Trust me, I wish I were wrong and hope I am wrong about next year, but you take this team minus an NBA draft pick, add in the fact that the level of competition increases greatly in CUSA, and the probability that Bengord returns and the only reasonable conclusion is a disaster of epic proportions. To those that say UNT can't afford the buyout, I would offer that they cannot afford NOT to buy out this disaster. Leaving him in place tells your fan base that this is the same old UNT that cares more about a year by year bottom line than building successful athletic programs. If that's the case, I really don't see the need to renew season tickets or increase MGC donations. For anybody. We have heard a lot of lip service about an increased commitment to athletics. Well, immediately after this basketball season we will see if these are just words.7 points

For the life of me I'll never figure out why RV is so against have the interlocked NT on the helmets. That's who we are for crying out loud. Too bad he never listens to his customers.7 points

Thats a lofty goal for a Benford coached team. He's aiming for the moon.6 points

I feel bad for Benford. He was a career assistant, watched other guys get their shot (some succeed, others fail), many younger than he is. I am sure he wondered why he never got that promotion ANYWHERE. He finally gets his shot...a dream situation for a first time coach really....really good returning lineup, average league (so you should be able to make noise), in an area that you visited recruiting at other coaching stops. I am sure he thought he was ready. On paper he was deserving of a head job somewhere. But now he, along with us, is realizing that all those AD's who interviewed and passed him over were no idiots. Benford must be wondering what he got into. That's alright coach - we are wondering the same thing.5 points

From the ad to coaches, my problem is that our athletic dept personnel can change things without earning the right (ie. dodge & white helmets, direction on helmet [North Texas]etc.). So, we change things to help our fans mental state without really changing anything. At least some on this board can ralley at all these nonevents (ie.like the basketball practice facility- how long -10 years-has rv known that our bb teams at times had to practice in the vb gym since they couldn't get a court anywhere on campus and then he waits until the capital campaign comes along & he has to come up with projects (super pit changes etc.)& goals via Lane! (By the way Ken told me about sharing HIS gym with bb kram)4 points

Bag on the defense all you want... if the offense had a quarterback that could hit the broadside of a barn to extend drives and avoid constant 3 & outs maybe they wouldn't have been put in quite as many bad situations. It goes both ways.4 points

We have 8 (!) DL guys coming out of their redshirt year. I have a hard time believing our depth there will not improve and given that fact can't quite see how you came up with the argument that the coaching staff had no clue where it's DLine would stand. Also I do think our D as a whole did not regress last year despite loosing pretty much evey DB and am pretty sure it will be even better this year. D in general has gotten much better since coach Mac has come to Denton. I see much more stagnation (at best) on Offense, and frankly outside of the OL -which is already not the problem- few impact players being brought in. We are betting the house on Berglund... that might work out but seems a risky gamble to me. What is worse: we brought in preciously few good WRs in pretty much any of the classes since Mac came in, so even with a good QB we may be seeing less of an improvement than some seem to predict.4 points

THIS IS COMPLETE CRAP! We lost at home to LaLa before the injuries set in. We lost on a neutral court to a D2 team before the injuries set in. I said at the time CJ got hurt that basketball morons and Benford apologists would use injuries as an excuse. Thanks for proving my point. We win around 8 games if Benford is here next year. Mark it down. 500 at the Pit becomes the norm.4 points

From what I remember, the DL did alright against the run. It's just that the weakness at DB showed because the opponent's playcalling didn't respect the DBs at all, meaning that it also pretty much ignored the DL. I also think that if the secondary improves, then the DL will show more effectiveness at the pass rush since the QB will have to take more time to look downfield and may have to scramble out more when there's no one to pass to.3 points

