  1. I call bs on this one, I think you will find that any athelete that can get into NT can get into TCU or SMU. Also he has signed with NT, why worry about him going elsewhere unless he can't qualify at NT.

  2. Yeah, because nothing builds a program like cowardice. They beat a mountain west team in front of about 57 people. Im not terribly worried about the game in 2014.

  6. Unless by some miracle we gain a couple of playmakers at WR, run stopping DTs, and consistent pass rushing threats at DE, we're 4-8, possibly 5-7 again. If not, we will have three runners with 500+ yards again, not much at WR, and a defense worn out again in the second half of games...and done in November. Haven't seen much in recruiting to tip the scales on what we've seen so far.

  7. I know this season is a major disappointment, but this guy has size, wheels, handles, leaping ability, and ability to shoot an finish. It might look real good because of editing, but there are highlight reels of guys that can't accomplish much of what's in that video. He is a good player and a real good piece to have in our quest to turn things around from the beginning of this year and to keep things going from the past few years. The future looks good if we can keep landing his caliber.

  9. I don't have a penchant for playing with lights and causing a power outage in the southern United States...but I do have the gift of humor. So, I give to you all The Police Files Holiday Edition. Over the past four months I've been down here supervising (read, cleaning up) the 9-1-1 call center. And in that time I've learned that, as Flavor Flav so eloquently said, 9-1-1 is a joke in your town. Not because of the system or even the responding officers...but because of the geniuses that reside in this here big city. Here are a few of the gems I've experienced... A lady called in today requesting we send officers to her home to...unlock her hancuffs because she lost the key. Apparently while mommy was kissing Santa Claus she decided to take things in an S&M direction and forgot that you need a safe word AND a handcuff key. Another woman called in to report that she needed police because Wal-Mart "wouldn't let their employees go." The audacity of Wal-Mart to ask people to work while the store is open on Christmas Eve. Yesterday and older woman from far North Dallas called 9-1-1 to complain that the local sub-station wouldn't answer the phone and she needed an officer to come speak at her neighborhood watch event. I guess she and her friends are looking for crime prevention tips that go beyond be rich, be white, live behind iron gates and live far from the inner city. That we didn't have an officer to dispatch to her FROM THE 9-1-1 CALL CENTER was simply unacceptable. I'm told the complaint is forthcoming...I'll continue holding my breath. A man called to complain that he was unsatisfied with his lap dance at the Lipstick Lounge. He was highly intoxicated and, since all of our lines are recorded, I made sure I got him to explain in full detail that the dancers at the nude establishment didn't grind on him properly. Needless to say, his "theft" report never got filed. About a month ago a man called to complain that he was shopping at the Wal-Mart near 75 and Lemmon and that he observed an officer who was...wait for it...on his cell phone and laughing. When I asked the man if there was some emergency that this officer should have been tending to he replied that there was not but that he just couldn't see how we could allow our officers the free time to talk on a phone. Then, when I asked if perhaps this officer was working an off-duty job and was simply there to respond to on-site disturbances and offenses, he became irate and told me that it was ridiculous that police officers could work off-duty and make money to be security when "the rest of us have to rely on ONE job that doesn't pay as much." Not too long ago a man called to report his vehicle "stolen." The man stated that, because he doesn't have great credit, he went to an dealership with a friend and that the two co-signed on the financing for the vehicle. It seems that the two of them went to a party and, when this man became drunk, he gave the keys to this same friend and asked him to drive him home. Well, it seems the friend dropped him off and never returned the vehicle. So, this genius wanted to report his vehicle "stolen" because the registered owner hadn't returned it. This man called back and argued with me FIVE TIMES. And now for a "success story". Two months ago a lady called in to report that the little girl next door to her was being beaten by her step-father. The woman could hear everything that was happening and, though she had been threatened with physical violence by this man before if she interfered, she called 9-1-1. She stayed on the line with our operator for 35 minutes and gave amazing detail about both the father and the little girl. Because of her officers knew that the man owns a firearm and we were able to tactically go in and arrest him. The man has since been released from jail on bond and this woman has since moved because of him. The silver lining you ask? I was able to track down her new address and I went to thank her in person. I've also since nominated her for a Citizen's Certificate of Merit. She'll be honored at a citizen's award banquet in the Spring that the DPD puts on. So, as you hang your stockings and tuck in the little ones tonight thank God for two things. First, you're not stupid like some of these people. And second, we have the gift of laughter to enjoy said stupid people.

