I certainly don't want to add gas to the fire....but. a good friend of mine was behind your bench and he said your boy is in over his head. On one play you guys had trapped George Fant in the corner. He made a perfect skip pass to an open 3. You guys had done nothing wrong. George just happened to make a very good play. Benford reamed your players about their rotation. Sometimes you can do everything right and the other guy makes a play. That's 'tip your cap' time. But he didn't know what he was talking about. We know what you're going through after our bout with McDummy. I followed the SIU board and watched it devolve as their fans turned on Lowery. Ours devolved the same way. You have a couple apologists but most educated fans can tell when someone is lost. Complaining on message boards 'might' have some impact but what got the dummy fired was declining attendance. I just don't see any way short of a massive scandal that your university would even consider getting rid of Benford. There is still time to turn this season around. We went to the NCAA tourney with a losing record. If you play the way you did last night coupled with our conference you'll start winning some games. I hope it begins at Middle. Btw, he didn't kill us last night but I've always really liked Franklin. He's a high motor player and a class act. At least when we've faced him.7 points

At 44 degrees at kickoff this morning the chill factor was nearly 30 degrees warmer than the last time Emmitt and I attended this bowl game. I'll never concern myself over access in and out of Apogee ever again. For all of the big money brewhaha TCU spent on stadium improvements...their access and parking is still absolutley pathetic, and that was for just-over a half full stadium. Rice is disciplined on both sides of the LOS. I like how they dont waste time or timeouts, especially on short yardage downs. And they still know how to use the TE as a weapon. Their fanbase is still tiny, saw high school games with more fans in the stands this year than they had today. Still, they will be tough next year with so much talent returning. It was good to see a C-USA team dominate one from the Mountain. Rick6 points

MAC has 10 schools that have been in the league longer than CUSA has existed. The difference is in the culture of the schools. If you look across the Southwest and Southeast you have a group of schools that mostly have in their background a time they were a member of the Missouri Valley, the Southland, or the Southern. Those three conferences were all I-A in December of 1981 and I-AA in January of 1982 without warning. The MAC just barely dodged moving down and at one point actually expelled EMU to protect their future. Cincinnati was actually reclassified I-AA sued to block it and got back in before the case was settled. During the era of the 1970's and early 1980's the NCAA TV deal and later the CFA deal that many larger independents were a member of paid a percentage out by school and then you got extra per appearance. 24 of 32 bowl slots were at-large. It was the era of the great independents. Florida State, Miami, Penn State, Pitt, South Carolina, Syracuse, West Virginia, Southern Miss, Boston College and before that Houston all had some great teams in addition to the folks at Notre Dame. So you had schools like Houston and others leaving conference affiliation to go independent (a path Memphis and UNT followed with less success). There were so many indys that scheduling was no great problem. The TV rules capped you at 5 national appearances over 2 years so if you could play well ABC was casting about for someone, anyone to show on TV that was any good. The schools of the region had little reason to be in a football conference because half of the conferences couldn't even promise a bowl bid and the conference had zero to do with your ability to get on TV. The MAC was located in an area where there was no strong history of independent football and an indy struggled to find regional opponents. They stuck together first because they needed to just to fill a schedule, then later because of the Tangerine Bowl tie and then the California Bowl tie. The grand midwest independent experiment was NIU. Left the MAC in 1986, by 1992 had staggered into the Big West and back to indy for 1996 and then the MAC in 1997. The turmoil left them with 9 years without a winning season including 0-11 the first year back in the MAC. Three years later the started a run of 7 straight winning seasons and regular season .500 or better in 13 of 14 seasons. In the years since Bowling Green and Toledo joined the MAC, UNT has been: Gulf Coast, Missouri Valley, Independent, Southland, Independent, Big West, Sun Belt and now CUSA. Arkansas State in that span has been: Southland, Independent, Big West, Independent, Big West, Sun Belt. At most MAC schools a 25 year old alum hates the same schools that a 45 year old alum hates and he hates the same ones the 65 year old alum hates. Across the south (outside of the SEC) there is not that shared experience among alums because of the ever shifting line-ups.4 points

