  1. He'll still get drafted in the NBA. I bet scouts are more perplexed at our waste to use him than down on his upside.

  2. He's a serious football fan just like most of us. He is at every game and I don't see how anyone who attended at least every home game last year could be a fond of Thompson's play. Maybe he shouldn't have said what he said, but I'd rather have him speak his mind than lie about what he thinks. As for Connor, he was a steal and has performed very well for us thus far. He couldn't care less whether a few Thompson fans on this board have a target out for him.

  5. Remember that tournament where he graded out as the 2nd most efficient player in the entire field? Those crappy players and coaches got nothing on Benford and the Belt.

  6. You know I was not talking about any player. You want a leader on tjhe floor? What do you call Roger Franklin - he's been our emotional leader the last two seasons. I want a leader on the bench.

  8. Come on, now. We all know Tony was mature in the Lebron camp, where he was just about the consensus best player, but that doesn't mean he would be mature a mere 3 months later, dude. You know, some kids get less mature in 3 months and then magically mature the next year. It's a medical condition. Think it's called Benforditis.

  13. I've become a pretty big fan of the North Texas Football Performance workout charting during the off-season (via Facebook)...was thumbing through today's and came across a couple interesting tid-bits. First...JaMarcus Jarvis is now listed as a safety. I think with the likes of Jimmerson, Pegram, Byrd and Lewis in front of him, this seems like a logical move. Also the last RB to DB switch went off pretty well last season... Second...a few new names...can't confirm these links are for the right players, but given all four are from Texas it seems I made some sound assumptions TE. 14. Which game? Been to all the home games (have you?)...watched others on TV and/or internet. As I recall...lots of folks have opinions about this without ever attending a game...home or away. Seems to not matter to them...why do you ask?

  15. This is such an empty stat. We have no idea what the circumstances were when these people were killed by a gun (or what kind of gun). Was the gun registered or was it acquired illegally? Was the gun something like a hand gun or was it one of the "assault weapons" that some people so desperately want to ban? Was the killing in self defense, accidental discharge, or was it something else? Did the person have a magazine that can hold more than 7 or 10 rounds? Did the person who had the gun and killed have an existing criminal record? So many questions but sadly no real answers.

  16. I have no idea why you're blaming Tony Mitchell. If he had the ball in his hands the whole game and was missing shots or turning the ball over that'd be one thing. He wasn't getting the ball at all though. I am sure FIU worked their gameplan around denying him the ball. Okay, so that's up to Benford to make the adjustment to find a way to throw it in to him. No, Benford didn't miss shot (though we shot very well last night) or turn the ball over --- but you play how you practice. If you crumble under game pressure it means the staff didn't prepare you well enough. Turning the ball over 25 times or whatever it was -- is a direct reflection of the guys not being ready. FIU had an active defense and I am sure the staff saw this on tape, but they didn't get the guys ready. It goes to what I have said in the past. I am sure there's not much difference in basketball knowledge between Benford and Coach Wooden. For a coach it's not about what you know as much about how you impart that information to your guys and get them to buy in. And on that Benford has been a failure.

  18. Kram, I'm hoping that YOU will be embarrassed when coach Benford is gone next year and you support a new coach, watch our guys suddenly get back to playing at their 2011-2012 level of play or better, yet your support of Benford over the players this season is still out on the internet for all to see. Of course, you probably wont be embarrassed when coach Benford is still here next year, and our 3 most talented players leave, and the results remain the same, if not get worse in 2013-2014.

  19. I doubt that anyone is saying that TM is THE problem, but zero points and two boards in 32 minutes does kinda have lack of effort written all over it. He probably should have gotten two boards just off of missed FT's. Of course I only listened to the game, so I can't really say that anyone was loafing, but I do believe that these guys should be going all out every game even if we had hired Hitler as JJ's replacement. At least with Hitler we would have a proven motivator with a plan, which is clearly something that's missing around here.

  22. Excellent job...hard to watch the differing efforts between this bunch of hard working ladies and what we see from the men these days. Really happy for these ladies. They, too, struggled a bit to learn a new system and a new coach. Seems it has clicked as these players have bought into Coach Petersen's system...and some who would not are no longer around the team for one reason or another. It is a joy to watch the effort these student-athletes display night in and night out. They did it when they were losing early in the year and they continue it now as the wins begin to come. And while it was rumored that a few players had some "issues" regarding the new system, they worked through them it appears. Hats off to the ladies of the Mean Green. What I see from your efforts each and every game...win or lose...makes me very proud to be a member of this great Mean Green Nation! Cannot wait to see how this team does in Hot Springs. I am looking for very good things from this group. As young as this team is, it certainly seems to be playing with a great deal of maturity. THANK you, ladies of the Mean Green! Folks, if you are a fan of women's BB or not, do yourself a favor and come watch these ladies play their hearts out...you will be happy you did and they will make you proud...win or lose!

