Wow, extremely classy. Are these guys among the miscreant crew who supposedly are dragging our season down?8 points

Optimism is a mans best friend, so here we go. Lets talk about next years offensive line which I think will be one of the best in CUSA and the best UNT has ever had. LT A. Johnson 6-6 315 LG C. Lemon 6-3 320 C M. Y'Barbo 6-2 310 RG L. Anyiam 6-4 300 RT J. Manu 6-5 290 TE C. Loving 6-4 265 That's some serious beef and athletes at all positions. With a solid offensive line and a stable of good RB's I think we will control the line of scrimmage and time of possession. Now all we need is to develop some speed on the outside in addition to Chancellor. This offense has potential to be very, very good next year. What are your thoughts on the O-Line this year??4 points

Alexis Hyder had her best week of the season notching her fifth career double-double and career-highs in points and rebounds to lead North Texas to an undefeated week. In snapping the Arkansas State seven-game winning streak, Hyder poured in a career-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting and had nine rebounds. In the win over Louisiana-Lafayette, Hyder scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. The 16 rebounds by Hyder were the most by a North Texas freshman since the 2005 season. For the week she averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds. http://www.sunbeltsports.org/Sports/WomensSports/WBasketball/Article/tabid/736/Article/19535/Title/womens-basketball-news-notes-week-14.aspx4 points

Stradford was pretty good his first year--at least he took enough attention to give other slower receivers the opportunity to get open. I wouldn't call Trice a bust.4 points

Dear UNTLifer, Could we start with winning recruiting battles against ULM, Tulane, UTSA, Ark State, or how about simply not winning battles where no other coach saw fit to even enter in the competition? Is that too much to ask? I know it doesn't serve your hard on with combatting (lamely) my every post...but let's start at the bottom of the barrel (since that's where we all seem to think SBC schools are), and let's outrecruit them with our better facilities, better budget, better conference and supposed better coaches. Or I guess we could go back to championing the fact that these kids were all district in 1 or 2A...yet nobody else could see their inner magic quite like we could. Or, let's trot out the names of a handful of players who "beat the odds" at North Texas...and are either from teams at least a decade ago, or are from teams that haven't seen the upper side of .500 in eight seasons and counting. That has worked ever so well for a while...hey, we do have traditions! Or, let's talk about how ratings services are inherently biased and meaningless. So meaningless that we get upset when kids lose "stars" when they commit to us. So meaningless that the VERY few teams who have taken lowly regarded kids and broken through (Boise State) are now looked upon as a massive success story to the point that everyone wants to be the "next Boise State". But let's ignore that Boise didnt really build their way to the BCS by taking on kids who fell through the cracks...let's not let facts ruin a good fairy tale. Oh, and let's ignore the BLATANT hypocrisy we will show should one of our recruits get that magical third star, because then we'll trumpet it on every message board where anyone dares to question our awesome "potential". Now, where did I leave that post where I foretold how each and every season around here has gone and will go. Are we to the "holy geez, did you see our players lift weights on a youtube video" stage yet? That will keep this place buzzing until at least spring ball.4 points

Don't know why you guys are making a big deal out of this. I was informed a long time ago that highly rated players are not important. It's better to have players no other big schools offer because sometimes they turn out good. Mac is doing just fine.4 points

North Texas softball opens its season in Austin this weekend, playing Memphis and UT on Friday and TAMU-Corpus Christi on Saturday. The UT game is scheduled at 6:00 pm Friday and will be shown on the Longhorn Network. Great chance for NT to get some statewide exposure. Let's win all three, ladies. GMG3 points

