Norm said it on air on the most listened to radio station in the metroplex. That's how you re-connect with alums, right? If the AD does read this board, here is my messsage: PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!! If you cross your fingers and hope that it will get better next year, you are dooming this program to to at least 5 years of non-competitiveness. And you should be affecting your job status, but we are UNT, so who knows about that. Buy him out. Find a way. This is your mistake. FIX IT!7 points

*DEDICATED TO THE PLAYERS' APOLOGISTS. LINK TO ENTIRE ARTICLE NORTH TEXAS: The Mean Green were supposed to run through the Sun Belt. Instead, North Texas is just 8-16 overall and 3-10 in league play. It hasn't been pretty for rookie coach Tony Benford, who took over for Johnny Jones. • Injuries: Starting point guard Chris Jones is out for the season after playing just 13 games and fellow starter Alzee Williams has also missed time due to injury. However, these guys were struggling even with both of these guys in the lineup. • Tony Mitchell: He disappears too often and doesn't consistently play hard. One coach in the league said that the one-time projected lottery pick's skill set "hasn't improved much and his motor doesn't run." In one loss against FIU, Mitchell was held scoreless in 32 minutes and only took three shots. • Need more skill guys: Benford inherited an athletic group, but there is a lack of skill on the team. "These guys don't have much game,"one league coach said. "It's just random dudes that don't complement one another." • Change in leadership: Going from Jones to Benford has taken time. Jones gave the guys more freedom, and this group is still getting adjusted to Benford's approach.4 points

Are you saying that Sarge is 35? That is incorrect, he is 27, and right at the age for an NFL player in his prime.3 points

He seems to be a good guy and very committed, but if you guys watch any college football outside of UNT games I can't see how you can think that DT is a moderate FBS quarterback. Opposing defenses (in the sun belt nonetheless) wouldn't be able to stack 8-9 in the box and run cover 0 all game long against a moderate starting FBS quarterback. We're definitely going around in circles with this argument, though. Brock has to be better than DT or we will be embarrassed game in and game out with this schedule.3 points

Some telling quotes from other league coaches. The same set of guys that were given freedom last year and took us to the title game, are taken from the freedom into a tighter approach/system that makes them look like "random dudes" out there with "no game" and "lack of skill".3 points

Agree and if not, RV needs to go. I think he has long worn out his usefulness.2 points

Bingo. If this team had taken care of business we would be getting 6-7000 at games right now. The students were just waiting for something to go crazy about, and then the kick to the nuts called Alabama-Huntsville happened.2 points

This may be the worst argument I've seen on this board.2 points

Have you ever heard of a league named the NFL? Its this league players play in after they're done playing college football. Even though players are "too old" for college, it is still viewed as the superior league. Sarge was playing on a bad wheel the majority of the season, which explains his down year statistically. He has had offseason surgery and plans on being back to 100% for the fall.2 points

I'm with 100% of our fans and alums who wish McCarney and staff well in turning this program around. I personally commend the many who continue to hang around during these tough times; when it is easier to sit on the sidelines and/or adopt another team in the region or country. I would like for Mr. McCarney, however, to move on from the constant whining about what he inherited and how bad of shape the program was in. Actually, all of our coaching can play that game. Todd Dodge took over a declining program when Dickey left at a time the other start up Sun Belt schools were getting better. Of course Fouts Field was still a terrible place to recruit to with an improving Sun Belt. (Still perceived as the worst D1 conference in America) In the region, SMU, TCU and Baylor were getting better and advancing their program. What McCarney did inherit was an AD and Administration more committed to football than at any other time in history. With the pledge and support of a growing student body, the check book was opened to pay much higher salaries. A brand new state of the art mid-major stadium (that others previously had only dreamed of) was added. The growing population of Denton County further added to the excitement or potential with the move up to CUSA. ( a perceived better and fan friendly regional conference) With all the momentum and infrastructure in place (inherited by McCarney), this poster's expectations are higher than 5-6 wins. Granted, we had hit rock bottom on the field. Mac, without question, is a great motivational speaker. He excites many, not heard around here since the late Jim Wacker (TCU). Great stuff to hear. This poster would just like more wins against like opponents and more competitive games, (with the occasional upset) against much higher BCS schools. As that great philosopher Al Davis would say "Just Win Baby"2 points

Recruiting profile 40 times are meaningless. 55.2 percent in a pro-style offense isn't the same as 55.2 in a spread. He's not making seven-yard hitch throws 75 percent of the time. He's taking five- and seven-step drops most of the time and making reads. If Trey Haverty was all over him before going to Tech, he's probably a pretty good quarterback.2 points