Oldstudentguy is 114% correct. It's a liability issue. UNT now has something official is can take into discovery, depositions, and court and say, "Look, here is our written policy forbidding this type of behavior. Said Frat ignored it. Grant us summary judgement on our request to be released from the suit, your honor. The proper party for the death/paralysis/maiming of the drunken Frat member is the Frat that didn't obey the rules of the University." And, that...it that. Whether they will or will not drink is the last thing the University is worried about. The first is its own liablity and the ability to transfer risk to insurers based on their risk management program. I can guaran-damn-tee you that one of their insurers' risk control or claims (or, both) people told (er..."suggested") to them that they put such policy in place. "We're serious about underage drinking," said Kelley Reese, a UNT spokeswoman. Baloney. What they are serious about is their insurer chewing their asses out after they reported the incident as a potential claim and discovered they did not have such ban in place already. The first thing they teach you when you go into insurance is: Rule #1 - The goal of the insurance company is to make money. It's not a charity or government agency. They won't sit arond an underwriting or claims office and blow it off, "Oh...just another drunk kid. Gosh, can't do anything about that. May as well not even try." Insurance companies are not politicians giving into every whim of society for the sake of popularity. They are going to make money for their shareholders and guard their financial rating and strength. So, they will not long tolerate risks that don't take risk management seriously. I've seen it firsthand. Also, if UNT lied on every application on the little Yes/No check box question that asks whether or not they have an alcohol ban on campus, and this incident has now occurred, insurance company will cancel them midterm...and, they'll have to report when they try to get a new policy that their last policy was cancelled for lying on the prior application. If that is the scenario, their market will narrow significantly, and the price to procure coverage at all will be much higher. In that case, it could be that they can't get coverage at all. And, when you can get no liability coverage from an insurer, guess what...you are now your own insurer with your own cash and assets on the line for the plaintiffs attorney and 12 "jury of your peers" who present and hear the case of the college student killed/paralyzed/maimed because of the actions of a Frat UNT happily allows to serve alcohol. And, in this world, the last thing any institution scrapping for money wants is its own cash and assets acting as the limit of insurance. It is much preferable to have then insurance company write the settlement and claims checks out than to do it out of your own checkbook.3 points

Know how to stop underage drinking? Lower the drinking age to 18 like it was in the 70s and 80s. Name one other thing where the legal age is 21. You can sign contracts, you can get a home loan, you can get a credit card, you can get married, you can serve in the armed forces, you can die for your country. Are they adults or children when they are over 18 but under 21? Society needs to make up its mind.3 points

It's been growing more obvious with every game since. Benford needs to go. Anyone who can't see that also deserves to be fired.2 points

I don’t know how many of you caught this but in Coach Benford’s post game interview tonight he said that (I am paraphrasing here) his goals for the rest of the season are to push the team hard, keep trying, and win a game or two. He may not have meant it the way it sounded but if his goal really is just to win another game or two for the rest of the season he should be fired now. If he didn’t mean it that way, he needs to find a much better way to state his goals for the rest of the year.2 points

Arguably the top 2 headline names from this "low-ranked" class were Brock Berglund and Dajon Williams. Two facts you hear a lot are that we haven't had an all-conference quarterback since Scott Hall's last season in 2004, and that we haven't had a winning season since 2004. This is not a coincidence and you shouldn't fool yourself to think it is. Quarterback has one of the strongest correlations, there are still exceptions, to team success out of any position in any team sport. I know this might be beating a dead horse, but our quarterback play must improve and can make a huge difference. Whether it's DT or Berglund this year, the success of this team will ride largely on the success of our quarterback play. Looking farther down the road, even if DT comes out and has a good senior year, Coach Mac's job security will be greatly tied to the play of Brock Berglund and Dajon Williams. Finally, I want to ask you guys a question. What do you think about us starting the season with a two-quarterback rotation between DT and Berglund? Mccarney seemed open to the idea in his presser. I would rather not, but like he said, whatever gives us a better chance to win.2 points

We brought in 3 wrs in the last class, 2 of which got hurt before the season even started and had to RS. In this class we have 2 wrs plus a transfer. I wouldn't call that ignoring the situation.2 points

Most of the guys have the size to play D1 ball. Now it's just a matter of seeing if any of the 8 are ready to step up and prove it. I think the fact that we only signed 2 DL in this class speaks to what the staff thinks of these 8......maybe2 points

I didn't think it was possible, but those are even uglier and horrible than these... One more reason I'm glad we got the hell away from Under Armor, besides constant foot injuries caused by terrible cleats.2 points

Awesome uniforms. The interlocking NT is great. I like our current uniforms as well but the helmet decals have to go. Get a descent brand like the interlocking NT and stay with it forevermore. Especially because the future baseball team could use the interlocking NT on their caps to match the football team. They better not write out North Texas on the team's ball caps. That would be awfully silly.2 points

You really think that Benford isn't to blame for taking a talented team and turning that into a team barely above .300? .320 is a fine batting average but its a toilet bowl winning percentage in any sport.2 points

