Craig brought it up...George jumped him about doing that....then tried to perform damage control, saying something like, "oh, weren't you choosing between something semi-important and the LeHigh-UNT game so I told you to choose the important thing". Craig argued back, saying George just told him "don't bother coming". George was not happy that Craig shared it. It was obviously not George's intent to ever let that get out. Fact remains, our play-by-play guy, and one of the most optimistic of all Mean Green faithful was just like the rest of us....beaten down by how badly this team has underachieved.7 points

Mac seems to have everything rocking except the wins (which is the most important part, though). Grades, attendence, kids buying into the system ... all of that is going well. The only way Mac doesn't get more than five years is if we're still slugging along at 3-5 wins a season or if he starts having issues with the other areas that are going so well right now. If Mac can keep the off-the-field stuff going well, win about 7 games a year, and make a bowl every other year or so ... then that will be enough to keep him as head coach for quite a while. If he can throw in a 9 win season every once in a while he'll be the greatest coach we've ever had. I'm not saying this will necessarily keep all the fans happy but I think it will keep Rick, Dr. Rawlins, and the Board satisified.5 points

George apparently talked Craig Miller out of coming up to Denton to watch a game because we "aren't very good". We went from being billed as a top 25 team at the beginning of the season to the play-by-play game announcer telling his former roommate to not really go watch his team. Thanks Benford and RV.4 points

Q: Are the UTEP Miners going to stay in Conference USA? Certainly for the next year. I've learned in athletics that one doesn't really make predictions. Again, it's a distraction. But the instability of conferences really does trouble me, because it's really destabilized intercollegiate athletics in a serious way. We thought for a time there was going to be a merger between Conference USA and Mountain West, and that looked like a very promising strategy. That would have been a very good arrangement for us. Every time you leave a conference, you pay a penalty and when you join a new conference, you have to pay an entry fee, so careless conference changes are very expensive. If you make a mistake I'm not sure I would have been all that excited about joining the Big East conference. We didn't really make a big press for that, and if you look at what the Big East was and what it is today and how they are reconstituting themselves, you have to say, "Gee, was it worth it?" Unfortunately, there's just so much money in intercollegiate athletics. We're very, very happy to be in Conference USA. We have some great new schools in Conference USA, and it has managed the instability about as well as any conference has. ------------------------------- She couldn't be more right and I respect her statements. Good to see someone using judgment like this at a time when knee jerk reaction and grab before researching. http://www.elpasoinc.com/news/q_and_a/ar...f6878.html View the full article4 points

Wins that matter will help recruiting. Go 8-4 this year with victories over Tulsa and La. Tech and just watch the bounce in recruiting. It's all about winning.3 points

Why don't we just invest in some chalkboard paint and cover the helmets in it, then place whatever flavor of the week design this board comes up with. Now we're unique and saving money. Problem solved.3 points