I hear you and I have two thoughts about that. First, basketball is different in that you're dealing with thirteen vs. eighty-five. My second thought is...how can you possibly screw that up with way above average talent and tons of coaching experience?2 points

One thought that I've had on this issue is that it is doing Benford a disservice to keep him around past this season. If you let him go after a single disastrous season then the situation (from afar) looks as though both parties quickly realized that they weren't a good match for one another and promptly parted ways--each one seeking greener pastures. By contrast, if you REALLY let him drive this bus off the cliff over the course of another season or two, or three, then his reputation will be damaged beyond repair. Despite this season's immense failures, I actually think he could land a high-profile assistant gig for next year. After a few more successful years recruiting and winning as an assistant, who knows? He could even get another shot at being a head coach. However, if he ends up essentially destroying our program for years to come, and if it becomes known that recruits won't go near the guy, then it's possible that he won't ever work for a Division I program again. No one wins by dragging the poor guy through a few more years of humiliation.2 points

Geez, who say anything about what he deserves. Also HC stands for head coach not assistant. I don't think anyone is going to hire Benford as a head coach for a division 1 program if he get fired here. Has absolutely nothing to do with what he deserves and no one is abvocating restricting him in any matter. In fact if you read the whole post, that is kind of pointed out.1 point

If you want to be honest maybe 1200 actual butts in seats. I expect there were a lot more season tickets sold, so paid attendance should be significantly higher. I am not sure who the "we" is in that the "we get what we deserve" line.1 point
-
The attendance was about 3500 in the box score, looked more like 2000-2500 to me. There seems to be fewer an fewer students at games, maybe 500 at WKU. When i was in school (60s) we filled the pit, even with bad teams. One year we won 3 games. The games started at 8:00 then, my friends and i would get there before 7 for a good seat in the lower level. It would fill by 7:15-7:30. They don't come now and they didn't come when Johnny was here. We put 2500 in 10,000 seat arena and there is no excitement. We never filled Fouts, can't fill Apogee. That hurts recruiting in football and BB. We get what we deserve.1 point

He's not an FBS QB. He's a junior in high school. I'm pretty sure 17 yr olds get bigger stronger faster and taller as they age.1 point

I happen to have a little experience with government contracting. One reason the pricing is so high (at least with the feds) is that you have to supply organic fiber optics assembled in the United States by unionized autistic adults working for a company owned by lesbians of minority status. Jumping through those hoops wreaks havoc on overhead.1 point

So it was all rainbows and puppy dogs during the 4 successful years? I just don't believe that.1 point

Woah! Even I can see that he could be given an opportunity to rebuild things as an assistant, and prove to others that he learned what he did wrong. I think he's still pretty young.1 point

Brady Brown has been working out in the team's off-season conditioning program...he's currently ranked 29th out of 97. I'm hoping Brown sticks around...he was pretty well regarded out of high school, he's apparently just had some issues with injuries throughout his career and was never really able to make a mark at Vandy. Between Brown, Terrell and Darnell Smith we may be pretty settled at outside receiver.1 point

Oh, and the UNT basketball commercials advertised this as "the most talented team in UNT history", just in case the apologist want to continue to blame 18-20 year old kids for this disaster.1 point
-
Trust me, I wish I were wrong and hope I am wrong about next year, but you take this team minus an NBA draft pick, add in the fact that the level of competition increases greatly in CUSA, and the probability that Bengord returns and the only reasonable conclusion is a disaster of epic proportions. To those that say UNT can't afford the buyout, I would offer that they cannot afford NOT to buy out this disaster. Leaving him in place tells your fan base that this is the same old UNT that cares more about a year by year bottom line than building successful athletic programs. If that's the case, I really don't see the need to renew season tickets or increase MGC donations. For anybody. We have heard a lot of lip service about an increased commitment to athletics. Well, immediately after this basketball season we will see if these are just words.1 point

We brought in 3 wrs in the last class, 2 of which got hurt before the season even started and had to RS. In this class we have 2 wrs plus a transfer. I wouldn't call that ignoring the situation.1 point

Billy...not a fan of two qb system. I dont have a problem pulling a guy if he is having a really bad day, but only if REAL bad. I personally think you need the continuity. Plus, and you can speak to this directly, cadence is a big thing and two guys will sound different and could have issues with that.1 point

Let's not use a complete idiot as an example in this argument. He said it accidentally fired. He could also have been playing with the trigger in his pocket, causing it to "accidentally" fire. Either way, that guy is a moron of the highest order.1 point