Didn't think a couple of mitchells fouls were fair. But that's the way it goes. None of these 4 guys on the floor right now can be blamed at this point anymore: alzee, tony, Jordan, roger. They are the team. Niko needs some more consistency, pj needs some more range, Clarke needs to find a stroke. Coleman needs to play like he's one of the biggest guys on the court without blatantly shoving people. This season is just being played out now. Holman gave it a go and Patton gave it a go. There isn't much to do unless someone outside of those 4 guys finds some kind of crazy streak in hot springs.2 points

So...got some good stuff going on including a great time at the signing party last night and a lot of excitement along with: - solid returning starters on both sides of the ball - appears to have a good redshirt freshman class - good jucos and transfers All this means GREAT competition in spring which only can help the team. Now....2014 class begins with Junior day 2/23. Be interested to see who we have coming in.2 points

Maybe, but Louisiana Tech last year would prove you wrong. La Tech had the #1 offense in the country and the #124 defense (dead last). There were only five that gave up more points than the Bulldogs. Their record...9-3. It's way too early to tell whether our defense will be improved. On the surface it appears that the backfield will be improved but the linebacking and defensive line could be a little weaker due to the loss of Phillips, Obi, and Cantly. Maybe we can just outscore our opponents. It has worked before.2 points

I am no as distressed at our Rivals ranking as I am perplexed. Can anyone explain to me why so many higher rated athletes are finding such schools as UTSA, Texas State, Louisiana whatever and many others more appealing than UNT? For heaven's sake, we are a century and a quarter old university that has been playing football for almost one hundred years with almost half of those years as a 1-A program. Can this problem be explained logically, empirically? If not, perhaps we need to delve into this phenomenon metaphysically. Are we jinxed? Cursed? Something is wrong, werdly wrong and we can't argue with the law of averages. Weak recruiting classes statistically result in poor results. If we do not approach at least a middle of the pack recruiting rating in the next year or two, we really should take a very serious look at continuing this program.2 points

Maybe because it reads as "TN" instead of "NT"? Maybe it looks like every other interlocked logo half the other colleges in the US use? Also, those uniforms are really, really busy. I like the modern edge but there's way too much going on there.2 points

There is/can be much more to Greek life than chasing a bottle. Thanks to booze, my fraternity is just a memory at North Texas...alcohol abuse destroyed the chapter. The university needs Greek alums, as they turn out to be some of the biggest supporters of the university...hope this does not destroy the university's relationship with the Greeks.2 points

Part of the reason we have had poor QB play is because of poor scheme and poor OL play. In Dickey's last years, Woody Wilson could make plays with his feet and his arm, but Dickey didn't like his freelancing. He wanted a guy to hand off to Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas and run the clock out. His offensive scheme was so poor, that 9 or more in the box was almost what Meager/Wilson/Phillips dealt with durnig his last two years. Then Dodge gets here and his offensive line was just awful. Vizza probably would've been a great QB here, but he took one hell of a beating because the OL was a sieve. Dodge totally ignored linemen, so we were set to get our QB killed. Basically, the same thing happened to Riley Dodge and Nathan Tune, both of whom just took outrageous beatings. Part of that was scheme, but a bigger part was the OL not being very good and Riley, especially, being too small for FBS quarterbacking. Now, since Coach Mac has been here, his OL has become pretty good and the running game has been solid. But, defenses could still load up 9 in the box as the season progressed because Thompson couldn't accurately throw the ball down the field and he wasn't mobile enough to keep the defenses honest. If BB can throw the ball with accuracy, and his mobility can buy him some time, the improvement here should be very telling. Assuming health and eligiility stays the same, the OL and running game should be solid. All we need is for a QB that can throw the ball accurately downfiled to take pressure off the running game.2 points

Bahaha. I saw this list yesterday. Was going to post it, then I had a sports brain aneurysm and couldn't deal with it anymore. We're still getting whipped on the recruiting trail, going on more than a decade. Sure, there are some notable exceptions and stars that fall through the cracks, but those who keep posting how little recruiting rankings mean need to consider how it correlates with our winning percentage over the same time period. In reality, it does matter. And for whatever reason, we're not getting it done.2 points

I just don't see much difference between Mac's classes and Dickey's.In fact,with few exceptions,I don't see any.2 points
