  1. With the exception of Roger Franklin, I think this is the most uninspired team we have fielded in years...I think that Tony, being young, has let the malaise of the team affect him and his performance.

  2. I am from Whitesboro & John is one of my best friends along w/ gill and woods' older bro... He came here to be closer to home & wants to play... He is not 6'5 lol he is 6'0 .. He has always liked North Texas & I'll tell y'all right now he can play.. His senior yr he absolutely dominated people.. Under recruited, could have gone to army or Air force but elected to prefer as a walk on w ok st.. Good speed for size & most likely can play special teams from day one.. Now about Kilcrease, if this kid does not pull a UNT offer we are dumb.. Most talented player ever at UNT except for the notorious Labhart brothers.. Unreal track star & can flat out play both sides of the ball.. Every time in home I talk to his father about how recruiting is going and he has nothing but great things to say about UNT.. Collin loves the school and I really hope he gets more looks.. PS family hated their trip to SMUt so that made me very happy...

  3. Since the Danny Kaspar thread is locked, I comment here. Somehow, someway, Benford has to go. Many, like me, thought he was a good hire. Came from a well respected program, good recruiter, etc., etc. Remember this, Trilli was good recruiter too. At ut and at UNT. Slight problem, he couldn't coach! History is repeating itself.

  4. The game is on the MG premium internet. So far, the quality of these transmissions has been horrible, sound out of sync with the pic, loud humm on another, hurky- jerky motion. I won't be getting it next year.

  5. haven't been here for awhile but thought I'd check in since you're our next game. I'm fully aware of the ulala game and also know those results have no impact on how our game will turn out. I can see your board is angst-filled much like ours was during the tenure of McDummy. Most of our fans understand it'll take a couple years to un-do the damage but we still have some harper-haters that squeal with delight over every misstep. I wouldn't wish what you're going through or what we went through on anyone. Hold that.....I would certainly wish it on Middle. But they kinda had mediocrity on hold kermit 's first 9 years.

  6. I totally agree with your post. The only thing that I would add is that for us to appear that we have a legitimate athletic department, Coach Benford must be fired. There is not one power conference school in the nation and very few mid major schools that would tolerate a season like this one. I would imagine that a lot of schools would have already fired him. If we do not fire Coach Benford, this non-action will feed into the stereotype that a lot of people have concerning the athletic department in which we are not fully committed to athletics and that failure (even historic failure) is accepted. The athletic department needs to send the message out and show that the University of North Texas has the same standards as every successful athletic program in the nation.

  7. We've managed to erase 11 seasons of progress in less than 3 months. Think about that everyone. Last night's loss was the worst Sun Belt conference defeat we've had since JJ's second year, and more akin to the sorts of beatdowns we had under Trilli. All that with one of the most talented rosters in school history. Benford has to go -- or RV does.

  8. Drex, I agree with most of your post. However, had Tony not had to sit out, he would be midway through his junior season here, at another university, or even in the NBA by now. I agree it is hard to not get touches, and have 3 bodies on you when you do. But nobody should come close to him on the defensive end in our conference. So, how long is he going to be "young"? He should be mature enough (and hungry) by now to step it up, especially with a "millions of dollars future" at stake. He has shown he can turn it on, but can also turn it off at will.

  9. A couple of thoughts: NT could have fought the downgrade to 1aa but did not even try as far as I know. In fact, I think the Administration at the time was for more interested in saving money than protecting athletics. SMU finds themselves in the exact situation as NT, they joined a conference as a big step up and it immediately eroded to something less. They are still much better off than if they stayed in CUSA but won't get the lift they envisioned. The weakened BE is still much better than CUSA.

  10. I don't put a lot of concern into stars. Ryan Aplin was a 2 star recruit. DeMario Davis taken in the 3rd round by the Jets was a 2 star recruit. MD Jennings who earned his 15 minutes of fame when his interception for Green Bay against the Seahawks was ruled a Seahawks TD by the replacement refs was ZERO stars. Two star JD McKissic had over 1,000 yards receiving and was GoDaddy.com Bowl offensive player of the game and named AP Freshman All-American.