  10. I know this young man. I also know that the UNT coaches tried hard to talk him out of walking away. Even his own mother tried to get him to stay. He would not listen to anyone. Trust me, he isn't a great loss. I doubt he wil EVER graduate. I hope he will, but I doubt it. He would only have counted against our academics and would NEVER have been the kind of kid you could count on. HIs maturity level is not completely his fault. He has a rough family situation, but you can see from his comments that he sometimes does not use very good judgement. He also does not often listen to those trying to point him in the right direction. We are better off without him. Don't sweat it.

  11. This is how it goes EVERY year.... December to beginning of February...Everyone talks about how great our recruits look on film, how ratings services are overhyped and how our coaching staff will do amazing things for their strength and potential. February...Commitments come in and we dedicate no less than ten threads to where these freshmen and JUCO's will slide right into the two deep. March to August...Every time a group of players steps into a weight room or tweets how good they feel in off-season workouts we label them as being "a beast next year" or comment on how they look so much bigger/faster than last year. We herald the coming of a bowl team all the way through spring ball and then sing praises about either our offense or defense during the spring game...whichever happens to win that particular day. In fall practice we'll complain about how we're not allowed to watch practice but we'll also act as if football was just recently invented at North Texas if a youtube video of them lifting weights or hitting eachother is leaked. August...the season record predictions will really take off. The usual suspects will rationalize just how we can stay on the field with...insert body bag game here...and how we should be able to win at least 6-8 games because of...insert new player/improved player or coach here. September...A large crowd will show up to watch the home opener and, if tradition holds, we'll lay an egg. Those people will spend the rest of the season drinking on the hill. We'll muddle through our OOC games and at least one of them will result in a loss that we'll lament for the rest of the season. October through November...Everyone will predict that "none of our opponents could be as tough as...insert BCS school here...so we'll have a better feel for where we stand". After playing .500 ball or slightly below we'll whimper to the finish line and the rallying cries of "next year" will ring from the mountain tops. And then the process begins anew...

  14. And you can chose to think the best if you want. I think we all know that I meant if we went head to head for a Lake Dallas DE and lost him to UTSA, it would hurt. Losing any recruit head to head to UTSA should be considered unacceptable by this fan base.

  19. Didn't the Super Pit have one of those mid-court hanging down scoreboards before? Several years ago there was a rash of several scorboards crashing to the ground, fortunately when it happed no one was around and got hurt. So long as they stay attached to the ceiling, I would like to see one again (or for the first time if we didn't have one before) at the Super Pit.

  20. The other necessity is new lighting. It's very dim in the pit right now. We need the kid of lighting they have at summit arena in Hot Springs. Would also be cool to have lights that could turn off for intros.

  21. 1. Change of coaches and scheme can most certainly affect shooting percentages. When Ray took over for McDummy last year our percentages went up in every category. 2. You will shoot your best percentage of the year against us at Diddle Arena. It has a great shooters background. 3. Shooting is a lost art due to emphasis on the dunk and the 'dribble drive' offense trickling down to the lower levels. 4. If your team can install a press we're in big trouble. Caden Dickerson is out. TJ Price has been out for 4 games now. Jamal Crook broke his foot against Murray. Kevin Kaspar tried to play against Louieville but couldn't go. That's the top 2 point gods and top 2 shooting guards out. 5. Some of our fans are complaining about us looking 'rough' against Murray, and VCU, on the road and Louieville in Nashville. 6. I've never seen a UNT team play poorly in Diddle and don't expect it now. 7. Scandals don't necessarily get coaches fired. See McDummy in his parking garage escapades. One year of losing doesn't get them fired. Continued losing does get them fired.

  24. It could be as simple as the coach trying to install a new offensive system with the parts that just aren't meshing. He may just have to recruit his style of ballplayer to fit the system he is installing. Unfortunately, that may not be the answer you want to hear because of the expectations. This system may not be the best for the type of player that was hear when he arrived, but I do see it as an offensive system that is more team oriented. Johnnie's style revolved more along isolation, whereas this seems to revolve on rotating the basketball with its many facets to get an open shot. Both can be effective with the talent it has on hand. It may take a class or two until we see the type of team ball you were hoping for. GMG

  25. Last step is to fix the audio system and paint that ugly brown wood green! Also it would be nice if we could get rid of the green rim around the court andhave seats a bit closer all around including the benches. Still an excellent place to watch a game!