Considering I don't see where we've lost anyone to ULM, UTSA or Arkansas State, I'm not sure your first sentence holds water. I'll give you Tulane, but when we are losing kids that are local to Tulane, I just don't see what we should be getting worked up about. Then again, I'm sure you are privy to recruiting information that nobody else is. Considering that Rivals has yet to list our QB commit Williams even though he has been committed for months tells me all I need to know about recruiting services. That, and the fact that they do upgrade and downgrade the ratings of these young men depending on where they end up discredits their service, at least in my eyes. I don't get upset, but I thought it deserved an explaination, which was pretty weak on their part, and it explains another reason why I don't put too much stock in their service. I sent the email to see if they could explain how this occurs, which was far from a demand. Their reply told me all I needed to know and confirmed what I already thought, at least of Rivals. I could list numerous players the "recruiting services" were wrong about, but you can take the few I listed and call it "trot out the names of a handful of players who "beat the odds" at North Texas and make your typical condescending comments to suit your post. I don't, as you probably wish, have a "hard on with combatting (lamely) your every post, but I grow tired of the condescending nature of your replies to everyone. I'll just do as others that have commented on your constant negativety and stop replying to your comments. I guess the fact that a select few, UNT90's post above for instance, constantly bash every little thing our AD and University do, or their actions don't meet with your approval has grown old. The truth of the matter is that none of us know what goes on behind the scenes. And to top that off by criticizing the coaching staff over who is committing to us, which is indirectly criticizing the 18 year olds that are excited about this committment, is beyond me. All I have ever stated is to give these kids a chance. I listed the players above to make the point that you all would have criticized their signings at the time based upon your comments today.3 points

A couple of different situations. Recruits that didn't commit and go elsewhere, fine. Players who commit and then renege, it is a different story. I don't wish them ill at all, but at the same time there will be no best wishes coming from here. I just don't understand I will commit till I get an offer I like better, what in the hell is that good for. I think NT has lost the moral high ground with some of the actions of the MBB coach, but in general a commitment should mean something on both sides of the agreement.3 points

No we shouldn't beat those schools listed, but when Texas State is blowing you out in recruiting and you are having trouble recruiting to the DFW area against schools in Arkansas and Louisiana that aren't in the SEC, it's beyond maddening to try and understand why we can't recruit here, no matter who the coach is, the conference we play in, or even more disappointing, the stadium we play2 points

I'm less concerned with blaming a kid who is trying to make a monumental decision and more concerned with the fact that we have been getting obliterated in recruiting for years. We are one of only three sun belt teams with no rivals three star recruits. Even south Alabama has two. The stadium and move to cusa don't seem to be helping one bit.2 points

Isn't it Brett's job to report stuff? So, he was just doing his job, right? Could he have held the news until after signing day? Who knows. I know this about human nature, though: Treat someone well and they'll be inclined to help you when they can. Dickey got along well with Brett. Dodge tried to treat him like the high school journalism kid. McCarney? Hard to tell. I know not all coaches like the press. But, in the scheme of things, the heat isn't turned up very high at North Texas. In fact, I'd say it's pretty permanently set on warm/lo. Win and treat people well. Until that happens, no one should be complaining about whatever tiny bit of press coverage UNT gets. If it weren't for Brett and the DRC, there would be virtually none.2 points

So, last year our bakery used only the finest walnuts. However, that particular brand of walnuts is no longer available. Instead of ordering a five year supply of a different brand of walnuts, our head baker accidentally ordered a five year supply of motor oil. Now that all the regulars of our bakery have been vomiting and vowing never to return, we have realized that motor oil is not now nor will ever be an acceptable substitute for walnuts. Regardless, we are stuck using motor oil for years to come even though we all know it is poisonous. Apparently, we are one of the poorest bakeries in our city and we spent every last cent we could scrounge up on the motor oil. Now the chocolate chip and flour distributors will also likely stop servicing our bakery because they don't want to be associated with the sickness and health code violations resulting from our cookies. I guess we just have to give up on cookies for the next decade or more until we run out of motor oil and the public forgets about how dangerous and disgusting our products have become. To keep our bakery in business, we really need to hope that our bread starts to improve. It hasn't sold well since 2004! That sad part is that prior to the motor oil incident our cookies were often finalists in our annual neighborhood baking contest.2 points

Maybe, but TCU did it on the regular before they got an invite. UH does alright, too. There's no "woe is UNT" anymore. Our suckage is largely/entirely our own doing.1 point

