Do you really think it's a big secret that things are not going well for UNT basketball? Do you really think this board has any influence? And you say bitching on this message board does more harm than good on one hand, yet you turn around and say if you want to be heard, talk to decision makers on the other hand, suggesting that what is posted on here doesn't matter. Pick your poison, please. Here is the deal with me. I don't think I need to be wasting my and the AD's time telling the AD how to do their job or complaining about the way they do it. They know there is a problem and that they need to fix the problem. Calling them and wasting their time telling them something they already know is pretty idiotic, don't you think? Also, this is a fan message board. Posting crap like predictions, favorite made up uniform, and bitching about UNT's lack of athletic success is the closest thing we have to a tradition on this board. You should have figured that out by now. Maybe it's that whole reading comprehension thing. Expect more ---------> Give Accordingly.4 points

I think you've got it backwards here. We need a threat of an effective passing game to take the pressure off of the run game. Teams loaded up the box last year and dared us to throw. Either Thompson's lack of accuracy or our WR's inability to run a proper route, probably a little of both, killed us.4 points

You obviously didn't see their recruiting class, their coach, and the Bacon State score. UTSA is going to come into C-USA and bust some heads. At least, that's what I've been told.3 points

Didn't Dodge try that same concept with the spread?? You have to have the athletes/speed in order to run the spread in college.2 points

If Lama wants to move the ladies up in rankings they need to split these matches at the least. This will help them come NCAAeeding time and possibly shift them into a 3 seed and allow them to stay away from a Top 16 team first round, granted they got a bum draw last year as a 3 seed drawing #17 Nebraska. These matches and the upcoming ranked matches such as #24 GA Tech, #52 Columbia, #65 Wichita State, #33 Tulsa, and #58 GA State matches are huge matches for ranking and seeding. Sleeper matches to watch out for are ULM and Louisville2 points

It wasn't just the Troy game; it was like that all year. I looked at the scoring vs. the yards gained for the 14 teams that will be in CUSA next year and we were 13th in scoring. Our yardage wasn't terrible and our time of possession was good but we couldn't score touchdowns. We averaged a td once every 27.5 plays. That was the same as 3-9 FAU. The only ones that were worse were 3-9 UTEP (28.7), 2-10 Tulane (31.4) and 0-12 Southern Miss (30.4). La Tech scored every 13.2 plays but they were exceptional. Basically, we were just pathetic in the red zone. Yes, it sucks to come away empty when a field goal is missed but we were forced to rely on that too many times.2 points

Benford's departure could be the success story for the end of the season.2 points

Precisely. We have 3 returning starters and 1 guy who saw significant time last year in LaChris. O-Line was probably the best unit last year. They'll likely be the best unit again this year. I'm not looking for improvements on the O-Line to put the Mean Green over the top this year. The other units need to step up to the O-line's level.2 points

I don't think we even need a good QB to get 7 wins. We need an average one. One that won't toss the ball 20 yards over WRs heads into the stands when you need a TD. That was my "Derek Thompson play of infamy"2 points

Not to beat the point, but reading and comprehension are two entirely different things...in English class I never seemed to comprehend the point of some of the BS I was required to read and report on..I never saw the little "fine points" that my professor seemed to think was obvious. Who knew the mast on the ship Billy Bud was on was really an analogy for Christ on the Cross??? I mean, really...who knew? Not me when I was in freshman English at UNT...thus, reading and comprehension...two different things. And, i have never read that story again to see if it "jumps out" at me now...prof ruined a lot of good literature for me.2 points

Is UNT one player away from a noticeable level of improvement? I will admit I haven’t suffered the long term UNT frustration most are going through, but I am a University of Kansas grad so I do understand football futility. Last year’s UNT’s core group of players had the ability to look respectable verse LSU and played really well against Kansas State. Curious to hear thoughts on would a Lance Dunbar type player being on last year’s team provided a 7-8 win team? Would a player of TY Hilton’s ability have a significant impact on next year’s team? I recall reading about the “Flutie Effect” on BC’s rise in applications for enrollment, donations, ticket sales and overall brand following 1983 Heisman Trophy year. In recent time I look at Cam Newton at Auburn and what Johnny Football has done at Texas A&M. There is no doubt that the Johnny effect will bolster TAMU’s recruiting pipeline for the next few years as well as (ticket & merchandise sales, alumni donations, etc.)…lord knows it’s improved their athletic programs brand. I personally see improvement between the Dodge and MAC programs…. I’m hoping UNT is that “one” player away from making a significant difference.1 point