  23. A typical 2-3 traps in the corner? you have no clue lol, maybe at the wing, but not the corner if you are trapping in the corner a 1-3-1 or 1-2-2 are much better. Every defense has weaknesses, if you run a 2-3 you are susceptible to an over load, high low or someone screening the back side of your zone driving and forcing the bottom guy to either stop penetration or take away the 3. If you run man people can run ALL kinds of sets against you that force you to decide what you want to take away.

  28. I think everyone would agree CUSA > the SBC, but ach new addition to CUSA takes some of the luster off it. One thing to consider is CUSA West is still probably the best division in the realigned Big East, CUSA, or SBC. CUSA West: UTEP, UNT, UTSA, RICE, LA Tech, S Miss, (Tulsa or UAB) CUSA East: Marshall, ODU, MTSU, UNC, MTSU, FIU, FAU, (UAB or WKY) Big East West: SMU, Houston, Tulane, Memphis, UCF, (Tulsa) Big East East: Temple, UConn, Navy, Cincy, ECU, USF SBC: TXST, AKST, UL-L, UL-M, USA, Troy, GAST, (WKY or NMSU) Big East West is cloase second, but has a random Florida outlier.

  29. I was never satisfied with the lack of a coherent approach to offense or that we struggled against the likes of UALR. I was prepared for some disruption in the hope that we might ultimately advance past where Coach Jones had gotten us. However, I am starting to feel really desperate about the basketball situation. I don't want him back though. I want someone better.

  30. I know what you mean, DeepGreen. We have a hell of a problem in that we need to convince our alums that things really have turned a corner and that it really is different this time, but it's damn near impossible to do that when we're making slow progress on the gridiron and have fallen apart in what was supposed to be our best year ever in men's basketball. On a related note, this fetish we have with re-inventing ourselves hasn't helped our cause, either. I've heard some of the development people who are trying to bolster the alumni network from the college level (a brilliant and long-overdue move, in my opinion) talk about how when they meet with older alums, those alums are scratching their heads over who the "Mean Green" are and "what's a Scrappy? Where's Eppy?" We've so schizophrenically tacked this way and that way to try to find a modern identity that we're disconnected from decades of alums who are entering the years of their lives where they have more potential to give back to the university than ever, but are left wondering what university they're giving to. No easy answers, just lots of hard work.

  31. I had a whole jeremiad scrawled down about ranking this one above that one and so forth, and then I realized I'd just spent half an hour of my life writing about the Sun Belt 2.0. I deleted it. None of the musical chairs of realignment are chiseled in stone right now, so I'm not going to mourn everyone we were all so excited about being conference mates with fleeing the conference until it actually happens. It does make me feel like we're the stinky new kid in the room who doesn't realize he stinks and is a little baffled as to why the other kids are running away. Whatever happens, I hope we can at least make our peace with the hand we're dealt. Simply put, we need to start proving we belong at the levels we all feel we belong. We prove that by winning on the gridiron, winning on the basketball court, winning on the soccer pitch, winning on the softball diamond, and winning on the tennis courts.

  38. He wasn't listed at the end of the semester. I was hearing that he was really struggling in practice, so it's not completely out of the question that he got discouraged and went home. I don't know exactly what happened but I think he is gone. Also, one thing about Mustafa that has never been questioned was his work ethic. He was the only senior at our school to ever go through the off-season in our football class for their second semester of senior year, or at least since our current coach has been here. He just isn't tall enough to play end and he doesn't have the overall size but he's doing everything he can regardless. Truss bus has improved by leaps and bounds at squats but that will always be his weakness in the weight room. Hope he picks up his effort, but he should be fine.

Although we may be guilty of drinking too much green Cool-Aid around here, I have always thought SMU's decision to join the Big East was the result of drinking way too much Peruna.* * Peruna: A heavily alcohol base elixir popular during prohibition for which the mascot is named.(She will be coming around the mountain when she comes, she will be loaded with Peruna when she comes...)

  46. -They'd beat us right now. Because we're injured and their coach, between his naps and bingo, would outcoach Benford. -Moody's renovations can't come soon enough. This place is a dump. The Pit isn't perfect but it's waaaaay better than this. -No team, unless you're 10 points better than the ponies, can beat them and the refs. -Apparently there is an official douchebag uniform. And they're all wearing it. Total attendance from outside of Highland Park? Me, my daughter and the parents of the hired help (black basketball players). -Their game against Memphis on Feb 6th is advertised as a "white out" game. From looking around the crowd could come nude...mission accomplished. And before anyone askes the obvious question...it's college basketball, within 10 miles of my house, and NT is on the road this week.