If Tony's play doesn't improve dramatically, I'm not sure if the choice will be his. During our last home game with tons of NBA scouts, Tony layed an egg (and not a golden one) - heck, he didn't even make his free throws, much less do anything else at an elite level. Of course, Tony can't win games on his own, and he doesn't have poor performances in a vacuum - he is reliant heavily on how well his teammates play - so Tony's NBA future certainly depends on his team mates improving their game as much as it depends on his play. I think the future of our basketball program as a potential elite program depends on Tony more than anyone suspects. If Tony's NBA career gets ruined by coming to UNT, we'll have to wait another 50 years to find another 5* player with his talent who will commit to us. However, if Tony and the team can pull this season out, and he gets drafted to the NBA, I think this will show other elite players that they can play UNT and continue on to their future in the NBA. Tony's success (or the lack of it), in my opinion, has the potential to dramatically help or hinder the signing of future elite athletes.4 points

Get a new gig, Sarge...I guess you and FFR had a love fest together in all the negativity all the time at the AF-Rice game. Why is it that you seem to think negativity is "breadth of opinions", but the same is not correct regarding positive comments? If it's fine to knock everything that is RV and UNT then it should be OK to praise where one believes praise is due as well. Last time I looked it's opinions and you seem to have plenty to hem as well. Hammering on me constantly is getting a tad lame and old...perhaps you could tell us about more cookie bakes or something instead for awhile...or about how much you love UT. You have been fairly quiet on that front for awhile.4 points

I reserved my comment on this team until I had ample time to evaluate, now I can tell you exactly why we suck... No one on this team has the "see ball get ball reflex" (Ex. The primary source of the Honeybadgers sucess)! What I mean by that is no one on this team has the instinct to scoop loose balls, hustle for possession, etc... This is the first thing grade school coaches try and develop, even before shooting technique. Hustle plays change games. Our players, for the most part, lack off the ball basketball instincts. This is why we are always late to the spot and end up getting blasted from the land of 3. Cant coach basketball IQ my friends...3 points

"Mitchell came into the season with huge expectations. Many scouts wondered aloud whether he'd be a surefire top-five pick if he played at a big school. Many thought he'd put up huge numbers this season. So far, Mitchell has been a major disappointment. His team is just 3-4, and his numbers are down across the board -- lower field goal percentage, shooting just 29 percent from 3, fewer rebounds, fewer assists. Scouts who see him in games are all coming back with the same question: Is he really a lottery pick? The answer: Not if he keeps playing this way all season." http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/features/rumors/_/date/20121220#9279 6. Tony Mitchell, F, North Texas No one has been a bigger disappointment than Mitchell for NBA scouts. Mitchell seriously flirted with the draft last year and, had he declared, would have gone somewhere in the mid-to-late first round. Many believed that with another year under his belt, and in the weak Sun Belt league, Mitchell would be putting up player of the year-type numbers this season. Instead, he has regressed a bit as a player. His numbers across the board are down and so are his team's. He is going to need a very strong season to pull himself back into the top 10. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog/_/name/nba_draft/id/8746402/nba-cody-zeller-otto-porter-lead-nation-top-sophomores2 points

I guess Benford was so focused on his hoop hugs or whatever he called them before the season started, and caused him to forget how to coach a basketball team. Fire Benford2 points

There truly is nothing that we can do. The "business model" is completely broken. Imagine that company X sells cars. Company X appoints a guy (let's call him Bob) to hire salesmen for and manage all of their dealerships. The two biggest "revenue" dealerships are in Dallas and Houston. Bob hires a salesman for the Dallas dealership who came from selling go-carts....and gives him a long contract. The salesman brings his assistant go-cart salesmen with him and they attempt to sell cars the way they sold go-carts. For four years sales numbers drop dramatically and long time customers are lost. But, during the go-cart salesman's tenure a new dealership is funded (by customers) so Bob gets credit for this. Let's say that Bob also hires a new salesman for the Houston dealership....and gives him a long contract though he has never been a head salesman before. This dealership recently lost its head salesman to a larger company after posting car sales numbers unlike any in this dealership's history. The new head salesman immediately posts abysmal sales numbers. Pathetic, wretched numbers. But the sales numbers are laid at the feet of the junior salesmen who are accused of not being "mature" enough to handle the new sales plan...the same folks who posted great numbers under the old head salesman. (And this doesnt even take into account the HORRIBLE head sales lady that Bob hired at the Austin dealership). You'd probably let Bob go wouldn't you? Not so fast...Bob is best buddies with the chairman of company X's board. Nobody in this entire organization is touchable. None of them. And Company X is expected to compete somehow in the marketplace.2 points

They did it when they split into 1a and 1aa divisions, and I don't recal any lawsuit. The NCAA is an organization that you join. If you don't like their rules try the NAIA.2 points