  15. OK, fair enough...but you don't just flounder at that level for more than a decade and lose generations of fans because it cost too much. I think we all can agree that the intrinsic cost of staying at 1-aa for so long has cost waaaaayyyyy more than it would've to put those extra bleachers on Fouts (or heaven forbid, actually fund a new stadium that was appropriate for a university in Texas of our size) and put forward a campaign to get attendance back up to a place to be 1-a again. What happened in 1994, at the very least, should've happened in 1984. Never should we have played that long in the SLC. Absolute joke that haunts us still today in so many fans and media members eyes.

  16. The disater that Benford has orchestrated in basketball will put even more pressure to win on the football program this fall. People are sick and freaking tired of losing.

  18. It's been 82 days since the UAH game. Now the biggest goal is to avoid another blowout to another (much better than ULL) Sunbelt team. The onlly one that beat MTSU this season. I wish I could say I thought we had a chance.

  21. Coming in at number 21... Tony Mithell Mitchell had one of his best games of the season last Saturday against Florida Atlantic (24 points, 8 rebounds) before dropping in two more uninspired showings -- a 10-point, 7-turnover performance in a loss against Middle Tennessee followed by a 3-for-9 shooting night against Arkansas-Little Rock. Scouts aren't sure what to do with him at this point. Everyone believes he has NBA talent, but there are legitimate questions about how much he really wants to do anything with it. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2013/story/_/id/8894753/2013-nba-draft-ben-mclemore-rising-list-top-30-nba-prospects

  23. NEW Player Announcement: Folks...it's good odds that you might see ex-teammates Jason Attaway (QB #18) tossing the ball to Brian Futrell (WR #88) should you play watch or volunteer to help this year in GMG.Com Bowl X. In addition...it's possible that current AF pilot Attaway may just have a special "something" to add to our silent auction this year....I am happy to be able to announce the addition of two participants...UNT's own.... BRIAN FUTRELL and JASON ATTAWAY! Thanks for supporting this event and our great student-athletes!

  24. Easy win... Yeah this gonna be ugly. Only hope is that getting blown out lights some miracle rocket fuel under the coaches, players, and waterboys butts. But we are just too outmanned and outcoached right now. I'll be conservative and say we lose 74-60. GMG!

  27. 1. How much would it have cost to have filed an injunction against the NCAA enjoining them from downgrading the football program to 1-AA. We could have claimed that the new rules were discriminatory and arbitrary. We could have sited many schools that benefited from conference affiliation which we had been denied. We could have delayed the hearing for years until such time as we got some big monied alums to come up with the funds to either build a new stadium, Or we could have delayed them long enough to move all our home games to Texas Stadium to get our numbers up. We could have then dropped the suit. 2. When I was a participant in the focus group that the athletic department sponsored in late 1990, one of the questions that Dr. Lane asked the group was "If North Texas started playing division 1 football again, would all of you pay higher ticket prices to attend the games?". Now, If (as some of you on this board seem to be implying) there has been a significant number of North Texas alumni who would come forward and financially support a D-1 program if only the administration would get on board, then why was that focus group asked such a question? Because if monied alumni have been contacting the administration, for years or even decades, about their desire to help take North Texas to the next level, then Dr. Lane should have already known the answer to the question.

  28. Many or most of us around when Fry was here, still hold him in the highest regard and proudly count him as one of our own. If Jones has close to the success that Fry had after he left NT, he will be thought of the same way.

  29. No he's not. Pastor Jones is too busy with his inner-city ministry to worry about us.

  32. I saw Collin Kilcrease play last year. Tall and very fast. I saw the Pilot Point game. He scored 3 rushing TDs and had a long TD fumble recovery as a DB. He also had a very long punt as their punter. Could be a RB, DB, or WR and a return guy. If he gets a gap in the open field, he's gone.

