  1. I hope people aren't confusing a loss of faith in the head coach with a lack of support for the team/players.

  2. UNT did have a program to exchange out other schools' shirts for an NT one omce. In fact, it was spearheaded, fundraised and implemented by a student back in 2000. That guy is gone now...busy policing Dallas and being called "negative" because he hates mediocrity.

  3. All this talk of him falling to the second round is absurd. He's a lock to be picked in the first round if for no other reason than potential. Guys his size with his athleticism and skillset don't grow on trees. Does he need another year? I'm going to say no. Age is a valuable commodity in the NBA, and he'd be better served spending next year with an NBA team, getting NBA-caliber coaching, without having to worry about going to class. Oh, and the money doesn't hurt. He's not a center, and both Johnny and Benford refused/refuse to accept that. Given that 99% of his college minutes are spent at the 5, while 0% of his NBA minutes will be spent there, there's only so much he can improve on while here. Not to mention that everytime he touches the ball, he's got 2 or 3 defenders swarming him. In the NBA, defenses won't be gameplanning to shut him down. He's better suited to be a role player on offense. He would have to improve significantly to offset the extra year of his age being tacked on. As far as pay is concerned, in the NBA, you make the bulk of your money after your rookie contract. Even if he fell to the mid-20s, he'd still be making around 1 million, compared to 1.8 million if he was picked 10th. And if he came back to school, that's another year of possible injury, while not getting paid, with limited practice time, and mandatory classes. It is in his best interest to leave. That is not to say that I wouldn't love to have him back. I guess we'll see what happens. Go Mean Green

  6. So youre telling me that Lance making a NFL roster is better than Craig making 93 tackles in his first NFL season (2nd on his team)... I would beg to differ CUSA has to be the best, but other than that everything has been a disappointment... Im looking at a half glass empty until something changes

  9. I particularly like the made UNT 3 pointer that Benford nullified with a T.O. It would have made the score 61-58 I believe. Nothing like waiting for a player to work his way open for a 3 point shot, let him get his rythm and then call Time Out. The local sports anchore had some negative feedback on the 10 o'clock news about Mitchell looking anything BUT like an early NBA draft pick. Folks, TM got owned by WKU bench warmers from a rebuilding program. Although UNT wasn't quite as bad as I had imagined, there are definitely some fatal flaws with this team, Mostly fundamentals. Some of the things NT did last night just makes my head explode. Like, why in the hell does NT start their ½ court offense so far from the goal on an inbounds ? Even the WKU radio announcer mentioned that on air.

  12. It's a pretty sweet gig for a coach. Football assistants generally can't go out around town without having fans recognize them. One assistant told me he hasn't paid for a lunch since he's been here because someone always picks up the tab. Going to a school that has won 19 of its last 25 isn't a bad deal either. Then of course, it doesn't hurt that all but two of the guys on staff last year now have SEC gigs, three assistants from this year now have SEC gigs.

  13. Just another nail in the BE coffin. I wonder how many more it will take? The MWC will go after SDSU now. Then look at UTEP, UH, Tulsa, and SMU. Would it suck if we lost UTEP and Tulsa, yes. But if and when the BE folds we could add back Memphis, UCF, Tulane and others. Although I'm sure the CUSA commish is kicking himself in the nuts with the ODU add.

  15. Tony can and should go pro. He has nothing left that this coaching staff can do for him. I've said it before and I'll say it again...good coaches adjust their system to the strengths of their players. Think Mike Shanahan, a guy with TWO Super Bowl rings, is glad he catered his offense to fit a rookie QB? The Cowboys aren't. Tony has an above average ability, in my estimation, to take a fellow big man offthe dribble. I'd run sets where we vlear out and let him try to get to the hole. Not all the time, or even primarily, but I'd run it every time they start to pack it in. I'd run pick and rolls with CJ and J-Will where someone is always dive cutting into the center of that zone. Hell, I'd run anything that differs from stagnant passing around the perimeter and praying for our shooting percentage to magically improve. This kid KNOWS (not thinks) he could be getting paid to do this for a living. He came back because he does love his teammates, this school and being in school in general. Even more than his freak athleticism I was always amazed and how humble and childlike he was. It's not fun for him out there. And if some of you stubborn folks can't see that waging a war if wills with the best talent we've ever seen shows a complete lack of wisdom on the part of the ADULTS in this equation then NT athletics will never be without customers...because you'll buy anything.

