

  26. No, no...that was in direct response the fact that you're capable of calling an entire generation "stupid" in one thread (this one) and then turning around and, phone or not, mis-spelling a good half dozen words in a 3 sentence paragraph (a paragraph that berates our education system, no less) and then not recognizing the irony/humor in that. If you feel that's not contributing to the conversation...you're absolutely right...but then again, when you've already resolutely made up your mind on every topic discussed here, what really is the point of doing anything short of busting chops?

  28. If we win more than 20 games next year and win a game in the NCAA's I'll drive the effing Benford bandwagon. The chance of that happening is pretty damn low.

  29. I want a 20 plus win season next year and postseason play. Follow that up with more respect in two years, an NCAA bid at an 11 to 14 seed which gives us a chance to win. That is what I want. Any thing less than that is failure. And I expect the same thing on the women's side too. I will also go on record as saying we must win 7 next year in football. I will agree that all of this momentum in fundraising we have built up will vanish like a fog rolling out if there is no success on the field. I am tired of supporting a loser, even if it is our loser. 1. Give coaches and kids tools to be successfull (aka facilities). This takes money. 2. Hire the right people at every level. This takes money 3. Fund scholarships for student athletes. This takes money Hope to have a beer with some of you "haters" in hot springs. That includes you emmitt. David

  30. I wish you wouldn't curse so much in your posts. It really makes you seem unintelligent.
    1 point
  31. He isn't the head coach and doesnt have final say in anything about this program. Why would there be any negative posts? Sports are results oriented. Our results with the most talented team in our history beyond suck. But you are right, Evans would make a great interm coach when we finally decide to ax Benford. While we are issuing questions, I have one for you. If we win less than 10 games next year, will you admit this is a collosal failure of a coaching hire?
    1 point
  32. Inconsistency is a sign of youth and/or poor coaching. But, the thing is, we have been pretty consistently bad, which, with the talent on this team, simply leaves poor coaching.

  33. For those who thinks it is about the players, missing Walton, or just not having the talent, keep in mind we took the #14 team in the country, a team that has beaten Butler twice and only lost 2 games in A-10 play, down to the wire at in their arena. Did we benefit because they play a strict man to man on defense? Yes, but it doesn't change what happened. And the game before we lose to LaLa at home because we can't figure out a zone defense and don't play any defense. Its obvious the talent is present. Still 2 open scholarships to fill.

  36. You lost me when, regarding selecting the coach of the All-Century Team, you stated that you had to go off of results...and you picked Dickey. He was 20 games under .500 for his career.

  37. Don't you get it? It has nothing to do with a good or bad hire. It has to do with bitching. It took me awhile, but I get it now. If the team loses, bitch. If the team wins, bitch that they didn't win by enough. If somebody thinks there were 3600 at a game rather than announced 3610, bitch. On and on and on. Easier to bitch than be a part of the solution.... Regardless of what happens in two years the bitching will continue.

  40. I was asked to define what my definition of success is. I did not put a probability or a prediction if this is what was going to happen. New conference, better overall opponents, basically the same players with one more year of experience...........Could be very tough for anyone to have instant success. But that is where the bar has been set. Coach Benford has been around long enough to know that with the type of commitment some people have made, they expect the same success that made them able to help. Fail in business, get fired. Fail in coaching, get fired way faster. However, three months cannot define a body of work in this business. So UNT90, you can start shuddering, Benford will coach here at least three years.

  44. Here's my problem. It's all fine and dandy to say where "the bar is set". And at pretty much any school not named North Texas not reaching that bar would have consequences. I just have my doubts ( and recent proof to back them up) about whether performance will trump "budget" when it's nut cutting time.

  45. Curious to know what the thoughts of the board are concerning TM's long-term Mean Green legacy. It's possible he has a notable NBA career yet his time here has been utter disappointment (in my view). I contend that he would not be worthy of NT HOF consideration as it currently stands, but have a feeling there would be plenty of revisionist history if he establishes himself in the NBA. Thoughts?

  46. Neither of teams would grow the CUSA market. I'd rather CUSA take Georgia State for the market potential.
