  1. Know how to stop underage drinking? Lower the drinking age to 18 like it was in the 70s and 80s. Name one other thing where the legal age is 21. You can sign contracts, you can get a home loan, you can get a credit card, you can get married, you can serve in the armed forces, you can die for your country. Are they adults or children when they are over 18 but under 21? Society needs to make up its mind.

  3. I had a great time last night at Apogee! Easy to get in the football spirit with the pep band playing. I liked that Mac had the September & January Transfer / Juco enrollees present at the event and each one spoke to the crowd. The question & answer session with the players was interesting. Hard to picture that Shawn McKinney who entered junior college at over 400 lbs was a high school tennis player and during the recruiting process Art Briles came to watch him play in a match. I played high school tennis and would have froze up if a well known D1 football coach came to watch me play. A question from the crowd came in about player's nicknames. Coach Mac likes to give all his players nicknames and when Shawn said his nickname at the JUCO was "SNUGGLES" Mac said he would be hard pressed to call him that! Brock Berglund looked dapper in a sport coat and said all the right things. Seeing 5'9" 218 lb Reggie Pegram up close gives me the opinion that we have our 3rd or 4th and short bulldog RB who will run through people. 6'4" DE Quenton Brown looks very much the part of flying around an OT for a sack or running down an RB on a sweep! James Jones is not short on self confidence & personality and wants the ball in his hands on returns. Mac said that Darius Terrell is now in very good shape and has slimmed down some from playing days at UT. I like seeing his size at WR for us. Good to hear that Zed Evans' brother Eric is walking on the team as an RB. At the very least Zed should be a very good special teams performer for us if not a nickel back too. OT Justin Manu is quieter than many of the others but very much looks the part of being able to protect our QB. Grey shirt Andrew Tucker was also present in the group. I like seeing more recruits coming in from that East Texas football talent hot spot area of Tyler. I am appreciative to the AD for putting on such a great event last night!

  4. Wow...what a great crowd at tonight's event! Best ever! Really great having the players speak and answer questions from the crowd! Lots of personality in that group and lots of talent. Seems to me that this group is ready to get it done and truly believe that they can. Chico said he would be in the press box this year, and was really fired up about being able to open up the offense a bit with this group. Told me to look for some "different" plays on first down this year... Bottom line...really fun event and well done. Got to think everyone who was able to attend was very happy they did.

  5. Funny that all the coaches who have lowly rated recruiting classes aren't a fan of recruiting services, isn't it?

  8. Part of the reason we have had poor QB play is because of poor scheme and poor OL play. In Dickey's last years, Woody Wilson could make plays with his feet and his arm, but Dickey didn't like his freelancing. He wanted a guy to hand off to Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas and run the clock out. His offensive scheme was so poor, that 9 or more in the box was almost what Meager/Wilson/Phillips dealt with durnig his last two years. Then Dodge gets here and his offensive line was just awful. Vizza probably would've been a great QB here, but he took one hell of a beating because the OL was a sieve. Dodge totally ignored linemen, so we were set to get our QB killed. Basically, the same thing happened to Riley Dodge and Nathan Tune, both of whom just took outrageous beatings. Part of that was scheme, but a bigger part was the OL not being very good and Riley, especially, being too small for FBS quarterbacking. Now, since Coach Mac has been here, his OL has become pretty good and the running game has been solid. But, defenses could still load up 9 in the box as the season progressed because Thompson couldn't accurately throw the ball down the field and he wasn't mobile enough to keep the defenses honest. If BB can throw the ball with accuracy, and his mobility can buy him some time, the improvement here should be very telling. Assuming health and eligiility stays the same, the OL and running game should be solid. All we need is for a QB that can throw the ball accurately downfiled to take pressure off the running game.

  10. I am always puzzled by this "star ranking" system...and actually pay it ZERO mind as it is just a guess anyway of how these kids will be as D1 players after HS. D1, as we all know, is soooooooo much different that HS ball. But, this morning I see the DMN has every recruit UNT signed with a Star at one level or another...1 (4 star) 1(3 star) and 21 (2 star). So, I guess if you are into this "star" thing...all UNT signees are "stars"! Go Mean green! One guy got up and pledged to double his Mean green Club donation level if UNT beats UTEP! Greatness.....Mac wondered if I was running a dating service with my question to Shawn McKinney..."Snuggles" with reference to tennis....had a great time and am still way impressed with the crowd. BEST ever! All the players in attendance seemed to having a really good time...and, I forgot to mention...Coach Mac was not wearing sunglasses!

  19. Punish all for the mistakes of a few. Way to administrate, administrators. You will probably win an administration award for administering so administratively awesome. Just another boneheaded decision by UNT. Its beginning to become what I expect.

  20. Well that's cool, because there's a 0.01% of UNT ever getting these jerseys. Ours are fine, maybe a flywire collar, and they're good. I like the green.