And the only school that we possibly hate (generationally) would be SMU. And because we don't play them on a regular basis, this falls more into the "stalker" relationship, rather than the "rival" relationship. And based on what I have read about the generation(s) before me at North Texas, I'm not sure that the student body even hated any other school. The administrators of that era would have regarded it as impolite.2 points

What happens then is a class action anti-trust lawsuit. That's why what Lombardi suggests will never happen.2 points
-
But Lombardi sees a brewing quandary. “The number of F.B.S.-level football teams is already too large to be sustainable,” he said. “And the teams at the top are a very strong, organized group. As more schools join at the bottom, it’s going to force the N.C.A.A. to restructure. They’ll have to start putting F.B.S. teams into categories. “So there will be a second tier again, and that’s certainly not what a lot of these people joining now had in mind. What happens then?” D1A, D1AA?2 points

People who blame the players are nothing more than apologist for the head coach in this situation. This is a MORE TALENTED TEAM than the one that was 3 minutes away from the NCAA tournament last year. Completely unbelievable that they would blame kids for the responsibility that so obviously falls on the shoulders of this coaching staff and the Athletic department (for hiring this coaching staff). WKU was severly undermanned. This staff still can't figure a way to get the ball to it's best player in a positiion to be successful. This staff has taken a preseason consensus pick to win the West and completely demolished it. Who was that Consenus pick to win the East? MTSU. And they are well on there way. I guess their players deserve all the credit, right? They are just so much more mature than our players, right? For all of you who refuse to acknowledge the huge failure that is taking place right in front of your very own eyes, I have one question for you: WHEN? When we finish with 9 or 10 wins, will you then acknowledge that this staff has some accountability? When players start transferring at year end? Seriously, WHEN?!?!?2 points

My girlfriend is supposed to be getting back to Los Angeles on Saturday, so I may miss most (if not all) of the game helping her settle back in. Still, it's a huge one -- we could really start to turn things around with a W. Or, let things spiral further with a loss.1 point

Is it really possible that this guy is for real? He is 6'1", 210lbs, runs a 4.55 40, has a 36" vertical, a 3.78 gpa, benches 400lbs, and is only a 2 star recruit with offers from non power conference schools. Unless his Rivals data is all wrong, this guy looks he would be a truck at safety. http://rivals.yahoo.com/northtexas/football/recruiting/player-Jeffrey-Canady-101121;_ylt=AnfEQ22_QLWmQRURL8M6vEPNSMJ_1 point

Nope just commenting on the fact that you jump on those of us who choose to be positive while giving those who like you seem to want to criticize all the time a pass. Seems a tad ironic to me...and if it's OK for you guys to constantly criticize, why is it not OK to find something positive? You can have your position of negativity and I can be one of those who choose to see things differently. If it bothers you for someone to be positive...well, just ignore the posts and have a love fest with all the negative folks...no problem...it's an opinion board, right? Maybe we can get together and bake cookies for the ladies of the 911 division.1 point

As fun as sub-threads about internet marketing and poking fun of the jilted fan boys is can we back to my t-shirt cannon idea. Or can we at least observe the irony that this board goes down the rabbit hole about lack of school sprit on every other thread, but now that there is actually a timely thread about school spirt no one is talking about the actual issue.1 point

Just wondering why the mods would let this guy and a couple of others hang around. Doesn't make much sense to me...and all boards who advertise care about hits by the way. At least that is what the professionals who create these things for a living tell me about this sort of thing. Just repeating what I was told when I asked a guy about it. It's not a rag on you guys, just a comment....and a possible reason for allowing these guys to hang around.1 point

The only reason I even posted his info is because he is listed as having a 400lb bench press, which is unheard of out of a DB. Assuming that is real, coupled with his height, weight, decent speed and vertical, he would be an interesting prospect. Based on the lack of interest from the major programs, his measurables may not be accurate. I didn't have lunch pail or coach's son checked in the search filter.1 point

Some time no change is the best. You talk about how intolerable everyone in DFW are, which is a pretty broad generalization, yet can't figure out why you've pissed people off. Nobody is making you live around here. Besides, the thread was about how classless adding MF'er to our fight song is and you don't agree. Again, tells me all I need to know. BTW, I feel chanting bullshit after a poor call is classless also and reflects poorly on the people participating. Blame my parents, and my father played and coached up to the college level.1 point