  26. Good question... They did not specify. I was just going off of what I heard during the game. Also I am sure these teams hold "optional practices" like all of the high school teams in all sports.

  27. Yep. Kind of my point. I was trying to be generous on listing us as the favorite in a few of those games. Maybe 2-3 games you look at and say we will be a favorite in (even if only a small favorite), but in several games we will likley be 1-9 point dogs, plus a couple of double digit dogs. Not that we can't win some of those games, but we will be fighting an uphill battle and will have to prove people wrong about us next year if we want to win 6 or more games (and I sure hope we do). Go Mean Green

  28. ‎'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the streets, Not a person was stirring, 'cept an officer on the beat. As he quietly patrolled the town with great care, children and parents slept peacefully there. ... The officer was clad in his blues and his vest, gun on his hip, always looking his best. He'd just pulled aside for a quick bite to eat, When all of a sudden, out on the street, A bright light appeared from out of nowhere, He shielded his eyes from the brilliant glare. 'Twas an angel of the Lord at the squad's rear, He smiled and spoke, "Dear Officer, don't fear." "I've been sent by God with a message for you who faithfully serve while wearing the blue. He wants you to know He loves you all, He's pleased with the way you've answered His call. "To protect and serve others, so selfless you've been, Your bravery and kindness have known no end. Even in tragedy, when nights became long, You've helped countless strangers by being strong. "God sees your heart, the joy and the pain, He knows the profession can often bring strain. So he sent me here to let you know, That as you patrol, He goes where you go. "As you protect others, your Father protects you, His angels go with you, His Spirit does, too. No bullet too fast, no bad guy too strong, I'm sent to make sure that your life will be long. "So fear not the night, and fear not the day, fear not the threats that might come your way. I'm sent to accompany you on your beat, There's not one moment you're alone on the street." The officer sat stunned by the love of His God, He bowed his head, with a tear gave a nod. As the officer said thank you, the angel took flight, "God's got your back, carry on, and goodnight."

  31. Bottom line....the worst shooting team I've ever seen at North Texas. You can blame the coach, but they had plenty of open looks against Lehigh and failed to either make them or try to make them. Lehigh made them with ease from the same locations with approximately the same amount of defensive pressure. It the players can't put it in the basket, no coaching scheme on earth will fix that at this level. The other teams quickly learn to crowd the inside and ignore our outside game....because we have none.

And while he will never be our Doug Flutie, he can certainly be a serviceable D1 QB. If he can stay healthy like he did last year but return to the form he had the previous year (maybe even with a little improvement?), he could potentially help the team get to 6 or 7 wins.

  35. I was at NTSU in back half of the sixties when the school was in the Missouri Valley Conference and played before 4,000 fans in the bleachers of the gym ("snake pit"). NTSU dominated football '66 thru '68, but basketball was much tougher in the MVC. Still, the Eagles were competitive, and the gym was packed nearly every game. Living in Dallas and later back in hometown of Richardson after graduation, I had season tickets for the Cowboys for 19 years (until JJ bought the club), and the Mavericks for ten years. Pro sports ticket prices were already getting ridiculous by the time we moved to Flower Mound seven years ago, and the move made it easy to get reattached to UNT athletics. We have been football season ticket holders for several years now, and my recent retirement makes it easier to attend most basketball games. Was this last football season frustrating? Sure. Is this basketball season a major letdown? Sure. Do I keep my loyalty to my alma mater and hope for better days ahead? ABSOLUTELY!

  36. I cannot understand just how completely loyal this Andrew character is to Benford. He has to be a relative or family friend or works for him in the AD. I know that Dodge had his loyal supporters, too, even to the end. Guys, there is nothing we can do but bite down hard on the pillow. Literally, there is nothing we can do about this but watch it crash and burn for the this year, next year, and the year after. There is no way the university will buy out that much of a contract--if they couldn't afford to buy out Todd Dodge's last two years, they won't be able to do that for a sport that brings in far less $$ than football. If we are REALLY lucky, we won't have to endure a 4th year, although I suspect that the financial situation of the AD will probably make the a probability, too. Love RV's passion for the Mean Green, but you just cannot accept the hirings of Todd Dodge, Shanice Stephens, and Tony Benford. Just terrible...