  36. I don't see this being all the meaningful. Considering we had DT at quarterback and a only maybe two receivers that we could count on ... I'm surprised that we threw more than we ran on all other downs.

  37. JJ is just not a good coach. At best, he'll win 20 games and then turn it on in the SEC tournament. That's clearly not preferable to where we are right now.

  40. I also do not typically have the stomach for calling out specific parties and declaring that so and so should be fired. Furthermore, I tend to remain optimistic about Mean Green athletics even when times are lean. For example, in 2009 I truly believed our 2-6 football team, which had just scored 68 in a win against Western Kentucky and lost a number of close games, had a shot to win four in a row and go to a bowl game. In reality, we were blown out at home by Louisiana-Monroe in the very next game (the other three were also losses). Reflecting back, I feel silly because it’s obvious that we were a horrible team in the midst of a historically bad stretch of seasons. At the time, however, I found false optimism by believing that it mattered that three of our early season losses were by a combined 9 points. “See, we’re a lot better than we were in 2008, and 2007, and 2006, and 2005!” No, we weren’t. And, as we all know, we’re still trying desperately to dig out of that hole. I don’t want the same 8-(or more) year-long curse to engulf our basketball program. We have a team loaded with the type of talent that many coaches NEVER enjoy in their entire careers. The result: we have failed to a degree that defies description. I honestly can’t think of any examples of a team in any sport falling this far below expectations. Sure, we may not really have been a prospective top 25 team, but shouldn’t we perhaps be top 50-100? The reality of the situation is that we are one of the worst teams in the nation. Again, I don’t feel good about calling out individuals, but this head coach has proven himself, for whatever reason, to be completely incapable of leading this team. I genuinely feel that for each additional day he has with our players, our program is being set back further. For that reason, I think an immediate action is required. While it may seem absurdly reactionary to not even afford him the opportunity to finish his first year, his has been an unprecedented failure. At this point, I don’t even think it’s fair to Benford to make him ride this out to its dismal conclusion. I’m about to cancel my Mean Green Premium subscription because it just isn’t fun watching us be humiliated on a regular basis. Even with an NBA-destined phenom, the joy of watching Mean Green basketball has been beaten out of me. Win or lose, I’ll always support my Mean Green teams, and I’ll probably still listen to the games on the radio (at least until we start getting blown out), but I no longer see any purpose in watching this hopeful season go down pathetically in flames. I don’t blame anyone in the Athletic Department for this hire; Benford looked OK on paper. He wasn’t my first choice, but I thought he was a solid candidate, and I can see why the decision was made. I will, however, begin to question the direction of our athletic program as a whole if we either will not or cannot make an immediate change. If, as some have suggested, we are simply too poor to afford a buyout even if we know that our inaction will produce historically bad seasons for years to come (with numerous and perhaps irreparable long-term consequences), then we should probably cease to exist as an NCAA Division I member institution. I tend to think that the revenue can be found, if we want to find it badly enough.

  41. Very interesting; great work by Mr. Tepper. That certainly validated the run on first; throw on second; throw on third and 3 yards to go or more theory. I would bet the breakdown stays about the same with the run vs. pass this year; but factoring in Berglund runs and completions on routine throws and that will hopefully make a huge difference in offensive output.

  42. I think most know me as a rather rational person, who is never onboard with firing coaches early. I WASN'T EVEN OPPOSED TO DODGE'S FOURTH SEASON WHEN I HEARD HE WAS COMING BACK. If you've lost me, you've lost MG Nation. I might have this as a running Walter Croonkite Iranian hostage style meme until Benford is fired. And that's the way it is.

  43. From the article: “I remember emotions ran rather high on those rejections,” Hutcheson said. “I know at one time a number of people cut up credit cards from stores in Dallas because they felt the SMU people had not been backing Tech’s effort. They tried to apply economic influence, and sometimes economics does exert pressure.” SMU was a jerk even then. Life is/was all about them... Interesting the the SWC went from 1922 until 1956 (1960 was first TTU football year) with no additions. $ure doesn't happen in today's world... .