  16. I posted this in the EN earlier. Yesterday was another good one for Sunbelt Conference talent. FAU's Alfred Morris destroyed the Cowboys last night, rushing for 200 yards on 33 carries, and becamse the Skin's all time leading rusher for a single season. What I noticed most about him though was, unlike Mr. Oklahoma Sooner Demarco Murray, Morris never raised his hand to ask to be brought out of the game even though he had twice the work load. Murray looked gassed despite only 17 carries. In case your wondering how Morris did against the Mean Green while playing at FAU. Over a 4 year span, he started the last three, he rushed 103 times for 435 yards and three touchdowns against us. We won the final two games against his team. Last year he had a quiet 165 yards on 23 carries and a TD in a 31-17 loss to the Mean Green. Also, I saw where T. Y. Hilton had another good performance with a 70 yard TD to help the Colts beat Houston yesterday sending the Texans down to the number three spot in the AFC and setting the Colts up for a good run in the playoffs. 17. As Harry has heard me say often, I'm not a huge fan of the recruiting services. However I thought this was interesting. Of the 12 schools in, entering, or leaving the Sun Belt there are 47 alums on NFL rosters. Of those 47 only two are offensive linemen. My take away is that at most positions on the field, most especially the defensive positions it is very hard to project who is going to make it. But offensive linemen have to have such a rare combination of size, speed, and instinct that identifying the great ones at age 17 is much easier.

  18. Just FYI....I have no clue who you are, so I don't dislike you or like you. In fact, it is a "who cares" to me. It is just that your posts are so inane and childish and immature that folks just wish you would go away and go play with the rest of the Cougar diaper set in your own board. Why you constantly have to come here to post reflects your immaturity. Just go let your Mom know you need a diaper change and go away. And, as far as you calling me old and that hurting my feelings....oh, man...I have been called much worse by far more immature folks on this board. Being called old is a badge of honor I will wear proudly. Not much one can do about their age, but you can certainly do something about your immaturity and need for recognition here on GMG.com. But, Happy New Year to you...maybe you can grow up and go away in 2013. Or, start posting appropriately here...maybe folks can learn that Cougar King is really not so inane after all...give it a try. Appropriate conversation welcome here....give it a try sometime. And, I will add...this post...other than the first part...is very good and a case in point. Keep this up and folks here might just start reading your posts again. I gave you a plus 1 for this....

  19. Happy New Year to the Mean Green Nation. Have a grand New Year's Eve and New Year's Day Celebration and bring in the New Year in Mean Green style. If you are in the area you can start the celebration at UNT 90 Grad's Collin County watch party at Rudy's in Allen for the game tonight...the party on...be safe and have fun! Good things, yes, good things, are ahead for the Mean Green in 2013 with the new basketball practice facility, the very real possibility of starting the rebirth of the baseball program at UNT, an improved football team, a full slate of home football games in 2013 , the Sunbelt Tournament in Hot Springs (last one...you really do not want to miss it), the start of UNT's CUSA affiliation, another winning year for soccer, volleyball, golf, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, etc. And a few things that we will "discover" as 2013 progresses. Lots of reason for high spirits for the Mean Green faithful heading into 2013. Have a great new year...be safe...have fun and continue to believe in the MEAN GREEN!

