  2. I'm more than a little leery of any preseason expectations in any sport involving UNT. Call me crazy.

  8. Come on, 90, as much as you want to think so, the players do have some responsibility regarding the way a season plays out...yes, as well as the coach. I find it hard to believe that you have absolved the players from all responsibility. This thing takes everyone...players and coaches to be successful. I find it inane that so many here want to completely excuse the players. Yes, in spite of some, teams do need player leaders...leaders find ways to get the team to finish games...you seen that lately from these guys? Leaders may even call player only meetings to try to right a listing ship. Player leaders often step up and showcase their own skills when things go badly in order to put the team on their own back when needed. We have all seen this stuff at every level. Find a post where I have ever absolved Benford from his share of the responsibility? He has demonstrated that he is indeed a rookie coach. As a rational poster recently mentioned, this situation is a two way street. Time to realize that it does, indeed, take two to tango...and, if this team is to turn this season around, it is going to take leadership from the players to get it done. If these same players return with the same attitude next season...well..you may be right about the impending disaster if so. Me, I think not...I think we will see a much different situation next season. But, I am not going to quit on this team...I'll be there Saturday, as probably you will as well, and I will be looking for signs that this team will see a leader or two emerge to help make a run toward the tournament and success there.

  10. If you want to see some good basketball Saturday, come at 5:00. The women's team plays good basketball. The skill level is amazing. Laura McCoy hits 3 pointers from the Wells Fargo logo, about 25 feet. The first time I saw her do that I thought "what are you doing ---swish". She has made herself into a good point guard through hard work. She was 6 of 7 from 3 against UALR and the miss was an off balance shot as the clock ran out on the first half. She has improved as much as any UNT athlete I can remember since she was a freshman. We have a young team - 1 senior, and they play hard and are well coached. Petersen makes in-game adjustments and they work. You can see what they are trying to accomplish. If you like basketball, like UNT, you will love this team. Your ticket to the men's game gets you in. Plenty of seats available, sit anywhere.

  17. Save for perhaps what we believe constitutes "the moral breakdown of society"...I agree with everything you stated... My problem is that one can levy out these points, get nods of agreement from the NRA and gun enthusiasts, but as soon as the word "gun" enters into the conversation as another point of contention in a discussion on GUN RELATED VIOLENCE, the response is always the same..."2nd amendment", "tyranny" and "cold, dead hands." The conversation needs to be all-encompassing.

  18. My problem with this team doesn't start with the coaches. Yes, they haven't been successful and tend to let us down, but we have 2 former head coaches on staff who have coached over 400 basketball games each. I think the problem with this team is the things that cant be coached, such as heart, effort, and laziness. How many times do you see our players laying out on the court for loose balls? How many times have you seen anyone besides Franklin take a charge? Not very many. You don't see any players out there going 100% from the start to the finish. That just hurts me to see guys with such athletic ability not using everything they can. When you have god given athleticism, use it. If you ever go watch the women's team you will see the biggest display of hustle and heart. Those girls sacrifice their bodies laying out for balls and taking charges, they show how bad they want to win, and have been about 1 play away in 8 different games from being about 12-2. The most impressive thing about this girls team is the fact that they have solid underclassmen to build around, with two transfers who could potentially be starting right now. I personally cant wait to see this team come tourney time, and next year, the future is bright for these ladies. Maybe all the hype was centered around the wrong gender....

  20. Commitment and money...or money and commitment. SMU got a big jump on us in the 19 teens and twenties and was an early entrant in Texas football (the Southwest Conference). For years it was simply no contest. Then Hayden Fry got us to near parity before he departed for Iowa. But, they've maintained an advantage with money (afford better coaches) and recruiting leverage. Houston is a little different story. We've been competitive with Houston since the 1940s although we haven't played that often. We were together in the Lone Star Conference and again in the Missouri Valley Conference but not long in either case. I believe that we were even in wins and losses until last year. However, Houston was able to get into the Southwest Conference due to some very good teams that they put together and the backing of a couple of wealthy Houstonians. Frankly, they have deserved it. We had some success beginning in the late 50s to the late 70s when Coach Fry left but we failed to take advantage of the opportunity primarily due to out administration. We were far more concerned with building academics than athletics. In 1982 when Division 1-AA was formed one of the requirements was to have a stadium that seats 30,000. Our stadium seated 20,000 and our administration would not fund an addition. Consequently, we "voluntarily" dropped to the 1-AA classification. We were an independent so we did not have the aid of a conference to help us (e.g. the MAC). After 30 years in FBS equivalency we then spent 12 years in purgatory until 1994. Coaching hires haven't been good to us although we did have four straight bowl years under Darrell Dickey but his other five years were a disaster as was the tenure of Todd Dodge (America's #1 high school coach). It has taken Coach McCarney a couple of years of trying to reestablish hard-nosed football and a winning tradition. He still doesn't quite have the talent of some others but we believe that this is the year that he turns the corner. Louisiana Tech has had some exceptional teams but the loss of their coach and 35 seniors, 17 of which were starters, should put us ahead this coming season.

