I know my thoughts don't merit a thread, but the FIU thread is locked. Girls Girls cannot seem to win at home, it been almost a month Outstanding night for Goodwin Florida International lives up to their name with about 7 international players Coley of FIU had 26 but it was the 6'3 Russian that killed NT Teams that were confused with Petersen zone are now destroying it Guys Hallelujah Shoot like that and you should be able to beat anybody I thought Hardwick was the star of the game for NT Not big stats: 9 points 4 tos and only 1 ast But he and Williams did well against that FIU press Hardwick also adding some offense, so they had to guard him Mitchell set the record for fouling 3 point shooters 2 within 1 minute of his playing time, and both made the shoot Seldom called on a made 3 pointer unless you knock someone down He gets absolutely no calls. Really everyone played well on the offensive end The defense was bad, especially when Mitchell was out FIU drove to the basket at will despite being an overall short team Happy for the team, but you are not going to shoot 75% often Not overly excited till they string a few wins together Must have invited every school in the county, paid tickets were the usual pathetic Good crowd until it got close to bed time, crowd shrink to less than half that were there in beginning for last 15 minutes Got to see one dancing group, one dribbling group, one jump rope group Covered all the basics6 points

If you don't understand that your entire post reflects extremely negatively on the head coach of UNT basketball, you just don't understand the role of a coach. Choose to Blame 18-20 year old kids if you want, but next years 18-20 year olds will have less natural ability and the same guy will probably be tasked with motivating them. Disaster.6 points

Respectfully, who I communicate what with is really none of your business. As far as your bitch less, give more mantra, would you continue to throw money at a contractor that was destroying your house? If so, have at it, my friend. Also, this is a fan message board. Maybe you are just unfamiliar with how this works?5 points

When a physucally superior basketball team doesn't play defense or rebound, you have a problem with leadership. Anyone who has a scintilla of basketball knowledge understands this. You don't even have to play the game. The fact that you don't tells me volumes about the credibility of your opinion on the matter. But, everyone has the right to their opinion. So, let me ask you, if we only win 8 games next year (less talented team, more talented competition), will you then finally call for accountability? Or will you continue to blame 18-20 year old kids?4 points

Took Illinois to a 10-2 record, Big Ten title and Sugar Bowl in 2001. Also took them to the Micron PC bowl in 1999. Finished with a losing record at Illinois. Gee, aside from leading his team to a conference title and BCS bowl he sounds a lot like Mac.4 points

Overall, I agree with you about the “the give it time theory.” Top caliber athletic programs don’t just spring up over night. However, I’ve been saying give it time since 2001. The problem isn’t just one bad men’s basketball season. The football program has not had a winning season in over 8 years. The women’s basketball program has had more downs than ups since 2002. There have been just some extremely poor decisions made in recent years that have had a major negative impact on the athletic program (hiring Coach Benford being one of them). I really feel that the UNT athletic program is at a fork in the road and the decisions made in the year or two will decide what kind of success that athletic program will have for the next 20 or even possibly 30 years. While I fully believe that President Rawlins is committed to making major improvements to the athletic program (along with academics and other aspects of university life) I sadly believe that UNT 90 is correct that Chancellor Jackson does not share that vision when it comes to athletics (quite frankly, I’m not sure he shares it for the other aspects as well). This troubles me greatly because this means that there is not a top to bottom commitment when it comes to athletics at UNT. This is something that has plagued the university for decades. So while it is correct that it will take some time (possibly many years) to achieve the goals we all want to see happen, there also needs to be the proper decision making and the proper commitment to the program during this time to make sure these goals are met.3 points

Just out of curiosity, which of your personas talks to the players? Skiver? Andrew? A new one? And what do expect a player to say? "Yes, random stalker dude, I have lost respect for my coach. I'm glad you asked...and why is your hand in your pants?"3 points

Here's a list of the 30 largest state universities (in other words, our peer group): 1. Arizona state 2. Ohio state 3. Central Florida 4. Minnesota 5. Texas 6. Florida 7. Texas a&m 8. Michigan state 9. Washington 10. Penn state 11. Illinois 12. Indiana 13. Michigan 14. Wisconsin 15. Purdue 16. South Florida 17. Florida state 18. Florida international 19. Arizona 20. UCLA 21. Rutgers 22. Maryland 23. Houston 24. Temple 25. Cal state Fullerton 26. California 27. Cal state long beach 28. Cal state north ridge 29. North Texas 30. Georgia How many of the above schools are consistently bad at football, basketball, and baseball? Rivals ranked our football recruiting class at 117. Our men's basketball team has an rpi of 265. Honestly ask yourself this question: are we keeping up with our peers? Also, the idea that athletic success comes at the expense of academics is easily dismissed by this list.3 points

I guess we weren't watching the same game. Yeah, where were you. Coleman got hammered all night. On one of his turnovers, he went high for the ball and got a forearm across the back, knocked him forward and the ball went off his finger tips. No call. The refs don't call enough fouls. FIU grabbed Jordan on a long rebound to stop a breakaway. No call. Jay Bilas did a piece on ESPN's sat morning pregame show on how the rough play is ruining the game. College bb is on apace to have the lowest scoring season since 1952. This is the biggest change in bb since i have been watching (1950s). It doesn't look like the same game. The artistry is gone; it's muscle and banging.2 points