We need an updated look that both appeals to our fan base and our young recruits. One way to do this is to start with the "helmet". The basic helmet logo needs to be somewhat consistent...gone are the fifty shades of green & varity of screaming chickens (i.e. see our 1994 version) good god almighty! Simply use a collegiate interlocked NT....the green could be tweaked over time, the face mask could go black, green, white or grey...depending on what is the current trend...but our helmet logo should be the interlocked NT...this would serve us well for many years into the future. Reasoning for the "Letterman's Association" interlocking NT 1. It's a classic collegiate look. (i.e. UNC or NC, Auburn, Notre Dame "ND", Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Baylor, Colorado, Houston, Indiana, USC or Southern California using interlocking SC on v-neck of jerseys) "we should not put UNT on everything. Texas does not put UT on a baseball hat. North Carolina does not put UNC on a baseball hat" 2. "If we want to be a little bigger...we need a bigger mark"...less of the UNT,FIU, FAU, WKU, UAB, UCF, ECU etc... 3. No other University has the interlocking NT 4. NT is perfectly balanced and symmetrical...makes a great brand or mark for: car emblems, jackets, caps, hats, flags, jewelry, suit pens, cuff links, gameday logo belts, tailgate tents & games, golf balls & ball markers, cups, coozies, mugs, shirts, etc... 5. We used to have it on helmet back in the Mean Joe Green days. "it ties the old with the new" 6. the NT scale & size for this new proposed helmet design was inspired by Texas A&M's "T" 7. there are lots of eagles flying around but no "NT" or "Mean Green" 8. think North Carolina in green 9. this is not a rebrand but our school needs to seriously consider adding the interlocked NT as an additional mark...this will increase mercandising sales. Reason for the "Green with Black Accents" 1. They look great together. 2. It's current and looks less 1970's and 1980's...white shoes & socks, horn stripe pants..."come on man" our team deserves better 3. NT already uses black accents in our other sports uniforms and black is on our football field 4. Our friends in Fort Worth have mastered the art of marketing "black" to their fans base. The TCU players love it! Reason for State of Texas stamp on the under shirt 1. Tastefully eliminates the need to "spell out" North Texas on the helmet. 2. Would need to keep it simple and green...no numbers, logos, words, outline, stars, bars and for sure no SOW. recently...I saw a Houston fan wearing a black Nike jacket with their interlocked UH in red on the chest...it was terrific looking! Once again, I had to hang my head, swallow sadness and continue to be frustrated by zero choices of "cool looking" North Texas apparel. It's mind numbing how awful our apparel choices are.3 points

I think Mac has a fourth year regardless of what the record is this season. I think now with the debacle that the basketball program has become, that we might even see him given a 5th year. In fact, the only way I see him not getting a 4th season would be if RV were to leave.3 points

Who checks the IDs and 86s those that overindulge? Underage drinking is against the law and I can see lawsuits from accident victims if someone drives drunk that was served at the stadium and has an accident. Most people are responsible drinkers but abusers kill it for everyone.3 points

I get the whole don't do it on the air thing, but it is a good example of even one of the most ardent UNT supports not wanting to bring people this year because he told them how good UNT would be this year and doesn't want them to see what this has turned into. I stopped asking people to come around Jan. 1. Why? because I want them to want to come back.2 points

All of the quotes indicate that uniforms are at least a factor. I wouldn't think it would be close to the main selling point, but it is on recruits' checklists. And I don't know why we wouldn't consider that. If your viewpoint is, "Let's have the ugliest and most embarrassing uniforms we possibly can to ensure our student-athletes base their decision on something other than uniforms," we're probably going to have a hard time finding common ground on this subject.2 points
-
and and The above quotes just show that it isn't important to some, just as the article points out that it is important to some. Personally, I would prefer student athletes that are mature enough to base their decision on something other than uniforms. I am not against options, but some of these are plain ridiculous. Plus, I think the article tries to make sell the idea that uniforms make a big differences, but the quotes above and the quotes from coaches stating that some kids like the options, Nike, Under Armour, Addidas, etc... while others don't clearly makes the point that it is purely a guessing game and in the end it is a wash. It will sway some recruits and others won't care.2 points

"But the UNT System board of regents has backed him, and the system has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments on his watch: system-wide enrollment growth of 28 percent, a doubling of enrollment at a growing UNT Health Science Center campus in Fort Worth, Shouldn't Ransom be given credit for that? new buildings including a football stadium in Denton, the opening of a UNT Dallas campus and new law, pharmacy and health profession schools." Why does he get credit for the Football stadium? Did he sit down with Flyer and the SGA and help them draft the wording for the petition that the students voted on? The only thing he should get credit for on the stadium was not meddling in the process. The main reason is it's not one of the approved logos/word marks, so it will never be seen on any licensed university apparel. The Lettermen's Association uses a variation of the (above) interlocked NT logo. Since that organization is something similar to the UNTAA I think they are free to do whatever they please in terms of logo selection so long as they get permission from owners of a logo or create one of their own.2 points

You don't read the Skiver/Andrew greatness on the basketball board, do you?2 points