  21. I think the easiest answer is the leadership at UNT turned its back on athletics as well as we were relegated to D1AA where they fed the athletic programs just enough money to stay alive. Years of neglect were terrible for our school. The past few years have seen the leadership finally investing in athletics and I truly believe it will pay off soon.

  25. A school administration that doesn't give 2 sh!+s about athletics, and did nothing for athletics until the past 8 or so years. While it has gotten somewhat better, it's not bad where it needs to be. And we consistently think and market on a FCS conference level.

  26. UNT leadership and the Southwest Conference. The SWC "was" college football in the State of Texas. Houston, SMU, TCU, and Rice, to some extent, have all benefited from their past history in the SWC.

  38. My theory Story reputedly comes from UConn so while it might be true of Cincinnati I'm assuming it applies only to UConn. Feel free to add Cincy to any proposition below. 1. UConn does want to align with C7. Four of the C7 have been conference foes since 1979 and five since 1980. (or all for Cincy since 2005). 2. UConn DOES NOT want to align with the MWC. 3. UConn does not think it can go C7 and sell MAC, CUSA or Sun Belt to the fans even though the past two years the top of MAC is comparable to MWC and Big East in football having a similar number of schools in the top half of the country. 4. The timing is no accident. UConn's president did not attend the Big East meeting so it adds an element of doubt. 5. UConn does not want to propose football only for fear of damaging the relationship if this does not work. 6. UConn is just fine with creating doubt and if that doubt leads to a football only offer in Big East to keep them from going MWC then so be it. 7. If it doesn't work, UConn can laugh it off and blame it on some blogger.

  39. When all one side of the discussion sees is a political opportunity for the mid-term elections, it is pretty impossible to have a discussion. I mean, you and I can talk about it, but a discussion that matters among the politically powerful? When was the last time an honest discussion about an important issue occurred at that level? The Clinton Administration? Maybe the Bush1? We are about 20 years deep into political polarization, and you expect an honest discussion?
    1 point
  40. So there can't be a discussion.

  41. But it's not. As much as you accuse the NRA of taking guns off gthe table, the Obama administration is just as guilty of making it COMPLETELY about the mechanism of assault. Why? Politics. It was disgusting of them to politicize this the day after the event. They didn't call it "gun control", but it was very obvious what the President meant by his comments. Of course, these are very different comments than after Aurora, because there was an election to win. This is a completely political maneuver, and it is disgusting. Here is the deal. If you want to change the gun laws, change the 2nd amendment. Follow the law. That's all I'm asking. Surely you of all people understand that making guns illegal will only ensure that the criminals are the only ones with guns. You really can't argue that this society is responsible enough to handle marihuana, cocaine, and heroin, but doesn't deserve to be trusted with guns, can you?

  42. I have a fully stocked fridge and a child-free weekend. My incentive to stay sober allll day Saturday so I can safely drive up to Denton is pretty much at zero right now. I'll go at 2,500. Lots of season tickets sold before this season began, and those count, right? Actual butts in seats? I'm going 1,800. We were all correct on one thing early in the fall. We predicted that this would be a historic basketball season for UNT, and brother, we weren't kidding!

  44. The hotels don't book up because when anybody has a conference in DFW it's in Grapevine/Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington/Addison, and Denton is too far to drive. The Mayborn Conference every summer, which isn't a particularly large conference, has to be held in Grapevine because there is NOWHERE in Denton that has the meeting space to host a conference/convention where you have break-out sessions and large group meetings. The Gateway Center is nice, but it is not a conference/convention center. Think about this for a sec too: Mac has the team stay at the Marriott across from Texas Motor Speedway because A: it's away from the distractions of campus and B: because it has the conference space needed for all the team meetings before games. Where in Denton, right now, has that kind of space for the visiting team to stay, and to keep the money they're spending, in Denton?

  45. I'm a North Texas fan, thank you. Which is not exactly a glamorous title. But it's where I CHOSE to go to school. It wasn't a backup plan. It's where my money goes. It's where my heart lies. I find it strange our alleged super fans are posting topic after topic fawning over the Aggies, but hey, maybe that's just the Mean Green in me.