  20. "Meatloaf is now crowloaf?" Good lord that is lame, just how dorky are you in real life? This is why I usually ignore your posts, you are horrible at smack talk. You or Kram (who actually doesn't like me because I said something about him being old or something like that once) try to come at me almost every time I post something even when it has absolutely nothing to do with flaming or trolling and you guys fail miserably doing so. ANYWAY, relating to the thread. This was a problem on the UH campus for quite a while until Khator and some UH professors started a campaign about 4 years ago called "Keep Houston Red". That and the recent success of the football team and the rise of 5-star recruit Danuel House leading the now 10-2 basketball team has cause the number of people wearing other school's shirts on campus has dropped dramatically. The ONLY person I've seen on campus wearing another school's shirt since I got here was some dude in the library wearing a Yale shirt. As far as how the Keep Houston Red campaign works, is that there is always a place where you can trade in other school's shirts and get a free UH t-shirt in return. The goal of that is to eliminate the excuse of "I don't have a UH shirt and can't afford one at the bookstore." This was also why they give out over 5000 t-shirts on game day as well. (Even though I have NEVER seen anybody wear another school's shirt at a UH football or basketball game unless they were the opposing team's fans) When we had our basketball game against Aggy at the beginning of the month, Keep Houston Red had an event where if you had an Aggy shirt, you can exchange for a UH shirt and a Popcorn voucher. Also what professors are doing now, is if you were to come into their class with another school's shirt on, they will make you turn it inside out and tell you to come by their office later on for a UH shirt. I think UNT needs a "Keep Denton Green" campaign similar to UH. An aggressive administration plus a winning football and/or basketball team will do wonders for school spirit and eliminating the other school's t-shirts on campus problem. When I was at UNT, I was annoyed at seeing people wear other school's crap on campus and even my roommate I had an apartment with wore Whorn gear around campus and we lived literally a five minute WALK from the Super Pit yet he refused to go to the UNT games and instead watched Whorn games on TV and always said "we" when referring to them. He didn't even know who Tony Mitchell was until I told him. Even then, he still wasn't interested. UNT really needs to reach out to students like him if they want to make this less of a problem. I know Villareal does it, but just hi, doing it is not enough.

  26. There truly is nothing that we can do. The "business model" is completely broken. Imagine that company X sells cars. Company X appoints a guy (let's call him Bob) to hire salesmen for and manage all of their dealerships. The two biggest "revenue" dealerships are in Dallas and Houston. Bob hires a salesman for the Dallas dealership who came from selling go-carts....and gives him a long contract. The salesman brings his assistant go-cart salesmen with him and they attempt to sell cars the way they sold go-carts. For four years sales numbers drop dramatically and long time customers are lost. But, during the go-cart salesman's tenure a new dealership is funded (by customers) so Bob gets credit for this. Let's say that Bob also hires a new salesman for the Houston dealership....and gives him a long contract though he has never been a head salesman before. This dealership recently lost its head salesman to a larger company after posting car sales numbers unlike any in this dealership's history. The new head salesman immediately posts abysmal sales numbers. Pathetic, wretched numbers. But the sales numbers are laid at the feet of the junior salesmen who are accused of not being "mature" enough to handle the new sales plan...the same folks who posted great numbers under the old head salesman. (And this doesnt even take into account the HORRIBLE head sales lady that Bob hired at the Austin dealership). You'd probably let Bob go wouldn't you? Not so fast...Bob is best buddies with the chairman of company X's board. Nobody in this entire organization is touchable. None of them. And Company X is expected to compete somehow in the marketplace.

WKU was FAR FAR FAR from 100%...dahbeed came over here and outlined just how banged up they were a few days ago. So, we can't find wins against Sun Belt teams that are depleted. 28. What will be used in recruiting against us is that UNT can't develop players. Not just Tony, but CJ and JWill, also. 0-2 in this critical 3 game stretch on the way to 0-3 and a complete loss of confidence. Terrible, terrible, terrible hire.

  36. You forgot to mention that "Bob" couldn't ever get that new dealership approved, but one of the "customers" actually led a campaign to get it approved, only because they kept Bob as silent as possible and basically got it passed by keeping the election on the lowdown, knowing that most of the citizens of that locality would've done everything possible to vote for its approval. The citizenry likes music, arts, education, and nature, but has generally loathed athletics, particularly ones that require money. And, yet, somehow "Bob" got a job in this company and said to the few citizens that cared, "Let's actually cater to you, by letting you tailgate in the parking lot. I'll tell everyone that we are a sleeping giant!! I'll make you feel like you just bought a Mercedes instead of a lemon." The few that care are totally mesmerized by this, since they have been treated so poorly for decades. They think that he will bring in the best sales directors possible, since we are in a hotbed for trucks and SUVs. Nevermind that he only hires go-car salespeople. And, somehow, the Board of Directors, who actually love the arts, music, education, nature, etc...are thrilled by RV. He doesn't cost much, he talks up a good game, and doesn't get in the way of any of their beloved "interests". So, in the end, the dealer will continue to trump up its one great bit of recognition that it ever gets--the cost of the product is very affordable as compared to other dealers like ours. What a great "value"... We've been sold a bill of goods here. And there's nothing we can do about it, since the Better Business Bureau (local media) absolutely don't give two $hits about the dealer's cars or personnel.

