  5. I cite the Iowa games because it is a 2-0 when it should be a 1 for 1 or, at the very minimum, a 2 for one. We have 2 dates away for nothing more than a pile of money. If ULM can get a 1 for 1 with Wake Forrest, we should be able to do the same with Iowa. We don't. Ever. The Iowa games also SEVERLY limit scheduling flexibility for a number of years.

  6. I agree....Iowa was 4-8 last year....much better playing them over most any SEC team.

  7. I know that you have been a long time supporter of North Texas, both academically and athletically, but aren't we splitting hairs here? Someone would argue that by stopping at the goal line, it builds anitcipation, or someone could argue that by walking out in a "Swarm" as Green59 alluded to is too slow, while someone else would prefer they sprint out of the "tunnel" through smoke, touch Spiriki and keep on running to the sidelines. Maybe I am getting old and cranky, but it seems like everything this program or athletic department does today is attacked in criticism or suggestions. We love the uniforms, we hate the uniforms, the uniforms need to be tweeked, they should be replaced, recruiting sucks, recruiting is pretty good considering how we have performed lately, Benford sucks, the basketball players suck, start baseball, why waste money on baseball? and the list goes on and on. Now, I want North Texas to succeed in every endeavor whether athletics or academics. I want every hire to be the right one. Honestly, the local and some national media were touting the Benford hire as a great hire, much better than SMU and geriatric Larry Brown, so RV wasn't the only one that might have been wrong in this hiring. Benford surrounded himself with years of coaching experience on the bench, yet still the results have been much less than expected. Is it Benford's fault? Is it the players fault? Who knows, but many people, posters on here included, loved this hiring when it took place. A year ago everyone loved McCarney and what he was bringing to the program. From experienced assistants to a true strength program to building relationships with the high school coaches of our state, to reaching out to the alumni, community and students he could do no wrong. Then the 2012 season happened and it all changed. Could many not see that Dodge's "hail mary" of signing almost exclusively JUCO's in his last class was doing to the depth and senior leadership of this program, or are our memories and attention spans that short? We rolled out new uniforms for the opening of Apogee and hosted Houston. People loved it and loved the uniforms although many wished the North Texas would have been replaced on the helmets. A year later people were complaining about the inability to fill the stadium even after seven straight losing seasons and bitched that we fell a few thousand short of capacity. Who should we blame? Let's blame RV, the only AD that has come to North Texas, spelled out his vision for the department and facility upgrades, and stayed around long enough to see this vision start to take place. He led the construction of Apogee and secured a $20 million sponsorship in the worst economy any of us have experience, save the few extremely old timers that lived through the depression. Under his watch we have also experienced the building of the Athletic Center, practice fields, tennis center, the purchase of the Liberty Christian property, conversion of this property to include an academic center, indoor practice facilities for softball and golf, a volleyball center, a soccer stadium, a softball stadium with sponsorship, the current construction of a dedicated basketball facility and the obvious near future construction of a baseball stadium. He also has on his future agenda a new track and field facility, possible center court for the tennis facility and an indoor practice facility for football. And let's not forget the introduction of tailgating to North Texas sporting events. Has he been perfect? No, but who is? Shanice Stevens was a disaster and surprisingly to many, so was the hiring of Todd Dodge, and Benford may end up in this category before long, but overall the man has accomplished much more than many of us ever thought possible. Emmitt, who I admire for his dedication to North Texas, and others may call me an apologist, but that is far from the truth. I believe I am a realist. I am old enough to realize that changes of the magnitude that North Texas needed to and still needs to make don't happen overnight. Unfortunately, we now live in a "I want it now" disposable society where many no longer have the patience to see things through that take time to change. I think back to where we were 10 or even 5 years ago and am amazed at the changes I have seen. I grew up going to Fouts thinking it was the greatest place on earth. Then I visited other stadiums as I grew up and realized how poorly the administration at North Texas supported the programs I loved. The changes that needed to be made were monumental to say the least. North Texas never, ever asked alumni to give back. They only targeted a few with deep pockets that seemed to fund everything, everything but athletics. RV and AD's before him were told these people were off limits to approach for giving to athletics, but RV pushed and pushed until some of the walls finally started to fall. The current administration is the most athletic friendly in our history, yet some continue to criticize them for what they don't do. Again, where we are today compared to ten years ago is mind boggling to say the least. Now, are we where we all want this program and university to be? No. Denton is still Denton meaning the majority still shoot down development every chance they get. They barely support the high school programs, two, Ryan and Guyer, that are incredibly successful and are filled with young men and women that are Denton's own, so naturally they still don't connect with NT. Will that ever change? I am beginning to doubt it, so let's go after the current students and young alumni and build support from within, which I think is the path NT has chosen. I want nothing more than for North Texas to succeed and I hope 2013 is the year this finally happens. Let's all support this university and program the best each of us is able and continue to see great things happen at North Texas. Done.