Went to my first two tennis matches this weekend. On Sat. UNT pretty much destroyed future CUSA mate ODU 6-1. On Sunday, the ladies came back to beat a tougher Lamar squad....it was over at 4-0 UNT, but I don't recall the exact final score. In doubles against Lamar today, UNT made some excellent comebacks after a slow start to take the doubles point, then took care of business in the singles matches. All this, great weather, free admission and they gave us free pizza and popcorn on Saturday, then free bagels, rolls, coffee, juice, fruit, cheese and snacks on Sunday. All this and I got to see UNT win TWICE! Greatness...Coach Lama is doing a great job for UNT...really a family atmosphere with games for the fans at the doubles/singles switchover break! If you have not seen a match, I highly recommend that you stop by and watch one soon. Great fun and these ladies are all business once they step on the court. Really had a great time! Well done ladies! You rock!1 point

Pointless exercise. At best, we win 1 game in Hot Springs. Even if we advance to the Belt tourney final and lose this is still a disaster, but if this happens, UNT and some on this board will point to that as proof that Benford is turning the corner.1 point
-
I hate to say it, but I just don't see it. On the other hand, if we win the first one I'll likely be loading up the car and heading to H Springs.1 point
-
If we won out through Hot Springs, we'd be 17-18 headed to the Dance. Then we'd get one of the First Four games. Say we win that initial round we're .500!!! --- we'd THEN have to play Indiana or something. So, there is basically no way we can finish .500 or above. No way the season can really be salvaged. Though, if we did all of that (in a miracle) I'd almost say it was a decent season. I mean we'd have our first NCAA win and end the season winning 8 of 9.1 point
-
Say, somehow we pull the SBC championship out of our asses and lose in the first round of the dance is still a disappointment, so no. I could care less what happens in the SBC tourney, to be honest, this season is unforgiveable.1 point

Take Houston out of that, and you have a true statement. I guess "upside" is somewhat subjective and speculative, but there can be no doubt that Houston currently has better fan support than North Texas.1 point

"...could spell the end of the big east and be to our benefit?" Don't know what that benefit would be or what you had in mind, outoftown, but if we're talking the SMU's the UH's, the Memphis, etc, getting in bed with North Texas conference-wise lets once again be brutally realistic & try to understand that they no more want to be with UNT than we want to align our school with former Southland Conference schools. Now had all of our favorite school in Denton, Texas, America, the last 30 plus year only tried to go another direction than trying to fit a 1-AA (FCS) square peg program into a 1-A (FBS) round hole kind of program with those we kept hiring decade after decade and just kept on retaining that adminstrative group (none of whom could ever get jobs at the next level) then this whole scenario for North Texas with the aforementioned Big East (former CUSA) schools might be different today. We just have to bloom where planted but who is to say that will be all so terrible? This excerpt below from a Tulsa U alum from his post on www.insidetulsasports.com : "TU is what it is a small private school, stuck in the midwest Competing against Big 12/SEC schools 4 pr & recruits Nat'lly? @ TU's level , nBmeek or NConf USA, no one cares. Win & win Big in ur subAQ conf that'll get u the pub u need. otherwise, its a wash nationally, Locally, I doubt u see much drop in support & attendance IF any @ all. I Guarantee N Tex/UTSA/La Tech will bring more fans to games here than than Houston/SMU/Tulane ever did. NConf USA offers all 4 major Texas TV/Recruiting markets N Tex/UTSA/L Tech already have better fan support & more up side than Houston/SMU/Tulane." GMG!1 point

For sure. Actual reading, and comprehension are certainly different. But often times, people will alter their arguments, key on one particular point and neglect others, or just flat-out change the point, then accuse another person's "reading comprehension" when that person is trying to keep up with the changing path. I just think it's a thinly veiled, petty way of saying, "you're dumb, I'm smart". Pass the Kool-aid!!1 point

Tired of people bringing up "reading comprehension" ability to denigrate other people. It's dumb. Obviously UNT90 can read.1 point
-
Reading for comprehension is evidently not a strong suit. As I've explained numerous times in the past, I've never taken a position on any coaching changes on this board. I've never said talent doesn't matter. I've never attempted to foolishly predict a number of wins in any year. I've consistently said that bitching on this board causes more harm than good. The least amount of harm is that it has no impact on what you want. I've also said that if you want to be heard, speak to decision makers. I've also explained how you attain more access and a louder voice. Finally, I have very clearly stated there should be a high level of expectations and committment. So, Bitch less-----> Give more1 point