Great win the players hustled on the court and got it down. still far to many turn overs, but once CJ is back we will be a dangerous team. Stillgoing to be hard to beat Middle but anything can happen. Colman is slowly getting more aggressive and he was hacked all day. He gets shoved more then anyone every game and it never gets called.2 points

I can't believe they let Cristobal go. Their AD had his thumb up his rear, and let personal issues cloud his judgment. Cristobal took the worst team in the nation and turned them into champions.. he could have done it again even with the down year.2 points

This thread is about two pages too long. Emmitt01 already told me that while standing at a urinal (no peeking, promise) he overheard Shawn Marion's agent talking to TM and predicting that we would win. I trust emmitt01 because I am totally not him and he used to play pick up ball at the PEB.2 points

You clearly DON'T get it. North Texas coach is the only job in America that I can think of where absolute, unmitigated, total, unabashed failure won't result in termination. Why? Because complete and utter fools like you will still stand around in a circle jerk chanting "next year". Hell, at North Texas being mediocre gets you a contract extension.2 points

This board is probably a bad read for RV, McCarney, Benford and others; but if they care about their customers, they should be reading all of it. I am sure they think that the majority of posters are sports idiots but we are mostly NT sports idiots that support NT at some level.2 points

Ya, Norm prefaced his very short UNT basketball conversation with something like "I know this probably isn't on anyone's radar." It is becoming clearer and clearer to me that the only people who truly care about UNT sports are it's minimal fan base, it's students (hey, make no mistake, we don't have the stadium without them), and those in the AD, although I am beginning to feel they care more about keeping their jobs than winning. We will find out March 8. I don't think the BOR or the Chancellor give 2 craps about athletics. Oh, they would be happy if we win, but they aren't willing to do anything outside a certain framework to male that happen. We used to at least have basketball to provide some hope, but now that has been taken from the fans as well. Prove me wrong, UNT. Do something about this. Please.2 points

Why can't you understand that it's up to Benford to mesh these guys into a team and keep them from being just a bunch of "random dudes"? I sure hope he's your daddy, because it's pretty obvious to everyone else that he has done nothing but turn a very solid team into nothing.2 points

*DEDICATED TO THE PLAYERS' APOLOGISTS. LINK TO ENTIRE ARTICLE NORTH TEXAS: The Mean Green were supposed to run through the Sun Belt. Instead, North Texas is just 8-16 overall and 3-10 in league play. It hasn't been pretty for rookie coach Tony Benford, who took over for Johnny Jones. • Injuries: Starting point guard Chris Jones is out for the season after playing just 13 games and fellow starter Alzee Williams has also missed time due to injury. However, these guys were struggling even with both of these guys in the lineup. • Tony Mitchell: He disappears too often and doesn't consistently play hard. One coach in the league said that the one-time projected lottery pick's skill set "hasn't improved much and his motor doesn't run." In one loss against FIU, Mitchell was held scoreless in 32 minutes and only took three shots. • Need more skill guys: Benford inherited an athletic group, but there is a lack of skill on the team. "These guys don't have much game,"one league coach said. "It's just random dudes that don't complement one another." • Change in leadership: Going from Jones to Benford has taken time. Jones gave the guys more freedom, and this group is still getting adjusted to Benford's approach.1 point

Great win by the Mean Green! Great hustle, great energy, and great resilience to hold onto the lead with Tony in foul trouble. Also these two stats don't hurt: We won the rebound battle 26-12. We also made 10 more free throws than FIU on 12 more attempts, which shows that we were aggressive. We got them into foul trouble and kept the pressure on. Overall, amazing win by the Mean Green. Also, Smith Sucks!1 point

That's an interesting list. The only one that jumps out at me is Cal State Northrdige, who consistently sucks at everything (I believe they don't even have lights on their baseball field, and they play basketball in what amounts to a high school gym with fold out wood bleachers.) Fullerton has baseball, but is generally mediocre at basketball, and when they had football, were, believe it or not, actually worse than Todd Dodge's teams. In their last season of existence, I saw them lose, badly, at home, to D1-AA Sacramento State. Long Beach has had good years in basketball and baseball, but those seem to be increasingly past tense. But 3 out of 30 certainly makes the case that big schools generally excel at something athletic.1 point

I don’t know how many of you caught this but in Coach Benford’s post game interview tonight he said that (I am paraphrasing here) his goals for the rest of the season are to push the team hard, keep trying, and win a game or two. He may not have meant it the way it sounded but if his goal really is just to win another game or two for the rest of the season he should be fired now. If he didn’t mean it that way, he needs to find a much better way to state his goals for the rest of the year.1 point

Have you ever heard of a league named the NFL? Its this league players play in after they're done playing college football. Even though players are "too old" for college, it is still viewed as the superior league. Sarge was playing on a bad wheel the majority of the season, which explains his down year statistically. He has had offseason surgery and plans on being back to 100% for the fall.1 point