  9. You know, that was just salt to the wound that still hasn't healed from that massacre in Houston. Losing to Texas 77-20 is awful, but at least you get paid well for it. Losing 77-20 to Rice, in my opinion, is the low point of this program since we moved back up to FBS competion in 1995.

  10. I vote Blakeley .... but Spika was facing better competition.... the MVC.... the best basketball conference in America at the time...Spika may have been better..... UCLA and various teams may been been better but the MVC was the toughest end to end. The ACC was still all-white and not even close really as a conference, but some teams were.. At one time in my senior year 5 of the top 10 were MVC teams . I don't even remember Miller.. just remember some down years then. Houston was by far the best in Texas in Miller era.

  12. That would be great if on National TV! Think of the costumes folks could wear to the game. Little ones are often allowed to "stay up late" on Halloween anyway, so bring 'em to Apogee for the game....could even "trick or Treat" with the little folks early...it is dark at about 5PM that time of year, and then head over to Apogee...a win-win perhaps. Let's see if this becomes official...could be interesting. Think of the great halftime show that could be developed as well. How about we set up "trick or treat" tables at Apogee before the game...safe and fun way to grab some sugar!!!!

  15. For people that think Idaho isn't a step up from Texas Southern, I know the first game of the season pretty much sells itself, but let me give another perspective. As a college student, a very high percentage of other, more uninformed students kept calling Texas Southern Division II. Most students don't know the difference between FCS (D-IAA) and Division II. That won't be a problem with Idaho, so we should see more students leaving the hill at game time and actually walk into the stadium. Also, it's harder to sell tickets if potential buyers are being misinformed by others that the game is against a Division II school.

  24. Have you ever heard of Ole Miss being referred to as anything other than Ole Miss? That's the point. They do not wish to be The University of Mississippi. They want to be Ole Miss so that is what they put forward. RV wants the world to know us as North Texas, followed by Mean Green and lastly Eagles which is how it is put forward. Many on this board suffer from the "Curse of Knoweledge" We know who we are so it clouds how we think the world should see us. The casual college football fan though really has no clue. One key to effective branding is repetition and frequency. If a person flips on the TV in the middle of a play and sees the ball about to be snapped they will see "North Texas" on the helmet. It is an instant get. They dont have to ask anyone in the room. And they see that play after play after play. Put the SOW or interlocking NT and they wont know until an announcer says it or they look to the score (if it is on screen.) Bash him all you want but from a branding perspective (introduction/education to/of the consumer) RV is doing it the right way. Especially considering we've never had any helmet design last more than 6-7 years in our Div 1/FBS history.

  26. Never mind the fact that all Syracuse runs is 2-3 and they recruit athletic big guys who can run it and run it well by matching up with people and trapping people and making it hard on anybody they play because of their length. Also because you have to be patient against their zone it often times forces other teams to take bad 3's because of their length. But what do I know. I don't talk to players or don't play at the rec to get inside info to enhance my IQ. But ask anybody other than Syracuse about a 2-3 and they will tell you that you are going to give up open outside shots.