Yes, really. Sarge is starting to slip athletically. He is in far better shape than most of the people his age but they are not playing sports against 21 year old athletes who train almost daily. Sarge will be 28 before this season starts. He can no longer take the pounding of a regular down player. Let's look at what has happened in the last two years: In 2011 McCoy played in all 12 games; in 2012 he played in 9 games. In 2011 he had 27 solo tackles and 17 assists for a total of 44 tackles; in 2012 he had 9 solos and 13 assists...a total of 22 tackles. That's a third of the solos and half of the total tackles of the previous year. In 2011 Sarge had 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks; in 2012 he had 3.5 tfls and 1.5 sacks. That is a significant drop in productivity. Did he suddenly forget how to be productive? No, he simply got a year older. The rest of my quote indicated that although he was no longer an every down player that he could still be effective in situations. Sarge is likely the oldest college player in the country and, if not, the oldest in the FBS that requires strength and stamina each play. I look on that as a badge of honor and I (especially) understand what the aging process does to the human body. He will still contribute to the best of his ability but I don't think that he's an every down player.2 points

Love the colors and overall look. I'm probably in the minority but I hate the interlocking NT that gets so much praise around here. Put the SOW on the helmet and you have a winner.2 points

It's fans calling it like they see it. Everyone wants Tony to do well, I don't think there is one person who doesn't.. His play on the court causes the fans to react, if its good or bad. Currently it's not great, every stat is lower than last year. When a company sets high expectations to the street and there earnings don't meet expectations, people sell and the stock drops... Mitchell will be a draft choice but far down the line unless he suddenly blossoms at the end of the year. He has literally lost millions this year I am afraid. Judging by his actions this year, both on the court and otherwise he doesn't look like someone that wants to stay at NT. I have stated before and I will again, Mitchell has not gotten worse this year; he has just not gotten better and like everyone on the team is beat down by the loses. Yes, I know his numbers are significantly down from last year, but look at his play the last part of last year. Once teams started consecrating on him, he seldom was a big offensive factor. His defense is not great ether, but his presence in the lane has certain slowed down the opponents. Tony is the most physically gifted player I have ever seen at NT. I think Benford and to a certain extent JJ both have made him too much of the offensive game, He should be IMO about 12 pt 10 rebound guy that focuses on interior defense and inside baskets. I think both fans and coaches have expected him to be something he just is not. We mostly have been thinking him as a lottery pick that should put on mammoth numbers. Although, he can do that occasionally he is just not that player. He is not good at making his own shoots, and really is inconsistent on both ends of the court. If things were cast a little difference, we would all be celebrated an exceptional sophomore player with his best play a head. Instead we are moaning that our BB savior has not come close to living up to our expectations.1 point

Very good question. His stats are solid but not great like you said, but he did play in a very solid district that included the state 5A division 1 champion Allen Eagles, who Lagow and Plano lost to by one point 34-35 on the road. To me, the most attractive aspect of recruiting him would be that if we brought him in, he would likely grayshirt since we are full on scholarships. I got into an argument with UNT90 since I said grayshirts can get 6 years, since their eligibility starts during their second semester of college. Basically, if we grayshirted Lagow, he would have one season off away from the team (per grayshirt rules), a session of spring ball, a redshirt season , and one more session of spring ball before his redshirt freshman season. As with any quarterback, whether it be a 5 star or 2 star, the ability to develop that quarterback makes all the difference. Lagow would be given ample time to develop and progress before ever stepping on the field for us.1 point

I share these concerns already with the tailgating, and am surprised that we haven't heard about any drunk driving incidents already. I hardly think adding beer to the stadium would make people any more or less intoxicated than they already are. I would really, really like it if I could take the A-train to and from games, but nope. Doesn't exist, so I get to pay extra to stay in shitty motels instead. But OldGuy! You could just, you know, not drink! Yeah, you no know me very well, do you?1 point

I happen to have a little experience with government contracting. One reason the pricing is so high (at least with the feds) is that you have to supply organic fiber optics assembled in the United States by unionized autistic adults working for a company owned by lesbians of minority status. Jumping through those hoops wreaks havoc on overhead.1 point