  37. Still acting like an assistant coach. Bad times ahead. You guys turned it around after you fired McDummy, as you call him, and were a completely different team than the one we destroyed when they came to Denton 6 days after you guys fired McDonald. I don't see us ever firing Benford this season, so I don't see a turn around. I feel very bad for our players.
    1 point
  38. I certainly don't want to add gas to the fire....but. a good friend of mine was behind your bench and he said your boy is in over his head. On one play you guys had trapped George Fant in the corner. He made a perfect skip pass to an open 3. You guys had done nothing wrong. George just happened to make a very good play. Benford reamed your players about their rotation. Sometimes you can do everything right and the other guy makes a play. That's 'tip your cap' time. But he didn't know what he was talking about. We know what you're going through after our bout with McDummy. I followed the SIU board and watched it devolve as their fans turned on Lowery. Ours devolved the same way. You have a couple apologists but most educated fans can tell when someone is lost. Complaining on message boards 'might' have some impact but what got the dummy fired was declining attendance. I just don't see any way short of a massive scandal that your university would even consider getting rid of Benford. There is still time to turn this season around. We went to the NCAA tourney with a losing record. If you play the way you did last night coupled with our conference you'll start winning some games. I hope it begins at Middle. Btw, he didn't kill us last night but I've always really liked Franklin. He's a high motor player and a class act. At least when we've faced him.

  39. But Lombardi sees a brewing quandary. “The number of F.B.S.-level football teams is already too large to be sustainable,” he said. “And the teams at the top are a very strong, organized group. As more schools join at the bottom, it’s going to force the N.C.A.A. to restructure. They’ll have to start putting F.B.S. teams into categories. “So there will be a second tier again, and that’s certainly not what a lot of these people joining now had in mind. What happens then?” D1A, D1AA?

  41. If Tony's play doesn't improve dramatically, I'm not sure if the choice will be his. During our last home game with tons of NBA scouts, Tony layed an egg (and not a golden one) - heck, he didn't even make his free throws, much less do anything else at an elite level. Of course, Tony can't win games on his own, and he doesn't have poor performances in a vacuum - he is reliant heavily on how well his teammates play - so Tony's NBA future certainly depends on his team mates improving their game as much as it depends on his play. I think the future of our basketball program as a potential elite program depends on Tony more than anyone suspects. If Tony's NBA career gets ruined by coming to UNT, we'll have to wait another 50 years to find another 5* player with his talent who will commit to us. However, if Tony and the team can pull this season out, and he gets drafted to the NBA, I think this will show other elite players that they can play UNT and continue on to their future in the NBA. Tony's success (or the lack of it), in my opinion, has the potential to dramatically help or hinder the signing of future elite athletes.

  46. As far as I know, other than the 3 point line, the basketball floor hasn't been repainted or refinished since before the 2005(?) season, when we changed from the dark forest green to the current SOW green, baseline font and center court logo. If you get a chance after the next home game to go down onto the court, look at where the letters are on the baseline. You can see where the old paint scheme was just painted over. I noticed when I took this portrait of coach Peterson that the center of the court around the North Texas logo is a different color from the rest of the court. http://www.dentonrc.com/incoming/20121112-drc_110812_mikepeterson1.jpg.ece When we changed fonts and the center court logo, the center was sanded down and repainted, but the rest of the clear stain on the court is a lot yellower because the finish is much, much older. Seems to me that if we can get a few million bucks to get a center hung video board and new LED tables, we could get somebody to donate the money to refinish the floor and get to name it, like when Mattress Mac got to name the practice field. I mean "Bill Blakeley Court at The Super Pit" sounds pretty good to me. (not advocating naming it after Blakeley, just spitballing ideas)