  32. THIS! (although I still think that Idaho helps to sell interest in our first game better than the TSU's of the world) And I would add that in selling North Texas football, you are selling (some of you knew I would eventually go here) the WHOLE GAME EXPERIENCE. This is opening night. This is where everyone puts on their best gear-costumes-uniforms and celebrates THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS. And it sets the tone for the rest of the season. Many on this board couldn't care less for all the extra stuff (aka PAGEANTRY), but that is what sets the college games apart from the pro game experience.

  35. I posted this yesterday from a different thread. Amazingly, in less than one day, a student reporter for the NT Daily writes a column that validates the belief that this school has a large amount of people connected to it that still loather athletics. HIs article highlights the real animosity from a large segment of the university that still feels UNT athletics is a waste and is unsupportable. Read the highlighted sentence below, which I posted in response to what has held this university's athletic teams from making much progress over the last 60 years, especially when compared to the schools in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. It doesn't matter if its the early 70s (vote to end football), early 80s (allow the program to go down to 1-aa), late 90s and early 00s (vote down every single attempt to fund a stadium), the student body has steadily shown how little they care about sports here. I'm here to tell you that its dweebs like this guy who will go on to work at the DRC and work to keep up the mainstream thought in Denton that UNT athletics isn't worth it because it hurts our "value" proposition--iow, we can't be as cheap as we want to be here because evil football costs too much. If the university doesn't want to pay to play at the FBS level, then just quit wasting our time. greenminer, on 11 Feb 2013 - 20:54, said: I think those decades were full of the thought that we are first and foremost a fine arts and music school, with a huge focus, as well, on educating teachers. Nothing wrong with any of those, either, but for whatever the reasons, that led to the most of the UNT and Denton community loathing athletics, especially spending anything on them. I'm still convinced that this university's leadership, faculty, alumni, and students care waaaayyyyyy more about the Green Brigade than they do about the Mean Green. The One O'Clock Lab Band matters way more to the university's reputation within those groups previously listed, in my opinion, than the performance of our athletic teams. And I think we love the history of being an affordable college that has been a great place for teachers to attend, instead of cultivating our connection with DFW businesses to an even better level than we have done over the years. Like it or not, business majors, engineering majors, and science majors have the best ability to be your bigger donors down the road, if they have been given a reason to want to give back. I love going to watch a concert at the Murchison Center or to hear about the many Grammys that a musician or band from UNT have earned, but those events and the headlines they produce are limited to thousands less than what a football game or basketball game brings into the university and the city. College Station, Waco, Austin, Lubbock, El Paso, Ft. Worth, Dallas, and Houston have all benefitted from winning college teams at various times over those same 60 years. It may very welll happen in cities like San Antonio and San Marcos, too. But if you look back at our history, we didn't attend games at Fouts when Fry had ranked teams in the 70s. We didn't attend games when Dickey's teams won in the early 00's. We haven't attended games so far at Apogee to see any marked difference from the years at Fouts, even though the new stadium was 20+ years late in being built. The Super Pit has been routinely empty except for about 1/4 to 1/3 of its seats for most of the last 30 years. Denton is a totally different animal to coach in and play in for college athletics than any of those other towns. Not making excuses with that, just seems to be a fact that cannot seemed to be proven untrue, no matter how much we try to convince us that things may change here for this sleeping giant anytime soon.

  36. So, that's - so far - 85% for SOW or Interlocking NT. Is it useless again to post the number of college that use interlocking letters or school letter abreviations? Defending Benford's coaching ability all season is what most people would call "low basketball IQ". You will get your chance to be proven right, in regard to Benford, since he will be back again, but to me, that shows a low basketball IQ by the BOR and the AD. Actually it shows a low basketball commitment by the BOR and the AD, but that's nothing new. I will say this--you are the perfect fan for the BOR and administration here.