I stand to be corrected, but I think UH and TTech have reached Tier 1 and North Texas meets all criteria except our endowment coffers needs millions more. At one time, it was just UH, TTech and the UNT systems who were the next group up for Tier 1 status, but now I think many more institutions have been added to those 3 and are now seeking Tier 1. GMG! when the whole NRUF (National Research University Fund) concept started "tier 1" was a university that was a member of the AAU California had 9, New York had 7 (6 now with Syracuse withdrawing) and on and on Texas has 3 UT, TAMU, and Rice so that was the definition The state of Texas was and is using for "tier 1"......so Texas cannot designate any university as "tier 1" because of course Texas does not control the AAU the goals of the NRUF and TRIP (Texas Reseach Incentive Program) is for universities to earn matching funds for donations private that go towards specific kinds of research and academics and meet particular dollar amounts for various levels of matching (the TRIP portion) and for schools to meet a first criteria of 45 million in restricted research as well as meeting 4 out of 6 other criteria (all for a period of two years in a row) to qualify for a payout from the NRUF endowment the idea was that with increased funding and larger endowments eventually those schools would be able to meet the kinds of metrics that AAU schools have if not actually gain membership to the AAU (extremely hard to do) origonallly 7 schools were elegible for TRIP matching funds and to attempt to meet the metrics needed to gain NRUF funding those were Texas Tech, UH, UTSA, UTA, UTD, UTEP, and north Texas......they were the emerging research schools in Texas and to be an emerging research school in Texas you need to offer at least 10 dctorial programs, graduate at least 20 doctoral students a year, have at least 150 total doctoral candidates, and 14 million in research on Jan 12 2012 TxState became the 8th emerging research university in Texas and as such is now eligible for TRIP matching funds and for eventual NRUF participation this is for INDIVIDUAL UNIVERSITIES.....it has NEVER been something for systems also there was NEVER a time when only three schools were "designated" (or any other term) to be anointed the next "tier 1" school.....it has always been at least 7 universities (those listed above) that were in the emerging research category as classified by The State of Texas and the metrics have always been the same and the schools had to meet or exceed those metrics for two years running.....if you do not meet or exceed those metrics you do not participate in the NRUF period and that is for individual universities not systems by the definition that The State of Texas used when first discussing numbers of "tier 1" schools in Texas UH and Texas Tech are not "tier 1" because they are not AAU members.....UH has made a false claim of being "ranked" "tier 1" by the Carnegie Foundation.....except there is just one problem with that claim the Carnegis Foundation specifically does not use the term "tier 1", they specifically do not rank universities (they classify them based on similar metrics which they CLEARLY state in no way implies similarity of quality of education), and they specifically state their classifications are not to be used as rankings or comparisons of quality of programs or universities.....so the Carnegie Foundation never ranked UH anything much less "tier 1" both Texas Tech and UH are ranked "tier 1" by the US Snooze the only rankings listing that udes that term, but that is still not what The state of texas was using or meaning when they ever stupidly and erroneously used that same term.....it was always about AAU membership as of now Texas Tech and UH are the two universities in Texas that have qualified for NRUF funding from the NRUF endowment.....but that does not make them "tier 1" based on the AAU membership metric that The State of Texas first used when they looked at the number of "tier 1" universities in other states VS Texas the first metric that must be met for NRUF funding is 45 million in RESTRICTED research and after that 4 of 6 other criteria mst be met...as of the last report UTD will be the next university in Texas to qualify for NRUF funding and after that it will probably be UTA....there is a slim chance that UTD will qualify in 2014 they have met the restricted research criteria of 45 million at this point and as of the 2012 report they had met 3 of the needed 4 out of other 6 critiria, but I don't think they will meet the needed 4 critiria in 2012 and they possibly will in 2013, but for 2014 that would not be two years running the soonest UTA would be able to qualify would probably be 2016.....they are a little ways away on the restricted research and they met two out of the 6 critiera.....UTEP is further along on restricted research and will probably be at 45 million in restricted research for 2013, but they only met 1 out of the 6 other criteria and are a ways away from meeting any of the others UTSA is at the same level of restricted research as UTA, but they met none of the 6 other criteria although they now meet one of them which is membership in Phi Kappa Phi......the same single critiria out of the 6 that north Texas, and UTEP met and UTSA is a ways away from meeting any of the others TxState if they had been included in the report may have met a single criteria for freshman class metrics and I am sure they will soon be a member of PKP as well or will be as soon as then need to be, but they would be a ways away on any of the other criteria for 2010 -> 2012 here are the restricted research numbers Texas Tech $50,071,546 $50,205,458 $46,106,813 UH $56,564,687 $53,100,109 $51,663,426 UTD $40,906,393 $43,659,514 $45,573,771 UTEP $37,813,868 $40,179,653 $43,156,720 UTA $32,288,186 $29,869,344 $32,284,249 UTSA $28,084,442 $30,429,992 $32,356,827 TxState $17,778,634 $19,078,112 $21,761,575 north Texas $13,293,480 $14,476,509 $16,557,183 the above numbers are for RESTRICTED research which is the metric needed for NRUF funding and it needs to be at 45 million for 2 years running before anything else matters as of 2012 for the other criteria (six of them with 4 needed for 2 years running) Texas Tech and UH had 4 out of 6 and qualified for NRUF funding UTD had 3 out of 6 UTA had 2 out of 6 north Texas and UTEP had 1 out of 6 at the time of the report UTSA had 0 out of 6, but is now a member of PKP so they have 1 out of 6 TxState was not in the report, but may have met the freshman class metric if they had been in the report and they also could easily become members of PKP just as UTSA did shortly after the report in the strategic plan for research 2012-2020 north Texas had a goal of being at 45 million in restricted research by 2015 and the "goal" for 2011 was 18 million so north Texas is well off that goal even a year later and 2015 will probably be out for gettign to 45 million as will 2017 so probably 2019 at the soonest to meet the needed 45 million for restricted research much less 4 of the other 6 needed criteria for 2 years running for 2010-2011 there was 50 million in available TRIP matching funds the allocation of those mmatching funds for those two years was Texas Tech 21,161,251.99 UTD 15,112,640.19 UH 4,543,896.75 UTEP 2,950,000 UTSA 2,787,500 north Texas 1,677,940.48 UTA 550,000 TxState was not eligible at that time the 2012 numbers are not in yet, but 50 million for 2012-2013 was available again and there is a chance it will be 75 million for 2014-2015 the NRUF payout to UH and Texas Tech was about 9.5 million each per year for 2012-20131 point