Just one question, Emmitt...do you have cheese with all your "whine"? Or, maybe just cookies? Funny, I recall in one post your claiming that you were a Mean Green Club Volunteer Rep...if that is really is so, isn't the job of a Volunteer Rep to help raise money for UNT athletic-scholarships? How insulting of you to do such a thing!!!! Brow beating folks to help and all that....such an insult.1 point
-
If KRAM is insulting I'm not sure how to define many of the comments you and others make on this board. Oh... How has the bitching had a positive impact so far? Bitch less---->Give more.1 point

Jim, appreciate your comments, but don't buy the "stuff" that several folks here are trying to sell you regarding what this Coach is and where this program can be in a couple of years. Remember, these are the same folks who have been telling everyone that attendance would drop to 500 per game. Yet, facts are, UNT has the 3rd highest attendance in the Sunbelt this year...behind only Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. The majority of UNT fans and supporters are not buying what these few, loud and vocal that they may be, are trying to sell. There is a difference between ability and execution, youth and experience, willingness to learn and to be coached and stubbornness, athleticism and skill, etc. things are changing and changing for the better. Pre-season hype does not always equate to reality when play begins. This is not the same team that came one game from winning the tournament last season. Odufawa is not grabbing rebounds, UNT's two most skilled players, CJ and Brandon have been out most the year, Holman (arguably the best UNT player heading into last year's tournament is gone, etc., etc. Put a healthy CJ in, a healthy Walton in, have Holman back in uniform, etc., etc. and this is a very different team at this point in the season. All who refuse to see this possibility are simply not willing to admit the differences. Without these players, teams can sag down and pretty much negate TM knowing that UNT is not a good outside shooting team. Now that PJ has started to shoot and Jordan has found his stride, teams will no longer be able to focus on TM with two or more defenders. This also helps Roger Franklin. Defense has suffered as without the skill players and many playing out of position (ala Nikko) there is not the quickness/skill to stop other teams more skilled players. Get "our guys" back and healthy, give these players more time in the current system, and BINGO...this is a much different team. One might also recall that this is a very young team...sophomores and freshmen abound. Underclassmen often struggle at learning the more sophisticated college game. Anyway, don't let the vocal few get you down. No matter how much they played in HS and claim to be experts. Heck, some never even played HS ball, yet want all to believe tat they know all there is about coaching college level basketball. You know, it may be time to either support this team and Coach or not. The fact is that he and the majority of the team will be back next season. Some just need to either get over that fact or move on down the road if it is just too painful for them to bear. The facts are that this team has not won the number of games that anyone expected. But, the fact also remains that this team has much left to play for this season. Personally, I plan on being there to see how the season plays out...win or lose. Here's hoping there will be more wins left than losses.1 point

1) I remember an interview of Rick Neuheisel right after he was fired from UCLA. He said that each school's administrators (not the athletic department, mind you, but the BOR, Chancellors, Presidents, etc) decide what level they want to compete at, what kind of success rate they want, then fund their programs accordingly. Some administrations publicly demand one level of success while funding it at another. At the time, UCLA was proclaiming publicly that they should be beating USC, but they were funding their program at far lower levels than USC. It didn't make sense to demand success from the coach when the school wasn't giving him the budget to truly compete. At UNT, we almost never hear any public demands from our administration (and maybe that tells us all we need to know, really). However, we can tell from our budget at what level our admins more or less expect us to compete. If we cannot come up with the buyout money, or some creative solution to get Benford out, it means that our Administration is content with a losing basketball program until the cost of removal reaches their desired level. Obviously they will hope for better returns, but inaction means that $1.2 million is too high a figure to come up with. Relative to what our competition has recently paid for buyouts or salaries, that will show you where they expect us to compete. 2) I've never seen Berglund play. I have no idea just how much better he is than DT, McNulty, etc. However, I have seen what a DMac coached defense looks like over the course of his 30+ year career. I have more faith in his ability to produce better results from our defense when he has a full stable of defensive backs to complement our very good LB corps and improving Dline. I think a dominating defense as the anchor to this team could get us to .500 single handedly. Hell, I lived through the DD years, so I KNOW this to be true. If Berglund gives us a difference maker at QB, that's icing on the cake. I think I'm more or less agreeing with you, no?1 point

Because so many people throw around illegitimate 4.3 and 4.4 40 times people think anything else is slow. People were complaining about Jimmerson too because his rivals profile had his 40 time at 4.8. Also, Dajon Williams was listed at a 5.14 40 on his espn recruiting profile. Take listed 40 times with a grain of salt. Watch a players highlights to judge how fast he is when it matters, in the games.1 point