  21. So the penalty for violating the ban is what? Kicking the fraternity off of campus? Might as well disband them all now and save everyone a very painful few years. Wiping out the greeks would be a monumental mistake for UNT.

  22. I didn't realize they were supporting the team. Seems like the tailgating continued while the games were being played.

  23. That game against Arkansas in 1968 .. we had what looked like a touchdown Ramsey to Shanklin called back because official says Shanklin trapped a low pass. My seat was low and I didn't see the ball hit the ground, but we were not going to get that call against a team in the hunt for a national championship that year. Still think the 66-67-68 teams were our best ever, with wins against quality opponents.

  28. Uhhh, isn't that pretty much the definition of a loyal North Texas fan? My wife has a running joke with me during football season these days. As I am getting ready to leave for a home (or away) game, she just smiles sweetly at me and says "sweetie, wouldn't it just be a lot easier If I beat you with barbed wire.....it couldn't possibly hurt any more, and it would be over with a lot sooner"....sometimes it's a temptation. ..........

  29. "The problem runs much deeper but maybe more so with a day in and day out athletic administrative modus operendi and philosophy that has yet to turn North Texas into an annual juggernaut of a Top 25 ranked winner." Juggernaut??? I'd be somewhat pleased if we could just improve to mediocrity!

  32. We are finally back up to 85 scholarships. That frees McCarney up to take a few jucos/transfers. If he signs about 19 or 20 HS and 4 or 5 jucos/transfers on average each year, it works out scholarship wise without creating major problems. Sign a bunch of jucos each year (Dodge took 10 in 2010 & 7 in 2009) and problems will be created for some other coach to figure out.

  33. Brock was technically a transfer, and transfers are not counted by recruiting services as part of any class. He really needs to be the real deal for us to get out of college football hell. If he is the real deal, Chico needs to be allowed to run whatever offense best fits Berglund's skills in order for us to get out of college football hell.

  34. That's fine, but when it comes down to brass tacks, he counts towards this class. That's just the way it is. And Darius Terrell is the 4*.

  35. I'm counting him as 2012 transfer... Reason being, he was with the team in the Fall, he was on the side line in a jersey during game days..

  36. So basically, this is not a real throwback uniform, just a combination of several past uniforms. This is so typical of us. Maybe we should add some leather helmets to commemorate Theron Fouts

  37. Considering that the team store is packed at every home game, you may want to give the fans another option besides a year old Derek Thompson jersey and a 2 year old Lance Dunbar jersey. But, since apparently the AD and bookstore can't seem to communicate, and the bookstore does all the purchasing for the store, I doubt that the throwback option will be there for fans on opening day. I mean, it took them 2 years to offer a Mitchell jersey from the time he stepped on campus, and then only did so after A LOT of bitching from certain fans. Track record speaks volumes, so my expectations are that nothing will be offered to fans. I won't even go into the quality issues of what is offered.

  38. Bahaha. I saw this list yesterday. Was going to post it, then I had a sports brain aneurysm and couldn't deal with it anymore. We're still getting whipped on the recruiting trail, going on more than a decade. Sure, there are some notable exceptions and stars that fall through the cracks, but those who keep posting how little recruiting rankings mean need to consider how it correlates with our winning percentage over the same time period. In reality, it does matter. And for whatever reason, we're not getting it done.

  44. Sadly I'd consider it a huge win if we even got an ill-designed t-shirt to commemorate the flying worm. I'd love a high quality, vintage looking shirt. Instead I envision some cheap, baggy, 2nd rate Gildian t-shirt that will also have our current branding mixed in. Prove me wrong AD/marketing.

  47. The transfers in this class appear to me to be much stronger than the HS signees. Judging by their looks on the NT web-cast, they have size and hopefully the skill to give NT a boost. Major program transfers are never a sure thing but I like the look of the four NT signed. Most of the time these transfers are players that can't get much playing time were they transferred from and that description fits some of NT's, but there are other factors at play in this class. Berglund to me is more like a freshman than a transfer, he has never really had the opportunity to play anywhere. He is close to a highly recruited hs player. Pegram, I believe would have been competing for the starting job if he had stayed a Purdue. Terrell is the most typical type of transfer, he felt he was not getting the opportunity at UT but the position change to WR make him a little different. Evans with one year to play, is unique and I think he will definitely help NT on special teams. On the Juco front; this is one of the better looking groups that NT has signed. Jones and Manu were fairly heavily recruited. Brown could be the rush de that NT needs. Loving is a blocking te and will be used. Mckinney looks like a project, but I think the coaching staff thinks he may be very good if he can continue to drop some weight. One of the big problems that NT has had with jucos is getting ones that can qualify academically and stay that way. I think and hope that McCarney may be much better than Dickey and Dodge doing that.