Hilarious. Sad part is this is the actual reality of the situation once you decipher all the metaphors here. So, if you are an AD in charge of hiring the baker, and there was a chance that your baker could make motor oil cookies for the next 5 years, you would think long and hard about (prudent) overspending on a decent, proven baker right? Especially given the fact that: 1.) You already under-spent hired a high school cafeteria expert to work at your 5-star hotel and he gave food poisoning to 4 out of 10 customers for the 3-4 years of his tenure. That guy burned your hotel bad for years to come. 2.) You ALSO already under-spent on your pastries chef who managed to think that melamine was a terrific additive to replace the cumbersome food coloring that needed to be added to the pastries. This lady had to be let go, based on your choice as well. Maybe the hiring manager is the problem here?1 point

Not good news this close to signing day. One wonders why it came this close...hopefully, Coach Gaines got a job he thinks is bigger, better, etc. Just wish the announcement could have been held until after signing day. But, if the only reason the kid was coming to UNT was because of who recruited him, then not sure he was that solid a "yes" anyway. Sure hate to lose the kid to TCU.....double darn. But 18 year old kids have a way of doing interesting things....so until signing day is done and names are signed on dotted lines, I just will hold my breath and hope the kid "see the errors of his ways" here and comes home to UNT! He may well see the pine for a good while at TCU where he would have seen earlier playing time at UNT perhaps...then there's that "potential" thing...seen a lot of "potential" go to waste on lots of football teams from HS to the pros. As the great philosopher says..."you never know until you know?.1 point

The 2x4's could also assist those with shoulder issues. The deeper you go on a bench press, the more strain it puts on the shoulder joint.1 point
-
the 2x4's help the athletes work on locking out heavier weight on the bench press focusing mainly on the triceps. if you moved those 2x4's with the weight they are using they should not be able to bench press it unassisted. Just trains the muscles to handle heavier weight. Kind of the same idea with the chains and bands. Make it lighter in the places you normally get stuck and harder to lock it out.1 point

One would think Gaines could have used his brain and waited a couple days....unless this is some sort of serious personal matter...in which case officially resigning probably would not have been a priority anyway though. Really funny how nothing ever goes right for us...oh wait, we did steal that one recruit from TSSM.1 point