  41. We had a ton of receivers quit on routes after we lost our only receiver with any speed in Chancellor and a top RB in Jimmerson. DT carried ten extra pounds in 2012 because there was absolutely no one behind him if he went down. He will have shed those ten lbs. in spring. The QB that beat Troy at home in 2011 for our only win ever at Troy and was on fire against top rate competition at KSU and will have his fourth year under Canales will blow away Berglund who hasn't played in two years and McNulty is not even in the hunt--too short and if you saw him @ Tulsa in 2011 you would know there is absolutely no chance that he will ever be a starter.

  42. If our luck holds, he will go on to be 1st team All-Big 12. Glad we could rob one year of eligibility from him.

  43. I am not quite advocating for Benford to be fired - but your argument that the players just need to hit their shots, coaches are putting them in position but their kids aren't listening, etc can be used against every underperforming team ever. I don't think you were ever onboard with firing Dodge either for that matter.

  44. Boys,it's Christmas, and no one has died because our mens basketball team was perhaps overated and maybe undercoached. I would not have used a comparison between Sandy Hook and our mens team, but I'm sure no harm was intended. The bottom line is that we expected sirlon for dinner and got chicken fried steak. While I would not have hired a coach without a successful head coaching background, Bedford is not the one who can't hit an outside shot nor has an attitude problem[Tony Mitchell]. We are just not a very good team. The UNT/Southeastern La. game was the worst college basketball. game this 70 year old geezer has ever seen bar non. I went to pre-NIT tourney at K.State, and in our loss to Alabama-Huntsville our opponent did what everyone else has done;pack in in on Tony because we have no one who can hit from the outside on a consistant basis. Mitchell had 10 points and 5 fouls in that game, which pretty much mirrors his season YTD.[ By the by,UAH had about 10 times the number of fans than we did]At any rate, the conference race begins in January, so lets hope for a fresh start in 2013 for our team and our nation. Best to you and yours over the holidays,Ward White.

  45. I blame our coaching staff for this. DT is the most difficult position to acquire good players. It is a particular weakness of this team. We had a Big 12-talent DT on our roster and we let him get away. It is our coaches jobs to motivate these guys and turn them into players. Why could the JC coaches motivate him and McCarney (who is supposed to be a DL guru (like Dodge was supposed to be a QB guru?)) could not? Having Brooks and a better DL could have easily made us bowl eligible this season. Massive failure by McCarney. Very disappointed in him about this. It is one thing if Brooks was an unsalvageable waste of a human. But to see the kid leave UNT and become a JC All-American and sign with Baylor while we use duct tape and super glue to try and put together a DL is all on McCarney.

  46. So...what some of us just might be saying is that the hiring of coaches is not an exact science. Some will be hits, some not so much. Some will have had success elsewhere but not at the new location and vice versa. Too bad this stuff, like pretty much everything when it comes to human beings, doesn't come with some sort of guarantee. And, as some may have wondered or surmised, I pretty much feel one should live with the contracts signed...unless, of course, there is some unlawful or terrible occurrence. So, you sign a 4 year...you get a min. Of four years, 5 years...same thing. And, for the record I think it should be the same for both parties. You signed it, it was good enough then, it should be good enough for its term! Just me....

  48. So, tell us all again how any of that is anywhere even remotely related to NT football except in your own mind? The way you connect the dots is only to make another one of your many negative comments. Kingsbury took his dream job at Tech. Have you even read his comments about this situation? If there ever was someone who always sees the glass as half empty it might just be you...or the infidel...seem to be pretty much one and the same....you think?

  49. SMU proved last night that it is light years ahead of North Texas. It's time to consider letting them buy out this series to stop what will be certain embarrassment if we follow through with facing such a program that clearly dwarfs North Texas. It is apparent that coaches, AD, and students don't mind being whipped completely by metroplex foes (see UTA in BB last two years). Only older alums who continue to endure the ridicule and embarrasement really care. Put them out of their misery. Run up the white flag and take in the mercy that cancelling this series will bring to the long sufferring of those who care and have endured for those that could care less and show no pride.
